I'm very familiar with this property, I lived in the condominiums upstairs for over a decade. I've seen and experienced all of its former iterations. From "Jack Quinn's," to "Brick Anchor," to now, "Black Eye Peas." It's great to see the current iteration. Ambiance: literal carryover from "Brick Anchor," which isn't a problem. Facets of the "Steampunk" decor are still evident. Again, not an issue. I went for lunch on a Tuesday, it's closed on Mondays. I had the Fish & French Fries. The food, great. Fish seasoned wonderfully, seemingly cooked to order, as were the crinkle-cut French Fries. My only food complaint was that the cornbread was served on a plastic plate. Don't know what that was about. Again, no food complaints, just an issue with cornbread presentation. Staff training, operational consistency, and over all "systems" management would serve this business well. Over all, I do recommend this restaurant. With time, greater oversight and management, I hope it meets its potential. read more

My server was amazing, and the atmosphere was welcoming enough; however after my friend sent back her oxtails things got weird. The owner was very rude and unprofessional, she said things along the lines of, "people don't send back food" and "you get what you get". The owner, Cynthia T., made things awkward with her unnecessary comment, and as a business owner she should know how to take constructive criticism and that not everybody is going to like her food. She's not perfect, and no one was pointing fingers or being aggressive/ disrespectful about the oxtails being nasty, but she took it to heart and blew everything out of proportion. I don't recommend coming here, the food isn't all that and is overpriced compared to it's quality and taste. A co-workers and I went for lunch. It is in a great location for anyone in downtown Norfolk. We were probably the first lunch customers there. We were greeted warmly. I ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich (lunch special) with fries. I was impressed with the size of the chicken breast. It overflowed the bun in every direction. I was less impressed with the temperature with the buffalo sandwich. The website stated it had hot buffalo sauce. It was just very mild. The service brought this up to a four star review. I will probably go back to try another dish during lunch. read more

Hubby and I decided to jump in the car and drive to Norfolk, VA...don't ask me why I picked Norfolk, VA...I kinda closed my eyes and...just kidding . I wanted to pick a place that we had never been before. It's day two and so far we've had a good time. For dinner we decided to visit Blackeyed Peas near the river front for dinner. It's a soul food restaurant and the menu looks...DELICIOUS!!! The restaurant is festively decorated...it kind of has a New Orleans vibe. There are three floors, and the first floor has a bar, windows and high top table seating. The second and third floors seat larger party's and the third floor is for parties and events. So hubby ordered jerk chicken, collard greens and sweet potatoes. I ordered the salmon, collard greens, sweet potatoes and of course the black eyed peas (because you can't go to a restaurant named Blackeyed Peas and not try the black eyed peas right???) ‍ They were a little behind in the kitchen but I was very appreciative of our server who kept us informed and up to date. Our food finally came out and it was piping hot!! It looks delicious and tastes scrumptious!!! It's seasoned well and you get great portions!! This is easily two meals for me!! My only critique would be to add some smoked paprika to the potato salad but other than that...don't change a thing!! If I'm ever in Norfolk again...I will definitely be back! Welp after me and my coworker went there during restaurant week for the lunch special and the chicken had still feathers on it. I was very disappointed. That was some months ago an old coworker of mine who hadn't checked the spot out wanted to be a judge for herself, but asked me to lunch why you ask apparently she don't know me very well but I tagged Long anyway hoping I would not be disappointed we ended up wanting to eat outside of a friend of ours restaurant so we ordered our food to go this time. I went onto the dinner menu side, hoping that it would be a little bit different. They would have to take their time I ordered the jerk chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, and I opted for cabbage because in my book if you mess up cabbage, you really shouldn't be a cook the young lady and the staff as always are always super nice. It's the food. I have a problem with some of my coworkers knew I was going and had heard rave reviews about their desserts so One asked for a strawberry cake when I asked for a chocolate cake and then somebody asked could they have the peach cobbler this time they actually had it so we go back to eat our food. My other two coworkers met us there we're sitting outside. They're eating their pizza. Their sandwiches and me and my girlfriend are eating our Black Eyed Peas food when the young lady brought it out to me my dinner from the counter and she opened the box and I looked at the cabbage with one giant quarter inch sliced carrot and cabbage. There was void of any type of seasoning not even pepper. I have never in my life seen clear, white cabbage unless it was in soup of some sort she noticed my face asked what was wrong. I asked her could I swap out the cabbage for the collard greens again if you don't know how to cook collard greens you shouldn't cook collard greens she asked me why I told her it looks bland. Oh boy was outright cause she left the cabbage in the container and brought me another container of greens so would it me and my friends do we played Russian roulette for lunch with my lunch? Everyone took a taste. Don't get me wrong. The jerk chicken spicy just like I like it great move over to the mashed potatoes and gravy. It was OK. Let's leave it at that then we moved over to the pale looking cabbage, stabbed by fork. Got two pieces, tasted it exactly what I thought no flavor no seasoning no nothing so my other girlfriend said well let's try the greens. We pop up the greens that had a little bit of flavor tank of vinegar. That's about it as always their corn rib, honey cornbread always on point so I close my container and said I'll just save this for later. Take it home judge it up something we move over to the desserts. We started with this strawberry cake. That is the driest strawberry cake I've ever had in my life. I don't know if it was a day old I don't know. It looked great under the plastic don't get me wrong. Then we moved over to the chocolate cake, moist perfect chocolate chocolatey icing straight out of the Duncan Hines can loved it then we all took a spoon and we decided to try the peach cup when we opened it we kind of stared at it for a second because it looked kind of like bread pudding with peaches so we all took it in and Bow her head and set a prayer and one of my girlfriend said please Lord let this head flavor we giggled we all took a bite. I think all of us had the same thought in our head. This taste like the consistency of bread pudding when I think peach cobbler, I think of crust flaky, buttery seasoned crust, not a banana pudding consistency, and that's what it tasted like banana pudding with peaches I will not be going back to Black Eyed Peas ever again I gave it a second try if I had to go back just to talk to the staff. After hearing about Blackeyed Peas on Facebook, I finally had an opportunity ti try it out. The restaurant is beautiful. The artwork really created a warm and inviting atmosphere. The service was good. My only concern is that the manager should ensure that the waitresses are covered apprpriately. By this being a black owned establishment, you have to really pay attention to every detail. Now for the food. I had the catfish. It was very well seasoned, not too salty. It was fried to perfection; crunchy yet still moist inside. The greens were also good as were the okra. I like my okra fried a little more, but not everyone does. I would recommend trying out Blackeyed Peas. Hopefully the wardrobe issue was a one-off. read more

This is the New and improved blackeyed peas in Norfolk, they moved from Virginia Beach. This was my first trip there to the new location and to be honest the food was still good the portions were huge... but I had a few takeaways - so let's get into it ... my first and biggest issue was parking - it was terrible we drove around for a good 10 mins in circles until we found some open spots near the college down the street it was Sunday so the college was closed. Walked up the street about a block, wasn't a bad walk. Upon arrival issue number 2 there were stairs going up and a door to the right - my friend went straight up the stairs however it was the door to the right - make it plain, put a clear sign up so you know which door to choose - the host saw us going up the stairs and rescued us before we made it to the top. My observations - the place is really cute inside, the decor was really nice - but it was smaller, a lot smaller than VB. We ended up getting a table pretty quickly but needed a lower table and they were able to accommodate us after about 20 mins. The food came out the kitchen relatively quick - we got lost in the conversation so it didn't seem like it was long at all. The food is really good but for me needed a little more salt. But don't get it twisted I enjoyed it. All and all would I go back probably but more than likely I would call a car. We ended up sitting there for hours as they transition from lunch to dinner and the waitress kept coming to check on us... the staff were great, like really great.. the decor is nice and the location is in the middle of everything.... We were served hot cornbread or should I say corn cake / delicious- then my niece ordered the nachos fully loaded -we sent it back after eating about 1/4 of it we had not found any meat... but the food came out so quickly we said cancel it and they did but they remade it and sent it back out. The second one was fire it was delicious perfect! O ordered the pork chops wow two huge pork chops I ate one and took the other home - everyone smashed their food except the collard greens my friend ordered them she said they were good but too salty. My friend and I came here for dinner on Juneteenth before going over to the concert on waterside. We were greater as we came in and asked to sit at the bar since the sign outside said happy hour was bar only. The bartender quickly provided us menus to look over. The food menu was big with plenty of yummy options. The drink menu was small with a select number of options which still wasn't bad. After we placed our orders the bartender made our drinks. It was not packed but there were several tables filled. The wait for our food wasn't too long. We were given pieces of cornbread while we waited for our food. The cornbread was sweet with a glaze on top. I wanted to save mine to eat with my collards. My friend ordered the sausage, peppers and onions that came with rice. She got cabbage & greens as her sides. I got the fried pork chops with mac n cheese and greens. I also got 3 of the happy hour wingettes. The food was great!! Everything was seasoned well. The pork chops were thick but not dry. They give you plastic cutlery. I was surprised I could cut the thick pork chops with the plastic knife, but it worked. The mac n cheese was very good too. It can be hard to find good restaurant mac n cheese. The collards were good, I would have preferred a bigger bowl of them lol. The decor inside gives you an old saloon vibe. We went to this restaurant with a group of three people, and unfortunately, our experience was extremely disappointing. When we arrived, there were only about eight people in the restaurant. We placed our order and waited. We were brought cornbread, two waters, and one well drink, but after that, no one checked on us or asked if we needed anything--not even when our drinks were empty. We asked about our food several times and were repeatedly told that it would be coming out shortly. After waiting for over an hour, someone finally came back and told us that our order had never even been entered into the kitchen. We were then asked, essentially, what we wanted to do now. While they did apologize, there was absolutely no attempt to make any consideration for the significant inconvenience. By this point, there were more than 30 people in the restaurant, and it was obvious that other guests were receiving their food and being attended to. It is hard to understand how no one noticed that 3 people had been sitting there for over an hour without receiving their meal. What made the situation even more frustrating was that we watched the staff be attentive to other guests while we were essentially forgotten. We were never rude or disrespectful. In fact, we still paid for our drink and even left a tip. Mistakes happen. Orders can be missed. We understand that. What was most disappointing was the lack of urgency, communication, and consideration after the mistake was discovered. We had waited over an hour, had no food, and were simply told, "What do you want to do now?" as if it were no big deal. A simple effort to make the situation right--a sincere attempt to accommodate us, offer something for the inconvenience, or even demonstrate that they understood how frustrating the situation was--would have made a big difference. My party of 12 people scheduled a wedding anniversary dinner this past Saturday to celebrate with my family and when we arrived 10 minutes before our reservation everyone acted as if we never scheduled anything. The issue here on top of not being able to get seated for our scheduled reservation is how we were treated by the staff. The staff was not trying to accommodate or help us out and they once said that they would go get the owner but the owner never came out to talk to us. We understand that mishaps happen but the lack of accountability and professionalism is what was EXTREMELY disappointing because I was the one to sell the idea of going to this restaurant with my family and now I can't ever recommend this place ever again. Good evening, I am writing to express my disappointment with the service I received at Black Eyed Peas on Granby Street. I booked a party for 25 guests two weeks in advance and was specifically told that my group would have the balcony area. However, upon arrival, there was already another party occupying that space, and my guests were placed in a small corner area where we were crowded together and uncomfortable. In addition, the area was extremely hot, which made the experience even more unpleasant. Our server, Samiya, was rude and unprofessional throughout the evening, which further impacted our experience. To make matters worse, our party arrived at approximately 6:30 PM, and we did not receive our food until around 8:00 PM. The long wait, combined with the seating issues and poor customer service, was very disappointing. I reserved this event well in advance with the expectation that the arrangements discussed would be honored. Unfortunately, that was not the case. This place is amazing and it's in a new cool spot in downtown Norfolk. I moved here from Mississippi and everything Ms Cynthia has on the menu reminds me of home. I ordered pulled pork and asked if they could make it into a sandwich and of course they did! It was served with a very warm bun and BBQ sauce that attacked my taste buds.
