I was there for the open mic last Thursday (Oct. 23, 2025). I had read about the stage, the sound system, the stage lights -- all of which appealed to me. We had gotten there early for me to sign up, so we ordered beer and some food (catfish, fried okra, etc.). Only a handful of people were there, mostly playing pool. It was obviously going to be a slow night, probably because of Halloween. When it was time for me to play, I was still the only person signed up for the open mic. No problem! The food is amazing and I always recommend the bacon cheeseburger. The patty is seasoned well and the bun is something you won't get just anywhere. They also make their chicken fried steak to order in house. There is a lot of variety in music within the parameters that it IS a country dance hall in a historic building. This is an update on my previous review. The service has improved greatly. The new owners (Chris and Emily) have installed a pager system to let patrons know when their food orders are ready for pickup. This has greatly reduced the confusion/frustration on food order mixups. Also, the bartenders have learned quickly (according to my friends that drink...I am a dancer, not a drinker). The music has never been a problem. The bands are always excellent! Another great addition is that they have set up a Reservation Email. If you would like to make a reservation, please contact Katie @ Cotton CountryClubReservations@gmail.com. This has reduced the confusion over table reservations as you can specify in your email where you would like to sit and leave a contact phone number. Katie will call you back as soon as she gets the information. I would make one suggestion to the club though. For newcomers, it would be nice to post a diagram of the seating arrangements online with relation to the band, dance floor, bars, and restrooms (and maybe even table #s) so the new patrons can make an educated decision on where they would like to sit. Also, to promote the club's popularity, it might be advantageous to promote different decades of music as a theme on nights that need more attendance (ie...Oldies Night (50s and 60s), Classic Rock Night, Disco Night, Salsa Night, etc. There are no clubs in the Austin area that promote "Oldies" music on a regular basis and I definitely know that there is a need for a 50s-60s music venue. The Cotton Club is a great place to two-step. The wooden dance floor is awesome. The service is terrific and the drink prices are quite a bargain. This is a bar that serves food. If you are there to eat when there is live music (which is most of the time), they will charge you $10 cover charge per person. We managed to sneak in during a 1 hour window when they were open, yet the live music had not arrived. We were given a hard time about having to leave before the music started or they would charge us a cover charge of $10 each. We managed to get out the door within a few minutes of the band starting. I order the CFS. It was served with a watery gravy on top that made the CFS soggy. The sides were from frozen (onion rings and fried okra). My husband had the CFS sandwich, which he said was good. The fries were from frozen. I really would not describe this place as a restaurant, though the sign out front says Steakhouse. It is a bar. read more

I attended a wedding here recently (though I had been here 15 years ago). This place is just pure Texas fun. The wedding was in the outdoor bar/courtyard area. Great rustic views and fun. We then moved inside for the dancehall. They usually have a good live band, and very good food. They staff is down home fun and friendly. This is just a great small town Texas dancehall. Everyone is friendly, and reminds me what Texas really is about. Go here, have some fun. This is a typical Texas restaurant/dance hall. You don't come expecting haute cuisine. It is a fun place, but the waitressing service was horrible. It took forever to get a beer. The food came all at once so there wasn't any time to enjoy it while waiting. I noticed people getting their own condiments, drinks, etc. The food was ok, once it got to us. The fried shrimp was obviously something prefab frozen. Not a lot of flavor and the cocktail sauce did not have horseradish in it. The dinner salads were just wilted romaine with whitish-pink tomatoes. Blaah. The burgers looked pretty good and my family said they were tasty. The waitress we had was kind of surly and very absent and slow. There was a petite lady with a bun who was a very kind waitress who helped us out. Bottom line- if you're charging $10 entries fees each for a "steakhouse," then there should be service. If you want people to treat it like a snack bar, then post some information. The band was good and the dancing was fun. My tip- don't eat dinner here and go for the dancing. Fetch your own drinks, or you will die of thirst. read more

My wife and I decided to get out of town with a visit to the Cotton Club and Steakhouse for a Johnny Bush Show. We got there about 7:30 for a 9pm show. The house band, The Hardly Playboyz, were playing. Our table I had reserved was waiting on us as was a waitress named Meredith who was very good all night. we noticed right away how clean the place was and how friendly everyone that worked there was. The lead singer of the house band was a guy named Bubba Cox. What a voice he had. I would have paid to listen to him all night. He also came around during breaks and during Johhnny Bush's show to thank people for coming out.The dance floor was the best we have danced on in a long time. All tables have a great view of the stage and the sound was very good. We ordered chips and queso as well as a fried shrimp basket. Both were very good. We plan to go back as soon as we can but it will be hard to do with college football season just around the corner. We have to be at Kyle Field for our Aggies on Saturday home games. Gig 'em!!! Oh yeah...JHohnny Bush was very good. No sign of voice poblems he has been fighting over the last few years. read more

Tried to come for dinner on Sunday at 530. We drove twenty miles because of the reviews on the food. Extremely disappointed to learn at the door in order to eat dinner you have to pay a $10 entry fee per person!! It would be different if we were not going to buy dinner but holy cow $50 just to get in for the five of us and then food would roughly cost $60 for a total of $110. No good. Other places in the big city I have been only charge entry for non dining guests. Will not try to go back after this waste of a drive! read more
