I have nothing but good things to say about Black Rabbit Meads. I visited around 3:00 PM on a Friday and there were still a few parking spots right outside. Since I was there earlier, Black Rabbit Meads was not busy. We received exceptional service and since it was our first time, the bartender walked us through the menu. He was very accommodating and even asked us what flavors were off limits either due to allergies or personal preference. We started off with a flight and really enjoyed trying 4 different meads. We also got a cocktail, which was delicious! Black Rabbit Meads is a cool place to hang out. There is also a trivia night, which I look forward to attending. The Black Rabbit was recommended to me by a friend, so I decided to try the place while I was downtown. The bar manager, Colin, was very pleasant, professional and proficient greeting me and offering some samples before ordering. I tried his favorites, the Hucklebearer , with huckleberry and a touch of vanilla, yummy, and the Summer of 1864, a whisky punch-ish mead. Very delicious!! The place was started by two high school teachers who wanted to bring the first meadery to Nevada. The place is decorated like and old English pub. It is clean, spacious and friendly. I actually received a tour of the on site brewery and explanation of the complexity of the different meads. Mead is the first form of alcohol as it is made from fermented honey. The place will have a big party on Saturday to celebrate their fifth year anniversary. Congratulations! There is free parking on site. I was so impressed by this meadery when my 30 running friends and I showed up on a Sunday afternoon. That's right: thirty-one human beings descended unexpectedly, and the single bartender handled us like a champ. We were on a twelve-brewery run, and this was stop number six. I had been skeptical of the location, especially while driving, so it took me rolling in on foot to overcome my hesitancy of parking across the street from the homeless shelter. They have a dedicated parking lot and an outdoor drinking area, but the beauty of a space is inside. It's huge and cozy. The dark walls look like they hold the good kind of secrets. The front bar area where one orders drinks reminds me of what Americans think the front bar of English/British pubs should look like. Or maybe it's just the fact that they also sell hand pies that was giving me UK vibes. ' I had also been skeptical of mead, probably because I don't think I'm too keen on honey. The mead cocktail that I had was delicious, and on a day on which I'm not also visiting eleven other breweries, I look forward to trying more. So surprised. We were at a wine club pick up next door and the night was still young. So we decided to check out Black Rabbit. Just last month we had visited a mead winery in the Russian River area. No one was really fond of it. BR took us by surprise. It's not wine, it's mead beer and cocktails. Two order a flight of four, between them they were able to try almost all the pours. I went with a cocktail as I'm not usually a beer person. The Mt Coropuna is a blueberry mead based refreshing cocktail with some effervescent. Perfect for Reno's hot summer days. BR also has a snack menu of hand pies. Larger than empanadas, but still a savory pastry filled with various meats and cheese. And a veggie one. Served piping hot. The bar is two rooms laid out very comfortably with a large bar to the back left. Opposite the bar is a small stage. Around 7pm a single artist entertained us while sipped our way thru the menu. Decent sized parking lot to the east of the building. A small parking patio is also available. Nice evening with friends, we will be returning. read more

This was the first time we came here and honestly, one of the best bars we've been to in Reno! We went on a Tuesday which is Trivia Night here and it can easily be seen as a fan favorite. As soon as we stepped in, there was a warm welcome from our soon to be bartender Collin. He was awesome! Definitely knew how to make new comers feel welcomed. We ended up ordering two flights which eventually led to them just having us try each Mead that was available (even their warm spiced mead!). The blueberries one were definitely the best and will now be our go to when we come here again. A drink that we later ordered was the 'In the land of milk & honey' which was delicious! It was an amazing Yelp Elite Event tonight at Black Rabbit Mead Company 9.28.2022. I usually don't go when they serve wine or beer because I can't bring my 2 littles. Good thing today we have a foundation event wherein they took in my babies and the mama here joined in the fun at the Yelp event. The owners, Will and Jake are amazing! They have a story to tell. How they started. From teaching to making mead. Mead, or "honey wine," is an alcoholic beverage made by fermenting honey. Their raw honey is so good too that we get to try out during our time with Jake inside the meadery. We get to try 2-3 of their mead. We had Cocktail-Style Mead Draft Mead which was my favorite, Mt Coropuna. And Cider-Style Mead which was the B.L. Bliss and Hawaiian Ember. Both were good but I like the sweet side better. We had an added bonus during the Yelp Elite Squad event which is the Nola Sliders. Jeremiah, the owner is really nice to serve out the sliders himself. Told his story on how he started and how he came to Reno and have his truck shipped to town too. This is an amazing experience knowing the owners of our locally owned businesses! I wouldn't consider myself a big mead fan, but I was still quite interested to check this place out. Some friends were in town and I wanted to show them something unique to Reno. First, I love the look and feel of the place. It has a bit of an old English pub feel, with the large communal wooden tables, brick walls, and a classic looking black painted entrance. I also love their logo! It's also a bit modern with its large open room concept and piping in some cool tracks from a large speaker near the back wall. The gal at the bar was really friendly and walked us through the selection of drinks. We opted to split a flight of four meads. We selected the Church of Roger (their standard Mead), Hawaiian Ember (a jalapeño flavored), Rosemary Black (berry and rosemary), and the PB and J (a beer and mead combo.) Between the five of us at the table, taste reviews were mixed. Some liked a few, some didn't. Personal preference for the most part. I think the quality is there. I personally thought they were all pretty good. However, I tended to enjoy the flavored mead over the plain mead. I really enjoyed the Hawaiian Ember. Crisp and clean with a nice hint of heat. The PB and J is a collaboration between their neighbours Lead Dog (PB stout) and their own Rasbperry mead. It sounds weird but it was pretty good! I have been to Black Rabbit a few times and always have a good experience! I'm not a huge beer person, so I always enjoy having an alternative like cider or mead. We came on a Sunday afternoon and were the only ones there. It is in the brewery district and near many other great businesses. We enjoyed being able to walk here right after brunch down the street. The interior has a cool vibe of dark colors, black leather cushions in the booths, wood paneled walls, lots of plants, and some old school ski and climbing memorabilia. They have a lot of events including trivia and live music on certain days of the week. They have meads available that are made in house or you can order a drink from other local bars/breweries that they serve (Lead Dog, Pigeon Head). The meads here are made with local Sierra honey! You can also get a flight for $13 which comes with 4 drinks that are 5oz each. I tried the Rosemary Black mead for the first time and liked it! All the meads I've had have been alright, but I have not found one that I'm a huge fan of yet. My husband got the Lead Dog beer that they were serving. They have a patio outside for the warmer months which I believe is dog friendly. I have a few friends that love this place so much that they have become members! I'm not sure what all perks come with being a member, but I know you at least get 20% off on your drinks which is awesome. They have some cards and board games to choose from, we played Uno while enjoying our drinks! While this is not my favorite place to get a drink in town, I do like it and plan to come check out one of their events sometime! read more

We were in town visiting our son. He suggested that we visit BRM. Sure glad he suggested it, as we loved everything we tried. BRM is warm and inviting. What do you get when you mix 2 teachers and a bee keeper? The start of a wonderful local meadery. Not gonna lie, I never took mead too seriously before my most recent Reno trip. Honey wine? What? But it's so not that. Read on, friends. This spot makes a dry mead that's like a cider but not cloyingly sweet, just a hint! It's delicious. I actually loved their original house brew the best, Roger's Church is its name. It's delicate, light, dry and very approachable. We did a sampler of their 4 taps with the other three being a jalapeño/pineapple, hops and raspberry. The hoppy one was very unique and floral, the raspberry with a hint of that sweet fruit and the jalapeño pineapple being my least fave of the three, with a little too much jalapeño for my taste, yet not spicy, so go figure. The sample flight was perfect taste and a great way to change up the flavor profile. I like beer and I like mead. Have that friend who "hates" beer? Maybe this can be your common ground! They were light and bubbly, with different interesting flavors. The meads were good for sipping, and the atmosphere was conducive to having conversation. I honestly thought that that was plenty. You can also buy full glasses. My favorite was the jalapeño. It was not spicy, but it did have a subtle jalapeño flavor. Before you go! Be aware that mead is not beer. Mead is sweeter than beer, It is actually closer to wine than beer. If you are aware of this, then you will have a lovely time. I went to black rabbit on opening night. They had live music in the venue and a food truck in the parking lot outside. Nominvore was serving delicious food! I found out that the owners of Nomnivore and Black rabbit are friends, so perhaps they will frequent the area. The inside is spacious. There are several tables and a few couches. I really like this place! First of all, I must mention that they're operating under the current guidelines at 25% capacity and following all the mandated protocols to keep us all safe, including social distancing and mask requirements. Located in the burgeoning 4th St Brewery District, it's a cozy room with a fabulous atmosphere that's super inviting and very comfortable to hang out at. They present live music from some of the finest musicians in the area, including Tyler Stafford, David Hayes and Lexi Scatena. I'm looking forward to when restrictions are eased and they can welcome more guests so that I can bring my group, First Take featuring Rick Metz (www.RickMetz.com), there to play some Vocal Jazz from The Great American Songbook. Now...on to the Mead. I've loved Mead for a long time and the way they present theirs is outstanding! From their website: "Mead is an alcohol made from honey. It's the world's oldest alcohol and is often seen as the drink of Vikings. Yet, it was celebrated by many cultures around the world and is growing with tremendous popularity once again. Mead can be made like wine, beer, or cider. Though it's alcohol primarily comes from honey, it can also include fruits, grains, herbs, or spices in its recipe." Here, they make Mead based Ciders! I toured with bands through Canada in the 80s where I developed a taste for Canadian cider. None of the ciders that have made their way to the U.S. during the cider craze have held up to what I drank in Canada during that time and Canada does NOT export their ciders to the States. Up until I visited this venue, I never thought that I'd find any cider that was as good. Black Rabbit Meads has finally hit that mark for me! Their Mead based Ciders are crisp, with just the right amount of carbonation to make drinking them very pleasurable. The "flavored" ciders are delicious, but I'm a bit of a purist...I like their standard non-flavored cider the best. That would be: Church of Roger (CDR; GF) Mead in it's purest form: just honey, water, and yeast. It's one of 10 ciders they offer on tap and they're also available in bottles. My husband has been a big mead fan for years, and he's slowly converting me to one. I like the cider/champagne style, rather than sticky-sweet, heavy-honey mead. Black Rabbit Mead is definitely that. Three of us walked in on one afternoon. The bar keep was wonderful, inviting and helpful. We perched on bar and tried the flight. All of them were distinctively different, and tasty. One of the surprising favorites was Hawaiian Ember (pineapple/jalapeno). Didn't taste strong pineapple flavor, but the aftertaste had a very pleasant jalapeno. Rosemary Black was also excellent. 10/10 love this place. We're out of the Sacramento area, and do day or weekend trips to Reno/Tahoe, and we make a point to stop here when in the area. The selection is great, and I appreciate they have a rotating "favorite" if you can't decide. The staff has always been friendly, the bathrooms clean, and the hand pies hot. Sometimes too hot, but that's not their fault; I was just impatient and that's what happens. The first time we went, it was a super quiet night, and we just got comfortable and enjoyed our drinks. Every other time we've been, it's been a show. Last time was live solo music (admittedly too loud for my taste). The time before, two couples were just wasted at the bar, and their interactions were golden. I think one of the wives was trying to pick up the other, and it got really weird among them, which was hilarious. We typically travel with our dog, and they allow our pup to hang out. Lead Dog Brewing next door wasn't originally dog-friendly, and "dog" is in the name. It looks like we might actually get a Spring this year, and they're walking distance to Greater Nevada Field, so drinks and baseball are gonna be a thing for us. read more

It was pretty quiet (weeknight) when we arrived, and the bartender let us know to sit wherever we wanted - plenty of opportunity to space out from others. We all chose variations of cider-style mead, which were all quite good (really loved the Hawaiian ember and the Bavarian bicycle. Also picked up a couple of bottles to enjoy later!
