This is about as good as it gets in Gunnison, and that's saying quite a bit because there are several very nice restaurants here. The wine list is very nice, and you won't break the bank -- especially at happy hour, with two dollars off each glass of wine between 5 and 7 PM. We had the House Malbec, from Mendoza, Argentina, and it had a delicious flavor and aroma. It was a full bodied and smooth, dark red offering. For an appetizer, we had the Shishati grilled peppers with pesto/cilantro sauce, and they were just fantastic. They are mild, nicely grilled, and beautifully presented. It is served as an appetizer, but please be warned, one out of every nine peppers is exceedingly hot. We had about 12 peppers, and all of them were mild, so we beat the odds! I've had hamburgers all over the world, and I can honestly say I have not had a better cheeseburger than I got right here from the menu at Blackstock. It's in a traditional bun, lightly toasted, with tempura, onion, cracked pepper, mayo, Tabasco, candied and smoked bacon, and it is served with Hand-cut fries. You can add guacamole for a dollar, or blue cheese or Gruyere cheese for another dollar. But I did not add a thing; it was perfect as it came out of the kitchen for me! You will be asked how you want your hamburger cooked, and I chose medium. It could not have been better! It's on the menu at a very fair $21 including your hand-cut fries. My lovely dinner-date had the petite filet mignon, a 5-ounce offering of spectacular steak, served with goat cheese, potato croquettes, asparagus, stewed shallots, served with a Cabernet Demi glaze at $45. It was a large serving, I believe bigger than 5 ounces, because we are taking half of it home in a to-go box! Again, the food was spectacular... really good. We will finish with the flourless chocolate torte, serve with whipped cream and Amarina dark cherries at $11. If I was a betting man, I'd say you're gonna love this place! Take a few pictures, do what I did, and leave a review, because more people need to know the quality of food coming out of this little storefront on a busy street in Gunnison! And if you ask for Danielle, be advised, he's a great server and you will get exactly what you need! He's very attentive, and charming. read more

My boyfriend got the schnitzel and I had the salmon dish. The salmon was cooked perfectly but it had a strange taste, but you cant expect perfect seafood in a mountain town. While this restaurant may seem very unassuming from the outside, I promise, when you step inside, you won't be disappointed. One of my favorite features is Ramen Wednesdays. More recently, we sat at the bar last week to enjoy both happy hour, and the ramen menu. The bartender was great, and checked in with us regularly. We started with a small plate of the bistro fries - which comes covered in Truffle Oil, Herbs de Provence, and Parmesan Cheese - they're super good, and would say better than a certain CB restaurant's crack fries. The small order was plenty for the three of us to share. For drinks, we started with wine, beer, and I had a mojito. The mojito wasn't my favorite - for some reason, it was really sweet. Second drink was a glass of Sauvignon blanc, which went well with the ramen. On to the ramen - I went with the Boo-Tan-E-Koo Pork broth, traditional wavy noodles, pork belly, poached egg, tempura, green onion, buttered sweet corn, chile thread, fresh ginger, sesame seeds. It was delicious, flavorful, and I couldn't get through the whole bowl (I took about half of it home). That was my first time taking ramen home, and would note it heated up nicely for lunch the next day. We will absolutely be back to try more of the menu! read more

Stopped here for dinner on our way to Lake City. We usually go to High Alpine brewing but wanted to try a new place! I'm glad we stopped. I got the Hackbraten which was way more elaborate and pretty than I thought it would be. I was expecting a hunk of meatloaf (which I was really craving), but it was a much more refined dish. The goat cheese in the mashed potatoes was a unique touch I hadn't had before. The sauce was really tasty but the meat itself was quite dry. My husband had the French Onion Sandwich and it was tasty, but quite small. The french fries were delicious! Would stop here again for a nicer meal. Good service and ambiance considering his w busy they were. Our tacos and burger tasted good but were served cold.

Food was mediocre (ribs were dry and served with lukewarm soggy french fries - I expect a lot better at this price point), but the bigger issue was the restaurant was dirty. I'm hoping the grains in the wide crevices of this table were old rice and food particles and not droppings, but especially if you have small kids do not let them sit you at this big round table upstairs (see pictures). The crevices are plenty wide enough for little fingers to play with the crud. The salads got good reviews from my dinner companions, but the ribs and meatloaf were both subpar. read more

Overall (A+) This place is awesome. I will be dining here every-time I visit Gunnison/CB. If you have not dined here- get here immediately. Honestly I will have lunch and dinner here. It's one of those places that you want to try everything on the menu. I think I will have to move out here since they rotate the menu. Service (A+) The staff is extremely well trained. They are friendly with all customers, provide great recommendations and the foot comes out fairly fast but is not rushed. This is a highly efficient and effective team. Well done. The waiter politely asked me for drinks (which I don't drink) and knew I was healthy so didn't push dessert on me - since I would not have gotten one. Value (A+) It was around $30 out the door for me with 2 appetizers. Worth every penny. This is a kind of place that you don't mind spending money at.its the reason why we make money. To spend at places like this. If this place was in Chicago there would be a wait for months to get reservations. My boyfriend and I walked in without a reservation on, unbeknownst to us, prom night for the local high school, so we felt exceedingly lucky to nab the last table not booked by well-dressed teenagers and their heavily cologned dates. We started with the French onion soup to share. This was fine. The broth was flavorful enough but lacked the super punch of umami, the toasty crostini, and bubbly browned cheese layer I was envisioning when I ordered. More egregious, though, is that the soup came out borderline cold. It was perfectly edible and we still finished it, but I wouldn't get it again. For mains, I had the grilled salmon and he had the hackbraten. I quite liked mine. The salmon was perhaps a touch overcooked for my personal preference, but still very tasty. The couscous was super unctuous and tasted strongly of bacon, but a bite with some of the asparagus, roasted tomato, or lemon mascarpone brightened things up. I would've liked even a few more dollops of lemon mascarpone throughout so there were fewer bites that were one note without the balance. I love me some bacon but I don't necessarily want that to be the primary flavor in my entrée. My boyfriend's hackbraten was solid, but not exceptional. And when I say solid, I do mean solid as in dense, stodgy, and not particularly dynamic in flavor despite the three different meats in the meatloaf mix. The plating was lovely, the gravy was tasty, and I think the mashed potatoes were good, but I'm not a fan of goat cheese so the one bite I had was enough. All in all, this was a nice date night out in Gunnison and I think there are some good things going on here. I'd rate this 3.5 if I could, but I'll have to settle for 3. Good foundation. Brings a somewhat elevated offering to a small mountain town. Has room for improvement. read more

One of my friends recommended Blackstock Bistro to me while we were strolling through Gunnison, and I am glad he did. A quaint little restaurant on the main strip in the town, Blackstock has a surprisingly sophisticated menu that meets the criteria of a quality gastropub. They have the classics, but also are willing to serve a $200 tomahawk steak. Quite the contrast! I went with something I had never heard before: a French Onion Soup sandwich. This thing was the bomb. Straight out of the soup onto the meat of the bun. This one stood out to me the most on the menu and it did not disappoint. I'm not sure how other restaurants in the area are, but I would believe Blackstock has to be one of the best. Ordered the tuna poke for an appetizer and it was very good. The tuna was fresh (no idea how that happened this far inland) and the combination of guacamole and tuna was something I wouldn't have thought of but was very good. The drinks were not watered down and I recommend the Pendleton Old fashioned. Prices are very responsible and the ambiance is great. Very friendly staff. For dinner we ordered the Hackbraten and the Seared Beef and goat cheese crostini with French onion soup. The entrees had generous portions and d were flavorful. The hackbraten was a bit over done but the French onion soup and crostini were delicious. The service was very attentive. All in all a very pleasant dining experience. Although we don't eat here regularly, but it is our first choice in Gunnison for dinner. It is by far one of our favorite restaurants, with unique offerings, and great service. Go early, as it is a small restaurant and can fill up fast. Our waiter was very good and he checked on us frequently to make sure we were good. I had the tomato bisque which was good. We also share the poke bowl but the poke didn't taste fresh. My main meal was the salmon and that was tasty. The couscous was a little sticky and thick but still added good complementary flavor to the salmon. There should be more than 5 stars for this place! It was shockingly good. My wife is from Paris and we've eaten in some of the best restaurants in France. This rivals anything we have had in Europe. The filet mignon is to die for. The chef is one of the only people we've had in the US that can cook a filet the prober way. Ask for it very rare on the inside and very seared on the outside, it's perfection! The Lamb was spectacular as well. Even the veggies were an eruption of flavor! What a gem we discovered in Gunnison Co located in a very small storefront on Tomichi Ave. This establishment has culinary excellent food, it well exceeded our expectations. The service was personable, professional, quick and friendly. Our meals included the schnitzel which came with an arugula salad (including eatable flowers and German potatoe salad--- simply so tasty. We also had the St Louis Ribs (falling off the bone for sure) , a tangy homemade rub, coleslaw and truffle fries (small upgrade from their standard fries). I testify this meal was excellent. I didn't mention the star, parmigiana roasted broccoli sprouts.. I'll drive back just for this dish... soooo good. Terrible experience. Sat at the bar and bartender told us kitchen was taking a while AFTER ordering our food. Food came out almost 2 hours later. The filet was ordered medium rare and came out medium well. The croquetas came out soggy. The owner said he would refund us half off our meal after complaining (which we RARELY do) - but the charge never came through on our credit card. After calling back a week later - the havent returned our call. Not trying to sound like a Karen here - but don't tell me you're going to make it right then not do what you're gonna say. Word is bond. Essentially, this place just seems like an over-priced, poorly-ran "fanciest place in town". Ended up being a knockoff. Save your money and go somewhere else. read more

The ramen is fine, and I was pleased they were able to make it gluten-free, but it's not what we were looking forward to eating when we booked a reservation weeks in advance. This was a great restaurant to stop in for dinner. We weren't starving so we opted for small plates. We had the shishito peppers, tuna poke and split a burger. The shishito's were good with a touch of sweetness from ginger in the glaze. The poke was really good, fresh tuna way up in the mountains....who knew! The burger (can't recall the name) had a candied Tabasco bacon which was a little to sweet for my wife but I thought it was ok. Cooked perfectly at medium with tons of juice. Was passing through Gunnison several years ago and stopped in to eat at Blackstock. I had the French Onion sandwich and it was great. When I was back in town, I knew where I wanted to eat and what I wanted to have. The sandwhich was delicious again, comes with a great dipping sauce. The bistro fries are really good too. I was on my own and ate at the bar but the atmosphere in the rest of the place seemed relaxed and friendly. Several groups were gathered and seemed to be enjoying themselves. The environment isn't too loud and you could have a good conversation over dinner. Highly recommended read more

This is our go to when we are visiting Gunnison! Food is delicious, atmosphere is great, and the staff is very friendly. Brooke was exceptional the last time we visited a few days ago!
