This is the second Bloodworks that I've been to in the area. It's a bit older but bigger. There's a sizable reception area and a large donation area too. The far side is the kitchenette with snacks and drinks. The check in process is smooth. It's very important to have the QuickPass already done and save the QR code to the phone. If it isn't, it'll need to be done there using a tablet they provide you. The donation process is standard - a screening first, before the donation. My nurse somehow didn't put in the needle in properly so I had a needle scrap mark on my arm afterwards. I've had nurses leaving a bruise afterwards, but this is the first. This facility didn't have sugar free drinks other than water, tea, coffee. The other facility I've been to has Propel, which I appreciated. For snacks, they have cookies, Doritos, Goldfish crackers, and Lay's chips, same as the other place. read more

Generally, my experience with Bloodworks has mostly been fine. My issue is that when it merged with or absorbed Cascade Regional Blood Center, Tacoma lost its brick and mortar blood center. Now, a person who actually works and cannot accommodate the limited hours of a mobile unit (usually 9 am to 3 pm), can only get in on the weekends AND drive to Federal Way. They wasted my time. I had a shingles vaccine recently and have donated both whole blood and platelets since then. Today they have to decline unless I know the name of the vaccine I was given. So either they don't follow standard proceedings each time, or this tech does not want to bother looking it up. Either way I am done with them and will no longer waist time on them. read more

I was badly injured by a RC phlebotomist today in PA and am missing the professional and mature people at BNW. They know what they're doing, and if a particular person isn't 100% confident on finding and inserting the needle in a smaller vein, they say so and you can wait for one who's more experienced. Biggest mistake I made was giving these "people" my phone number and email address. Once they have that they will constantly harass you to donate. I have registered my number with the national DO NOT CALL registry and even that doesn't deter them from harassment. My next step is to contact the WA AG Office and file a formal complaint. These guys just don't know when to quit. They continually call my house and ask for a certain person that I have told them MULTIPLE TIMES no longer lives here and asked them to not call. each time they say no problem and that they wont call. BUT THEY KEEP CALLING. it's like they can't comprehend or don't understand when I tell them person no longer lives here and just choose to ignore it and continue to harass with calls. Finally gave them a call today wanting to speak to someone in charge and the gentleman I talked to kept refusing to allow me to do so. I told him the problem and that they keep continuing to call regardless that I keep telling them she no longer lives here. I let him know that if they continue to call especially after me giving this call I will be contacting a lawyer. read more

As a regular blood donor it is great to have a location like Blood Works Northwest which maintains a clean and friendly facility. Even during the pandemic I have felt safe donating with their precautions in place. It's easy to make an appointment online and keep all of your appointments in one place. They send reminders for when you are eligible again as well. Give early and often! read more

I've donated at the main office in vancouver WA a few times and staff was always super nice and efficient. no problems with their needle skills and customer service. i would have more experience with this main location but I prefer pop-up locations since I live across the river. wraps are done well. I would recommend donating here. snacks and drinks are good too... and you can schedule your next visit right there with them or just schedule online another day, it's up to you. cheers and keep on donating! read more

I come here to donate blood. The process is quick and efficient if you have an appointment. If you stop in without an appointment it can take a while. The easiest way to get through the check-in process is to hand them your blood donor card to scan. That way they find you in the system easier. I've always thought on donating blood regularly, but didn't act on it - until today. Fortunately, I'm not squeamish with blood or needles, so it wasn't difficult for me to make my way here. Didn't have an appointment. I dropped by an hour before they were about to close and they still took me in. Signing in, registering, checking my iron levels, drawing blood, snack eating, etc. summed up to one hour. One thing I forgot about was the iron test. I'm sure it's just a small poke in reality, but it felt like a puncture. More so because your finger is squeezed to roll droplets into the tiny plastic opening of the iron measure-r (I have no idea what the device is called.). This bothered me way more than the actual blood drawing. But aside from that, everything else was a breeze. Parking was also easy. Plenty of spots in the garage for those who are donating. Remember your license plate number, and the make and model of your car - you'll need this info to write in at the front desk (make sure your car isn't whisked away while you're donating). I'll definitely be donating again! Because I know the donations make differences. And as long as I can help, I will do what I can to save another person's life. I have a rare blood type (AB+, about 3/100 people have it) and am also a universal donor for plasma. So, I donate monthly which is the max amount you can do it. I know I could go to other facilities and get paid for doing it but never feel like those places are legit, plus it's a pay it forward thing. Anyway, scheduling is super easy and everyone I've spoken with when making appointments has been quick and efficient on top of being really nice. Checking in is easy and the Central Seattle location has Sunday appointments! Hooray! The in-take process is generally pretty quick, take your blood pressure, temperature and prick your finger to make sure you have enough iron in your blood. From there you move to the donation room where all the action happens. All my people have been awesome. I have rolling veins and need lower draw pressure, something I make sure to tell them since rolling veins are a pain in the butt. You are offered a warmed blanket and an iPad if you want. I think the whole process is pretty interesting and for me takes about an hour from check in to cantine. They also now have potato chips for all you watching your carbs but still want a treat. read more

I went to their website and noticed there was no option for plasma donation. I gave them a call and the nice woman on the phone let me know that for a first time donor I'd have to first donate whole blood or platelets so that they could type my blood. I told her that I already knew my blood type (AB+) and as such was only interested in donating plasma. Unfortunately, this facility is unable to do that so I will go elsewhere. I've never run into this issue donating in other areas so I was a bit taken back. I'm sure they are nice here based on the positive reviews, but that protocol just seems wrong to me. Terrible clinic to deal with at the administrative level. Lots of needless red tape for people needing a therapeutic phlebotomy. The Medical Director, Dr. Alcorn must approve therapeutic phlebotomies before one can obtain an appt. These take weeks to approve and they don't call patient to let them know when approved. Why, when one can walk into any Red Cross to donate blood, does Bloodworks NW require their physician to approve orders for blood draw prescribed by one's own MD? It's anyone's guess. Calls to Dr. Alcorn go unanswered. I was finally able to reach Dr. Nestor, the co-Medical director, and was told I needed to speak with Dr. Alcorn, and then HUNG UP ON ME!!! So you want to donate blood, but can't get to Bloodworks during their regular hours? They'll bring the donation center to you with their traveling bloodmobile, which makes it quick and convenient to give blood. They take walk-ins as well as appointments, but it's probably better to make an appointment if you can, to help them schedule (and get you in and out faster). The bloodmobile is set up for whole-blood donation only, so I believe if you want to do plasma or other types of donations, you'll still have to go to their offices. The bloodmobile is pretty tight quarters, but I'm always impressed by how much they can fit into a small space. When you come in, there's a small seating area where you can fill out the questionnaire. Then you'll go to a small, private cubicle where they ask you some follow-up questions and do a finger stick. After that, you're ready to donate! There are four beds along the walls for donation. It's surprisingly comfortable and the actual donation process takes about 10-15 minutes. They have several technicians on hand who check on you throughout and can help if you need anything. After donating, you sit in another small seating area at the front, where there's a small fridge and snack area with juice, water, cookies, crackers, etc. Once you've proven that you're not going to pass out, you're free to go! The whole thing usually takes me 45 minutes. The bloodmobile's schedule corresponds to the amount of time they recommend between donations, so it takes the guesswork out of remembering how long it's been since your last donation. You can also check your account online to see when you last donated and when the bloodmobile will be in your area next, and you can get text or email reminders that are very handy. Dear PSBC, Your staff is amazing, professional and fun. You are extremely efficient (although we regular donors still have to fill out the same survey EVERY 8 weeks when we come in to donate) and always seem to bend over backwards to help everyone. The guy next to me last time almost passed out (apparently he had somewhat of an aversion to needles) and they were not fazed at all. Instead, they talked him out of his sweat, took care of him and made him feel at ease. Please donate to keep up the supply for the blood bank, just think about this. A. Heart surgery can require 2-6 units of blood B. A liver transplant patient, on average, will need six - 10 units of red blood cells, 20 units of plasma and 10 units of platelets (or one - two units of apheresis platelets). C. Only 37 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood - less than 10 percent do annually. D. 1 pint of blood can save up to 3 lives. Do you need any more reasons? xxo, Liana read more

I also donate on a regular basis but can't say that I do this out of the kindness of my heart. I love sitting in those reclining chairs with a warm blanket on my lap, and then getting cookies and crackers afterwards. The staff is always super friendly and the whole process is very easy. Like other reviewers have said, when it's time to donate again, they will call you CONSTANTLY. They have called my cell 17 times in the last 6 days and they technically weren't even open for two of those days! I try to reserve my next appointment day/time while I'm eating cookies after donating but I don't think these appointments all get put into the official calendar necessarily. I finally signed up for an online account so I can just do this on my own time without being bombarded by phone calls. For real, can they at least cut down the calls to once a week or something? read more

I recommend not donating on days that you are fighting a cold/virus or are feeling peckish. I have one of those dumb blood types that only recipients with the same kind of blood as I have can use it, but if it alleviates the need for blood for somebody out there, I'm still going. Here! Take my dumb blood! I call in to make an appointment, and upon arrival, sign in and wait until my name is called. The blood is taken by excellent phlebotomists who chat you up. In the room behind the blood draw room, is a larger area where you can donate plasma. I've been meaning to do this as well, but I understand that there is a time committment to it that I'll need to work out first. It would be great if somebody reviewed PSBC at least monthly on Yelp, to help remind us of the good work that they do. I have donated blood once in my life, I was in high school and about a minute into it I passed out. So much for that. I recently decided that I want to donate blood. I called, made appointment, and came into the Puget Sound Blood Center in Lynnwood. Very nice place. The staff is extremely helpful, everyone there answered all of my (hundred) questions and helped me feel at ease (I was nervous). The place is obviously clean and well organized. This was the first time I was donating blood - had my blood drawn multiple times before. The nurse made me sit on a chair for 30+ minutes when I asked them how was it going, they tried to move the needle around to increase the rate of blood supply and when I was half way through my collection they told me that the rate is not fast enough and they need to collect blood within a specific time otherwise it will be thrown away. I asked them what were the chances of the rate increasing and they said no chances. So I asked them to stop proceeding ahead since there were no chances of this actually succeeding. This is crazy, the fact that they knew the blood was not flowing as per the usual flow and making me sit through this for 30 minutes and then throwing more than half the required blood away and only when I told them that they should stop they did was just not acceptable. Also all the instruments - blood pressure monitor etc was outdated - everything including checking pulse rate was done manually. I will never go to this place ever again for anything. read more

Before I moved to Seattle, I had been giving blood for about four years. Nothing about the process really bothers me, and it's obviously well worth it, but this location really makes me question that. I've only been there 2 or 3 times, but every time, everyone from the phlebotomist to the volunteer at the snacks afterward has been kind of rude. I know it's not their fault if some weird guy volunteers to man the snacks, but it definitely kills your good mood when someone rolls their eyes at your needing help to obtain juice (because, you know, hole in your arm). I'm just used to giving blood in places where everyone is cheerful and thanks you for being there, as opposed to acting like you're inconveniencing them. Also, I know they're contractually obliged to call you twice a day until you donate again, but someone from there left me a weird and snippy voicemail telling me it had been too long since I came in. I wish I'd encountered the staff that the other reviewers apparently did. It feels weird to be slagging on a volunteer activity, but maybe this will help them to remember to treat us like volunteers they ought to entice to come back. I have thought long and hard about writing this review, because I believe in blood donation and the important work this organization does. I can't state that enough. But the last time I donated blood at one of their mobile units, I came away with a botched needle and a large, uncomfortable hematoma with major bruising. I know this is always possible and that the phlebotimists aren't perfect, just human. But the more I think about it, the more I think that the person who drew my blood was not present to the situation. I think she was going through the motions and not really paying attention to me and checking to make sure everything was as perfect as could be individually for me. I think I sensed this, but what do you do in the Bloodmobile? A week later I am still sore with major bruising and I can't help but feel that I was injured due to someone's lack of attention. I've never had this experience before. Perhaps this person needs a bit more supervision in order to get her on track, paying individual attention that is so crucial to a positive experience. I am not sure that I will donate again after this experience. I really don't want to go through this again. read more

The hardest part is actually making the time to go back every two months. But *cue my plug for the cause* it's very important! Go! Give! They know me by name, actually, and take the time to chat and make one feel comfortable -- especially if you're donating platelets (which takes several hours, as opposed to whole blood). There's a parking garage, too. Free parking for donors, just sign in at the front desk. Yes, they will call you a lot. I requested that they email me instead, and the calls dropped off somewhat, but I understand they are calling because they need to. I usually just don't answer the phone, but at least when they call, I know the 60 days has passed and it's time to donate a pint again. I love that there's a place in Lynnwood where I can drop in and donate blood when it's convenient to me. Appointments are an option if you prefer that. The site is clean and uncluttered. The volunteers that greet you and provide post donation drinks and snacks were awesome. My phlebotomist unfortunately was a bit immature. Her finance was there and they kept making eyes at each other while she was poking me with a needle. Bloodworks wasted an hour of my time by incorrectly interpreting eligibility requirements for travel. I went to donate whole blood on April 1st, 2019 and during the pre-screen, mentioned travel locations for the prior 12 months, which included two different cities in Colombia (Bogota and Medellin) in March and April of 2018. The person conducting the pre-screen was looking at a computer generated map which showed Colombia as "red" (indicating deferral) due to potential for Malaria. However, there was an annotation for two cities (shown as dots on the map) that indicated Bogota and Cartagena were not included in the deferral. After about a 10 minute discussion with someone on the phone, the person concluded that because Medellin was not shown on their map, then it must be on the deferral list and I would not be able to give blood. I indicated that I had just given blood three months prior using the same exact travel information at a Carter center in Dallas. She decided that Carter MUST have made a mistake during their screening process. So after my attempts to assure this person I did not have Malaria, I walked out after wasting my hour and they did not receive what I'm sure is badly needed A- blood. After I returned home, I looked at the CDC website which provides the recommendations for blood screens. The CDC website clearly indicated that Bogota AND Medellin were not on the Malaria (or Zika) list. This in and of itself is not why they are getting the bad review. They are getting the bad review because I called them when I got home and explained that they needed to update their information. I was told by the customer service rep that she would look into the issue and call me back. Of course, I never heard anything. So I booked an appointment instead at a Red Cross donation event the next day without any issues. I will be using Red Cross from now on. read more

I started donating once I reached the minimum weight requirement a few months ago (I love rice). I've been to Bloodworks twice-- once for donating blood and once for donating platelets. All the staff are beyond amazing. They are friendly, helpful, and informative. They also go out of their way to make sure everyone is comfortable. As other Yelpers have mentioned, the warm blankets and snacks are a nice bonus! Also, my apheresis nurse was awesome. She did a great job with inserting the needle with minimal pain and talked me through everything she was doing. I urge everyone to donate if you meet the requirements. As a side note, I'm a nurse and I transfuse blood products to oncology patients ALL the time, so I can honestly say that I have seen the difference that blood donors have made. read more
