The first location I've been in was at lower east side and ever since then I am a fan! I agree with some of the reviewers here that it is quite on the pricey end but the quality is definitely there. This location is smaller than the one in Manhattan. It is still a cute cafe and they sell some merchandise. My personal favorite is the matcha latte so I ordered this one at this location and did some study time. Although the location is on a smaller end, there is a table by the window with four stools. A bit cramped if full but it was comfortable for me since there wasn't a lot of people. The staff here are nice. I will come back! read more

Blue Bottle Coffee gets its name from the first-ever coffee shop in Central Europe after the repulsion of a 1683 attack on Vienna by the Ottoman Empire, whose soldiers left behind bags of coffee. Fast forward to the early 2000s, and Blue Bottle Coffee was formed as a response to the commercial coffee enterprise and overly roasted coffee beans (ironically, Blue Bottle is becoming commercialized itself as it expands nationwide and will be opening a new Cambridge, MA location). This particular location on Smith Street is a tad small, so don't expect much indoor seating space for a meet up with friends or a comfortable independent study session. Unless it's the summer months, you'll likely have to get your coffee to-go or else freeze outside. This is disappointing because the coffee quality merits the chance to sit down and slowly enjoy it over a stimulating conversation with friends. (While we're on the theme of replicating Austrian coffee shops, weren't 17th/18th century coffee shops centers of intellectual exchange and conversation?! That was indeed the case in Ottoman Turkey, starting in the 14th century. It follows that some indoor seating space is in order.). Furthermore, the prices here are a tad on the expensive side- even by NYC standards. That said, the coffee quality here is very good. The cappuccino I bought was fantastic- a case of getting what you pay for. I was also able to try the New Orleans iced coffee, which is cold-brewed for 12 hours with roasted chicory, sweetened with organic cane sugar, and served with milk. As good as the cappuccino was, the NOLA iced coffee is undoubtedly star of the menu. As sweet as the iced coffee was the service. I was afforded very warm service, and my barista's passion for and knowledge about coffee was in full display on the day. read more

Now, I know this won't be a very popular or well-received opinion by most - but when you stack rank Blue Bottle Coffee among the other premium-level coffee spots in the neighborhood, it's about as average of a cup of coffee you can get. I went in with high expectations, and walked away thinking, "not bad... but probably not again." That said, the people working here were lovely. And I'm not sure if it's standard across all Blue Bottle Coffee locations, but there's no real seating area at this one (aside from a few stools along the bar). read more

Ah, Blue Bottle... One of my other go-to coffee joints in and around the city. I tend to lean toward the cold brew here versus hot at my other place, mainly because the cold brew here really is something special. You have two choices when it comes to cold brew: the single origin and the New Orleans. Single origin is served black, whereas New Orleans is served with milk and sugar. Normally I'm not too crazy about putting milk and sugar in coffee. I tend to like it just smooth and concentrated. The single origin is just that. However, the New Orleans does make an occasional exception to that rule because it's just so well balanced even with the added milk and sugar. Pricing is slightly on the expensive side... They are selling an addictive substance after all... read more

I have been counting down the days until Blue Bottle opened in my 'hood & I now wake up every morning and do a happy dance knowing that I can grab a seriously amazing cappuccino/shot of espresso/or cup of coffee before starting my day! The space itself is tiny, but I think that lends to it's charm. If you're from the neighborhood and saw this location before they opened, you likely would have noticed what an eye sore the space was. I love that they put in a large window which helps to make the shop appear larger and on a good day with the window wide open, it invites you to spill out onto the sidewalk and enjoy your cup of caffeine while catching up with your neighbors. There is a small counter where you can enjoy your drink, however, I do prefer to take mine to go because it can get quite crowded. I was pretty shocked that given the space, they have a bathroom which is pretty unheard of/unexpected given the size. The espresso is perfectly pulled by knowledgeable baristas, the mochas are made with Mast brothers chocolate and it's quite possibly one of my favorite mochas I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying, and the New Orleans cold brew is perfection. Basically, I love everything they serve and if you really appreciate quality brew, you will also love Blue Bottle. read more

The mothership has landed splat in the middle of my neighborhood. Sweet! Walk up to this new location right off the corner of a smith & a block over from to Bergen st F/G. The layout actually reminds me a bit of Abraço. You'll find marble counters on the outside & inside for having coffee to stay. If you haven't been to blue bottle before they're originally from SF. Honestly this is the best blue bottle I have ever tried! I'm not sure how that is possible when I'm sure they all have the same menu but somehow they just always make my drink perfect! Only downside is the limited seating inside. In the summer time most people linger outside; however, winter time it's best to just get your coffee to go. The price of the coffee is pretty steep (close to $5 for a pretty small cup) but a great pick me up for days I'm treating myself. read more

Absolutely adorable spot, but we aware: Take & go, or else the only place to "sit" is at the window counter overlooking Dean Street, which can accommodate about four people at best. A friend, the beau, and I saw this place from a distance while walking through the neighborhood on a cold, rainy Saturday afternoon. We wanted to sit...but...yeah. Ha! No matter. We got our delicious drinks quickly; I opted for the Mast Brothers hot cocoa, which is definitely leaning on the side of bitter and cocoa-y as opposed to sweet and chocolaty. I like it that way! Too many cocoas are over-sweetened, which is nice on occasion, but I prefer it with more natural cocoa flavor as opposed to drinking a liquid milk chocolate bar. The quality of the Americano I saw the beau get was impressive; it was rich, creamy and fragrant. Great use of a tiny space on a thriving corner of Smith Street a block from the subway. Of course Blue Bottle coffee is pretty good, that goes without saying, but I'm really impressed by the solid and stylish bar they have, the couple relaxing stools inside, big window, outside benches, and even a bathroom. They fit way more into that tiny space than many cafes which are much larger. We were visiting NYC for a few days and in preparation researched coffee shops we wanted to check out. This one made it on our list and we went 3 times. It did not disappoint. We had drip, espresso, cappuccino and a latte. I can't properly describe the flavors so I'll just say it was all flavorful and rich. The first drink we had was espresso (I assume it was espresso) and it was kind of crazy tasting (it's served with a side of fizzy water). I couldn't drink all of the small portion but knew it would be amazing in milk - it was. It's sort of sweet and spicy - no sugar needed. I was only sad that they wouldn't make my cappuccino dry, but it was so good I didn't care. The space is very small inside, but there's a window counter to stand at outside and a couple of benches on the sidewalk. There's a small case of baked goods that looked good, but it's really about the coffee. We did have a ginger molasses cookie that was delicious. You could taste and see the ginger and the texture was soft. The other place we wanted to check out was Stumptown. It was really good, too, and I think their pastries were better. But the latte and cappuccino at Blue Bottle were tops. read more

The baristas at BB are some of my favorites in the neighborhood - perhaps it's the cozy intimate space but you can't help but having a chat while waiting for your pour over. They feature different roasts daily along with other options for a little more money. A full coffee bar, you can get whatever your fancy - cappuccino, latte, etc but unique to BB is their iced New Orleans. A little sweet, a little spicy from the chicory - and creamy with whole milk (or non dairy option if needed). A solid 10 in my book. read more

First time I had blue bottle coffee was when they opened a pop up store in Rockaway beach. I loved it! After reading the reviews, I thought I should try the New Orleans blend which has raved reviews. I asked if they make it hot and was told no but mocha is the closest as far as taste goes. So mocha it is. Someone mentioned the mocha was a tad different from what they're used to and I have to agree. It's a lot stronger but you'll get used to the taste. Why 4 stars? Well, the place is super cramped and not much room for seating. They have about four stools. They do accept debit/credit but they only accept Apple pay which isn't cool because not everyone has an Apple phone. They should accommodate those who use Samsung pay. Also the prices are steep so be aware of that too. read more

It's really small and cozy and offers a nice escape from the chaotic New York life. I ordered a small caffe mocha. It tasted weird at first but I think that's only because I'm used to mocha being sweeter. Theirs tasted like raw cocoa coffee, but I grew accustomed to it - twas very thick and rich. I was thrilled to come back and get one of my favorite drink, Hojicha latte, after 4 months of staying away from it due to the pandemic. I ordered a large iced Hojicha latte today and happily paid $7.08 and brought it home to try since I didn't want to take off my mask on the street to drink it since there were several people nearby. There were just too many ice when I opened the lid at home. When I took out half of the ice, the cup was not even half filled as you can see in the photo. Not even a single sip out of the cup and this is what you get for $7.08. If you think they made the drink stronger that the ice melting inside would get to the right balance, you are wrong. The latte was already watered down on my way home (which took less than 5 min). Feel like they made the drink for the regular size but added more ice to the large cup and rip me off. Will not return to this place. Total waste of my money and time on this hot and humid day. read more

My feelings for Blue Bottle Coffee are usually ones of unquestioning affection, but here the halo slipped slightly, maybe because I deviated from my usual drip coffee routine. Feeling slightly reckless I ordered a flat white. I consider flat whites to be slightly more difficult to pull off than lattes, but who better to charge with this task than the mighty Blue Bottle? The result however was.. slightly disappointing: inoffensive but somewhat bland compared to the flat whites I'm used to in London. Then, determined to import some of the Blue Bottle magic back to the UK, I asked the wool-attired baristas which coffee they'd recommend for Aeropress. In contrast to the confident, unswerving suggestions one typically receives in London speciality cafes, their answers were vague, noncommital and even inaccurate as to the stock levels they had. Eventually I retrieved a bag of Ethiopian beans and was at least pleased to see that it had been roasted the previous day. I remain a fan of Blue Bottle Coffee, and, just about, of this location. However, their slip-ups were disconcerting, akin to discovering that a hero of mine - my parents, Google, Anthony Wiener - was irrefutably human after all. Ah well. read more

Long long ago when Blue Bottle was just a stand at the farmers market in San Francisco, it would be one of the first places we would stop when visiting family. We never would have guessed it would eventually end up in New York, let alone off Smith Street. Yes it is ridiculously priced but we do feel that it is that much better than Stumptown or Gorilla (whose beams always taste burned) to make it worth it. The cold pressed coffee is great but our new obsession is the New Orleans. I only drink coffee black, but for the New Orleans I make an exception. My new weekend tradition/addiction is a New Orleans followed by Carpe Donut at Bergen and Court. I've had blue bottle before, but only in the Bay area. How would it be in New York? Dun dun dun!!!! Pretty good, overall. I had my usual, which was a very well prepared latte. They used the Hayes valley espresso, which didn't seem as fresh as when I had it in Hayes valley, but still good. I prefer the Roman Espresso, but this one is good too. Maybe they just use fresher beans at the Ferry building farmer's market or weekends, so that's why it wasn't exactly killer. However, it was a very good cup. After reading great reviews on yelp and really wanting to try new coffee shops, J and I decided to try out Blue Bottle Coffee. This location is actually really small, more of a to-go place, although they do have a few stools by the window. Pretty cramped space. The menu is pretty small, which is actually pretty cool to me, since I won't spend forever deciding what I should get. We decided on the New Orleans Iced Coffee (4.00 + Tax......what? The cups really small) which has chicory and cane sugar in it. I personally don't like sugar in my Iced Coffee and like the plain coffee flavor (no special flavors, etc). The New Orleans wasn't sweet at all, which I liked. The chicory in the coffee gave it a good and interesting flavor, which I would describe as nutty but it wasn't "out of your mind" amazing. Overall, I'll stick to my regular iced coffee. I feel that it's too expensive for what you're getting (size/amount), even if it is good quality. If you're a coffee fanatic or just want a decent cup-o-joe, Blue Bottle is a good place to try out. read more
