So disappointing, this is nothing like the old days Black Raven. The bar staff was completely rude, a tall gal with brown hair and shorter guy with blackish hair. They have major attitudes, and show it on their face! Not friendly at all!! Their beers weren't all that great at all. This is more a family orientated bar than anything with a kid gaming area and pinball machines. Young kids were still in there at 9pm, running around and yelling. We will not return and staff needs an attitude adjustment. read more

Honestly I was not very stoked about this place. Every single beer I tried tasted pretty awful honestly. Tasted very homemade and unprofessional. I tried all of the IPAs, the hazies and the pale ales and I think one pilsner. Quite honestly they were all pretty bad and kind of disappointed that I spent all that money doing so. The staff weren't friendly but the staff weren't rude or anything like that either. Also didn't love how they were playing UFC when I was here with my family. I've never felt anything but comfortable the times I've been here. There's always magically been a parking spot waiting for me. They always have something on tap that I'll keep drinking more of. (I'm not a IPA guy, but man do I love a Coco Jones!) Every person I've interacted with at Black Raven have just been super nice and helpful. I was just in recently after wrangling a bunch of my buddies for a night out and was super thrilled that the Feather Weather Mexican Hot Chocolate Stout was on tap. Super good. I've been back to Black Raven multiple times since taking some time off after some previous bad experiences, specifically around their mug club. It was hard to stay away since they have some of the best beers on the Eastside. Not only do they have some great IPA's (like Trickster and Wisdom Seeker), but they also have great "Rare Birds" that are not brewed year-round. These vary by the month/season and some tend to be very strong, so I tend to stick with their regular offerings most of the time. As others have mentioned, the food they serve is limited mainly to pretzels; the hard one's are free if you ask, and the soft pretzels are ~$5 and much tastier. They also have food trucks on several nights, but I prefer to pick up a pizza from Flying Saucer pizza which is just across the street. Parking can be challenging since it's a bit limited, but you can park on the street as well which I don't think many people realize. read more

Great space, delicious beer, and friendly service! Do I really need anything else from a joint that specializes in beer? Not really!! I had never been there before and enjoy variety, so I decided to go with the $6 "Flight of the Raven" and get a chance to try six of their beers. I probably enjoyed the hefeweizen the most, but I finished all of the samples and enjoyed each one at least a little. The back room is a great spot for a beer-filled party that you don't have to clean up yourself! The near-by Flying Saucer Pizza has partnered with Black Raven (meaning: BR has their menu on the tables, FSP delivers there for free) so there is food available there. I didn't try any of their pizza, but the friends that ordered some seemed to enjoy it... and EVERYONE enjoyed some of the rather special pizza names on that menu. Bonus points for the waitress because she was great about asking people for their cards so she could start separate tabs right away! Made it super easy to pay for everything at the end. read more

I would say this place is more like a 3.5 rather than a 4. I enjoy my beer and was looking forward to trying this brewery. I got the Trickster IPA which I thought was delicious and easy to drink. My partner got a beer tasting and other than the Trickster, he was not impressed with the other beers that were on tap that day. It might be the seasonal selection, I'm not sure. They had a blueberry beer that people may enjoy if you like fruity beer. We tried the scotch ale which was okay but nothing spectacular. We just really love the Trickster IPA- it's a solid IPA and I highly recommend it. In terms of brewery size, this is a smaller brewery with some limited seating outdoors for a nice day. They had a pizza food truck parked in the lot which we eagerly took advantage of. Would I come back? I would maybe wait for the next seasonal selection to come out and maybe check out the location in Woodinville. read more

Mind you, my husband and I are black and we don't go to places expecting anything to be weird, as a matter of fact we always approach new places with the full expectation that the place will be friendly (like most places in Seattle are). Finally got a chance to head over to Black Raven in Redmond today. It was lunch so we dropped by Willows Deli and picked up a sandwich, a few pizzas from Flying Saucer and headed over for a few brews. Both are very close so picking up food before coming over isn't a big deal if you think ahead. Nice decor with lots of dark wood and a few comfortable chairs. I liked the coziness of the interior. I've read that it can be come crowded, but we were in for lunch and it was all to ourselves. I had the flight of beers to get a good cross section and let me say I liked everyone of them. Normally, you find a few less than tasty ones at some other breweries; but I loved every one of them. The beer here is top notch and some of the best. Ended up buying a few bottles of BirdBrain, BeakTweaker and Pour Les Oiseaux to partake at home. You'll really like coming here! read more

Awesome beer in a mellow tap room make this a great place to meet after work, or even to do a little work while enjoying a beer by yourself. Black Raven doesn't offer food, but you can have Flying Saucer Pizza delivered (just let'em know your general location) or they've started hosting food trucks outside for people to grab a bite to eat and bring it back in. As for the beers - Coco Jones, or La Petite Morte (if it's on top) are always my goto's. I'm not an IPA guy so I can't pass judgement on those :) read more

Great beer. My favorites are their IPAs, both the regulars and the limited releases. They do have some good items here, but I've never tried them. There is a small patio area in front. The interior space is much bigger than it appears from the outside--there are several rooms connected to each other and two bars. It's in an industrial park, so depending on the time of day/day of the week you go, the parking lot may be more or less busy (4-5pm when most businesses are still open but some people are starting to get off work and go for a drink can be a particularly challenging time), but I've never had too much trouble finding a spot. Man, these guys are just killin' it, and the evidence is everywhere you look. It's just about the beer here, they don't have a kitchen and they don't pour much other than their own brews. But if you're a beer lover there's definitely nothing else you need. They're still in the same place where they started a few years ago, but they have completely transformed it. They added extra space to the tasting room, then some more, then opened a wall, then branched rooms off of that new room, and there's outside seating, and so on, and so on. It's just an anonymous little office park building, and they're a dime a dozen in the 425--but there guys have made it into a thriving, bustling spot where people can come hang out and enjoy really good beer. Now, you CAN order in pizza and otherwise get fed here. They've got you covered that way. So it's not like a beer endurance challenge or anything. It's just that they don't make the food themselves. The staff are really funny and friendly and easy to talk to about beer, whether you're a geek with a million little questions of a newb with a million basic questions or somewhere in between. They're super busy most of the time, to be fair, but you can be sure you're getting the beer you want and you'll understand what you're drinking. The expansion actually has big ramifications for them as a business. They're something of a cult brewery, if you didn't know, and there are a lot more people wanting to try their beers than there are beers available. They can't get kegs to everyone who asks for them, so, the farther you get from Redmond, the harder it is to find their stuff pouring. Their bottling is extremely limited, but their reputation extends nationally and even internationally, and for everybody who cracks a bottle of BR, there are 25 people scattered everywhere wishing they could have had some. A very nice problem to have, right? But still a problem that takes a massive commitment to remedy. And they've made the commitment. They're massively expanding their brewhouse, and the storage, labs, bottling, and everything else that goes with that. By the end of 2014 they'll be producing way more, and doing it way more efficiently with much more advanced equipment. This is *such* great news, for them and for us. As it stands now, their lineup runs to big ales, with high grav, big bodies, strong flavors, and powerful aromatics. They try everything, though, from traditional styles that you might not have even heard of to sours and fruit beers and stuff that they just totally made up that has no recognized style classification. They're true creative spirits in this way. Most importantly, they succeed in the beers they make. You'll never come in here and drink something just because it's weird and one of a kind--if they do have a weirdly singular beer pouring when you come in, it'll also be good, maybe even amazing. Another thing to know is that they barrel-age a ton of different things. This means bigger beers with even more powerful flavors, and it also means waiting months or even years to get to try them. For the average drinker, this might or might not make you impatient. It does mean they have special releases of beers that only come out one day a year, and you have to keep your ears peeled if you want to try them. Their barrel room has windows on two sides, so you can always see the beers becoming one with the wood, taunting you with their deliciousness and making you wait. Best of all, they like to have fun. Last night, while they were cleaning up after brewday, there was a disco ball spinning above the fermenters, and Kool and the Gang were playing on the hi-fi. I've got nothing but love and compliments for these guys, and I wish I could get my hands on at least one glass of everything they make. read more

Several months in, and this has shaped up to be my new local favorite! Beaux and Andy are setting the new standard for quality Northwest Ales in my opinion. I couldn't ask to have a better brewery close to home! The tasting room is gorgeous, and far beyond what you would expect in such an industrial complex. The decorations, and subtle touches really make a comfortable atmosphere. The beers: Kristale/Hefe- Excellent examples of the style. Finding good American made hefeweizens are tough, and Black Raven has really pulled through! Not a style of beer I go to often, but I can certainly appreciate when it is done well. Totem Pale- Hands down, no close second, BEST pale ale I've ever had! I can't explain enough how much this beer speaks of the brewing talent, and process mastery Beaux and Andy have achieved. A must try for anyone who gets the chance! Tamberlane Brown- Like the Pale, this beer is at the top of its class. Subtle roasty flavor from the chocolate malts balanced perfectly with the subtle hop aroma, make this one of the tastiest beers I've ever had. So refreshing to find a GOOD (this one is beyond good however) brown ale. That's hard to do. Morrighan Stout- Has bested Snoqualmie as my favorite nitro stout. I know I'm starting to get repetitive here, but you'll be hard pressed to find a better one in the Northwest. Trickster IPA- Damn son! I love me some IPA's, but I'm finding it hard to find many in the area that really blow me away. Most use far too much of a certain few excessively astringent hop varieties that I'm not a huge fan of... Not the case with this one. It boasts a huuuuge hop aroma and flavor, without being overly bitter and astringent. It most definitely deserved the recent award it received! Really what I'm getting at is that there isn't a downside to this place. It's exactly what our already amazing local beer scene needed. read more

Upon entering I was actually surprised how much room there was, it just kept on going! 2 bar areas, lounge furniture + plenty of tables and outdoor patio as well! Here's the deal. The main brewers do a great job - and its a great idea to have an eastside neighborhood pub. Props to the ex- Mac 'n Jack brewer on his venture. The problems: Front staff sets a new low for customer service. The number of "you gonna order or what?" comments are astonishing. Last week, I watched 3 guys admitting to being first timers asking why noone was waiting on them, and the bartender said "Well you can be a$$holes wanting us to wait on you, or you can get off your a$$ and come get a beer." It seems like her approach picked up where I left the last guy a year ago at my last visit. And the Trickster? The only tricky thing about it appears to be the recipe...never the same twice. Black Raven is a top shelf micro-brewery, that for my money, is top three in Washington State. Don't believe me? Check the awards: With 14 beers awarded in 8 different categories, you're going to have a tough time finding more diverse quality in a microbrewery. Beer Quality & Diversity: On tap most offerings rate above average to excellent. Because they do so many variations of beers, it would be impossible to list 'em all, but some of the best that are readily available include: Sunthief (Kristallweizen), Grandfather Raven (Double Stout), BeakTweaker (IPA), Trickster (IPA) and Tamerline (Brown Ale). All of these are strong offerings for their beer types. This is a perfect place to go for a taster flight since it is quality across the board. Perhaps the best beers are some of the more unique ones that are seasonally available. I would strongly recommend trying (if available): Great Grandfather Raven = A rich bourbon stout which any stout drinker will love Festivus Holiday Ale = Wonderful spiced beer perfect for the holidays or as a warmer Splinters = A bourbon barrel scotch ale that is a great evening nightcap, winning many local awards Pour Les Oiseaux = A fantastic Saison/Farmhouse Ale which pairs well with food or alone Ambiance & Service: Set in a Redmond business park, it's the typical area you'd expect to find a start-up brewery. It lends itself well to the after work crowd from Microsoft, Nintendo, Astronics, and Terex. You can expect to find this place busy on weekdays after work as well as during weekends. The actual brewery doesn't have a kitchen or stock food, but there are typically food trucks out in the parking lot, and there are several places (Jimmy Johns, Zeek's Pizza et.) that will deliver to the location. It's a business model that works and allows Black Raven to focus on beer. The inside of the bar itself is very dark, you don't get much natural light in the front (even with the windows) and the back bar/seating area is even darker. The cold concrete floors and dark wood chairs/tables also tend to darken the room/mood. That said, for someone like myself who enjoys Irish Bars, it makes you feel at home. The larger dark wooded tables and chairs feel sturdy and provide a shot of testosterone to the place, and the leather chairs (if you can get one) are comfortable. Service is solid--it's clear that the brewmaster, bartenders, and servers all believe in the product and enjoy working in the beer industry. You can usually try a taster or two before buying, and the staff will talk you through the current unique releases as well as what's on the horizon. Overall it's a pleasant, but not spectacular, experience whether you're at the bar, at a table, or filling up a growler and going. Final Thoughts: If I had someone visiting the Greater Seattle area who liked microbrews and didn't want to brave the traffic into Seattle itself, this would be the perfect spot to take them. You've got solid beer types across the spectrum here, a nice cozy environment with little parking/driving fuss. What's missing? The location isn't linked to anything else exciting in the area, the lighting is a little dim, and while the beer is diverse the patrons are not--it feels more like an extension of the Microsoft campus than Seattle. -AC read more

Before I start, I want to clarify that I am a fan of this brewery and (some) of the beers they brew. However it doesn't quite get a 5 star rating from me for the following reasons: Some days their services are decent and some days they are just off. I always seem to see at least one new server and/or bartender every time I visit and I don't mean that as necessarily a good thing. Some of their beers are great. My favorites are Great Grandfather Raven, Grandfather Raven, Wisdom Seeker, La Mort Rouge, an maybe a few others. All of their other brews are just okay. Not bad but definitely not great. I partially blame the typical Seattle beer drinkers who seem content with drinking just okay beer and dont venture out to try new stuff. It's really funny because a lot of people I interact with on a daily basis seem to be into beer at surface but most of them don't actually seem to want to try anything new! "They" arrive and just get their go-to amber or pale ale. And they order "another" pint of the same beer when they are done wirh the first pint. I digress.... but yeah maybe the brewery has to adjust to cater to this type of crowd. I showed up a day after the Great Grandfather Raven release (their best beer imho) and noone was drinking it!! If this was Michigan, Chicago, or even San Diego, this beer would have gotten some national attention already!! And the keg would have kicked the same day. In Seattle/Redmond, it's still flowing. More for me I guess! Anyway, Black Raven is the best brewery on the Eastside by FAR. It's actually pretty much the only brewery I visit on a regular basis in the Bellevue/Redmond area. They are experimental with their beers (playing with different barrels, etc) which is awesome (please keep this up!!).
