Came in two times when they should have been open, and they were closed. No note as to why. Finally stopped by one time when they were open (Hallelujah), and they said it would take two weeks (my dad's bday was in a week and that was what I needed it framed for) to frame a simple picture in a frame. Not even a custom frame. Just a frame I already had. Plus, it was gonna be some crazy 200+ price. Hard pass. Even though I showed up on the hottest day of the year, when her equipment was malfunctioning because of the heat with deadlines stacking up left and right, shop owner Pepper seemed prepared to give me unlimited time and attention to help me through the process. By contrast, I could actually hear the eye-rolling impatience over the phone from the other shops I called when they realized I was a novice. Two days before Christmas I finally figured out what to get my boyfriend: frame the signed record of a band he loves. I called up Blue Dot and was told that they are completely booked out for projects and cannot do it. I was disappointed and just about to start calling around when I get a phone call... I have not had the opportunity to work with other picture framing shops, however my experience with Jay at Blue Dot was great! My wife and I won a local marathon here in December and wanted to have a special frame to remember the occasion. It was a unique job, requiring a shadow box of several photos, newspaper clipping and two heavy medals to be placed artistically. OK, so I found this unusually sized, wide photo taken in the thirties, my mother's graduating class in Brooklyn - so evocative of a whole era. It was all rolled up and beginning to crack. It was so important to me to save the photo and frame it to put it up in my house so it would look good. I get this flyer in the mail - a new framing business in San Rafael, so I go up there - they had just moved from the East Bay. I wait and see the owner working with a visual artist, for whom he was handling the framing of her original artwork for a big art show. I'm impressed. It's my turn and I show Jay, the owner, the photo, show him which one is my mother, how important it is to me to preserve the photo. He totally gets it. I'm on a tight budget. He totally gets that, too. A week later, the photo is on my wall, safe, beautifully framed, perfect. This man is an artist, himself, and really cares about the work he does. It is custom framing, but with lots of choices of price range, lots of personal attention, an artist's eye, and a relationship of caring. I brought in an original portrait done in charcoal to be framed. I was drawn to Blue Dot after reading the great reviews regarding price, service, and Jay's artistry. The custom framing was breathtaking, and Jay went above and beyond what was expected. His advice about the color and size of the matte, frame and glass was perfect, and he detached it from the backing, which I did not realize was not archival and could have ruined the portrait. He also sprayed a special sealant over the charcoal, which he later explained prevented the charcoal from sloughing off onto the off-white matte. Knowing it was a birthday gift, Jay had it ready in no time. He did not charge for the extra work that he had to do, nor the rush job. (Another shop wanted to charge me more, and would have had me wait a month!) Jay knows what he's doing! You are in good hands with Jay! read more

I took a lithograph in to have it framed and Jay had some great suggestions. Since it was a screen print, he suggested NOT having the plexi touch the image. He put in spacers allowing the plexi to sit above the print. I mentioned that it was a gift for my wife for Valentine's day (which was only about 5 days away).
