I do not know why it took us so long to discover this place. We always compare new Mexican restaurants to our favorites, and most never compare, but this place was so stinking delicious. I am sorry I did not visit sooner. I believe it is more recent, within the last or so, and that it was a different restaurant before. The chips were exactly the way I like them, hot, salty, and crispy. The salsa was good too. We had a few drinks. Modelo Negra, which is smooth and drinkable. I had the Blue Cactus margarita, I highly recommend, and their version of the Stoli Doli, which was very nice. We had a combo plate and a giant chimi. The giant chimi is what I typically get at my favorite place, and this establishment did such a great job, I no longer have to drive out far to get it. It has both chicken and beef, and I love the pickled vegetables on top. I really want to try more drinks and some their desserts and maybe bring the kids next time, they would love it. read more

This place should be called "BLEW" Cactus Cantina because everything about my experience blew. I honestly don't know how anyone can say this is good food. I rarely write negative reviews and usually give restaurants the benefit of the doubt, but I can't let this one slide. I visited with my family of four (my wife and two young children). We ordered drinks and were served chips and salsa. The chips were hot--which, unfortunately, was about the only thing that was hot during our entire meal (except for the beans). The salsa came in a tiny bowl, and if you want more chips, salsa, or even water, you'd better ask. I agree with many of the other reviews regarding the service. The staff seemed either oblivious or simply uninterested. They were not attentive at all. The drinks from the bar took a while to arrive, and by the time my wife's margarita showed up, most of the ice had already melted. She ended up adding ice from her water glass. Then the food arrived. We ordered a kids' cheese quesadilla, chicken tenders and fries, an enchilada plate (two cheese enchiladas and one shredded chicken enchilada), and the veggie burrito meal. The problems started immediately. My daughter's cheese quesadilla wasn't even melted. It literally looked like someone sprinkled shredded cheese inside a tortilla and served it. We sent it back to be reheated. Next, my wife's veggie burrito was almost entirely onions. I'm not exaggerating--it was packed with onions and maybe three small pieces of red pepper. That was it. If that's what's inside, call it an onion burrito, not a veggie burrito. We sent it back and asked for a shredded chicken burrito instead. Then I tried my enchiladas. Once again, the cheese wasn't melted. To make matters worse, I ordered two cheese enchiladas and one chicken enchilada, but they brought me three cheese enchiladas. I took a couple of bites and couldn't eat any more. The food was bland and disappointing. When my wife's replacement chicken burrito arrived, it was a mess as well. The only other thing that was actually hot were the beans, and they were just okay. The chicken tenders and fries were fine, but that's hardly an accomplishment when all you have to do is drop them in a fryer. This was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had in a very long time. I left genuinely frustrated. What made the experience even more disappointing was the manager's response. The manager was aware of both issues--the unmelted quesadilla and the onion-filled burrito--yet nothing was done while we were dining. After I had already paid the bill, the manager finally came over and said, "Maybe we can do something." At that point, what exactly was there to do? A reasonable gesture would have been removing the onion-filled burrito from the bill or addressing the problems when they first occurred. They should have been embarrassed to serve food in that condition in the first place. I will NEVER, EVER go back there! I'm getting frustrated again just writing this review and reliving the experience. If you're considering eating here, consider this your warning. read more

Kirsten is waiting on us. The chips are hot, not too bad, some are a tad over fried and they are rather greasy too. Salsa is mild. No house hot salsa at all. Their hot salsa is a bottle of Cholula. :( The Guacamole is expensive, $12, probably not made to order either. Kirsten confirmed the guacamole is not fresh and is premade, can not be made spicy at all. She suggested adding Cholula, again. I asked if they don't have jalapeño at all, she said yes. We ordered an overpriced small guacamole for $12 and a chicken fajita for two with corn tortillas for $32, also expensive! $46.59 This is likely one of the more expensive Mexican restaurants we have been to in a long while and it's not even a gourmet or fusion either. Prices are closer to NYC or LA prices. Crazy prices here for what you get. Then again their rent is likely sky high since it's a Jonna building. Their salsa ramekin is so small, we usually run out of chips before we run out of salsa at most Mexican restaurants. Let's see how the rest of the food goes, not impressed so far and can't see this place lasting at their prices for another year or so. It's not that busy here either, maybe 4-5 customers early this afternoon. No more chips or salsa refill, we had to ask for more salsa and then more chips too later. Our waitress isn't attentive at all. The premade guacamole didn't come out until our fajita was out, that's not a good order for food items out, especially given the guacamole is premade. Service is not first priority for sure here. Have to ask for things for stuff and attention. Don't recommend their corn tortillas? They don't heat them up, so they disintegrate and fall apart. The flour is the better option for the fajitas. The rice and beans are just filler, not so good. The pico looks to be premade as well and not so fresh. The guacamole wasn't bad, they kicked it up with Serrano peppers. The chicken fajita was decent. More peppers would have been nice, a lot of onions. read more

Fantastic Experience at This Mexican Gem! We went there for dinner, huge group with kids, everyone had a wonderful time. From the moment we walked in, the ambience was warm, clean, and inviting.. The staff stood out as incredibly helpful and genuinely courteous, making sure everything was just right throughout our visit. Complementary Perfectly crisp warm chips and salsa. The food was delicious and full of authentic flavor. My favorite was the Baja tacos with fried avocados--crispy, creamy, and bursting with flavor. I'd go back just for those! To top it off, the pricing was very reasonable. It's refreshing to find a place that offers such high quality without being overpriced. Please stay that way. We ordered takeout from here and it wasn't bad! If I'm getting Mexican I'm always going with some sort of tacos, quesadillas, or fajitas but we opted to try their nachos which weren't bad at all. Good service, bright, uplifting yellow decor, and our waiter was patient and kind with young kids at the table. My food was OK but nothing stellar (3/5) : the chicken flauta was alright (and helped by its many toppings). I live outside the area but if I return, I would try the beef flautas or just get another dish like fajitas (the lovely smell was wafting over from a neighboring table). The reason for the higher overall score of 4 is that my other family members got salads that they were raving about (steak taco salad and Cabo style veggie rice and bean bowl salad). Went here with some friends while camping at Proud Lake, the waitress was not a good server, we had to ask for water, one order was completely the wrong dish. She did admit she was a new server, shame on the restaurant for not overseeing her and giving her the skills needed to perform her job adequately. I ordered the Mexican sandwich with fajita steak and the meat was over cooked and tough to cut. The person who got the wrong dish, later on he had an upset stomach after we got back to the campsite. We absolutely love this place, for sure the best Mexican restaurant around. We always sit at the bar, and the bartender ( might be owner?) is always gracious and makes great drinks. Our food is always enjoyed, and weird as it might sound, the refried beans are really good. I usually get the tacos, but have had fajitas and also enchiladas that were great. There's something fishy about the negative reviews. They are literally Mayans that are working the kitchen EVERY time we go. My friend and I went here for $11 happy hour margaritas and asked if we could get a different tequila. The bartender suggested one we never heard of but didn't tell us there would be an up-charge. So we were literally charged $25 for each margarita! I've have been to some of the most expensive restaurants in town and I've never been charged $25 a margarita - a poorly made one at that. Just ridiculous and shady all around. And the food was subpar - just your typical "whitewashed" mexican cuisine with tons of sauce and cheese melted all over everything like slop. I finally had a chance to try this updated Mexican restaurant from its predecessors and was delightfully impressed. The atmosphere and music were colorful, cozy and fun. The service was attentive and we were a large table. We started with chips, salsa and an order of guacamole. The salsa was tasty with a good flavor balance. The guacamole was excellent with a noticeable lime citrus flavor. The entrees were all excellent. I had the burrito bowl which had wonderfully marinated steak that was tender, juicy and incredibly flavorful. Other entrees included the super burrito which what huge and amazing, delicious shredded beef tacos, a Mexican pizza and a steak quesadilla. All were outstanding in quality and value. Today was the second time we ordered food from blue cactus and the second time we were absolutely blown away by how generous the portions were, how wonderful the food tasted and the sides that accompanied each item were thoughtfully put together in our bag to go. I highly recommend blue cactus.They just know what they're doing. They have also introduced some fantastic lunch specials available Monday through Friday from 11 until 3 all for $9 dollars. This was a great find. Just opened. Try the Blue Cactus Margarita. It's their signature cocktail, a nice classic margarita made with Reposado tequila and a unique light blue hue. Food came out quick and the portions are big. Good variety of vegetarian items or things that can be made vegetarian with a few modifications. I did a fajita veggie quesadilla.
