I have been going here for years. I had a bad history with dentists and was pretty mental when I started as a patient here due to past experiences. I thought I'd take a minute to review after a great appointment I had yesterday. Long is the hygienist who has cleaned my teeth all these years; he's so kind and wonderful! Yesterday, I pointed out to Dr. Schaeffer something cosmetic I didn't like about my teeth, and he took the extra time to fix it on the spot, and it made such a huge difference to me. Let's just say that Francis Schafer conducted a Root Canal on the tooth behind tooth number 30 and manys years later, they find that he left roots in my mouth which caused additional infection to which I'm now being treated for. He should know better as he's a third generation dentist. There's also the possibility that I may not have needed a root canal to begin with. More like a crown was possibly needed instead. They gave me Lidocaine and I could still feel everything. It was a lot of pain but I sat through and have more work coming up. That's more pain to endure. I do not appreciate any of it and I'm shielding out more money for this. Bad Dentist and I said what I said. read more

I feel awkward for reviewing a dental place but here goes. I've only had two dentists in my life. My previous dentists was forgettable but reputable. I went because it was close to my house. This dentist is also close to my house. I've been going to Blue Creek Dental for +5 years now. I've met Dr. Shaeffer a few times and he's always been quick and to the point. Each session with him lasts like ~2 min because I have good teeth. The dental hygienists here are the highlights. The staff is nice and they are efficient. My only con is that his place is too popular so if you cancel a appointment, it'll be rescheduled for the next month. I don't know how to review a good dentist really. They give out decent Oral-B toothbrushes with their visits? My previous dentist gave out the crappy off brand brushes with each cleaning. Would I come here again? Yes. About 6 months ago I was in need of a new dentist that was on my insurance plan and was having a difficult time finding one with great reviews. Then one day when I was dripping something off, I saw one of the dental hygentist getting ready to leave and politely rolled down my window from car her about Blue Creek (which I never even was there). She had great things to say about her place of employment. Then I went on Yelp and low and behold....great reviews!! After a few months of waiting because they Re very busy, I went for my visit today and it was WONDERFUL! Ashley was my hygienist and she was fabulous. Dr Schaffer the dentist was lovely. I am so happy to have "stumbled" on this place. The office is beautiful and not overly fancy, which I love. Has Netflix, if you so choose to watch. And was just great service! Need one filling, so will go back soon and see how that goes, but I feel very confident about this place. Highly recommend!! read more

I have to say I am a HUGE HUGE HUGE fan of Dr. Schaeffer. You walk into this very nicely built out area. They have a little fountain and the chairs arent too uncomfortable. I have a difficult time with insurance because for two years I did not have insurance, so I am never quite sure how it all works (dont ask). The ladies at the front desk had no problems with all my questions - at least they didnt tell me to my face that I am just dumb when it comes to it. I felt very comfortable interacting with them. I went back into the room. They had little tv's broadcasting CNN. The hygenist and I were talking about whatever it was on the screen at the moment and she asked me a few questions about my past history. Because it was my first visit, they had to take a lot of x-rays. She was very good and seemingly proficient at this task. She left and came back with Dr. Schaeffer who looked at the x-rays on the television screen with me. He explained what was going on in my mouth. You know, in all my years of going to the dentist no one ever explained to me why I never got cavities. I have 2x the enamel of the average human being...that makes perfect sense!!! That was the good news, the bad news was I am losing bone around my teeth...this means that he would have to seriously get in there and clean. Dr. Schaeffer discussed the pros and cons and my options. I opted to get the cleaning. He numbed my teeth and kept checking through the process if I was doing o.k. Then he cleaned. It was fairly painless...there were a few spots...but other than that it was o.k. I left with clean teeth and assurance my teeth werent going to fall out at age 50. Total cost: $150... Not bad for the procedure. read more

Having broken up with my previous dentist, I got a ton of great recommendations to come see Dr. Schaeffer. Thankfully, they could schedule me almost immediately and it was a great experience. After some quick x-rays, Dr. Schaeffer sat down with me and discussed any issues I might have. Nothing to report from the x-rays, so my cleaning started. I love the ultrasonic cleaning tool they used - way less creepy than picking and scraping. I zoned out watching the tv in the room and it was over in no time. His staff was great as well. The only con is that the parking lot gets pretty crowded, especially at lunch time. But on the plus side? Fro-yo next door! read more

I definitely owe my happy mouth to Yelp since that's how I found Dr. Shaeffer (no "C" in his name!) and Blue Creek Dental. After an embarrassingly lengthy dental hiatus and armed with shiny new dental insurance, I booked an appointment for a check-up and due to the popularity of BCD, had to wait about three months to be seen. Due to my absence from dentistry, I had to get some pretty intensive cleaning done but the staff explained the current state of my teeth and gums and told me about the costs ahead of time. Dr. Shaeffer and his office folks and hygienists are all professional and quite nice. I feel comfortable asking questions, and thorough and careful work is done. No issues with billing and my insurance either. Follow-up appointments were also positive, though one time I had to wait a longer while to be led back. The only downside is that Blue Creek Dental is too popular, so it's often hard to schedule an appointment for the ideal date/time, and I'm often placed on hold when I call. And I like the distraction of the TVs in the patient areas but I can't see the screen when I'm horizontal. TVs on the ceiling perhaps? read more

Just took my daughter for an emergency appointment (tooth pain). Everyone was wonderful. From the front desk attendees to Dr. Shaeffer, every staff member we encountered was super warm and nice. Dental appointments can feel a little bit like trying to buy a car these days, with all of the "upselling". This wasn't that kind of experience at all. The doctor showed us the xrays and didn't try and create worry or problems where it wasn't necessary. I previously visited another dental office but I am seriously considering switching to Blue Creek Dental. read more

I've been going to Dr. Shaeffer for the last four years and always have an amazing experience with him, however, I have to update my review based on recent occurrences: - Prices have gone up up up. - I had to cancel an appointment that I had scheduled, and then when I tried to reschedule I was told it was about four months out and that I needed to call weekly on Mondays to see if there were cancellations sooner. Unfortunately, I can't do that with my current schedule and I need an appointment sooner than four months as I'll be well out of my routine cleaning mark at that point if I waited. - I've now been trying to call the office for the last two hours to have my records sent over to a new dentist... but have been receiving a busy signal each time I call. I don't know what has happened - if you've become that busy that you can't offer loyal patients appointments any earlier than 3 to 4 months out, you should at least offer a wait list rather than having the patients call back weekly to try and get a cancellation appointment. Bums me out, but what can ya do. read more

I needed a dentist and my student dental insurance is unbelievably crappy. After trying in vain to find a dentist that takes my insurance who doesn't also have dozens of negative reviews online, I decided to just suck it up and go to a good (read: expensive, non-crappy-insurance-taking) dentist. Life's too short to suffer through a bad dental appointment. Thankfully, Blue Creek Dental did not disappoint me. When I called to set up an appointment for a cleaning, they were able to see me the very next day. After getting my x-rays and cleaning, I mentioned that I was a little concerned about a crack in one of my molars. I've had similar problems before that needed to be crowned. No problem -- they had time to do the temporary crown that same morning, and a week later the permanent crown was back from the lab and installed in my mouth. No trip to the dentist will be completely painless, but these guys do a great job. Everyone's friendly, and they are clearly dedicated to patient service. I have not-great teeth and also a fairly strong fear of dentists. Dr. Shaeffer is wonderful. Even though my track record on scheduling appointments isn't great, he never makes me feel bad but stays focused on "you're here now" in a very kind way... which makes it easier for me to overcome my fear and make appointments. I recently got my braces taken off in January after eight years of having them. I had a lot of decay on my top first four front teeth and they were severely stained. I went to Dr. Shaeffer, and he examined my mouth. Then, within two appointments he was able to rebuild the 4 decaying teeth and I purchased a whitening kit from him in order to whiten my teeth before my scheduled appointments. He is a great dentist. He restored my teeth by using composite resin dental fillings and he took his time to make sure they matched my other teeth's color and shape. Thank you. read more

My kids and family go here. And I have been here once. The service is excellent once on the phone and in the office. However, it is nearly impossible to get an appointment. My job does not permit scheduling more than 4 months out. I have never been able to get a routine appointment scheduled a second time. So off to find a dentist with better availability. I've finally found my dentist! Having been through a few bad ones, I decided to give Dr. Schaeffer a try after reading the good reviews on here. I have not been disappointed. As my dental history would show, I haven't had many issues with my teeth. That is until I met my last dentist who always was finding something wrong. Dr. Schaeffer, however, tells me quite the opposite, in fact telling me I have "BMD" or "Boring Mouth Disease." Why didn't I come here sooner? The office staff and hygentists have all been incredibly nice and welcoming. Filing insurance has never been a problem, in fact the only bad thing I can say is that the traffic at N. Decatur and Clairmont sucks at certain times of the day. So far I've only had regular cleanings, but it's nice to have enough confidence in a doctor to know that if some other treatment was recommended, it's probably actually needed, and not just an excuse to line their pockets. read more

Bedside Manner: Dr. Schaeffer has the absolute best bedside manner I have ever experienced. Great personality, very friendly, willing to explain everything and answer all your questions. Staff: All the staff were extremely polite and nice and it felt genuine. Cost: I had a filling coming apart so they took two xrays, numbed me up, drilled out the bad filling, put in new filling all for $270 without insurance. I'm not sure if that's a fair price or not because I am not familiar with dental prices, but I had no problem paying it. Environment: It's a small business, but it's nice, soothing and very laid back. I think anyone would feel comfortable in his office. Pain: None, I had absolutely no pain from the procedure. I didn't even feel the needle when he numbed me for the procedure, amazingly good at his profession. Kudos and thank you Dr. Schaeffer. Summary: Highly recommended! Dr. Shaeffer is very, very good but EXTREMELY busy. This is where to good ends; the word has gotten out about Dr. Shaeffer so he's overbooked (appointments are MONTHS out), the prices have gone WAY, WAY, WAY UP & some of the help have gotten rather surly (the dental hygienist I saw comes to mind). I have an intense distrust of doctors and dread of needles, so I consider myself very fortunate to have Dr. Schaeffer around. I sum him up with two words: no pain. I've been using his services for about four years now. Even with big gaps between visits, he remembers my previous dental work. Best experience EVER!!!! I went a little over 2 years ago while pregnant, to get a cleaning and the staff was extremely friendly. This led me to return,unfortunately almost 2 years later due to my busy schedule. However, I went in yesterday and they remembered me from 2 years ago. I told them I was on lunch and needed to be back within an hour , I made it back to work 10 minutes early. I was extremely impressed. I have been blessed with good, straight teeth so far. My interactions with dentists have generally been the same. They come in following the hygienist, glance at the chart, make some small talk, recommend flossing more, and forget me until six months later. So, I never felt I had enough material to write a Yelp review for one. Well, that recently changed! I was in a car accident and had a very tender tooth. I was in the office the next day after calling that morning, and Dr. Schaeffer took his time to do a full examination of the jaw and tooth including x-rays. He then referred me to a great oral surgeon and had his staff do some serious sweet talking to get me in that same day. He had great bedside manner and kept me calm throughout the process. Plus, he admitted his ignorance, a rare sight from doctors, which I enormously appreciated. Excellent! Well, not excellent, because my jaw was broken. But, excellence in care! I then realized that my insurance had changed between my cleaning appointment that Thursday and my emergency appointment that Monday. As you can imagine, this can wreak havoc on an automated billing system. I called two days after the appointment, and they handled the change in insurance nimbly in a few minutes. I just moved to town, and in the midst of setting up my life, came to Blue Creek at the referral of a friend for a second opinion after feeling not quite right with the recommendations coming from the first dentist I saw, who I felt was too aggressive and purely recommending interventions for the sake of recommending interventions. I don't have the best dental history (thank genetics), but because of that, I have seen dentists many times and like to think that I have a good idea of what I've got going on. Reviewers rave about Dr. Shaeffer, and for great reason. He was patient, comprehensive, and took time to explain to me the recommendations from the other dentist vs his own recommendations. He worked with me to prioritize what treatments I needed in terms of urgency. His office manager was very helpful in navigating my insurance. Overall highly recommend! Great service. My wife and I went here for a long over due dental check up and we both were impressed. The lobby was nice and clean and the receptionist was very nice and helpful and everyone seemed to be in a good mood. The Dentist was much more helpful then others I've gone to and even made suggestions that would save us money and didn't just try put money in his pocket. The x-ray machine impressed me as well. They show you the x-rays immediately on a TV screen and zoom in to give you the detailed images and problem areas in real-time while you're still sitting. Best dentist ever! As soon as you walk in the door the staff is nice and the waiting area is really calming. The cleaning rooms are nice with your own personal flat screen TV that you can watch whatever you like on while they clean your teeth. When Dr. Schaffer comes in, you never have to wait on your x-rays because they're all digital and you can see them on the flat screen TV!! I've never had to wait along time. Dr. Schaffer is never rushed and always answered all of my questions thoughtfully. I had my teeth whitened there and he's the only dentist I ever trusted to do cosmetic work on my teeth. Disappointed with staff services. Horrific experience with booking an appointment or getting a return phone call. I was told to expect a call back twice because the front desk was too busy to schedule my appointment. I followed up three times and left three separate messages requesting a call back. When I finally got through, the front desk hung up. I called back and the front desk placed me on hold for 7 minutes then came back to tell me that she was running around and the first appointment is 3/30 (45 days later). The staff is so helpful in making appointments, and even calls if an earlier appointment becomes available. Dr. Shaeffer is incredibly knowledgeable and personable. Not only did he do the cleaning, but he took to time to make sure I was comfortable. He is very understanding and truthful about necessary procedures. When I needed my wisdom teeth removed, he gave me an honest time frame in which to get them taken care of as well as a personal referral to a great oral surgeon. The interior of the office is warm and inviting. The staff was professional; the hygienist was very knowledgeable. My consultation with the dentist was very informative, and he reviewed my x-rays with me. There was no pressure to recommend unneeded services, which was great. Overall, I had a very pleasant experience with Blue Creek. I will continue to use them as my dentist. I also, recommended my boyfriend to them. However, he had not been to a dentist in years, so his experience was quite different than mine - but that is what happens when you wait 10 yrs to visit a dentist. I've been to the same dentist all my life and was forced to try someone new due to insurance. I saw he had good reviews so I was confident things would go alright. The staff were friendly enough. I am 27 and have had 1 cavity my whole life, he told me that I had THREE. He was ready to set me up an appointment to drill into my mouth and have them filled. I use Yelp a fair amount for everything from restaurants to car repair. When it came time to leave my dentist office of 28 years, I wanted to make sure I chose the right replacement. I plugged dentist and Atlanta into Yelp and filtered by ratings. When I saw Blue Creek Dental had 26 reviews and ALL of them were five stars, I knew I had to try them for myself. I was not disappointed. I walked in with my family of five just before noon. We all walked out at 1:10pm - teeth cleaned, X-rays taken and paid in full (we don't have dental insurance) for under $500. What?!? The staff was extremely friendly, Dr. Schaffer was outstanding, the service was fast and the cost was reasonable? Why did I ever waste 28 years of my life at that other big-box dentist.
