So far everything we've tried here has been great. We live in the area so we eat here often. Fish and chips is our favorite along with Fridays- fish night! Ordered a prime rib French dip and a chicken pesto sandwich to split... the chicken pesto sandwiched said "smashed" so I assumed it would be thin and delicious, easy to eat. It had super thick slices of toast, hard to eat, floppy fatty bacon, and almost no pesto flavor. Super meh. The prime rib dip had no flavor whatsoever. Even the au jus was bland. If you want one with lots of flavor, the cabinet bar and grille in Clark fork has a really good one. read more

Food is good. Service generally very good. Have to ask to have fries served fresh up to have them served hot. The fish and chips is one of our favorite lunch items there. Fish filets have always been served piping hot, without asking. The dirty fries are pretty good too. Can't get kickback points any more. This place truly checked all our boxes. We wanted tasty breakfast with a nice view and were striking out in Sandpoint. We opted for the 15 minute drive north and found this gem hidden in the back of a gas station. The portions were generous with good flavors, service was quick, and even on a rainy day the scenery looked lovely. Definitely would like to come back for a sunny bite on the patio! This is a "non-review". We are traveling in the area and looking for a place to stop for a late breakfast. We were thrilled with the pictures of food and patio, so drove out of our way to make a stop. My husband went in first to check out the seating, hoping we could bring our dog with us as it was very warm that day and we didn't want to leave him in the vehicle. The only way to the restaurant is through the store, so non-service animals are not allowed. My husband spoke with a gentleman who said that they could not accommodate us allowing dogs would just create a mess, and even suggested that no other restaurants allow non-service dogs on their patio. Wow. Almost every restaurant with a patio that we've encountered allows dogs. And that's a lot of restaurants! So we turned around and went to another restaurant that did allow our dog to join us. read more

updated post covid. 2022 the BH is a great little stop along hiway 95N. convenience store/gas station with the small restaurant in the back. Outside seating is really nice when the weather is nice. Enjoy the amazing views of the lake and mountains and have some good diner food. it is one of our a local favorite stops. Give blue heron a try if you are traveling through or are local. Pros- good food. Good basic menu. Nice outdoor seating patio. Horseshoe pit, music stage, views of a lake, mountains. This was a wonderful surprise find via Yelp in an unfamiliar area where we were passing through. The outside looked a bit gas station like but we were pleasantly surprised. The choice of food and quality of the dishes was fantastic. We decided to take a table outside behind the building that came with a gorgeous view. Pretty average breakfast place despite the raving reviews. They brought out the wrong meal for me, ended up getting it fixed but was about a 10 minute delay. Meat omelette and dirty bird were solid, chicken and waffles breakfast special was terrible, waffles were among the worst I've ever had. Also worth noting prices have gone up substantially from any menu you find / see online. Will likely try again, but wasn't as special as I'd hoped. read more

Ok so this restaurant is inside of a gas station so who would think they would have the best cheeseburgers known to mankind. Not me but they do. The flavor of the meat is so good and they chargrill it just right so you get that off the bbq flavor with every bite. It comes with sliced tomato, lettuce, American cheese, thin sliced red onions, pickles and mayo. Served with French fries, sweet potatoes fries or onion rings. You can get it to go or dine in. They have a small restaurant with a nice view of the water from the huge window. They also have a patio for outside seating. They have clean restrooms inside also. They have sandwiches, salads, meats and other items on the menu too. They also have souvenirs and all the basic gas stations items too. read more

The Blue Heron is inside the Samuels Conoco about 20 minutes north of Sandpoint. While I'm normally a little wary about eating in cafes and diners that are attached to gas stations, having had some scary experiences with it, it's also true that those little places can offer some of the best comfort food around. Breakfast at the Heron is indisputably great. They serve it all day and it's just really good food. Since we live fairly nearby, I'm pretty sure we've tried nearly every breakfast item on the menu, and all were delicious. Everything tastes very fresh and is cooked quickly and expertly, just what you want from a diner. Lunch...not so much. In fact I can't really think of a lunch menu item we ordered there that wasn't kind of awful. The Philly cheese steak stands out in my memory as particularly bad, as well as the battered chicken fingers (the batter was flavorless and unsalted, literally just flour-flavored). Actually, the reuben we had there once was pretty good--but overall, I just stick to breakfast. Anyway, I'm giving this place four stars because the prices are fair and the breakfast is awesome and the service is great and the view from the dining room is very pleasant. They even have ample outdoor seating on a large patio with a water feature, bistro tables, and fabulous views of fields, a pond, and the mountains beyond. Just know that breakfast is probably your best bet. read more

A cafe in the back of a gas station/convenience store? YES! We had a wonderful experience at Blue Heron Cafe. The food was absolutely delicious and the service friendly and exceptional! My husband had a Buffalo Chicken Sandwich with fries - fries were especially tasty and crispy. I had a BYO Burger that was cooked perfectly - med rare in the middle but with a bit of a crust on the outside, seasoned well, and very tasty; served with a very fresh side salad. Well, decided to stop by here today and see what the food scene had going on. The Cafe is not what you would think if you only noticed the gas station exterior. The Cafe is nicely decorated and has a great view of a lake and distant fields. Menu had many delicious choices and upon arrival, the food did NOT disappoint. The server was nice but not overly friendly. I plan on going back to try the pastrami sandwich they have. All and all. This place is a good spot to have a meal and fellowship with the people you dine with. read more

Within the past month, they changed their menu, totally deleted some of the tastiest and unique menu items, and switched to cheap and lower quality ingredients--and boy, is it obvious! The fish and fries (which used to be light and crisp) are now both heavy with a weird-tasting grease. The "fish" had very little fish (but lots of breading). Almost every menu item now contains bacon-- a trick restaurants use to compensate for lack of originality and to cover for lack of taste. Everything on the menu now starts at about $14.00--expensive for the mediocre fare served here. In the past, the menu and meals ROCKED--but, no longer. It's not the fault of the cook (they can only use the resources and constraints given them). We won't be going back. read more

We had lunch there at about 2 on a Saturday,,,Prime rib looked great on a spit near the kitchen. We ordered prime rib sandwich, it was ok,,nothing special. I substituted soup for fries xx 1.50, soup was like gravy with a few pieces of meat and vegetables. Husband had pastrami sandwich, very good. Kids had shrimp tacos, ok.... kind of small portion. other son had a patty melt...it was ok,,,just nothing special. Prices about $11, 12 for sandwiches. Service was definitely lacking....only 2 booths occupied, so not busy, waitress talked to other booth while our food sat. Not friendly at all. I over tipped,,about 25%,,,its the pandemic,,,feel bad for servers....but she was lacking for sure. Would like to try again, maybe the prime rib dinner,,,,other reviews are so good. read more
