Wife bought a pair of boots that were on sale from REI. Got home and when she put them on a rivet came out. She really liked them and didn't want to return them. Came here to check on a repair. He was honest and informed me that since they were aluminum it could break when putting in a new rivet. He was able to put in a new one and just like that as good as new. Dropped off a pair of knee length high heel boots to get the heel fixed as I over walked in them causing the nail to peek through. They offered to have them ready for me the next day, but being that I was going out of town they were able to hold my boots for a week. I literally had 10 pairs of shoes that needed either taps, new soles, or refurbishing and based on Yelp reviews we chose to use Blaines. When we came into the store we were quickly greeted by a friendly couple. We started going through our shoes and was told that they could fix, repair, resole and refurbish most of the shoes we had brought in and what I really appreciated was the guys' honestly. If he did not think repairing a shoe was worth it he said as much hence we requested pricing for all the desired repairs and was shockingly thrilled that the total cost was approximately $140. He promised that the shoes would be finished in 4 days and they were ready one time and we ultimately loved their work. I have a couple pairs of boots I now want to take over to have the zippers repaired, we will be consistent customers moving forward. read more

My leather knee-high boots were in bad condition. The rubber heel piece on the bottom of one of them had worn down so much that it fell off, leaving the wooden (?) heel exposed. I stupidly decided to continue wearing the boots, thinking it would be no big deal. Boy was I wrong! After wearing them a few more times, the exposed heel had worn down almost completely! I was left with one boot with a 1.5 inch heel and the other with a tiny .5 inch heel. Yeah, I know. After reading the reviews on Yelp, I decided to go to Blaine's. I grabbed my leather pumps that needed new taps as well. The man who helped me (I'll assume that he's the owner) was very nice. The total was $27.50 -- $20 to build up the heels on the boots and $7.50 for the taps on the pumps. I'd never gone to a shoe repair place before, but this sounded like a good deal to me! Bring cash, as this place takes CASH ONLY. He took my name and number and let me know that they would be ready on Friday (in two days), and to come in any time that day. Two days later, I came in to get my shoes at around noon. Su immediately recognized me and brought out my shoes. They were repaired and beautifully shined! They really looked as good as new. He had even patched up the areas on the heels of my pumps where the leather had been ripped. The only weird thing was when I brought in my mom's heeled sandals. The sole was coming apart from the heel, and I thought they would be a cheap fix. While Su examined the shoes, he seemed hesitant and said he wouldn't really recommend fixing them/it wouldn't be worth it because they were made out of PVC, not leather, and the repair would not last long. He then proceeded to pull the sole up even more, presumably to see how he would fix it. He told me it would cost $18. $18?! For a little glue?! He tried to explain to me that it's a special glue that they use and something about how they would eventually fall apart anyway if you tried to wash it. This confused me. Would they be fine if I didn't wash them? I asked if I could just buy some glue from his shop to do it myself. Again, he was hesitant and said that they use a special machine (clamps, I assume) in order to have the sole stick. "Ok," I say, "I'll just ask my mom what she thinks and I'll come back if she wants to get it done." As I haven't had any previous experience bringing in faux-leather shoes to be fixed, I'm not sure if his response was typical/expected, but because he did make the shoe worse by peeling off the sole even more is the reason I am taking off 1 star. read more

I have a vintage leather coat, great look, very 70's. I am a nut for vintage, quality and price cannot be duplicated... anyhow the great coat had lost one of its front leather buttons and with it its stunning effect. I had gone to Federico's in Monterey who denied helping at all. Mr Lee of Blaine's Shoe Repair ,a former employee of Federico's I think, proposed to remove one button on the sleeve and to put in on the front. It was difficult to do because of the danger of ripping the leather. He did it beautifully and saved my favorite vintage coat. He also resoled all of my husband shoes to adapt to his new lenght of leg due to hip replacement surgery. A great craftsman. read more
