The vibe is cool with music playing, garage doors that open up to the outdoor patio & a friendly staff. We arrived mid afternoon on a sunny Sunday for pizza. As the owner(s) say, why the name Black Shirt, "it's my symbol of rebellion- Johnny Cash". " Black shirts stand for rebellion, independence, and the courage to stand apart." And their pizzas do stand apart from others! We ordered the War Pig Pizza and a small Caesar Salad. The pizza was topped with a red sauce & a cheese blend, with cotija, pepperoni, prosciutto, bacon, sun-dried tomatoes & a chipotle-maple glaze - it was outstanding! The combination with these ingredients made for a delicious craveable pizza. I especially liked the glaze, more sweet than spicy. However, the salad was just okay, the dressing didn't have a lot of flavor & the lettuce could have been more fresh. I have heard such great things about this brewery and people talking about their pizza, that it was top of mind last time I ordered delivery. What can i say aside from, they are THE BEST! I love their style crust! Thin and crispy but not TOO thin. More NY style which is my fave. The garlic bread was also superior. Get an extra side of marinara if you're saucy like me. Blackshire brewing offers absolutely phenomenal beers, and that is what I would usually write about. However, I tried the pizza yesterday, and I'm still thinking about it. Without being dramatic, I think this was the best pizza I've ever had in my life. I absolutely could not believe it. Crust was perfect. Combination of flavors and textures were what could only be called culinary art in science in perfect fusion. They even have a special ranch to go with it that blew my mind. This is one of my favorite spots in Denver for a casual trivia night! We came on a Thursday night for their weekly trivia, which is always so much fun. We got the Hotel California pizza with mozzarella, tomato, basil, and balsamic, and it was absolutely delicious (as you can see it got eaten before I could take a picture!). The pizzas here are consistently great, they are thin crust but are never burnt and always have a generous amount of toppings. Trivia style is great and is run by a great host, and the staff is always kind and attentive, which really makes the experience even better. Rino Hidden-in-Plain-Sight Gem Funny enough, I spent all last summer right across the street on the rooftop at Catbird and somehow never realized this place was a brewery. Big mistake.... I was missing out! The staff here are knowledgeable and cool as hell. I went for a couple of flights and their pizza of the month, pretty sure it had pineapple, chicken, and a few other tasty things going on. I was so hungry I inhaled it before I could even snap a pic... and I don't regret it. Inside, there's a cozy seating area with locals hanging out for happy hour, but head all the way to the back and you'll find a great outdoor beer garden with a stage and misting machines to keep you cool. I'll definitely be back for live music one evening with a pint in hand. Came on a Friday evening (around 6:30) with the hubs and little one. It was busy but not so bad that we were unable to find a table that could accommodate us and the stroller, which was nice. A good mixture of couples, friend groups, and families with younger children. Lots of games and art supplies to entertain. Loved that. Wish there were a few less televisions but alas. Decor was music forward. Good location with some outdoor seating. It took a little while for a server to come to our table, but I'll chalk that up to Friday night busyness. Our server wasn't particularly personable - at least to us. She seemed nicer to other tables; not sure why as we didn't do anything to warrant coldness. I had two 5oz pours: Bonzo (Pistachio-Lavender Rye Pale Ale) and RAPTURE VOL. 2 (Blonde Ale w/ Passionfruit & Mango). Both were good and different though not sure I'd want larger pours of them. For food, we started with Garlic Nots, which were amazing but could have used a bit more marinara to accompany them. Then we had a large Foxy Lady - I was very disappointed especially considering all the stellar reviews. The crust was undercooked and the dispersion of ingredients was terrible. Some slices had all pineapple and no meat, others the opposite. I had higher hopes and am really bummed about the experience. Likely won't return given all the other options in the area. read more

Awesome brewery in RiNo Art District. My wife who happens to know the Jim the Owner worked together once upon a time. We strolled in not knowing if Jim would be there and lo and behold there he was about ready to leave for the evening when we walked in with arms wide-open. He greeted us with a big smile and shock on his face. Before he left we had a chance to catch up and tried a pint or two of his local favorite beers and ordered a pizza (delicious). We certainly wish we had more time to spend, but it was great seeing him and catching up. We wish him continued success on a great local establishment that appears to be thriving in downtown. After he left, we stayed a bit to take in the museum like artifacts. The brewery acts as a curator of local Denver history. Black Shirt is a must visit if you're in downtown Denver and they're known for their innovative and adventurour beers. We hope our travels plans will lead us back to Black Shirt and hope we'll have more time with Jim. read more

Visiting from the east coast and staying at the Catbird Hotel across the street so we've gotten lunch here twice during our visit. I've seen some reviews saying the pizza is great and the beer is so-so. I have to disagree, both are amazing. My wife and I shared the War Pig pizza the first time here and it's delicious. For our next visit, we split the Four Horsemen which was also fantastic. As for beers, I tried both the Paint It Black stout and the Colorado Public Ale. The stout was a very good dry stout. A little thin but still tasty and refreshing. The Colorado Public was fantastic and I gave it a 4.5/5 on Untappd. Full-bodied and hoppy without being overwhelming. We settled on a flight so we could try the 4 main beers that peaked our interest. Our waitress was so sweet! She recommended a lot and told us about the beers. I visited Black Shirt Brewing for the first time two years ago and have hung out here many times since! Definitely a reliable go-to for beer and pizza, located just down the street from my gym. I take friends here all the time. Sometimes parking can be a challenge, especially when there's the weekly or monthly biker meetup that happens! Was also hungry so got the Panama slice with honey, sausage, onions, corn and ricotta. I really liked the taste of the toppings but didn't love the crust itself. A friend got the garlic knots and while it didn't visibly look burnt, it had a very charred aftertaste. The space was cool, and I like how they did table service since not super common at a brewery. We are a beer state Love the uniqueness that each brewery brings. They carriy 12 different beers that they brew in-house. They serve cocktails, wines, seltzer, hard seltzer, spirits and sour beer that I wanna go back for. That's not unique. It makes them a spot to go.! What's unique is their delicious pizza crust is made from their spent grains and the taste is distinct. There's a bit of sweetness to it. Love it! I also learned that Jimmy and Karen the husband and wife owners love what they do. This is not just business as usual to them. One of them is always at the location. BSB opened in 2012 and they took over in Dec. of 2021. Certain nights there's a live music. They've received numerous accolades for their beer making skills. I wanted to try their in-house brewed beer and the way to go is their Beer Flights. Pick four and start there! You won't see a Food Truck parked in the vicinity. I visited BSB with a buddy on a busy Friday night. It was packed inside but we got the last two open seats at the window and moved over to a table once some people left and they cleaned it for us right away. The waitress informed us the wait for food would be an hour but we said we'd stick it out. We started with beers and then ordered food. I got a tasty sour beer on tap which came out fairly quickly. Ordered a mediterranean salad and a war pig pizza to split, and this time around she warned an hour to an hour and a half wait. We felt committed at that point so we gambled, and to our surprise, the food showed up at our table in about 20-25 minutes. The salad was a good portion and fresh (greens, spinach, olives, sun dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, greek vinaigrette), but the war pig pizza was the highlight. A bit greasy for my liking (and I mean GREASY) but a good meat to cheese to sauce ratio. The kicker was the sweet chipotle maple glaze which balanced out the salty and slightly spicy meats (pepperoni, prosciutto, bacon). Would definitely order that pie again. Parking is tough to come by in this area during dinner hours, but we didn't have to park too far away. Prices are a little steep but at least the quality justifies it. Aside from some slightly odd service and bad time estimates, we consumed tasty food and beverage for a positive stay. read more

Solid selection of beers, delightful selection of pizzas but not many vegetarian. That being said, they were delicious. We devoured our pizzas; two 16" ones fed our group of 5 just fine. Also if you're vegetarian or vegan -- I would check the menu beforehand to confirm; I vaguely remember salads being available and would hate for you to miss out on a really delightful spot. All the beers were tasty. Our group picked heavier beers - 15% nitro, all the IPAs - and really enjoyed them. We'll have to come back for the lighter ones. Lastly we appreciated the service. We showed up on a quieter day with a puppy and they truly made an effort to check in on us every so often. We ordered the small War Pig pizza & when they say small, they mean it. It's 10 inches (6 small slices) for $24 before tax, so it's enough to share if you order an app OR enough for one with a leftover slice so be mindful of that. I will say the pizza was SO GOOD! They didn't skimp on the toppings & the glaze was a nice touch to give it that oomph! The server was manning the whole place which was a bit slower, but made sure to check on us a couple times. She was very friendly & didn't hover which I appreciate. The vibes are immaculate here. It's moody, laid back, self-seating, good music, & they have entertainment!
