I Honeslty have NO idea why people like this place. I will say our server was top notch though! He was on top of everything without being an annoying hawk. Walking in my son was like this has a great vibe, it's going to be so good! Walking out he said... well we got tricked. We ordered raw oysters, they were super gritty I had to pick sand and stuff out of my mouth, I gave up after the second one. Clam chowder was like white water with seasoning on top. It had zero flavor and was so watery. Luckily our server had just brought us a sample so we didn't lost any money, just said no thank you, but thank you for the sample. Dinner we had kids chicken which was a thin tender that was over fried so more like rubber. The kids shrimp was alright, I would for sure do that over the kids chicken, but they didn't get finished either. The hush puppies were also over fried, I was so excited to try them but the outside and most of the inside was just pure grease fry and just a tiny spot in the middle was still breading, I've literally never seen a hush puppy like it. I was so sad lol. I had a side of blackened shrimp that had good flavor but the shrimp were over cooked and again sort of rubbery. My son had the shrimp poboy, there was no sauce on it, sandwich was so dry he ended up picking off the shrimp and eating them alone. He did not care for the bread they used either which surprised me because he is a carbaholic with a bread obsession. I should have looked at photos before ordering the onion rings. I'm sure some people love the thick cut so it's a total preference thing but the for us no one cared for them. It was cool to see them we were all like whoah! But after 1-2 bites each we were all like meh. The onion slices inside was like eating an apple, they were so thick and now possibly under fried so was like eating a breaded raw onion. After tip I think we spent $140 and I was just disgusted. We've been to the island maybe 6 times and this was by far the worst meal we've had. I was so sad we "wasted" a meal on our trip, there are so many places to eat here. Seated quickly in a booth, waiter was prompt and pointed out the specials, hubby got the burger with onion rings for two dollars more, I opted for the steak and crab legs, I opted for the salad and fries for the side. Eating crab legs is like fighting with your food but that's just part of it. It comes with a small fork and nut cracker to help obtain the meat. Steak was cooked medium rare as I ordered it. What a great meal! We came for their daily special. Today was the chicken fried chicken. It was delicious! It had very generous portions of perfectly cooked chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans that were seasoned to perfection and a piece of Texas toast. The restaurant was very inviting and the waitress was extremely friendly and attentive. They had a really large area outside to eat if it was a beautiful day which also had a bar area. Here in South Padre Island my mom and I stopped in Blackbeard's for lunch. At first I was nervous since I am deathly allergic to shellfish. Our really good waiter assured me that it was safe to eat here. They cook everything in sections like fish in one section, steak in another, etc. I had the most delicious chicken fried chicken ever, the coleslaw was creamy and crunchy, and the onion rings are top notch! We've been coming to South Padre for years, and every time we visit, someone suggests we go to Blackbeards. I finally decided to leave a review because, truthfully, it's never been a place I actually enjoy--but it always feels like one of the few dining options on the island. The wait is for big parties is often long, which I'd be more understanding about if the service made up for it. Unfortunately, it doesn't. This last visit especially, our server was dismissive and came off as downright rude. It felt like we were an inconvenience the moment we sat down. The drinks are usually the highlight, but even that's hit or miss. If you order anything fruity--like the mango margarita--expect more smoothie than cocktail. Tasty, sure, but not what I came for. Food-wise, it's average at best. I'm from San Antonio, and honestly, I can get better seafood back home at a lower price. Meals run about $20 a person, which wouldn't be bad if the food and experience felt worth it. Overall, Blackbeards is more of a tradition than a treat. After a beach photo shoot we headed over to Blackbeard's for drinks and a late dinner. Wait was less than thirty minutes on a Friday night in May. Ample parking at that time. We ordered drinks at outside bar that were tart top shelf margs and cold beer. We had a spacious table and Jose as our server. He was awesome! Great recommendations. Very friendly. Checked on us often. Ww started with chips salsa guacamole and queso. All nice and fresh We ordered crab cakes, Atlantic salmon and Buffalo chicken sandwich. We all enjoyed our meals thoroughly. Meals came with sides. We enjoyed the grilled zucchini. Side salad was a little plain but good. The dinner rolls that came with meals was really tasty. Oh and the lemons blueberry cheesecake. Came with the family for a quick Labor Day trip to the Island and am glad we came across Blackbeards. They have some cool fishing memorabilia scattered throughout the inside and truly give you the SPI vibes. We arrived around 6 pm and were seated quickly by the hostess. The staff here is very kind and our waitress gave us a good rundown of the menu. Unfortunately, we couldn't take advantage of any dinner specials, so be sure to come on a weekday if you're interested in trying those out. We ended up getting the Blackbeard's Seafood Platter Supreme with Mahi Mahi and the fried oyster platter. The meals here come loaded with a good amount of food and most entrees do come with your choice of two sides. The Blackbeard's Seafood Platter Supreme tasted excellent. The Mahi Mahi was juicy and well-seasoned. We had the gulf shrimp broiled and they were flavorful as well. For the sides, we chose the dinner salad and steak fries. Unfortunately, the steak fries were bland and doughy. I would recommend avoiding the steak fries and choosing another side. The fried oyster platter came loaded with about 10-12 pieces and the oysters tasted very fresh! It also came with a large fried onion, which is a great bonus. The grilled zucchini as a side had a good smokey flavor, but they only gave us 2 pieces. Overall, Blackbeards is a good value for being on the Island and the seafood here tastes fresh. However, a fair amount of shrimp on the special, probably more than most people can eat.. 16 shrimp, with choice of two sides. This year, I opted for the charbroiled flounder which was excellent. Nicely prepared with an excellent spice blend and had four filets. Of course, shared a fabulous appetizer of Mexican Shrimp Cocktail.. another must have for the family. Our only disappointment was the shrimp was lukewarm, probably under heat lights and not fresh out of the fryer.
