Sometimes I hesitate to walk into Black Sheep, because I know I'm going to walk out with multiple things. Then I remember that I have lots of people in my life who deserve fun things and I go in anyways. Most of the gift stores in town have a pretty static selection of wares, with sections from a handful of vendors that might change seasonally. Black Sheep feels more curated, with a much wider selection of options that clearly excite the owners as they scour the country for new and unique gifts, and they change constantly. Every time I go in, I find many, many things that weren't on the shelves the last time. Many are from local makers, and many are just things I've never seen anywhere else. Obsessed with this place! I love stopping in here when I have some time to kill or need to find a gift. They have such a unique selection of everything from baby items to cooking supplies to jewelry and they are constantly getting new products. The owners are local and always in there working. Black Sheep is one of those quiet little gift shops sitting smack dab in the middle of Irvington's East Washington Street row of little shops that is so deceptively simple in presentation that you might be tempted to pass it by. Don't. Inside Black Sheep Gifts is an absolutely delightful collection of gifts that are artsy, feel good, occasionally snarky, quite often fair trade/organic/locally made, and available in a wide range of prices. While I often find the local shops like Black Sheep Gifts filled with unreasonably priced cutesie fare that will break a month after you buy it, Black Sheep Gifts is seemingly different with products that lean toward affordable while also appearing to be of a high quality. The East Washington Street strip of Irvington shops looks as if it can be difficult to access, but actually it's quite the opposite with both street parking and parking behind the buildings. Unlike another certain artsy/fashionable neighborhood in town that will go nameless (it rhymes with fraud whipple), Irvington's parking is free and surprisingly plentiful despite the crowds that can gather even on weeknights (but especially on weekends) at local faves like Jockamo's, Black Acre, and other eateries. The young adult population doesn't tend to frequent Irvington quite as often, mostly owing to the fact that Irvington isn't a bar scene and doesn't offer quite the multitude of retail shops as is available in that neighborhood. That said, there's quite a bit in the area and Black Sheep Gifts is a welcome addition to it all. While Irvington can be a frustrating experience for someone in a wheelchair, there's no such concerns at Black Sheep Gifts, a remarkably wheelchair friendly establishment from its entryways to its well situated displays and interior design. While a larger wheelchair may have some troubles avoiding the knocking over of merchandise, and breakables do exist here, for the most part this is one of the more accessible gift shops I've seen. Arriving only a few days after Christmas, I immediately noticed a substantial area of the shop devoted to a 50% off Christmas section. There was also a nice, but not overwhelming, variety of items including jewelry, housewares, handles, children's toys, refrigerator magnets (including more adult-oriented ones), various totes, delightfully artsy umbrellas, wall decorations, and a few items where it was noted that a portion of the proceeds would benefit charity. The person attending the cash register, whom I believe to have been the owner, was friendly without giving off that hard-sell vibe and didn't give off an evil glare when I opted to not make a purchase during this visit (but most certainly will in future visits). I would offer one tip to the mobility impaired and that is that Black Sheep does have a slightly uneven floor with a bit of a dip at one point. I noticed it and actually looked at my wheelchair to see if I was tipping over. Fortunately, it was just a slight slope in the flooring. I'd think this would be particularly noticeable for someone walking with a cane or for someone with an awkward gait. I'm not quite willing to boost Black Sheep up to the five-star range, mostly because I think a five-star should be reserved for an establishment that is not only top notch across the board but also a place where I simply couldn't make it out the door without a purchase. That said, there's simply no doubt that Black Sheep is going to become a "go to" place for my unique gift shopping and for those difficult to buy for people in my life. I mean, seriously, what an awesome deal - you get great gifts, buy local, and support a great neighborhood. read more

The Black Sheep is a cute gift shop here in Irvington. It has unique offerings for moms, baby, kids, and friends. I would say about 30-40% of the products are labeled as organic, fair trade, recycled, or locally made...all of which are important to me. Some of the items can be found on ThinkGeek, and I'm sure 95% of the items can be found online, but that isn't going to put money back into our local economy, is it? I purchased a cute kitchen towel and will certainly be back as birthdays and holidays roll around. Some of the items include: handsewn aprons for ladies, little girls, and dolls; fair trade recycled cotton kitchen towels; quirky kitchen items like spoons, mixing bowls, and salt shakers; garden art, picture frames, cute holiday decor; hand-strung beaded jewelry from locals; tiny magnetic balls (nanobeads? buckeyballs?), inspirational magnets, and even a line of environmentally friendly greeting cards printed using soy inks. As a bonus, there is a wall of candies in clear plastic pails. It makes me think of the penny candy store in my home town that we would ride our bikes to in the summer. This shop has an eclectic mix of gifts, toys, and women's clothing. Located along Washington Street, there is street parking out front and a shared lot behind the row of businesses. I found the variety to be more unique than most gift shops I've been to, but familiar enough to be appealing. Although the shop is relatively small, I didn't feel like it was overstocked and restrictive for movement. Though I didn't have anything in mind when browsing, I did stumble upon something I had been planning to buy and at a price that was very affordable. Double win!! This is not only one of my Irvington faves, it is one of my overall favorite gift shops! I go in occasionally just to browse and almost always walk out with something either for myself or with a gift for someone. The shop is well kept, as in organized, easy to browse, clean; and they continually get in different product. The owners are very nice and make you feel welcome. I also respect and admire how much they are involved and support the Irvington community. There are items for all age ranges and all price ranges, from practical to decorative to just fun. There's even a candy section. Tips: 1. Ask to see the adult magnets that are discreetly available for appropriate ages 2. They carry many interesting lines of "artistic" jewelry, pottery, ceramics, art prints, baby gifts, and kitchen gifts, plus a small line of greeting cards. I love the string of shops here in Irvington and I really love Black Sheep. I was looking for some little additions to my Christmas gifts last year and this is just the place. A very nice store, but sparse on the selection of gifts. I liked what they offered, and went there for something I knew they carried based on the vendor's website, but it isn't a place I could browse to find a last minute gift at. I purchased Poo-Pouri, which isn't available at many places, so I was glad to find a place that had it. The other day I ventured into Black Sheep. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the store sold mostly locally made, fair trade, and organic items. All of the items were novel (from candles to children's toys to housewares to jewelry). Also, the lady working at the cash register, the owner I assume, was very nice. I ended up buying three stackable rings with letters for initials on them. Very cute! Overall I thought the store was very unique as intended (It is called black sheep). I live in Irvington, and Black Sheep is my favorite store in all of Indianapolis. I can always find the perfect gift for anyone I'm shopping for, whether it's B&B guests, a 3-year-old nephew, a picky teen, or my 86-year-old mother. It's a fun shop filled with fun things, and Lisa, the owner, constantly gets new stock, so it's a fresh experience every time I visit, which is pretty often. Prices are reasonable, the items are unique, and the owner is always friendly and chatty. They have a lot of reasonably priced gifts and toys and most importantly the owner is really friendly, but not at all overbearing. They have a large selection of children's gifts too. One of my all time best retail experiences! I thought maybe, I would be able to find a few gifts for Christmas and my mom asked me along to one of her favorite spots. They were so pleasant, so helpful, and never in that overbearing way. I found everything I needed for my shopping. They do a great job of making you feel at home. In fact, I was eyeing a beautiful bag for myself but I'm not shopping for me so I walked away and apparently as soon as I left, they set it aside just in case (they knew) I would be back for it!
