I didn't know what to expect when I was told we were going to Taylor, but I was pleasantly surprised! I don't care what anyone says, I love the vibe of Black Sparrow. My boyfriend's band played here recently and the staff treated them really well and were able to accommodate all of us very easily and we appreciated that so much! The inside is a nice size, comfy furniture, and a patio out back. The food was so good, another person in our group ordered 3 or 4 things off the menu! One thing you should know before coming is that you can get beer, wine, and seltzer here but any liquor or cocktails have to be purchased at the bar right next door but that wasn't a problem at all. I had their house sparkling wine which was a 10/10. Overall, I liked this experience a lot more than some that I've had at venues in Austin - really chill vibe. The interior is open with a high ceiling and a large raised stage, a robust sound system, a bar that serves a variety of beer and wine (no mixed drinks), and a tasteful collection of vintage chairs and tables. This is such a whole in the wall if you're wanting to try eat, but it's delicious! My boyfriend tried the pulled pork grilled cheese that was on special and still talks about it. PROs: $2 Topo Chico, friendly staff CONs: They share a wall with another club which has really loud rock music playing which shakes the entire room. That doesn't matter much since BLACK SPARROW MUSIC PARLOR has terrible acoustics. The 'sound system' is one big pair of PA speakers sitting on the floor and they haven't done anything to diminish the echos off the wooden walls, floor and ceiling. It's not a listening room on a busy night since it isn't anyone's responsibility to ask the few locals at the bar to keep their voices down so the 50 or so patrons who drove 45 minutes and paid the admission price can hear the band. Bring your own cushion to sit on because the antique wooden chairs aren't padded. The chairs are 5 in each row so if you get here late you'll end up sitting behind your date and 'parking on the street' means you may have to walk a bit. read more

Great dive bar and music venue, but this is not a restaurant. Dark and cavelike, the interior is packed with secondhand furniture arranged to face a well-lighted stage surrounded by large, ancient speakers. Music was a little too loud for me but the acts we saw ranged from very good to very terrible, with most of the terrible acts apparently being local fan favorites -- so yay for the support of local artists. Limited food menu (sandwiches, mainly), so this should not be your pick if you are looking for a meal, but they have a long list of beers. No spirits are served, just beer and wine. For the cool dude crowd, this place is perfect to hang out, chill and damage your hearing a bit. Maybe pick up a bedbug or two.... read more

We were looking for some live music without having to drive all the way down to Austin so we decided to check out this place and we were pleasantly surprised. The band that was booked that night was great and the space feels very intimate and cozy. It almost felt like we were hanging out in someone's living room. We hope this place will stick around as it offers a perfect alternative to small live music venues in Austin and with the cheapest beer costing you $2, it doesn't break the bank either! read more

Not horrible, just not my cup of tea. I never felt really very welcomed at the place when I was there, well pretty much all over Taylor Texas. But when going over to the Sparrow, there are cliques that just aren't interested in letting people in unless you think just like they do. Same ole beer and wine and some talent here and there. read more

Very cool venue that gets good bands. Not much of a bar, but you can grab a beer from the friendly guy manning the bar. They always seem to get good talent and the sound is excellent. I'm excited to see what they ultimately become, because they are off to a great start. I hope we see more venues like this come to downtown Taylor. read more

Its easy to build a bar and set up a music stage. But if the vibes not there , then its "sayonara baby" There is definite good friendly vibe to this joint. Shannon the owner, took a gamble. She renovated a crumbling historical building and built a cool music venue smack dab in the middle of Taylor Texas, of all places. That shouldn't be a surprise since Taylor does has a rich history of music venues, especially during the sixties. Blues masters traveling the " Chitlin Circuit" made Taylor a favorite stop. I especially love the old vintage pinball machines they have there. The furnishings looks like they bought out the Goodwill store. But it works. Most of the chairs and sofas looks like the stuff my great grandma had in her 2 story 1920 house. Along with the music, they sometimes have old classic movies showing on a far wall. The night I was there they had "The Rocky Horror Picture Show " playing. Rocky Horror in Taylor. My-Oh-My! Iam glad the Taylor "blue hairs" were not there. The stage is huge with a Christmas light back drop. They even have yoga classes on Sunday whereas after class they all sit around drinking mimosas. Many of their music acts are free. So get out of Austin.Spend some time in Taylor, Eat some fine Bar-B-Q at Louie Muellers across the street, or around the corner at the Taylor Cafe. Have a couple of pints at the Texas Beer Co. then go hear some music at the Black Sparrow. read more
