This store is so dangerous! I can easily wonder aimless for hours in a acrylic paint, shiny paper, pretty sketch books haze purchasing hundreds of dollars worth of fun new toys! This is such a great place for all your art needs! They also have cool gifts and craft like items you would be unable to find elsewhere. I love my Blick reward card and the fact they send me coupons in my email. My mom gets a kick out of me loving this store because Blick was apparently around(in Pittsburgh) back in the early 70's when she was in art school and she loved it then too! This store has it all over the other art stores around here. The size, inventory and pricing is great. I sometimes hope for more knowledgeable staff - though they can usually find what you are looking for and they have all been friendly. My coworker and I called this store multiple times this evening to find out if they have a specific size Chicago screw in stock. We were hung up on once, and told we "just have to come in and ask a cashier". It's 5pm and they close at 8 so it's not like we caught them during closing time. Unhelpful. read more

Its a scam when they have "discount coupons" or ''sale''. They want you to come and buy things but then you dont get the discount as your item was ALREADY discounted. When you go there to buy hoping to get a discount you buy. Not to investigate which one you CAN'T buy with the coupons. Also, at the store its more expensive than online price. They will say that you MAY get a discount after comparing online price and store price while you are checking out at the counter and bla bla. Most of the staff are good and helpful but I wonder why they have very few staff that looks too mean and have unfriendly tone. That ruins the whole experience at the store. I came here with my girlfriend who is an art student. The employees who work here will greet you with a smile and help you with whatever you need. I'm not even an artist but i enjoyed being here the colors and brightness will really make you happy to be there. Whatever type of masterpiece you plan on creating this will be the place to start to find everything you need. Although it is right in the middle of the city things can get expensive but if you're looking for good quality art material this is the place to find it. read more

I have routinely experienced racial profiling by the security guard named Marylin. I'm a a loyal customer and need to be since I'm a graduate art student. When I complained to the manager they did not take action! I finally had to tell the security guard to stop following me to which SHE replied "it is my job to follow you" in other words it's her job to follow any young black man who comes into the store! She was not confronted for her behavior so I had to talk to the district manager. The management team clearly has a fundamental Lack of understanding about what racial profiling actually is because no one on staff including the managers took my concerns seriously. This gone on for years! After the security guard confronted me in the middle of the store And Shouted at the top of her lungs "OH HES BACK" the company has still decided to employe her! This company in general does not care about respecting all customers they only care about respecting the customers that fit the certain hue or complexion that they feel is their target customer. THEY DO NOT care about their black patrons!!!!!! read more

CLOYING... CLOYING... CLOYING... Let me say it again. CLOYING. You walk into this store and the employees shout out "Hi" from behind the cash register. Then some guy working at the framing department says "Hi". And every employee that sees you come in says "Hi". And then the first employee you see when you're shopping asks if he can help you. And then you turn the corner and the next employee asks if he can help you. This act of asking includes the follow-up comment of... "Well, let me know if there's anything you need". And often there is a store sale going on, or a coupon... and you have to listen to them explain that. And then you turn the corner, and it happens again. And as I walk through the store, it's as if there are a dozen employees wandering around just saying "Hi"... "Can I help you"... "Let me know if you need help"... "We have a sale today".... "Would you like a coupon". And then very often an employee who already interacted with you... will forget your face, and it all starts over again. At least fifty percent of my focus while shopping is how to avoid being seen by these people. I feel like I'm in a maze filled with CLOYING zombies, programmed like little packmen to bounce into me with this dull, repetitive rhetoric. It is so utterly corporate and boring that it makes me sick to my stomach. And all these young people working there are supposedly artists or art students, yet they been programmed into customer-service machines. But the funny thing is... when I do actually ask them a question... they NEVER know the answer. I suppose if my question was "Where are the pencils", or "Where are the sketch pads"... that they might actually know the answer. But if you ask them ANYTHING related to the use of an art supply, or which supply you might need for a particular task... they don't know ANYTHING. They just drift around the store like those vacuum-cleaning robots... mindless, smiling faces pretending to help... following the doctrinaire corporate mentality that ASKING if you can help is the same as helping... and that you can never ask too much. And despite their desperate yet phony desire to help... when you want to use the bathroom, you have to walk to ask an employee for the key. The employee has to walk the front register to get the key (half mile away) , and then return. And the really ironic thing is... when you need to use the bathroom... you can never find an employee to help you. Places like this cater directly to the dull, phony, shopping mall, cut-rate mentality of the American public. This accounts for their success in putting Utrecht out of business. I preferred Utrecht. They had less floor space but managed to have everything you need. Blick Dick has four times the floor space and inventory, but manages to somehow NOT have the thing you need. Here is an example of what I mean. I have other examples, and I'm sure others do as well. Here is my latest pet peeve... My favorite sketch pad is the Strathmore 400 series wire-bound, hardcover sketchbook, with cream pages... the kind that is NOT recycled paper. This was a very common sketchbook in various sizes, that was always carried at Utrecht. But BLICK does not carry ANY of these sketchbooks. Instead, they have 50 varieties of Canson sketchbooks, which I think are cheaper in feel and in paper quality. I assume they have some deal with Canson to carry their products, and part of that deal is to NOT carry Strathmore. I suppose it is by such dealings that they get the lower prices to pass on to their customers... which everyone is so happy about. BUT... it is also by such dealings that choices are taken away from the customer. After all, they no longer sell a high quality item that seemed to sell well at Utrecht (from what they told me there). This is typical of big box stores, that they control the market by such cut rate offerings... then put others out of business... and with that we see the disappearance of choices, and the convergence of everything to the consumer level of mediocrity. You would think that such market dominance would allow them to stock their shelves with even the slowest-selling but unusual art materials... things like glass mullers, quality etching presses, real clay chalks, a variety of high quality easels and sculpture stands, or exotic paint boxes and pochades. And so on. But their corporate mentality and inventory control systems are only trying to maximize profit at the expense of .... of everything else. But this is ok... as long as things are cheap... and as long as somebody says "Hi, Can I help you" fifty freakin' times while you're there... even though they are blank-face, patently dull and ignorant art-retards. So yeah... I go here to buy stuff at times... but these realities don't change... and I'd go somewhere else in a second, except that the mind-numbing fallout of the BLICK DICK mushroom cloud has made the earth unfit for art supplies for at least 20,000 years. read more

WOW!!! I'll try and put this into words. It's like artist heaven. The store is underground, and looking at the door I thought it would be small. I was way wrong. The sign outside advertised 30,000 items, and they aren't kidding. I also found out later that Blick is the largest fine art supply store in the city. The store is beautiful. Located under lucky strike, it is brightly lit and extremely well stocked. I was greeted as soon as I hit the bottom of the stairs. (They also have an elevator.) The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. They took me to the sections I needed to be at. I could spend hours getting lost in this store. And the prices are great. I signed up for their discount card and saved 10% off everything that wasn't on sale already. I saved over $50! Now that's what a discount card should do. This is my one stop shop for art materials in this city. read more

Blick is huge and has an amazing assortment of stuff -- yes, even precut mats in odd sizes. Who else has that? And, Blick's staff was head and shoulders above some of those other places. I'm thinking of making 'blick' my new adjective: "How was dessert? The crepe was so blick, I wanted to lick the plate!" read more

If I squint my eyes its very much like Home Depot. I've been used to this for a while seeing that I buy most of my art supplies from Home Depot. This place is probably worse than Home Depot as far as the customer service. That feeling of circling around on your own with no one to help you out. Oh but they do care enough to place a security camera every 10 ft above you. Less care for the buyers and more care for the thiefs. Makes me want to crank call them from the front section just to watch them run to the phone and then hang up. You should try it! read more

I have gotten a number of frames and mats from Blick. Their staff is very helpful - they'll give you advice if you ask for it, but they won't pressure you if you disagree. They have helped me special order mats for unusual sized photos/prints/etc... and everything has always be ready exactly when they said it would. read more

I was dying to go here after getting a copy of their grand-opening flier. Even though they've only been open a few months and I'm only in Philly sporadically right now, I've already been back three times. The most striking thing is how bright the place is. Sure, it's new, but the floor is always gleamingly polished, nothing is dusty, and everything is neatly arranged. It's a pretty big store and they have a LOT of stuff, but it doesn't feel that way because things are so easy to find. Every time I walk in, someone immediately asks if I need help, then leaves me alone if I don't need it. When I _do_ realize I have a question, it's usually easy to find an employee, and they're always incredibly nice and helpful. The first time I went there, one of them opened a bunch of tubes of paint so I could make sure I got the right color, and last time, they fetched different pens and pencils and tried them out for me. If one of them doesn't know the answer, they'll call someone else over or go ask, not just make something up (I'm looking at you, Pearl). Drawn in by all the pretty art supplies and their constant sales, I always leave with more than I planned, but without spending all of my money. read more

Last two times I went here I had pricing problems. The first time I purchased 6 cans of spray paint because it was buy 5 get 1 free. I didn't receive the 6th can free because the cashier didn't even bother getting my store card. I went back and return them all. I only bought 6 cans to get 1 free. I should have paid more attention when at the register. So with that said the second time I came back I had a coupon card sent to me in the mail. It was 20% any item. I shopped around and paid extra attention to the prices listed with the product which helped me decide which items to buy. When I got to the register the cashier started ringing up the items and several items were ringing higher then posted. I bought this to the cashier's attention and they stated that they were in the process of changing prices. Didn't even bother to make a correction. So with that I will never return to this store. I will use the website or even amazon. At least with them I will get the posted price and not get screwed. read more
