I wasn't really shopping for glasses. In fact, I was just visiting St. Louis. I was walking down the street one morning and passed The Eye Bar and their window display caught my eye. I went in and they immediately began showing me glasses. And they really listened to what I wanted. I picked a pair, got a prescription made downstairs (Due to what is basically a long story, I am hard to measure a prescription for in my right eye. It is slightly paralyzed.) They got the best prescription I've ever had! In less than a week, my glasses arrived at my home in another state. I still love them! read more

UPDATE 8/10/24: The Black Optical team reached out directly to me on 8/5, and we reached a mutually agreeable solution on 8/8. The issue is now resolved. Original Review 8/3/24: DO NOT GO HERE. Dishonest and unethical pricing by Aaron & team at Black Optical. They mark up retail lens prices over $200+ (a roughly 40% price increase!) when you can get the EXACT same manufacturer, model, and customizations from ANY other authorized optician / lens seller in the St. Louis area. This is a huge problem for any customer, whether or not you have vision insurance. Aaron & team are now refusing to issue a refund after I presented them with competing price quotes from 5 other online and local opticians. I purchased the lenses at closing time. Once realizing the major price gouging - I asked only 6 hours into the next business day - if we could pause the lens making until the situation is figured out. I was told this was irreversible to do...although we were only 6 hours into a process that takes up to 10 days! Btw - the lab is "in house" so shouldn't be a significant effort to resolve. Upon call was told that 3:30pm was "too late in the business day" when I visited to do anything about it (they close at 7pm...) I am disappointed by the many excuses given by Black Optical instead of taking accountability for the situation. I've made a good faith effort across 4 days to remedy the situation (1 in person visit, 1 email, 2 phone calls) and have been constantly told that Aaron is "unavailable" or "out of office." They have proceeded with making my lenses without my consent and despite receiving repeated written and verbal requests to stop. Again, DO NOT GO HERE. There are plenty of other reputable opticians who are just as skilled, that will sell you lenses at an actually fair and honorable price WITHOUT trying to cheat you out of hundreds of dollars. I am now in the unfortunate situation of having to escalate with multiple national and state consumer protection agencies. Preemptive Rebuttals: 1. Black Optical team will respond with some information about the final sale / refund policy - which I was conveniently not informed about while making the purchase. One - I was only "informed" by a small line on the invoice AFTER I purchased. Two - this is an issue of price gouging, not me being "unhappy" with a product I received. 2. Black Optical team will say I made the purchase. Under misleading circumstances, as I was told the higher price was due to better technology, customization (which I later found out that other opticians also offer...) Regardless, this review is meant to warn potential customers so that you also do not also fall into my situation! The objective fact remains that any customer who shops here will be paying much more at Black Optical than other St. Louis opticians for the exact same items. At the very least, please shop around to make sure you're getting the fair price you deserve. read more

Update: I got a call right away trying to clear this up. It's complicated, and combined with a spouse that doesn't know what to ask or how to interpret answers, things are all kinds of confused. Ultimately the frame he chose had some kind of manufacturer restriction not allowing it to be submitted to insurance because of their reduced pricing. I'm not sure if this was conveyed to him prior to purchase or not. Nothing changed but at least I know how to be a more controlling wife and micromanage my husband in the future. I'm all about luxury and fine things but I watched some new Gucci boots fade away into my blue collar husband's glasses. ---- I've purchased multiple frames from EyeBar and was generally happy in the past. Great selection and lovely people. Making an appointment is easy, the dogs are super cute. Here I am now: I'm not sure if they're clueless or trying to rip me off. Just be sure to look at your bill and know your insurance coverage and ask questions while you're there. The last appointment my spouse had here left me with $800 in charges for ONE pair of glasses with insurance coverage (and that's after the free exam!) I tried asking them about it but they are very hard to get a hold of and continued to tell me that the frames were "too luxury" for insurance. No comment about the supposed-to-be-covered lenses and coating. That was never the case in the past and by the way, my insurance has no restrictions on frames. In speaking with my insurance, they did not even receive a claim for frames or lenses, only the eye exam! My charges should have been somewhere around a few hundred dollars, not $800. My frustration is with them answering my spouse's questions as if he doesn't know what he's talking about rather than actually listening, and looking at the co-pays that are listed plain as day. (It's not that hard - lenses: $X copay, etc.) Be careful is my advice. If we weren't paying attention it appears I'd be over charged by hundreds of dollars. read more

I love the convenience of The Eye Bar and the professionalism of the people who work. It had been awhile since I had an eye exam and I knew that I was going to need new contact lenses. Making an appointment was easy and when I go there, I was promptly taken downstairs where they do the exams. Yes, I did need new contacts. They called when they came in and I picked them up (not trying them on) and took them home. I noticed my right eye seemed a little hazy so I waited a couple of days before going back and letting them know there was a problem. I was taken directly in and a new exam on my right eye was given and a new pair of contacts were ordered (no charge). Within a few days they were in and I picked them up again and took them home. They were spot on and I was so excited about seeing again. Well, a few weeks later I decided that I needed new glasses also. I walked in and was waited on promptly. I just needed the cheapest frames since I only wear my glasses an hour in the morning and an hour at night. They had lots to choose from. I made my choice and they looked up my prescription and I am anxiously waiting for them to come in. Would I come back here? Yes, it's the best place in the Central West End for contacts and glasses. What an incredible place! The staff were so helpful and their expertise shined through our whole experience here. Allison welcomed us with great hospitality and immediately started setting us up as new clients in their system, sorting out our insurance and working with my partner's new prescription. (My partner hasn't had new lenses since 2018 and frames since 2013, and he just moved into the world of progressives -- oh, the joys for being over 40!) Aaron picked out great styles and colors for my partners face, including new and vintage frames for driving, reading/computer work, and sunglasses. Even though it's tough to find a good fit for my partner's head, Aaron came through and helped update his look. As my partner tried on each frame, Aaron even took pictures, so he could put his glasses back on to see what he actually looked like in them! So we updated my partners daily wear glasses- blue light protection, high index lenses. Got a new fun look of sunglasses that will go great with my partner's summer aloha shirts (and Miami Vice vibe). And then a pair of vintage silver frames (serial counted-who knew that was a thing?!) for driving with custom magnetic sun clips. (No progressives in those since he has an hour commute.) Aaron used a pupilometer to make sure the placement of the progressive areas of the lenses would be in just the right place. They also placed the frames and put dots so that they make sure to center his eyes in the lenses. Pandemic safety was in place. Everyone had mask on and hand sanitizer available. But Allison and Aaron were still friendly and provided great looks and conversation. We couldn't be happier with our experience and purchases here! read more

I've walked past Eyebar a few times whenever I'm meandering around CWE. On a random Saturday, my boyfriend and I walked in to check out their frames. The Eyebar staff were extremely friendly. They let me try out a few pairs and email me photos of my favorite frames. I am pretty picky and have a hard time following recommendations but the Eyebar staff definitely know how to pick the right frames for you. During my first unofficial visit, they did not push an appointment even though they emailed me photos of my favorite frames. I appreciate the staffs' professionalism and their knowledge of picking unique frames that fit your face frame. I believe these small experiences what drew me to come back to see them one month later. A few thoughts: 1. Making an appointment on the phone is easy. They are pretty accommodating and are willing to take me in as soon as possible. Their opticians move back and forth from the CWE and Clayton location, so a walk-in isn't recommended. 2. You have to greet their cutest shop dog. 3. I can't stop raving about the knowledgable staff. They are experts at finding the right style and shape that fits your personality and face. They picked out some funky pairs that I would've never considered picking, and I ended up having a couple of favorites. I opted in for a funky pair of aviator-style in gold at the end and get many compliments from strangers. 4. I will prewarn you that the frames are at a higher price point. They hold some luxurious eye brands that I did not know much about. My frames came with a hefty price with some needed blue light lens. 5. Make an appointment with Dr. Sonias. She took the time to get to know me before starting out the exam. She even spotted something with my eyes that other past opticians overlooked, which I was shocked to hear. $120+ for plano lenses with a tint. Some other STL area options will charge more. I've had lenses done all over the country, most stores are not offering lab services any longer. The stores that gauge the public on price are pathetic. Anyone can get this done at an eyemart express for approximately $30 in about 10-15 mins. They say an hour but it's usually way quicker than an hour. $30 vs $120. $30 vs 350. at other stores. Even if you have money, think about the store's thoughts on ripping you off. Sorry to give this place a bad review but customer service sucks here. 1. Waited over two weeks for my Tom Ford prescription eye glass order. I'm -2.00, very basic Rx not sure why the extended wait. I called twice to check the status of my order after a week passed..Jared acted as if I was bothering him. 2. During the same visit asked one of the sales staff if they could buff the scratches out of my Tom Ford aviator sunglasses. I was told that's not possible but they could create new lenses instead. I agreed. Waited three weeks to receive my sunglasses back and the fools couldn't fit the new lenses in the sunglasses so some idiot glued the lenses on and if that's not bad enough glued them on unevenly. Jared suggested I select a new pair of sunglasses from their stock ..not Tom Ford so I declined. Finally Jared ordered a new pair from some vendor, not Neiman Marcus as I suggested. The new "Tom Ford" sunglasses have very dark brown lenses and not as transparent and ombré as the original. I wonder if they are fake?? A delightful and fantastic place. We had a last minute emergency - glasses snapped in half, a few hours in the state, needed to be able to see. The eye bar came through better than we hoped: a fantastic selection of frames, outstanding service, and on-site production. So I don't live in St. Louis, I'm actually in Hawaii. But my favorite pair of glasses from L.A Eyeworks (which I got in SF), break after a few years and I NEED THE SAME FRAMES. So I go online and this is the last place that has the same style and color. I worry a little about ordering online from a company I don't know but they have Paypal so there's some protection there. I get a weird paypal name Elite Web Stl. and email to ask if that's them. I get an email from Jared that that's them and my frames are actually sold out and they'll try to find me a pair. I called about a week later and was told they are going to be about a month and there are 5 other people waiting too. The lady was very nice, explained that if I got a refund and decided to wait for the stock, I might get put on the bottom of the waitlist since I wouldn't have an order. So I told her to keep it but I was worried since my paypal protection would run out. She assured me that it's just her and her husband, and they're a real store with a real shop and I had nothing to worry about. She invited me to call if I ever got nervous and I appreciated how friendly she was! I sell things online for a living and I know how careful you gotta be these days. I got my glasses sooner than expected, UPS delivery which I APPRECIATE cause to Hawaii anything less just sucks. It came perfectly packaged in the LA Eyeworks case with a little cloth and had a bonus kit with their own branded cloth and spray! Perfect! I've been wearing glasses for 40 years. My vision is hard to correct and I'm picky. So, when I say the Eye Bar is fantastic, I have the experience to mean that.   I just bought my second pair of glasses at the Eye Bar and I'm sure I'll be back.  It may be the best eye glasses shop in St Louis --certainly if you're interested in higher end frames. There are few things in my life that I use more than my eye glasses, so I try not to compromise on expertise or quality. Unlike most stores where you wander through frames by yourself, the Eye Bar fitters know practically every frame in the store and work to find the glasses that make you look great. They genuinely enjoy the challenge of finding the perfect pair. I'm difficult to fit and most glasses simply don't fit me right. I've been known to try on hundreds of pairs in a dozen shops trying to find something that works.  Of course, not everyone is so picky, but this time at the Eye Bar I probably tried on 20 frames.  That's crazy fast for me.   Aaron, who helped me find my new pair, has been fitting glasses for something like 15 years! I suggest when weighing online reviews that the op's presence on the site otherwise be taken into consideration. I'll preface this by saying I've worn glasses since junior high. I like designer eyewear. I also like multiple pairs every few years. I've never had a problem with a script placed in a pair of frames, until now. This place only stands behind their work up to a certain point. Beware when dropping this kind of cash. I suggest buying one pair at a time and having an outside optician check the finished product. Also, avoid the "bespoke" frame rip-off. They are uncomfortable and crappy looking. I have yet to wear what I paid over $600 for (and that was just one pair). Two words of advice for you fine yelpers: Warby Parker. As you can see by the owner's reply, he unwittingly makes my point; and, btw, I'm extremely happy with the product and service I received from Warby Parker, Salt City Optics, and Barton Perreira in cleaning up the disaster I had at the Eye Bar. All three places stand by their work, unconditionally. In addition, ad hominem attacks are trashy: simply trying to help. The owner has since amended his original nasty comment to state "multiple" solutions were offered. Nothing has been offered to rectify the unusable product I received. If I have kept just one consumer from making the very expensive mistake I did, then this review has done its job and the owner's greed will not have been worth it. I was serviced today at the EyeBar. My son is in town and he needed an eye exam and contacts. I of course needed contacts too. We called and made an appointment. We were even able to get an appointment together that same day. I didn't know what that meant but it meant great services what I found out the place was clean the professionals were very professional. They were busy but they have enough staff to accommodate the people that were coming in and out. We got personalized service. We weren't rushed and I've been to more than one or two doctors before it so I know that the service was excellent so 5 stars is what I'm giving them. I would give them if I could. This is a very nice place to go to a very safe surrounding. I felt safe going in safe coming out even though it's like 530pm getting a little dust as we're leaving. Great service. I would recommend it highly to anyone who needs glass service whether you need a new place, you need to switch from your own try this place. -Spoken by my mother. Verbal review. I dropped in to the Eye Bar to continue my fruitless search for trendy, fashionable glasses after finally breaking my back-up pair. I almost wish I'd broken them sooner! The Eye Bar is indeed a bar. They've got a long counter and bar stools, behind which they have shelves and shelves full of pretty frames for guys and gals. Just tell the bartender -- I mean employee? -- what you're in the mood for and they know exactly what to pull for you to try on. I told them the general idea of what I wanted -- big, simple frames -- and they pulled a few different options to help me narrow it down. I tried on maybe ten pairs total. Once we'd narrowed it to two or three options, they whipped out a fancy camera and were able to take quality photos that showed up instantly on an iPad. This was a really helpful tool because it gave a different perspective on each of the frames than what I'd get just looking in a mirror. They were even able to email me the photos of me in the ones I ended up buying so I could share it with my mom! The place itself looks like an upscale clothing boutique, or even a trendy bar -- lovely wood floors, minimalist decorations. But there's no shortage of great designers and frame sizes, styles, and colors to choose from. read more

When I lost my favorite pair of black-rimmed glasses, I knew I needed to find a new pair, and fast. I was wearing my (really ugly) pair of backup glasses in the meanwhile, and for someone who's trying to get her groove back, it just wasn't working out. So to The Eye Bar I went. While I'm really good at going to the dentist every 6 months, the doctor once a year, and getting my oil changed every 3 months, I suck at making regular eye appointments. The last time I had an eye exam was at least 5 years ago. Oops! Thankfully, The Eye Bar has an optometrist on site. I made an eye appointment online and was set. The day of my appointment, I walked in and was warmly greeted by the employees. I was led downstairs to the exam room. The doctor was super nice and professional, and the eye exam went smoothly. Now time for the fun part! The Eye Bar has a TON of awesome and unique frames. I sat in a chair, and the employees brought me pair after pair of glasses to try on. It was so much fun! I felt like I had my own personal shoppers. Eventually, I narrowed it down to three frames. It was a tough decision, but they took a few pictures of me wearing each pair, which helped immensely. Looking in the mirror is one thing; seeing yourself in a picture is different somehow. I ended up with a super sweet pair of specs that I'm absolutely IN LOVE with. And it's a good thing I'm so enamored with them -- the price for the frames + lenses was DEFINITELY not cheap! Ouch. I received my brand new glasses about 5 days later (they send the frames off to get the lenses installed -- they don't do it on-site). They gave me a glasses case, glasses cleaner (that I'll receive free refills on for life), and told me about the two year scratch warranty that comes with every pair of specs purchased from The Eye Bar. Sweet. The best part of the visit? After I picked out my glasses, we celebrated with an ice cold corona. YES, The Eye Bar has a mini-fridge with various alcoholic bevvies. While I have never gotten glasses at The Eye Bar (I have family in the optical industry), I have stopped in to look a few times. They are always nice and never pushy. This weekend we stopped in after my boyfriend's sunglasses lost a screw. They were not purchased at The Eye Bar, but they very happily replaced the screw. I have very bad vision and have worn glasses/contacts for about 30 years. Just got a new pair from The Eye Bar and absolutely love them! The exam: Loved the doctor, she was very friendly and professional. I was a little nervous because the doctor said I had slight astigmatism in my right eye which she changed my prescription to correct. The glasses: The owner Stacey helped me. After I told her what I was looking for she had a few ready for me to try. She handed me her top pick first. I really liked them but went on to try probably a dozen pairs (bear in mind she sanitized all of these due to the pandemic, really impressed by the customer care!) only to conclude she was right with the first pair. I love them, they're very flattering and stylish but made of titanium (she knows I broke my other pair 4 times). If you like premium eyewear, check them out!
