This great old place has gone downhill since the purchase by some local music spot. The ticket prices have gone up and more tables have been placed to maximize the profits. Tables were placed in front of the 2 far dance floor exits and the exits by the stage have been blocked off. Management allows people with beers and open cup drinks on the dance floor and couldn't care less about what is spilled. During the Neal McCoy show, 1/3 of the dance floor was taken up by people standing and drinking. This was once an amazing dance hall, now it's just another place to charge folks high prices to listen to music. read more

Many a great entertainment have graced the stage of this historic building over the decades, but the present owners have turned it into an 'Austin crowd concerts venue'. Swung in here for some dancing and drinking we were greeted by very friendly bartender who were anxious to serve us drinks. They had a live band playing a great country lineup of 90s music. It's a complete small town old dance hall feel if you want to experience old school, Texas Dance hall, this is the place to go. Did not get a chance to try their food but will need to next time. Wish I could put zero stars, I've been coming here since I was 14 and it's been terrific until the renovations, the new head bouncer is consistently on a power trip about anything he can, he confiscated a nicotine product from my of age sibling and threatened to call the cops for smoking indoors when previously he said it was allowed inside. The bar is now extremely overpriced, 45 dollars for 6 beers and that's not even including the 60 dollar general admission ticket for a no name artist. Don't come here. read more

Enjoyed a chicken fried street at the Inn. Was amazing food then walked in to the dancehall. Was excited to go to this older establishment. Music was great BUT it was a concert. Do they just have bands for dancing and not all concerts???? Majorly disappointed not having the ability to dance. So many people on the actual dance floor standing that you were lucky to have 6 couples dance while bumping into each other. Not sure if I'll ever go back due to this. Otherwise, if you didn't reserve a table before selling out there's like one'ish tables that's non reserved. Another disappointment. Purchased reserved seating tickets for the Rick Trevino show on Feb 15. Upon walking in the door, it was obvious there were service issues. The lines at both bars were incredibly long! How long? We were waiting for 30 minutes just to order a beer. When we finally got up to the bar to place our order we were told they didn't have any buckets of beer available. If someone ordered a mixed drink the bartender(s) were going to the other bar to get what was needed for the order. Why not have each bar stocked with the same items? Seems like a no brainer. The owner obviously is aware of the issues at the bars because her employee's were talking about the excuses she makes for why she doesn't change things to accommodate faster moving lines. read more

This was my first time at the historic Coupland Dance Hall. The hall has 2 bars, each over 100 years old and with their own unique origin story. The lighting is fun and inviting, not so dim that you can't see well, but soft enough that you feel free to relax and have a good time. I didn't eat anything though there are bar snacks available. I never had to wait long to get another drink, and the bar staff was friendly. This is a good bar for a beer or a simple well drink, and all of the liquors are good quality. The bathrooms could use a little TLC, but are clean and serviceable. I went there to see the Darrin Morris Band perform, and included a clip of their performance. Enjoy. read more

This place is just adorable. I would give them 5 stars if the bathroom didn't smell like sewage. On a plus side I can hold my breath for longer than I thought I was warned that it was rank and I was all "nahhh I have allergies it'll be fine" My allergies didn't cut it. They have a boot shine person though! Which is absolutely adorable. I have never been to a dance hall that had boot shining. I didn't get mine done but Matt and David's boots look great. Inconsistent at best. The last 3 years have been a shit show. The person who was running it 2 years ago ran it into the ground with the teens and TABC getting involved. She was never sober, constantly popping pills and mixing with alcohol. Now the owner took back over and it's all the same inconsistencies, food isn't great. They flip flop from no steaks, to steaks, to bbq, to bar food only. They tried doing donuts in the morning and that lasted about a month and a half, and now they stopped that. You never know what you're gonna get. Won't return after our last visit. They can't seem to figure out how to properly designate their different sections and make people move with reserved wristbands that were siting in the area with the sign that said reserved and then right before the show came to say it was the family and now we're left with only tables in the way back that you can't see shit from. She literally grabbed the reserved sign and took it down as soon as we pointed it out. Too much of a headache dealing with them. read more

We loved everything about this place- the drive that takes you through small-town TX and the surrounding countryside was beautiful. The dancehall vibe was everything you're looking for in the TX Dancehall Quest to experience great bands and sit close enough to the artists to make eye contact. The big dance floor is sometimes dancing only, and sometimes you'll have folks standing on it, depends on the type of concert. We had one each of their boxed bbq offerings- one brisket and the other smoked sausage and cheese; both were delicious. the prices are reasonable, too. i read some negative reviews about the bathrooms, and want to respond to that. we didn't have the same experience, and want to point out that it's our responsibility, as customers, to treat public restrooms, and those whose job it is to clean them, with respect. don't make a mess, and clean up after yourself. i'll bet that would go a long way toward making using the restroom in a public place a better experience for all involved. Finally- keep in mind that this is a small business, owned by a longtime music lover named Abbey, and she works on a shoestring budget to bring great talent to this little gem. Go. This past weekend, the wife and I came out early and ate at the restaurant, watched a show in the dancehall, and then stayed the night in the inn. Therefore, it is only right that I revise my old review on Yelp and give you readers a full three-pronged revision for nearly everything this place is... restaurant, dancehall, and inn. RESTAURANT: Strait up, I am a bit of a Texas BBQ snob, and I ate nothing else but their BBQ. So with that said, I ate every meat they had to offer and here are my ratings for each (out of 5 stars): Ribs - 3.5 stars, Brisket - 3 stars, Sausage - 3 stars, Pork (pulled) - 4.5 stars. I thought the sausage was below average, the ribs were merely okay (a little too charred), but worse of all, the brisket was not tender. Wife loved her sweet potato stuffed with the pulled-pork, which is not too surprising as the pork was the best of their meats. Take notice that I gave no 2 or 1 stars on the meat here - it was all passable by my high standards. Nevertheless, this place sits right between Snow and Mueller, so there is definitely more opportunity to be had here should the pit master decide to step up their BBQ game. But I digress, because for some reason there was a raisin in my coleslaw. Yes - a damn raisin. I am going to assume it just fell in there and was not put there on purpose by the slaw maker. The potato salad was really good, as were the beans. Moreover, last Friday night's table service was simply awesome! From what I observed, all of the restaurant's wait staff were so very unbelievably attentive and genuinely personable that I feel they should be greatly commended. Keep up the great work you're doing in this department. DANCEHALL: The first time I came out here a year ago (when I lost my quarter in the jukebox), we saw Dale Watson. Then last January, Shinyribs. This past Friday it was Bob Schneider. All great shows! Overall, this place is a true Texas experience and a solid five-star honkytonk - it is as real as it gets! But that damn jukebox. Stole my quarter. (see my first review below) INN: Have you ever stayed in a 108+ year old brothel-styled inn before? Me either, until here, last Friday night. In fact, I had not encountered any authentic brothel-styled inns that one could stay the night in before anywhere I've ever been. What is brothel-style, you ask? Well here, you walk upstairs into a large, plush, well-furnished parlor. Along the walls of this parlor are seven separate bedrooms. Way back in the day, this parlor would be chock-full of whores, and you could come up and pick one out to go screw in one of these seven rooms. Nowadays, they rent these bedrooms out every Friday and Saturday night, and you have to book them in advance by buying a room ticket through their website. From what I can tell, it is a first-come-first-serve situation when it comes to who stays in which room, meaning if you are first to arrive, you get full pick which of the seven rooms you will slumber in. There was only one other couple there when we stayed, but booking a room here means sharing the parlor common space - including showers, toilets, and kitchen - with up to 12 other people you may or may not know. Also, the parlor serves as a "green room" (or at least that is what Bob Schneider's bandmates told us when we discovered them up there hanging out before the show). You should know the floors are squeaky and walls thin - you can clearly hear what is being said in the parlor from each bedroom as well as what is being said (or done) in adjacent rooms. So keep in mind that any enthusiastic lovemaking will likely be heard by all inn occupants. When we woke up Saturday morning, we were expecting breakfast... but there was none. Though this inn is technically being run like a bed & breakfast, there is no actual breakfast being served. The entire place seemed deserted - not a soul around, both dancehall and restaurant locked up. As such, we quietly moseyed our way out so not to wake the other couple staying there and drove away. All in all, I hope no one bothers to read this updated review. There's a part of me that feels this place is too cool to share with others. So far it has proven to be the best place to catch live popular Texas acts because it has never been too overly crowded. However if word gets out, the coolness of this place will likely change, the place will get too crowded, and perhaps I may run into trouble booking a room in the future. These possibilities is what I fear most... Therefore, PLEASE! Pay no attention to this update and STAY AWAY from this place! read more

Pretty disappointed. We booked a room at the "BED AND BREAKFAST" and went the "dancehall" to dance for the evening for our anniversary. The opening band had a few songs to 2-step to, but the music that played while the bands switched was pop/rock style music. We asked if they could play country so we could dance and the staff stated the main band chooses the music and customers cannot request music during intermission. The main band went on pretty late, 10:00-10:30. They played rock/pop covers and a few originals, only 2-3 2-stepping songs. Customers were leaving the facility after 1-2 songs from the main band. We went up to the "bed and breakfast" and the one of the showers had a missing water knob, one shower had mud in it. All light fixtures in every room only had one working bulb, fans covered in dust. In the middle of the night a huge party had come into the "bed and breakfast" and was extremely loud. Eventually the people were asked to leave if they were not staying at the inn. The "continental breakfast" offered online wasn't to be found. The main kitchen was closed and the "bed and breakfast" online states to be in the main kitchen. I called twice to find someone to ask about breakfast and was called hours later to be told that they leave cereal in the kitchenette in the b&b and milk in the refrigerator. read more

Since our valentine's day plans didn't happen, we decided to head out for steaks at the Coupland Dance Hall for our V-day redo a week late. Our friends keep telling us to go out and try the food and we just hadn't ventured out that way. We were so happy we went! We loved the atmosphere, the food was delicious & the service was the best we have recieved anyplace in a long time. We have eaten good food many places, but the experience- service primarily- ruins the experience for us. Amber was our waitress, she was very informative when we told her that we had never been there. She was happy and friendly. I usually tell waitresses to bring a pitcher of water and leave it on the table, but my glass never went empty. Amber made sure we wanted for nothing, she recommended items, she thanked us for coming and invited back. The dinner was delicious, but the service made our night! Good job Amber, I wish there were more people who were kind & enjoyed their job like you do. We will be back! read more

Wowzers! What a cool place!! The dancehall is something you would see in a movie. Maybe because it's been used in several films. The Inn, restaurant, and dancehall have all been sold by the Worthy's at the end of June. Abbey Road is the new owner and she has some great things planned for this Texas Gem. We played a show here for Robynn Shayne and were able to see the ins and outs of the place. It definitely needs some work to help maintain it's charm, but also to keep it up and running. If you have ever purchased anything used and you intend to keep it as long as you can then you know it takes time and money. Transitions from the old to the new are always hard for people when it comes to businesses and sometimes you have hiccups that can make you ask, "Why are you trying to change anything?". All I can say is be patient and watch the magic happen. We sat down to dinner before the show and ordered our chicken fried steaks, chicken fried chicken, grilled chicken, and sides galore. Everything was very good right down to the baked beans sprinkled with bacon in a tiny caldron. Did I mention the bacon? We were able to get a look at the Inn and all of the rooms are really great. We are going to stay here next time we have a show. Abbey has some great plans for this place, but she also knows when something ain't broke don't fix it. With change sometimes there is staff change. Most of the staff has remained onboard. The sound system and the acoustics in the dancehall are really great!! Ron the Sound Engineer is one of the best we have worked with. All in all this place is great and we look forward to returning for business and pleasure. The fact that it's less than an hour from Austin is amaze balls!! Go check it out for yourselves. If you have any issues or suggestions just let Abbey or her staff know. I mean, how can you fix a problem if no one tells you when it happens, right? The cowboys are coming! Cowgirls too! Cowboy boots, Cowboy hats, jeans and western shirts everywhere, cowboy country at its best. Great county music and dancing for all that like that style on the weekends and on Thursday night. The restaurant hours are 5:30pm to 9pm on Thursday and 5:30pm to 10:00pm on Friday and Saturday. Dancehall hours end at 11pm, 12am, and 1am respectively. It has the whole package a bed and breakfast as well, never tried the bed and breakfast though. Since I am not a cowboy and have no cowboy hat or cowboy boots I can stand out in my jeans and tennis shoes but no one cares. We have gone here basically to eat BBQ at least half a dozen times in the last five years or so. We like it and that is why we go back from time to time. I like the onion rings and baked potato. The wife likes the fried okra basket. I don't like okra it is kind of hairy looking to me and I don't like the taste as well but I never did so they maybe good for those that like okra. As for BBQ they have brisket, sausage, pork ribs, chicken you can indulge in. They do have an all you can eat platter for $17 per person. They do have traditional sides potato salad, slaw, baked beans and toast. Other sides are available as well. Yep, they have steaks and chicken fried steak as well. I have never tried eating anything but the BBQ. I and the wife and our friends have always liked the BBQ very much. We always eat too much and never go away hungry. It's a bit of a drive for dinner form Austin but try it if you like BBQ. If you want a scenic drive get out your map and take only back roads and stay off the main roads, it's a lot of fun. I've debated on writing this review since our last experience, I finally decided that it needed to be said. We drove an hour for the barbecue as it has traditionally been very good and we like the atmosphere. We went specifically for the 4 meat bbq meal and beans, my date being from the area and loving their ribs. We arrived at 8:00pm meeting friends to a nearly empty restaurant and were informed that the only thing left was sausage, a few serving of ribs, and two chicken fried steaks. They were also out of their "famous" bbq beans? We were told it was due to the Gary P Nunn concert (which we had planned to see as well) so we rolled with it ordering two orders of ribs and sausage. Another customer had a medical episode, so my date being an OR nurse, took them in the back and rendered medical attention. The situation turned a little serious and she had to help until EMS arrived. She was glad to have been able to help but found upon her return (and an hour wait for our meal) that they had given her order of ribs away. Facing 4lbs of sausage we canceled our order. Our waitress came back and said she could scrounge up a ribeye and baked potato. The steak was surprisingly good but she said the potato appeared to have been microwaved and passed on it. The excuse of the concert being the cause for running out of food at 8:00 didn't quite ring true when we went next door and found the hall at a quarter capacity at best. Still not sure why they gave her dinner away while she saved the life of their customer. Kinda expected the manager to come by and explain or at least say thank you. But I guess he was too busy hiding under his desk in an empty restaurant, I'd probably be pretty embarrassed as well but I wouldn't leave my poor wait staff to bear the brunt of it. I've since heard twice that they are under new ownership, I'd venture to guess that's the real root of the problem. read more

A group of friends and I went to Coupland's first "Got Talent". First of all the talent sang in a different room and only came out to sing a song or two on equipment that barely worked. The poor girl had a beautiful voice that no one could enjoy. Now let's mention the HORRID sewage smell coming from the ladies bathroom. It was so bad we had to use the men's. However you could smell it the moment you walked in the FRONT door. When we asked about it, the owner said it was due to the rain. Ma'am. My husband owns a plumbing company. Stop lying to your patrons and fix your plumbing! Drinks and beers $6-10 each? No wonder our large group were the only adults there and we left before 9. The topping on the cake, we left because the owner accused us of smoking marijuana. Not going to name names but we saw a couple of your employees in the parking lot during their shifts smoking. So.... You might want to address that. These new owners/renters are horrible. We will not be back and I can definitely see why we were the only people there. Oh, they also don't have a TABC license! And it's probably safe to assume the 18 year old bartender most likely isn't TABC certified or Food handler's certified either. So... good luck with that. Stop removing my reviews and start fixing your issues. read more

In the past, if you wanted one of the somewhat few tables in the dancehall, you should buy the meal before the show, because they let those people in first. Now, they are letting people who didn't buy a meal in at the same time they are serving the meal, so buying the meal literally means you get the worst seats to the show! Don't buy the meal if you really want to see the show! Especially if it's a popular show. You'll end up standing all night. Dumb change. read more

How this restaurant stays in business is a mystery. We arrived at 8 pm on Friday, July 19, for dinner followed by dancing to Asleep at the Wheel in the adjacent Dance Hall. I told the two women behind the restaurant counter that we had a party of two for dinner. I asked about the wait time. One of the women said she didn't know. Several other potential dinners went through the same routine and were given pagers. I asked for a pager and received one. We sat outside for 45 minutes. During that time, not a single person with a pager was seated. Most gave up and left. One of the potential dinners went back inside and was told that they were out of everything but fried chicken and potatoes. We finally wised up and left as well. Customer service are just some other words these folks use. They appear to be incapable of having a conversation with their potential clients. Even though the place has had pretty good reviews for years, something is badly broken. Caveat Emptor! if you decide to eat there, don't plan on being seated, much less having any food. read more

Wow what an experience we placed our order at 7:30pm and at 9:30pm were provided a styrofoam container with a barbecue meal as a form of complementary services since our order never came out....I will acknowledge the BBQ was delicious & the sides tasty however the service was below average....more than 10 of our party of 35 left without the items they ordered & the feeling of sheer disappointment from the anticipated delight for what fell below the original real Hype! Mystery what happened to our order especially when the waitress came 3 different times in the hour and a half noting your food will be out next, soon, shortly, in a bit, just a few more minutes...no it will be 10 more minutes, no it was lost by the kitchen, oh we can place it in a to-go container but we ordered a nice sit down with the group Dinner the food I know would have been good...it appeared that the music got all of the attention! read more

Wooden floors, friendly wait staff and OH MY GOD the food. We went expecting a pat green concert and some local flavor and we ended up eating some of the best food ever. The cobbler, fried pickles, chicken, sirloin, garlic mashers, even the salad was amazing. I dont know how they do it. I think its coupland magical fairy dust. We ate our fill and then enjoyed a fantastic night with Pat Green (who was frankly arrogant and lackluster, making everyone else sing his songs), cheap shoe shinin' and cold cold lone stars. Roping a Cowboy!!!!!!!! I recently went here again for about the 4th time. It wasn't as good as the first few times and I think it is management change. I get the NY strip and it is a lot of meat but it wasn't cooked to my asking so I had to send it back. It came back OK and one piece was good and the other was a little chewy. My husband got the "All you can Eat Catfish" for 11.99 and he loved it. My daughter had the Chicken Fried Steak and that sucker was bigger than the darn plate so she only ate 1/2 of it. I tried hers and I liked it much better than my steak and wished I had gotten that. Next time I will. Now...the best part for this here Yankee is the atmosphere and scenery. I feel like I stepped into the wild west. There are so many cowboy hats and boots running around I feel like I am in a 1800's. I like to bring other "Yankees" there just for the experience. Ya know, everyone thinks Texans all own a horse,hat and boots so when you step into this place you feel like you walked into those assumptions. Dinner is good. Great Texas dance hall! Family style with a great atmosphere. Certainly not a pickup joint or meat market. We took our 17 year old daughter once, and a young cowboy approached my husband, and politely asked "Sir, do you mind if I ask your daughter to dance?" It's THAT kind of place. The food in the restaurant is mostly heavy, fried and comfort foods. Not the best for just before dancing, but this IS Texas, so you can't call it a Texas place without chicken fried steak and potatoes. The owners have always been on the premises anytime we've been. Very friendly and personable and add an extra flair to the 'family feel' to the place. Beer in the dance hall is a little pricey, but that might be the reason there's never a fight on the dance floor or the girls aren't dancing trashy. Just go. Make reservations if you have a large crowd in your party....but go. If you're a real Texan, you'll appreciate it. If you're not, you'll understand why the rest of us are. read more

Coupland Dance Hall never disappoints! We started in the restaurant and enjoyed a great steak, cooked just as I requested, and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. Got over into the dancehall and waitresses did an amazing job of keeping up with the bar traffic and very friendly. I've been to Coupland through different shows, busy and not busy, and the staff always greets everyone with a smile and busts their rumps staying on top of the orders. We came to the Kevin Fowler show for NYE. We arrived shortly after the doors opened because we wanted to make sure to get seats. We had several choices at that time, and when we asked a staff member if a particular section was reserved, they said no, so we sat there. Two hours later, after the place has filled up and the opening act was taking the stage, we were told that our section was reserved- no signage, no one saying anything prior. Another couple in the section had driven in from Kansas City to see the show and were religated to holding up the wall, when they too had arrived early to get seats. If the section is "always reserved", then the staff should know this when asked. Also, there were "reserved" signs in other locations, so why did this area not get marked as such? Got fed a BS line about if we "talk near the stage it would be picked up in the microphones." Yet the obnoxious group that was placed in our seats were incredibly loud. Not a very well run establiment and they don't seem to care about railroading their customers to accommodate their buddies. What happened to the hospitality that use to be a given at this establishment? Side note.... They have trouble keeping enough paper products in the bathrooms read more

What a great place. Such an icon of Texas, and it feels just like it should. I love the wooden dance floors, the crappy light system, horrible restroom, and great ambiance. We went and slapped our boots down to the rhythm and had a great night dancing and drinking the night away. I will make one complaint, what is the deal with having to have a $50 tab to be able to pay with credit card. First, that is against you card holders agreement you sign with credit card companies, and more importantly it is kind of a crappy move. Whatever, just remember to get cash before going. read more

First... I love the charm and the quality of performers. Have been a few times and we always have a blast the only down fall and concern I have is everytime I have been there is MANY issues to the bathrooms. Last night we were some of the first patroness in and the staff never prepped the bathrooms. Paper towels were not in holders and several stalls had NO toliet paper and some toilets were full and not flushed...no reason for this with in minutes of opening the doors. I will be back but maybe I will bring a big bag to bring my own towels and toliet paper... since they havent figured that it is needed read more

Clarification: Restarant gets 1 star, or 0 stars, if that were possible. Dancehall gets 4 stars (bathrooms could use improvement, since they smelled like cat urine.) I wish I could review the restaurant separately from the Dancehall. Since I can't, please read the entire review! First, and let this be a warning: Eat before you go! Do NOT eat at the restaurant. Having been forewarned by numerous reviewers, I avoided the barbecue and opted for what I thought would be a seemingly safe cheeseburger, served with guacamole and pico de gallo. With fries? Sure. DON'T DO IT! The hamburger arrived without the fries at first. When they did arrive, they were nasty: cold and limp. The burger tasted as if it had been cooked ahead and warmed over. You know that warmed over taste. You don't want to think about it, because by thinking about it, you'll relive it... and that is something you don't want to do. But.... there it is, folks. Thank goodness for the pico, and the chipotle mayo (best food item I tasted by far.) My friend ordered the mesquite-grilled chicken breast, served with rice and grilled zucchini. Such a tortured chicken breast you never did see! Almost totally black outside, grizzled and dry... I shared my chipotle mayo and guacamole with her so she could swallow it. Very skimpy portions on her meal, by the way. The "loaf of bread" served with your meal is nothing more than a loaf of white belly waddin'.... though the honey butter makes it palatable enough. And of course, you eat it because you're still hungry thanks to the below marginal food. So there. That being said... The Dancehal is a hoot. With our cover to the show came a free drink. I'd suggest sticking with the beer, because the well drinks were... well drinks. But the place is fun, and the dance floor is just dandy, and the music was great, and the people are warm and fun to watch. All in all, a good evening. But... eat before you go. Once upon a time, Coupland was my absolute favorite place to go. Good food, nice dancehall, kids dancing.. The kind of place a 5 yr old to a 90 yr old would love. Now, the little dancehall I once adored is being marketed as a mainstream bar with what seems like greedy hopes of a just making that extra buck. The old dancehall had tables all around, which after a few spins around the dance floor came in handy. You could sit and watch cute little kids learning how to dance, almost like a throw back in time. Now, since it "appeals" more to the college age crowd, there are so many people, the tables have disappeared and the dance floor is so packed with concertgoers, it is impossible to dance. They even took away the mechanical bull and pool tables. They now have big screens, which, by the way, advertised their air conditioning. Fat chance. It was at the very least 110 degrees and many of the fans didn't work. To top it all of, we were harassed at the door when leaving by the "bouncers" and then met by then met by two police cars directly outside. Absolutely ridiculous. Here is an idea, put the tables back, turn the a/c on, and quit acting like a big city bar. Give us back our dancehall. To other people if you are looking for the over-commercialized college hangout, just save your gas, stay in town, and go to Midnight Rodeo. If you want the perfect little dancehall, drive on up to the Cotton Club. It's not much further and it stays true to its roots. read more
