My 73rd birthday was yesterday, and I was asked where I would like to go out for dinner. There are very few places to enjoy out for a nice steak dinner here in Sandpoint anymore, but I have always like The Hydra. So, I chose to come here. I have been here several times and usually have the seafood fettuccini, but this time I went for the prime rib. It was, without a doubt, the best I have ever had. I used to own a restaurant in Montana and served prime rib every Saturday night as a special, and people loved it! But this one beat even my own. The portion size with the fresh green beans and nice sized baked potato was great, and my medium rare prime rib was cooked to perfection. Out server Kay, was very attentive to everything we could have wanted. It was one of the best restaurant experiences I have had. We don't go out to eat very often, as the cost is so high anymore and not many places are even open in the evenings for dinner around here. We love this place! We visit our friends in spirit lake every year and we get on their pontoon boat and come to Sandpoint to Hydra for our annual "dinner cruise". I'll take this over anywhere else we've eaten there. Great food great service. The beef is expensive but worth it (beef is high in general so it's not limited to this). read more

Came here with family for an early dinner. It's a quaint place that has a homestyle feel. Lots of nooks and crannies to sit. Seems good for a variety of size groups. The ladies that seated us and served us were friendly. Got the seafood fettuccine and peppercorn steak. Big portions. My seafood fettuccine was quite bland and the sauce was thin. It didn't stick to the pasta nor the seafood. Although there was plenty of seafood in the dish. Just wish there was a little more flavor and cream. The steak I felt was tough. And for me a steakhouse should have their steaks melting in your mouth. For the price, will not want to go back. read more

We spent the weekend in Sandpoint for our 35 anniversary. Went here for our celebration night out. Great choice by chance. We did not know about this little gem. Very unique inside with lots of tucked away booths and cubby's. Nice friendly service. Lots to choose from on the menu. We had the tenderloin ( which was huge) with seafood medley (on the special menu). Came with choice of potato and a huge pile of yummy green beans. Lots of food. You won't go hungry. To top it off our server brought us a complimentary mud pie dessert in celebration of our anniversary. It was huge!!! And delicious too. This is my first time coming here and I'm not disappointed. I came here with people telling me this was one of the main places in Idaho so I was excited so I get there and it is incredible service. The guy asked me when I'm ready gives me all the time I need and his service was incredible so I get the 1/2 pound bacon burger with lettuce and it was the best burger I had in my life i've never ate a burger so good, and the fries are perfectly salted with just a little ketchup. They became perfect. And this place is so cool. I had to tour it. I left completely satisfied and I still had fries left over that I could eat for lunch. Overall this was incredible. read more

Confused by the five-star reviews of this place. This was our second time here (we gave it another chance) and our last. Our booth had holes in the fabric and was next to the cobweb-decorated window where we froze our butts off right under the A/C. When we complained they said "sorry, we know this is the coldest booth in the restaurant." No offer to move us. Cobwebs on all of the window corners like it hasn't been cleaned in months - the pic does NOT do it justice. Gross! My $54 (approx 1 inch thick) filet mignon came medium instead of medium-rare, and my mom's top sirloin, which she ordered "medium", came medium-rare. We were both disappointed. A steak house should do this one thing right (especially at 5 p.m. - not even a busy hour.) I have to point out the price of the filet, because at Ruth's Chris, a "real" top steak house, they charge $54 for the same size filet in a nicer, cleaner environment with much better food! Customer service was subpar, as empty salad dishes were still on the table when the dinner plates were dropped and we waited for drink refills. I've never felt the need to write a review until now. Last night was the absolute worst steak my wife and I have ever had in our life. We have been to many, many steakhouses. Unfortunately, we were having dinner there for our 30th anniversary. She ordered the filet mignon and I ordered the peppercorn New York. Both were ordered medium, and they both came out well done, like leather. Mine had one hint of redness in one spot, so I decided to go ahead and eat it. Her filet was $57, and there was no way I was going to pay that for leather. We sent it back, and by the time I had finished what I was going to eat of mine, hers came back out. This time the center was basically raw, and the outer surface was again overdone, like leather. I don't know how anyone can possibly cook a steak this bad. It would take a lot of effort. I don't know if it was because it was Memorial Day and the regular cooks were off. Let's hope that's the case, but I'm definitely not giving them another chance. I dropped $150 on the worst steak ever. It'd be one thing if they were selling something else and happened to also make a steak, but in this case they described themselves as a steakhouse. I would definitely not give them your money. By the way, the ambience wasn't great either, and to think we drove quite a ways to get there for that dinner. Two thumbs down. read more

We were in town for a couple days and the Hydra looked promising. The atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly from the moment you step across the threshold. Our server was thoroughly familiar with the wine list and menu. We started with a bottle of Veuve Cliquot. We each enjoyed a Ceasar Salad with the house bread. They were very good. Our main course was ribeye steaks with mashed potato and green beans. Everything was tasty. You can't do better than a good waiter, ice cold champagne and a well- prepared meal. Saturday, July 5th - Party of 5 We had dinner at Hydra Steakhouse and it was an incredible experience from start to finish. We ordered cheese curds for the table and we all had different drinks from the bar-everything was made strong & delicious! Our group ordered two ribeyes, a chicken Oscar, a prime rib royal style and a New York steak--and every single dish was cooked perfectly. Sides were green beans, loaded baked potatos, rice, salad. Steaks& prime rib were seasoned just right and had amazing flavor. The service was excellent, the atmosphere was warm and inviting. We spent about $100/person. It was absolutely worth every penny. We left full, happy, and already looking forward to our next visit. Next time we're in Sandpoint, we'll definitely be back!! Steak knives are old and dull (tried 2) which then doesn't help when your meat is tough and chewy and under seasoned. I was looking for some interesting authentic places in this area, and my choice was Hydra Steakhouse. The waiter recommended me Jalapeño Burger, and that was pretty good, but the bacon was a little bit burnt. Very good quality ingredients, fresh veggies, juice meat, but the French fries were weird. They use something like Doughnut powder, and that may not be to everyone's liking. 6.5/10 Pineapple juice was great, I like that one Good service, i can give strong 8.5/10 for it. We are on a 3 week adventure through the Northwest states. We were starving after a long day of adventures and wanted to try somewhere close to our Air B&Band not a chain, something local. We found The Hydra online and just went with it and hoped for the best. The Hydra is a cute little fancy steakhouse. The inside was lovely. The waiter was fantastic! The food- absolutely delicious. The food here is always so good. The steaks are amazing and some of the best in north Idaho! We travel from Coeur d'Alene just for their steaks. They use tallow to cook their fries! So yummy.
