This place is so insignificant within the spectrum of bars & mixologists that exist throughout the country. The bartender/owner (not too sure of his role) had a mental breakdown when I told him that my cocktail was mostly ice. He went off by telling me that he created all of the cocktails, and trained the bartenders to make them to the T of his standards. Which consisted of 85% ice. He even had the nerve to say that all of the little spaces between the ice is where the contents of the drink sit. OK, nice observation dude. Anyway I didn't appreciate his approach in this situation, instead of responding like an adult, he threw a temper tantrum like a kid leaving chuck e cheese. Get it together, you work at a bar... where customer service is a main selling point. Like everything else in life, you will hear things that you don't necessarily want to hear. But yea, save your money unless you want to babysit the bartender/owner. read more

Just had a perfect evening at the Black Pearl- I've been waiting for the opportunity to check this place out and it was worth the wait. Tried each of the oyster on the fresh menu before settling on a dozen. 2 cocktails and 12 oysters later I was pleased to have a great chat with the chef while he prepared some super fresh tapas style treats. It's past time the oyster lover in Tyler has to drive to Dallas get their fix. Rick(he of the square) has opened a small oyster bar next to his joint on the Tyler downtown square. Before you plan your visit let's get a few things straight. This place is small. No tables at all. The bar proper will handle roughly 25 people. The overflow seating is bountiful, but you will face a brick wall rather than the action at the bar. This is a date night or happy hour venue. If you come in a group of even 4 you won't be able to face each other as you all sit in a line. (providing you can even score 4 empty seats in a row) Take your couples night elsewhere if you want to bore your friends/neighbors with stories about your kids. So this place is all shotgun bar. No kitchen to speak of. Everything is prepared in front of you on the bar top. With no kitchen comes no hot food. Everything is on ice. I opted for the local cheese plate to start things off. It was loaded to the gills with fresh Texas cheese selections and breads. Damn good, and an excellent price point to boot. I'm a sucker for ceviche. Fish "cooked" in citris juice? Hell yes, I'll bite every time. I had a choice of traditional crab/shrimp or mango halibut. The traditional was good, but I'll try the mango next time. The lobster bisque was too rich and heavy on the cream for me. I'll pass. Now the oysters......this is what you come for. Prime Time fresh from the New England/Maine waters. Come early, as they tend to sell out the later into the evening. The oysters are sold individual, so it's a good idea to get a small selection of the day's offering to see what you like. Each individual oyster will run you about $2.75 per. The "fresh" shipment days are Tue, Thursday, and Sat. The bar is geared toward a prohibition style menu. Old fashioned, Gimlets, and all the oldies your grandparents swilled are represented. The wine selection is decent, and your basic bottled beers, but no craft beers or drafts. read more

The Black Pearl is essentially my new favorite restaurant. Every aspect was astounding. These are the highlights from my first experience: 1) Service - thank you Justin! 2) Food - oyster selection, Alaskan halibut ceviche, creole shrimp, cheese platter, & lobster roll (every single item was phenomenal & I actually wanted to order the entire menu, but limited myself to these. Ha!) 3) Cocktails - dark & stormy & pimm's cup 4) Music - Al Green & classic soul (perfect for date night) 5) Atmosphere - cozy & quaint without having to yell over each other like most Tyler establishments We are frequent travelers & the Black Pearl is reminiscent of my all time favorite cuisine destination, New Orleans. Our first visit here was early on a Thursday. As we appeared to be the first guests of the evening, we got immediate service. We started with a selection of the east coast oysters. We then shared a bowl of lobster bisque, a lobster roll, and an Alaskan king crab leg on the half shell. This was our first place to visit in Tyler that made us feel like we were back home in Dallas. We walked in and the bartender Justin greeted us along with several other hellos from behind the bar. Straight away we knew we had found our spot! Justin told us about their craft and made us some delicious cocktails. The new chef for Ricks and Pearl was dicing up fruit for brunch the next morning and made sure I had a bowl in front of me after I inquired. Justin sold me on a slice of key lime pie, as we had just had a less than amazing dinner at Jack Ryan's. The pie was perfect, tasted like I was eating a key lime. Every single dish brought out around us looked so good and I wish we had just had dinner here instead. Justin would come out from behind the bar and walk all the way to the end to drop off drinks or deliver checks, very personable touch. Made sure we had the game we wanted to watch on the screen in front of us, every guy behind the bar just truly seemed to care that we were happy and enjoying ourselves. Chef told us about Sunday brunch at Ricks which we will be back for. Great music, chill vibe, great staff. Can't wait to return. read more
