As a dad who has brought his kids here to eat more times than I can count, I can testify that Blazes is a consistently high quality affordable go to for family dinner. I am especially a big fan of the fries. I have no idea if they're hand cut there or what, but they are delicious and crispy every time. I saw some notes about them being short, but who cares? I can't speak for the tots because I'm too attached to the fries to try them out. I know burgers seem like a simple thing, but the owner really nails them every time and the beef is always tasty and the cheese melted just right. I've had wings a few times when they are available and never regretted it. The kids are always happy and never wish we'd gone to McDonalds instead. The new location really raises the experience to a new level. Both because the space is much nicer inside, and also because it's so close now to other downtown spots like the new ice cream shop down the street. read more

The quintessential local burger joint. Fresh, handmade food at prices which are actually sane, not like places in downtown Portland that charge you out the rear. Let's get down to what you came for: the burger. The beef is wonderful, the preparation is phenomenal (seared but you don't taste the char), and the toppings and bun are anything but generic. At 5 bucks, it's an incredible deal for the quality you get. The sides are everything you'd expect to see, fries, tots, onion rings, that jazz. Again, all handmade, all good quality. The fries in particular are delicious bits with just the right crunch and grease. Nothing to complain about with the rest of the experience. I had heard good things about this place, but it appears to have been impacted by the lack of service industry workers like everywhere else. To start, they couldn't serve a beer because there was no one old enough working. A Friday night burger joint with no beer. So disappointing, but was hoping the food would make up for it. Wrong. We waited over 30 minutes for our food (late to our movie because of it) and when we saw the size of the burger, I laughed out loud. We ordered the "small" burgers for my daughter and myself. I was excited that they had a smaller 3 oz option than the typical almost half pound burger that's just a bit much for me. The burger patty itself was less than 2 inches in diameter, smaller than I hockey puck. The bun was full sized and we took about 6 bites of bun before reaching the burger which was gone in two bites. It was such a joke. Won't be returning to this place, needless to say. read more

Such good burgers and fries/tots. I have been here about 4 or 5 times. The owner is the person that has always taken my order and cooked my food. He always comes to check on me to make sure everything is cooked to perfection. I order the same thing every time. The breakfast burger which has a over medium egg, extra cheese and bacon on it. I also order the poutine French fries on the side. These are soooo good! I tried them over tots before but the tots got a little soggy, I would recommended the poutine over French fries. The bun holds together perfect, but you definitely will need extra napkins, because the burger is very juicy and will run down your hands. I have tried the soup here as well (I got it to go) it was very good as well. Stop in if you're in the area, or even if you're in Portland and want to check out a great burger place. read more

Stopped by blazes for an early dinner and was very impressed with the quick, friendly service. I ordered a hamburger and the poutine. I'm pretty picky about my poutine and this was a great one. Crispy fries, curd cheese and a really great gravy. I also really enjoyed the hamburger. Sweet pickles really gave it a kick. Overall I thought this was a great spot, though I imagine parking may be more challenging during a busier Time of day. Most of the tables fit four or two people. The staff was very helpful with the large menu, the owner/chef came out to take to those of us in the dining room. Appreciated they care enough to check in on their guest. We were there 10 minutes after they opened and the restaurant quickly filled up. We had the bacon cheese burger and my husband had the Carolina Gold............OUTSTANDING!!!!!! We each got a different side-fries and tots. The menu is varied and we can't wait to return on our next trip from Florida. I walked in, thinking, "Yeah, another burger joint. Yawn." After devouring a perfectly cooked cheeseburger with some of the best onion rings I've ever had, I have to say I'm hooked on the place. I've been back about 5 times, so the love is real. It's nice to see the faces of local kids working there, and the community support that the restaurant has shown over its short tenure. If you're looking to support businesses that take an active, positive role in the community, and serve excellent (and surprisingly inexpensive!) food, this should be a regular stop. Good food with hefty portions. They have a nice variety of menu items, from burgers to red hot dogs to poutine and more. I requested chili cheese fries which aren't on the menu but they happily obliged. It was a generous helping with enough to take home. My companions ordered red hot dogs and a BBQ burger and everyone was happy. I only wish they had fountain drinks instead of us having to purchase bottles from the cooler--I get thirsty and it would've been nice to have the option of getting refills when dining in. read more

Well, I promised to do it, and do it I have!! We visited Blazes again and it was amazing. We went in on a very busy night when there was a carnival in the park opposite. They get top marks for everything: top service (very quick) and top burgers (cooked to order). We ordered them medium and they were perfect. The lovely buns absolutely do stay together even with burger juice running through the meat. When they are this good, with most toppings (including grilled mushrooms and onions) included for free, I don't see any reason to go anywhere else for burgers. read more
