Very friendly!!!!The Blue Dolphin is downtown near the hospital and Kalamazoo Downtown Mall. Opens at 7am to 9:30pm most days. They have Mimosas ready for shift nurses getting off at 7am. My friend from the mill said they had cold beer ready too. Great food all day long at really good prices. I got a great gyro meal and 2 beers for $17.76 In the evening about 8pm. The Blue Dolphin is one of my favorite downtown restaurants. My husband and I eat out all the time and we keep coming back, not just for the food which is excellent but because of how the Stamos family gives back to the community. When I'm just too tired to cook we walk over and are always greeted by cheerful servers. My go to items are the Greek Salad with Greek dressing, traditional and delicious in every sense! My other favorites are the avgolemono soup, and Mousska. My husband will go for the Pork Souvlaki (I steal a few bites), any of the burgers, the incredible homemade specials and his favorite saganaki. The Dolphin's breakfast can't be beat on quality, price or quantity. My favorite breakfast omelet (s, feta, tomato and basil) will feed you for two days. For lunch a Gyro will hit the spot. I order their homemade tzatziki with everything; It's the best around! Friday and Saturday's for dinner can be slow unless there is a show downtown so you will want to get there early, but I'm fine with that because the service is twice as fast. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY Even being blind, just by smell I knew I was glutton for punishment. The food was so disgusting and bland that I wouldn't give it to my worst enemy or convicts. The order was entirely messed up. Not a single item was correct. I received the order with tomato sauce all over the bag so it got on my floor. They claim they make homemade baklava, personally, if I made it, I would be embarrassed to admit it. The veal belongs on a $1 menu. It was bland, I am sure they didn't put a drop of salt on it. , It is by far the worst quality meat. if I owned a restaurant & the food was so bad, I would fire the cook. The lemon rice soup was so bland that I had to pour lemon juice in it. This is the first place I have had lemon rice soup where there was no chicken. I wouldn't be surprised if it came out of a can. I would be surprised if everything didn't come pre-cooked and threw in a microwave to cook. I rate them as an F minus * if you plan on buying your food there. I'm sorry but I don't get the hype about this place. Not here nor Google reviews. My experience with my family was awful. Service was slow even though the place was empty. Waitresses were complaining about management (I don't blame them though). And they food was so bad. It was my first time ever sending back a plate. We ordered: -gyro appetizer platter -lamb chops -chicken skewers (forgot the menu name) (side of green beans, salad, and rice pilaf) -chicken fingers for my kids -musaka -hummus Salad-- I wouldn't know how it tastes because our waitress never brought it out. And because we were so distracted with the bad food we forgot to ask for it. Musaka--same with this. We never received it. Now I am wondering if we were charged for it or not. Gyro meat was good. Best tasting thing we ordered. Gyro sauce was not. You could tell it was old. Lamb chops were dry and tough--clearly frozen. There was no salt on them whatsoever and they came out burned. Chicken skewers were dry and bland. The rice pilaf that came with it was clearly an old batch. In my scoop of rice, half of it was dry and crunchy. I had to send back my entire plate. Green beans--I thought we were getting steamed green beans. Didn't realize it'd be green beans in a tomato sauce; this isn't clarified on the menu and the waitress didn't describe it as such. Sorry but no flavor. Chicken fingers and fries....whatever. you can't mess up frozen food can you? Hummus: you cannot convince me otherwise--it came out of a can. It was grainy and so thick. Service: kind service doesn't mean good service. Waitresses were very kind but they were very slow and forgot a quarter of our order. Our waitress complained or gave excuses from the kitchen for mistakes. Owner was "kind." From what I heard the waitress say, he's actually the owner's son. He took my plate away and removed it from my bill but there was no accountability whatsoever. He didn't apologize for the mistake. Just said "okay" and took my plate. Cool beans. But that to me is NOT four-star or even three-star quality service. Pricing was decent. After my order wasn't taken off the bill we came out But 40 dollars but I think that's because we were charged for musaka when we never received it. Solid gyros. The ambiance isn't great and parking can be a nightmare, but I'm still reeled back in by those solid gyros. I like the moussaka as well and their spanakopita is also pretty noteworthy. I'm not a huge fan of the canned veggies you get when you order an entree, but the food more than makes up for it. We stopped in for lunch and, as usual, the food was great! Our waiter, Jake, was very friendly and very helpful. We ordered combination plates of moussaka, pastitsio, and gyro. My only critique would be that we've ordered moussaka and pastitsio in the past at Blue Dolphin and they were accompanied with lots of sauce and thicker layers of béchamel -which is more similar to the plates we had while we were in Greece. I prefer it with more sauce and béchamel, but it was still very delicious and perhaps it was an "off" day. We had our dessert boxed up to go. We got baklava and cheesecake. The side of the baklava was a little burned beyond caramelization and seemed to be lacking baklava's honey-dripping sweetness. Although it doesn't seem like "traditional" baklava, it was still good and I will order it again. It has an interesting flavor profile that is appealing -not sticky sweet with honey, but instead, focused on deducing your tastebuds with sweet hints of ginger and warmer spices. The star of today's visit were the gyros and our super friendly waiter, Jake. The gyros were solid and delicious -the vegetables very fresh, bright, and firm. If you have lived in Kalamazoo much of your life and haven't heard of Blue Dolphin I wouldn't be shocked. This is a great Greek, Mediterranean restaraunt slightly off the main drag and hustle and bustle of downtown Kalamazoo. This family owned business is a place where many regulars thrive but is very welcoming of newcomers as well. The interior is a bit dated but simply adds to the charm of the place. If you work nights you absoutely HAVE to join them for breakfast and a cocktail when they open at 7am. You will not be dissapointed. You also will not walk away hungry or... after a cocktail or two... unhappy! Their food is incredibly reasonably priced and comes out very fast. Their staff is always attentive, friendly and knowledgable. Their bartender Laura is one of the best people I have met. Her Bloody Mary's and Rum Punches are mind blowing but you will like any of her cocktails. I have not had any of their Greek or Mediterranean food but their breakfasts are delicious! They always have specials on the board and a great menu of fresh options. My regret so far is that I have not tried Blue Dolphin for lunch or dinner. If you want super chic and fancy you will find other places downtown. If you want great tasting inexpensive food, great cocktails and friendly staff be sure to stop into Blue Dolphin. read more

This place was terrible. I went here with my cousin and his girlfriend. A bored-looking waitress took our order, then left us alone for 45 minutes. It wasn't until we went looking for her that she started to cook the food. (There wasn't a cook around, for whatever reason.) By the time she brought out our food, the eggs and waffles were cold. Also, I had asked for no toast (I have a gluten allergy) and the plate was brought out with toast. When I reminded her, instead of apologizing, she snatched the plate back, picked up the toast, and slammed the plate back on the table. Charming! After waiting an hour to get cold breakfast, I complained to the manager. His response? He wasn't working when our order was first taken! If I could give this place no stars, I would. This is a Greek restaurant with a good variety of items on the menu. Shockingly, the spinach pie has no cheese! But it is still good. The food was tasty, overall. However, the service was very slow. It took a long time for us to be seated and the waitress didn't check on us very often to refill water and get our check. The decor was a bit lacking as well. So I wasn't feeling well so I had my husband go get me some food we got two orange juices for me and the kids and we got country fried steak potatoes and eggs the steak was gritty overcooked The orange juice was sour as if they did not check the date the potatoes were still raw and the eggs were over cooked so all in all they received a zero from me after trying to poison me with orange juice under cooking my potatoes over cooking my eggs read more

I've eaten here a few times over the years and it's really hard to put into words what this place is like. So I'll try and keep it simple. First, don't judge this place by how it looks or by how empty it seems to be. Every time I've eaten here, it was almost empty. We're talking Friday & Saturday nights. The staff is hit or miss sometimes, but honestly, that's not why you eat here. Every dish I've tried has been amazing. You get sooo much food for your money and I usually have enough to bring home for another complete meal. My first time here, my friend and I sat at a booth by ourselves (we were pretty much the only people, besides one other couple), by the time they were done bringing our food out, there wasn't any room left for another single thing. It just kept coming, and coming... The next time I came, I literally had to bribe a group of friends to give it a try. Everyone was super skeptical, until the food started to arrive. The look on their faces seeing the vast amount of food they had ordered was amazing. Everyone was trying everyone else's dish, they were loving every second of it. If you're looking to go somewhere different , and can hold off judgement until the food arrives, you shouldn't be disappointed. But if you are, at least you won't be out much money. read more

Maybe it was just a slow day but when my friend and I went (we aren't from Kalamazoo), we were probably the only two customers in the restaurant. It felt a little strange, but it wasn't a big deal. The gyros we ordered didn't take long to get to us. It came ready for us to put together, and you get enough fries that you probably won't be able to fit many into the gyro if that's how you're used to it, so it's a good sized side. The taste was great, you definitely get good value for your money. If the place didn't feel so deserted and maybe if it looked a little cleaner, I'd have no problem giving it 5 stars for the kind of restaurant that it is. We ate here once years ago, and decided to come back. Now we remember why we hadn't been back. The restaurant smells stale and unclean the moment you walk in. Our booth was still littered with crumbs. The table next to us was set up to roll napkins and silverware, but was sloppy and unkempt, with no one there. There was a guitarist setting up to play, and someone at a nearby table kept shouting at him about guitars, strings, frets, blah, blah, blah. It made conversation at our own table nearly impossible. So how was the food, you ask? Awful. We started with the saganaki, which barely flamed, and then had a heavy alcohol aftertaste because the waiter doused the flame too soon. My "Greek" salad was wilted iceberg lettuce with mealy tomatoes, three kalamatas, a sprinkle of feta, and ranch dressing. Then I had spinach lasagne, the special, which I think was on special because it was a day old, dry around the edges, and they covered up the day-oldness with some disgusting brown gravy. Yes. Gravy. On lasagne. My husband had a chicken gyro, which was a pita with chicken. No lettuce, no tomato. Tzatziki came in a cup on the side. He said it was so garlic heavy that it was inedible. When we asked for the bill, our waitress disappeared for ten minutes. If the atmosphere is bad, but food and service are good, you can forgive. Or if you get great service, mediocre food is acceptable when you really want a gyro. But here you get zero for three. read more

Started out by having to walk over a discarded rubber (yes, a rubber) right outside the door. That should have been a "sign"! No filet. No lobster tail. Not crossed off menu. Our "prime" rib was less than 1/2" and way beyond med-rare. Had to get our own silverware off a nearby table and got our salads after dinner (after reminding our waitress). We had eaten here several times years ago and enjoyed the Greek food, good service and generous portions. Who could resist the flaming cheese - OPA! Unfortunately, this restaurant has not aged well. Our drink order was difficult for them to fulfill due to lack of ingredients and a trained bartender. After studying the menu and choosing our entrees, we were told two of the three were no longer "on the menu." Clearly they were still listed on the menu - but we were nicely informed that new menus had not arrived from the printer. Our waitress, though trying hard, had to check with another waiter each time we asked a question about an entree (what is the stuffed flounder stuffed with?). She admitted to being new, but it seems she did not have any training. I believe this restaurant is owned by a lovely local family that does a lot for Kalamazoo and it is my hope that they give the Blue Dolphin some attention and either reinvent or restore it to it's former glory. read more

Great food and exceptional service! I've mostly eaten the pizza here, and it's well priced and very good. I also come out on the weekend sometimes for Latin dancing, which is always a great time. The decor is pretty dated and its kind of dark and dingy inside. Also there are numerous differences between what is actually offered versus what is listed in the menu. However, the prices are very reasonable and the food was really good. I had the calamari which was good and the gyro. Can I get a slice of fried goat cheese, lit on fire with a sort of white rum and doused out with freshly squeezed lemon juice? OPA! Please sir can I have another? It is AMAZING. If I lived within walking distance, I'd need a rascal...cause, yes, I would eat Saganaki 24/7 and make Gilbert Grape's mom look like Calista Flockhart. I have to say that I was not as charmed as I'd hoped I would be after my first visit at this much talked about eatery. Although the service was wonderful, I found the food to be mediocre. Feeling adventurous, I ordered the combination plate so I could try three of the restaurant's spotlight dishes: Mousaka (sautéed eggplant and potato, layered with ground beef, and topped with a light braise sauce), dolmades (grape leans rolled with ground beef and rice and seasoning, topped with a lemon sauce), and roast leg of lamb (carved off the bone, topped with béchamel sauce). These were served with rice and green beans that I considered overcooked and reminded me of what you'd find in a buffet line. I did enjoy the dolmades quite a bit; it was very well seasoned without being overpowering. The mousaka was just OK. Perhaps it would have been better if it wasn't so similar to the dolmades and I'd just ordered one or the other, or if the uninspiring sauce had been different. This same sauce dressed the leg of lamb, which was decent but not as tender as I'd have liked. Hubby ordered the veal parmesan which he surprisingly enjoyed. I was quite put off by the overcooked pasta and generic sauce reminiscent of Chef Boyardee. I'm willing to give the place one more shot but I won't exactly jump at the chance. read more

However, when I was interning for an agency they held their Christmas party at the Blue Dolphin. I sampled numerous items from the menu and was thoroughly impressed. I went to the Blue Dolphin Tuesday night, October 20th,2015. I hadn't been there in a long time and have always enjoyed it. Our service waiter was not attentive or intuitive. Refills on drinks were not an option until we waived him down from the other side of the restaurant where he was standing. The chicken noodle soup was not ready at 6:30 and after 30 minutes was super salty. Entrees were cold. Waited forever for the check. They were not that busy. Blue dolphin is loved in the community and I just hope they can raise the bar on quality food and service. read more

I hate to give this review because the food is so good. Service was horrible. Stacy (I think) was our server. We ordered The flaming cheese and it didn't come with any bread or pita. Which normally comes with that. My daughter ordered the combination plate which states it comes with soup and salad and bread but she didn't get soup or salad. The server said that it didn't come with that. Menu states otherwise. I ordered a Greek salad with gyro meat. My salad came with no gyro meat. She brought it a little later. I asked could I have some pita bread as the menu says comes with pita points she said oh did I forget and left. Never came back with my pita bread. It was not that busy either. Blue Dolphin is my Go To place for a good, quick, inexpensive lunch. Lunch can get busy but you can almost always get in and out in way less and an hour for under $10 with a tip. I haven't had anything bad, but my usual choices are the Patty Melt (2nd best in Kalamazoo), Steak Sandwich, French Dip and The Monte Cristo...most of which are only $5.83 with tax...a seriously good value. read more

Absolutely one of the worst meals I have ever had. We choose this place based on its menu, only to find out that there are many items on the menu they no longer serve. Service was a joke, we had to remind her to bring our salads after she had brought our meal had to get up to get our own silverware. The ambiance was like that of a fast food place. My uncle and I headed up to this place a couple weeks back for the very first time, and after about an hour or so, we had decided that our first would also be our last. We came here, having heard that it served chicken fried steak. We came in, got seated, and had our orders taken by a mid- 50 year old lady. Throughout the whole conversation, there was a lack of eye contact and there wasn't even a sliver of a smile on her face. A few minutes later, two other parties - one, a family and the other, two ladies - came in, got seated, and also had their orders taken. The same waitress took their order, but this time, a wide smile embroidered her face and she took her time to make extended eye contact with each of the people in both parties. In about ten minutes, the waitress brought out the food, and one by one, the other two parties that came in after us, had gotten their food first. Take into mind, that my uncle and I were Asian; and the two other parties were all white. We waited for another thirty minutes - making that a total of 40 minutes of wait time - before our food came out. (Also take into mind that there were only about 6 tables occupied - 5 of which had already gotten their food - so there is no excuse why the wait time should even surpass 10 minutes) The waitress offered us a free drink as an apology for the long wait; her excuse was that she put the order "on the wrong side of the spindle". It was a coincidence how we were made to wait until both of the other parties were served fully and well before we were even spared a glance. Her apology was one of the most artificial and hollow apology I have ever heard come from the mouth of a full grown adult. Her tone was full of apathy, and there was a blatant lack of kindness and respect. When we did make eye contact with the waitress, her eyes were full of contempt, and the unwillingness to interact with us was especially strong. In addition, her excuse was just as absurd! Although this could have been a rather conveniently coincidental mistake, as a server, you must have a sense of awareness and responsibility - something in which she very much lacked or feigned lacking. As a waiter, you have the responsibility to care for and tend to each and every guest that walks in that front door; you should be able to make every person feel comfortable and willing to pay you for your services. When you decide to work at a restaurant, you have to accept the fact that you have to serve everybody with the same kind and respectful attitude, no matter who they are or what their ethnicity is. Apparently, the server in this restaurant didn't get the memo. So, here we are, being served with some racial inequality and discrimination, with a side of disrespect. This is the type of "cuisine" Blue Dolphin served to us and I highly recommend you don't come to this place. read more

The Blue Dolphin is a nice little Greek-American restaurant located in downtown Kalamazoo. The interior of the restaurant is clean and the blue and white color scheme is pleasing to the eyes. However, if you have a dolphin phobia, you may want to stay away. The menu is varied, and the prices are very reasonable. The portions are also satisfying. They have very good liver and onions and mousaka. Still, while the food is good, it's nothing really remarkable. It's a nice quite place to eat, but that might be a little unnerving. It's often really quite; I've never seen the place busy, and there were only one or two other tables occupied during my last visit. Also, the staff is neither good nor bad. They seem to mix things up somewhat often, but they are quick to correct their mistakes. If you're in Kalamazoo and you want some fairly standard Greek-American food, I think that this is a good option. read more
