Great servers! Good menu. Ate here 3 times in past 10 days. Check out the Wednesday 2 for $40 menu, you won't be disappointed.

We were here just two days ago on a Thursday night. We were really impressed by all the selection on the menu as well as all the drinks and options there were - including some really cool non-alcoholic "mocktails". First off, the service was EXTREMELY slow. We were greeted and seated promptly and our beverage order was taken right away and those came out promptly and our food order was then taken. And then the stafff disappeared. All four of us finished our sodas *and* a glass of water. We weren't chugging them. We were engaged in conversation and just enjoying ourselves, but we managed to drink that much. I had to go flag down our waitress for refills. The food took more than 30 mins to come out. The waitress was very nice, but she didn't check on us while the food was cooking (disappeared that whole time), didn't check on us again after first bites, and we had to flag her down again for the tab. They looked pretty well staffed for the front of the house. I counted 3 waitresses and 2 bussers for what looked like about a dozen tables with people at them. Not sure what the deal was. The food was fantastic though as were the non-alcoholic specialty drinks. Maybe they just need more kitchen help? And make sure the wait staff keeps up checking on the patrons, especially with such a long wait. An apology would have been nice as well for the delay. read more

Fantastic lunch spot on a Friday. Cheryl was our server and she took fantastic care of us. My husband had a Castle Danger Sea Salt & Lime beer while I had a Duluth Raspberry Cider. I had a bowl of wild rice soup, and wow, it was so good. The cornbread alongside was sweet and delicious, and I treated it like my dessert! My husband had the Boundary Walleye plate, which featured one massive piece of beautifully breaded fish. On the side he had broccoli, a roll, and he picked waffle fries for his potato. This was a good place to stop for an early dinner after visiting Split Rock Lighthouse and Gooseberry Falls. It wasn't very busy when we arrived but started hopping around 5:30ish on a Saturday night. We were immediately seated in the bar area and our friendly server arrived shortly thereafter. I decided to try their featured summer cocktail, Huckleberry Lemon Spritzer. It was very good and refreshing! For our dinner, we decided to split the 1/2 roasted chicken and 1/2 rack of ribs. The platter came with mashed potatoes, beans and sweet cornbread. The chicken was tender and flavorful, the ribs were flavorful but not real meaty. The beans and potatoes were average, the cornbread was on the sweet side, very fluffy and moist. We also added a side salad, which tasted fresh. Since we were in the bar area, there were TVs and happy, pop tunes playing in the background. We enjoyed it! read more

I think this is the best of their bunch! Their menu is vast and several items really stand out. The blueberry cole slaw and homemade corn bread are not to be missed. We love the coziness of the bar and friendly hometown vibe. read more

We were just there today. Both of us ordered salmon. It was extremely expensive at $30. The first set of them came out completely raw. When we asked for them to be made, they came out completely destroyed and overcooked. I'm very disappointed, I said that to the waitress but didn't even get a visit from a manager or cook. This was such a great stop on a warm night! We sat outside on the porch and it was lovely. Our service was great. We had a fun night. I had the bourbon steak tips. The crispy onions on top were the star! My only complaint would be that I requested the potatoes be changed for another side. The server reported that they were unable to change the sides. My husband and I arrived at 2:00 pm on a Monday. We were advised that seating was available outdoors and would be less wait than indoors, although we could see many booths and tables available inside. After our initial drink order was served, we ordered appetizers and entrees. A couple seated near us waited 20 minutes after being seated and given menus and no one took their order. They left. At 3:00, our appetizers and requested water had not arrived, nor had wait staff stopped by our table again......... we put a $20 in the table and we left. We won't stop there again. read more

We tried the Creamy Chicken & Wild Rice Soup and the Rueben. The both tasted great, but the soup was not hot enough. Our waitress was very busy, but the other waitresses seemed available to assist. Not sure if there was a territorial battle for tips, but... The Rueben tasted great (as advertised), but it took quite a while to come out. Black Woods was a decent place. Someone got the Reuben. It looked tasty and she said it was. My friend got spicy burger. The patty was thick with quality meat. My friend always gets this here. This time she said her bottom bun was soggy. A hot freshly made burger should not have enough time to get soggy on the bottom unless it was sitting while other meals were being prepared. I had the French dip. The roll was fresh, soft, and easy to dip and eat. It was good but I felt it needed a little salt. The au jus didn't have much flavor. It should be rich in flavor to bring this dish all together and they just missed the mark. We also had cheese curds. Doesn't sound good to me but they sure tasted great. I had never had them. I can't believe I have been missing out on this. They were the highlight of the menu. They were super crispy with gooey cheese inside. The curds had fantastic seasoning with a great crunch on the outside. One of my friends eats here all the time and it's her favorite restaurant. Maybe I was just there on an off day.. Stopped here on the way home from Grand Marais for lunch. We sat on the patio to enjoy the amazing weather. I ordered the patty melt with loaded stuff tots. Both were excellent! The patty melt had a nice thick burger with a good amount of grilled onions. The bread was slightly toasted and so good. The tots were SO good. They are really big and stuffed with all the goodness served with a side of season sour cream. The patio was nice but the fly situation was not. Our server was attentive and kind. First Blackwoods I'd been to. Moved to Duluth a few years back, recently took a solo day trip up the shore and ended up here for lunch. Service was fast and efficient. Hosts and servers were friendly and welcoming. I came in on a busier afternoon, which was okay because every worker I encountered kept up with the quick pace and hustle of the restaurant wonderfully. We popped in for a late dinner. Service was amazing. Castle Danger (local, 5 blocks away) cream ale is my new favorite beer, and I live in Hendersonville NC with like 50 local breweries in my town and Asheville. The fish was wonderful. The cabbage salad was barely dressed, which was refreshing. The garlic butter was really good as was the cornbread. The roll was food service grade. The meatloaf was delicious and plenty. Here's my shortest review so far. I found Blackwoods to be overrated, expensive and disappointing. The wait while tables were available and the view of cars on 61 just 20 feet from your window... also not impressive. The lobster mac and cheese, just skip that expensive blah. The fish fry that caught my attention on the menu, it's seasonal and not available by October so I tried the Reuben and have to say that was the only bright spot for our table. It was good and without it I would have given only 1 star. The patio looks nice if its warm out and its open and you don't mind the sound of traffic. Maybe just calk in and order the Reuben to go and enjoy a stop somewhere along the North Shore. read more

Consistently disappointing is probably the best way to describe Blackwoods. we try this location again just about every year in hopes that things have improved, they have not based on our recent visit. Nachos were almost laughable as were the cheese curds (imagine chunks of Velveeta and you pretty much have their offering here). The tap beer was even flat. There are better alternatives in Two Harbors and the neighboring vicinity. read more

Hostess was extremely irritable and rude to our group on a Friday night. Our group of 7 came and waiting our 45 minutes for a table then the host whispered our name, even though we had been standing across from her stand the entire time she skipped us and moved down the list. If you are a local maybe this place serves you well but visitors beware, the staff is not welcoming. read more

I wanted to like this place more. First time here. We put our name on the outdoor seating list, then sat at the bar to have a beer. The Castle Danger Cream Ale was old and really cold. The bar tender was pretty busy. We waited about 5 minutes before we were addressed. No problem. We waited maybe 15 minutes for an outdoor table. Quite acceptable. Autem was our server. She was very nice. Food came in a reasonable amount of time and food terms were spot on. My cons: - 2 of us asked for water when the food came out. I was done with my sandwich when the water came out. Not a huge deal but slower than it should have been - Wild Rice Chicken Soup was awful. No taste and the worst Wild Rice soup I've ever had. Skip this. Autem kindly removed the soup from the check. I'd come back but I might read more reviews before hand. read more

We stopped by here for lunch on our way to our weekend cabin -- at first glance they seemed busy as there was a 15-20 minute wait. We eventually were seated inside and I noticed only two-three tables were being used so I definitely think they were short staffed. Our server, Dee was probably our favorite part of this whole experience -- she was really friendly. Our food came quickly, but I was super underwhelmed. I wasn't expecting one big piece of fish for a fish fry basket, but no biggie. My issue was the fish was greasy and extremely bland. The fries were good so I mostly ate those. Where do I start? My sweetheart tells me I must have walleye while I'm up here in the Land of 10000 Lakes. So I come Blackwoods. Now I'm trying to eat healthy; cutting out unnecessary carbs. So I ask to sub a side salad for the potato. "That'll be an upcharge" How about if we swap out any other vegetable? "That'll be an upcharge" Really OK. So I ordered the salad with the "seasonal vegetables" which is green beans with craisans. I'm not kidding. Oh well so much for cutting out sugar and carbs. I mean at least the tea was unsweetened. And when rhe fish comes, my despair grew. The walleye that was supposed to be "dredged in special seasoning." Like, you know, ala blackened seasoning. Or so I thought. No "special seasoning" means coated in cornmeal. No seasoning just that. Then deep fried, I'm guessing. Finally, I get my bill. I got upcharged the full salad price as if I was adding a salad to my meal. But I didn't get a potato, so where's the downrange for that? Nah, that ain't happening. I'll fix that. And I did. A great way to cap a drive along the Superior shoreline! Cozy atmosphere inside, and the food and service was excellent. My reuben was perfect, as were the Wisconsin cheese tots. The cream ale from Castle Danger capped off a great lunch. Not sure when or if I'll be back in the area, but if so, a stop at the BW B&G will be on my agenda. read more

We got takeout from here because higher-rated restaurants were closed, and are so glad we did! Wow! Ordered the North Dakota Bison Burger, and it was the best bison burger I've ever eaten. Perfectly done. Real cheddar cheese. Very good bun. Went with the Blueberry Basil Slaw as a side. So good! A distinctive and original combination of flavors that suited the burger perfectly. My sweetheart got the BBQ Baby Back Ribs, and his meal was terrific too. PSA: the cornbread is SWEET. As in dessert-sweet. He ended up saving it and we split it with our breakfast the next morning, as the sweetness was a bit much for him as part of dinner. The contactless pickup went very smoothly, so if anyone in your group has to take extra precautions about COVID, this is a great option. read more

We just finished a 2 hour hike in the snow and needed a drink. We each ordered a Spicy Bloody Mary with a beer chaser to start. We loved the flavor and the mild burn of the mix. We split the Tia chili chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries. They were nice enough to split it up on two plates. The sweet potato fries came with a nice dipping sauce that had a good flavor. We sat at the bar and had great interaction with the bartender. She was very busy but was very attentive to us.
