Why is it called grandma's? This place looks more like a Red Robin. I was really excited to hear they have raspberry lemonade, but it may as well have been water, raspberry syrup, and a lemon. Whatever. I'm willing to forgive. My sister and I split the bacon mac n cheese. I don't really like bacon, but I just really wanted mac n cheese. I won't give my opinion on it, because I don't like bacon, so I'm a biased source. They did give us an extra breadstick. How nice. A friend who used to live in MN suggested we eat at Grandma's while visiting Duluth. It has a fun atmosphere with lots of old posters and signs hanging on all the walls. Our waitress was attentive to our needs. The Reuben sandwich was very good, the meat tender and tasty. I do wish they would add more sauerkraut, though. The fries are lightly battered and flavorful. The spaghetti and meatballs were good, but not in a meat sauce, as described in the menu. I tried the Duluth made Blackberry Basil seltzer and found it to be quite flavorful. For being at Grandma's on a Tuesday at 3:30 in the afternoon we still waited for 30 minutes to be seated. Our server got to us right away and took our order. I go there for one reason so I knew what I wanted. The Steak Cheese French Sandwich. Unfortunately because of the time of day (I think) were understaffed. There wasn't an option for the Ice Cream Boxcar. Horrible experience. The staff was somewhat rude when we asked for a knife and fork because the coney dog left the bun sopping wet and the chili was almost flavorless. The area was great, we love canal park. Grandma's was such a good find. We had a large group of 12 that they were able to seat in about 20 minutes which was great. Service was also super great, especially for such a large group. A large food and beer menu, it was difficult to choose. I had the chicken and wild rice soup, which 10/10 would recommend. I also had the chicken pot pie, which was also so great. After dinner we went to the upstairs bar and they have such a cute patio where you can view the bridge go up and down. read more

We were in town to see a show, and a friend recommended this place. I was not excited after checking the Yelp page, but honestly, I enjoyed it! I got to try the dill pickle cheese curds, which were not bad, but really different than I expected. I had it with their house-made Ranch, which I always love to see. My entree was the chicken pot pie. It was savory and salty and really yum. Service was fine and normal, and I got the impression from the "vibes" that this is something of a tourist-y place and apparently, they can get pretty busy during peak times. So this place was not good. The Caesar salad was basically just lettuce and Parmesan. The breadsticks were ice cold and had no flavor. The steak was uncooked and the sauce was awful. The bacon cheeseburger was slimy and soggy. The drink tasted like chlorine and they didn't get them right. The chicken was greasy and made us sick. The ranch didn't taste like ranch it tasted like lime. The pickles tasted sour and not made right. The only good thing that we had ate were the fries but even those were pretty greasy. Grandmas saloon is very well-known. The food was quite underwhelming. We had the steak and shroom bites as an appetizer, and the steak was nicely cooked but over all the dish was so salty. After we stopped eating it I still couldn't get the saltiness out of my mouth. I had the cranberry turkey club with fries and a side salad. It was okay, definitely something you could just make at home. My bf had the French steak sandwich and there was so much cheese on it! Way too much cheese. The long islands, and bloody Mary's were INCREDIBLE! Our server was super cool too! He was very into his job and seemed to be playing a character to a point. The ambiance was also great! Seems the quality of the food and the selection of Italian food is not the same as it used to be considering the prices. My wife had the grilled chicken dinner and the taste was bland. The fish and chips was good, just not great. It seems Grandmas is just about the name these days. I would highly recommend a fresh water fish offered here: the walleye sandwich (battered/breaded and deep fried). I think that it's Canadian-raised. Our server, Genah seems nice. She is on top of things but not in the way of eating. Our food was the Roast beef at jux, called the Godfather and I had the bacon cheeseburger. The fries are top notch, there was no complaints about my burger or the sandwich. It's a lot of Americana on the walls like old Coca Cola signs and neon signs and things like that. Grandma's Saloon & Grill from what I understand is one of those local area staples. Generations of people in the Canal Park Area of either dined or worked at this establishment. And I'm sure there's some good stories to be told about this place, as you can tell it's been around for a very long time its unique decor on the inside. You can spend hours looking at everything on the walls and still find something new tucked away somewhere. The service was great. My server whose name i forgot was very helpful and attentive. And every now and then you could catch him chatting it up with his other tables and genuinely seemed like he was happy to be there. So atmosphere was amazing. The food is where they lost it for me. The Dill cheese curd bites were absolutely amazing, but the burger i got was far from tasty. The beef was very low quality in taste and texture. More seasoning wouldn't hurt and the fries were all very hard. Points for how fast the food came out, but those same points are lost because they probably could have slowed down to make a more quality product. I was with a group of 5 and nobody at the table was all too crazy about what they ordered either. Don't let this review keep you from visiting though. If i am ever in the area again, im not opposed to coming here especially because they can accommodate larger parties. read more
