How have I never written a review for Global Gifts?! I've been visiting this shop since well before I moved to Indy. I'd swing by almost every visit to Indianapolis I made for years. They offer beautiful gifts from around the world--everything from statues to wall hangings to scarves to musical instruments to jewelry to coffee and tea. I always love seeing what fair trade goodies they have in stock when I'm on Mass Ave! During holiday season, they have an array of ornaments that you don't want to miss. I saw a snowflake one on my last visit that was so stunning! Don't forget to grab a chocolate bar or two at checkout. Not only are they fair trade, some are also vegan (hooray for dairy free people like me!)... and all that I've tried are delicious! Global Gifts is definitely worth a stop during your time downtown! I don't want to say that I've been a fan of Global Gifts for a long time, but I remember when it was just one store on North Michigan Road. I lived only a few blocks away at the time and it was a kind of rough time in my life - I could slip into Global Gifts and experience both kindness and a wide array of prices that allowed me, even at the time on a fixed income, to find something that would make my home smile. Of course, Global Gifts has grown and my own life has changed dramatically. The North Michigan Road store gave way to Nora and eventually this location on Mass Avenue along with Bloomington, IN and Columbus, OH. Certain things haven't changed - Global Gifts is still mission minded and kind and devoted to creating sustainable economic opportunities and safe/equitable working conditions for artisans and farmers from over 40 countries. They have a website where you can actually shop by country, including a current special upgrade to Priority Mail until December 16th. They have a delightful rewards club. They definitely do not spam, though you will get periodic e-mails about specials and updates regarding the current respons to the health pandemic. All products, 100%, are fair trade verified and ethically made. They offer free standard shipping on orders over $60. This location has a definite Mass Avenue feeling. It's worth noting that while all the Global Gifts locations are related, they're not always the same. The Mass Avenue location is a little more narrow, consistent with Mass Avenue stores, though they do a nice job of keeping things accessible. The front door is level to the ground and easy to access. If you need help due to mobility - trust me, these folks will help. It's worth noting that Global Gifts is a non-profit organization - 501c3. An awful lot of the folks you see in the stores are actually volunteers and many of them have been volunteering for years. Global Gifts follows a JEDI Committee Charter - "Global Gifts is committed to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in principle and in action, in the way we operate our business and the way we further our mission and vision in line with the principles of Fair Trade." As I recall, they started life out of a Mennonite Church and I believe many of those involved continue to be associated, though it is actually it's own organization/business I believe. What can you find here? Clothing items, chocolate, coffee, tea, home decor, wall decor, jewelry, books, some music, and a whole lot more. I honestly can't imagine going through my holiday season without visiting Global Gifts. The original manager back in the day, Julie, was a compassionate supporter of some of my own early outreach events including early Tenderness Tour events. Truly, this has been a wonderful business with wonderful people for an awfully long time. I fall in love with everything in this store, everytime I step through the doors. They "create sustainable economic opportunities and safe and equitable working conditions for disadvantaged artisans and farmers from over 40 different countries" (from their website). Super awesome. Because their items are fair trade, your purchases actually end up paying to give each maker a fair wage in exchange for their handicraft. They're a 501c3 business! They sell everything from jewelry to home decor, bags, and accessories. Everything is so creative, colorful and unique. Such a special place. Very cool shop that is volunteer-run. All kind of clothes, headwear, kids stuff, decor, etc. It's cute and they've got the countries that have made the stuff on the wall. Glad they can bring a bit of some culture into this area. Some of the items are a bit expensive, but the sale section actually gave great discounts!! I love the cute, quirky cards. When I grow up.... I plan to take my litter of imaginary children to Global Gifts in hopes of raising some very smart and worldly kiddos. From the Putamayo Presents CDs of international music (available to listen to samples) and geography-based books to international recipe books and toys, I have to fight the urge to purchase every cultural-based youth item I come into contact with. Similar to all of the other reviews, I love knowing where my money is going when I make a purchase at Global Gifts. In addition to the aforementioned items, they also boast a wonderful selection of house decor, jewelry, scarves and now, during the holidays, the most amazing collection of international ornaments you ever did see. The location, just a block from mi casa, makes this a frequent stop when meandering down Mass Ave's favorite shops. It feels really good to purchase products that have a story, especially when the story is bringing hope and income to others in need. After trying out another new restaurant on Mass Avenue, my wife and I stopped in three nearby gift shops. This was our favorite. There are small items from around the world that range from jewelry and clothing, to food items, to art projects, and Christmas ornaments. There were spices and hand made greeting cards. Each item also tells you which country the crafter was from. It was mentioned by several of the staff that the artisans are paid a "fair wage" for their goods. I'm not sure who determines that wage, but it sounds like more than most places do. Anyway, we saw a number of items that interested us enough to make purchases. This fair trade shop on Mass Ave carries products from around the world -as you'd assume from the name. You'll find mostly handcrafted items ranging from woven potholders to jewelry. I've been to several stores like this one, but what caught my attention was the size. They have some serious square footage which gives it sort of a market feel. Upbeat, world music played and every corner was filled with bright colors, intriguing textures, and interesting objects. Welcome to the magical and multicolored and flavored world of ...well...the world. But on Mass Ave. In Indy--isn't that handy? Since I'm a chick, I'll go ahead and self-identify as a "gatherer." Such creatures as myself are always in search of the reddest cherry, the yellowest flower and the sparkliest... whatever. This shop is filled with a multitude of colors with which to fill your basket--which was probably woven in Bangladesh. Who doesn't love a store with a heart- this one, dedicated to fair trade items, instead of the Nike and K-mart-famous-model brand sweat shop line of products where people are treated and paid horribly. Far cheerier story for this shop. And speaking of the swoosh, the hunters can find stuff here, too. Most especially, gifts for friends or your steady gatherer.Great jewelry and colorful gifts and bits and pieces for the house. Not outrageous, but not a discount place either. But with fair wages you will have a good conscience buying here. I love the merchandise here, there is something for everybody. I took off a star mainly for the staff hovering over every person in that place. I couldn't walk two steps without being asked if I knew about this that and the other. Global Gifts and I have a love hate relationship. I love to shop there, but I hate what it tends to do to my budget. This little shoppe off of Mass Ave is full of goods from all around the world. From jewelry, scarfs, some kids toys, teas, coffee, and a mix of other trinkets, this place is full of great gift items for friends and/or family, or even yourself. The prices are pretty good, plus they go to support a variety of causes. From HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, poverty, education, etc. I also love their Country Club card in which after you purchase 5 items from 5 different countries, you will receive 20% off of any single item on your next visit. This place. So much cool! Another stop that we made while visiting Mass Ave. Both the employees in the store were super friendly and knowledgeable about the products in the store. Scott and I started at the puzzle boxes because we love them, only a lot. That was when the first employee approached us and nicely asked if we need help finding anything. We let her know that we were from outta town and she let us know there was free coffee and to just let her know if we needed anything. We probably spent 30 minutes in the store looking at all the cool stuff that we wanted to buy, but travelling is expensive and we couldn't spend the remainder of our bank accounts there, we did end up walking out with some bomb ass chocolate, green tea mints, a bracelet, some super spicy "Swazi Fire" sauce and some of the best Chai Tea I've ever had. The best part? It's all fair trade, which for those of you who may not know means that all the merchandise inside the store was given fair compensation and it's not made with child labor/slave labor. The employees were awesome and knowledgeable on all the cool stuff in the shop, super nice and I so wish I had gotten their names because they really made the experience what it was. Without them then we wouldn't have spent as much time in there exploring and tasting lovely coffee! I usually hit this spot first when looking for a niche gift for a friend, or a nice piece of decor. The pricing on some items is a bit high, but they're unique pieces so it makes sense since they have to pay the artist and still make a profit. I went (ran) here on Small Business Saturday, an Amex-sponsored event where a $10+ purchase at this location would automatically earn you a $10 credit. So I went and purchased a beautiful tea towel featuring the Scrabble board. It was a $14 item, but after the credit it only cost me $4. Score! read more

After a small brunch at the Garden Table with my mom and grandma, we decided that we were going to do a little browsing around the Mass Ave stores as usual. I take that back, my mom and I browse, but my grandma likes to snatch the keys and runaway to the car. Anyway, for some reason my mom always naturally walks into this store first. This store is probably my least favorite of all the Mass Ave shops. I don't necessarily hate it, but it never has anything I find interesting at all. However, the other day, I did find two items I liked. I was massively shocked. There were some silly crocheted animal scarves that I absolutely would buy if I had some money lying around waiting to be spent. Then there was also a super cute plaid blanket scarf that I liked, but my mom and I looked at each other said that we could easily make this with the right fabric. I have to be fair though when it comes to this store. It's just not my aesthetic and it's not a price I would pay for a lot of these items. However, it is a fair trade store and they do have a mission of serving impoverished artisans and producers. Great concept. Great idea. You might love the aesthetic, but it's not really mine. I know this every time I step in there, but I will definitely continue to go in there and look occasionally just to see what they have in stock. read more

There really is something for everyone here...from $2-$100. I always talk to the most interesting people, usually the volunteers. Not much different between this Mass Ave. location and others. It's very small but has pretty good variety. Well curated for one to find something for anyone-jewelry, mugs, greeting cards, journals, food, home decor, clothing, to name a few. Descent selection of Fair Trade coffee and food with samples of some of the coffee for you to self serve and try. During my July visit they had really nice clay plant pots on display in the front window and inside. They featured beautiful organic patterns, not found in basics you buy at nurseries. So, this is a great place to get gifts for gardeners. Not sure what will come of the pots when growing season ends, though.... If I could give 0 stars I would. How incredibly rude is Dorothy. A volunteer working register buzzed her to come up due to a technical error and she shoved her out of the way after annoyingly saying "ugh you buzzed??" Was also very rude to the volunteer who was nothing short of sweet offering me coffee and showing me some of her favorite items in the store. Dorothy got flippant with the volunteer who couldn't answer the phone (she was quite a bit older and may have had vision problems etc.) really sad you'd treat people volunteering their time during this time of year like that. Global Gifts is a great store with a great message. They are a fair trade store with an assortment of items from a variety of countries. Their items include, pottery, art, soap stone statues, jewelry, scarves, etc. Each piece has such a unique story. I bought a soapstone statute known as the harmony statue. It was made in Kenya and the proceeds help children attend schools. The piece had a card explaining its origin and its cause. what makes Global gifts even more special is how helpful and knowledgeable the staff are. They are there to help explain their cause and the specialness of the different items. They even have a rewards program where if you buy items from five different countries, you get 20% off of your next purchase. As mentioned, these folks are an absolute joy to work with. I have never been in this shop and not had a bright, perky employee help me out. What absolutely rocks about this shop are the fantastic prices and the products themselves. Each item on the any shelves of this place comes from a unique country and and helps provide income for folks from the area. If you are like me and become a frequent shopper, you are given a store passport which gets a new stamp for every country you purchase from. After you have bought from five countries, you are given a huge discount on your next purchase!
