The leaded glass windows, numerous outdoor sitting areas, the beautifully carved mantle, the Bose iPod station, the cable tv, the numerous movies, the walking distance to absolutely everything in Jerome, and the complimentary Red Rock pass are all great Complimentary coffee The price was reasonable Close to other historic sites - Tuzigoot, Clarkdale Train Depot, 40 min to downtown Sedona The cons: Bed upstairs is really really soft, too soft for me. I sunk in and couldn't roll out. Bed downstairs leans to the left No shower except for outdoor shower No wifi (athough another reviewer borrowed from the b&b next door - wish I had thought of that!) Jerome apparently doesn't open up until after 10 am and pretty much shuts down by 5 pm. I think if you want to stay in Jerome and you would like an historic cottage, this is a nice place. In February we didn't see any bugs, so that wasn't a problem for us. If you arrive late, stop at grocery store on your way in - I think the Cottonwood Safeway is the closest as there are no grocers in Jerome and the restaurants may be closed.

The cottage was built around 1886 and has been restored beautifully !! I have included pictures for you to see of the bottom floor that we rented. There are 2 rooms to rent ( the top & the bottom). Our room consisted of a desk, sitting area, fireplace, handmade rock wall in the bathroom with old fashioned tub, queen size bed, outdoor shower, hot tub (shared with top unit), small fridge, coffee maker, TV (no cable). They do not have wifi , but the owner suggested contacting a neighboring bed and breakfast and asking to use their code and they were more than happy to give it to us. The Good: The place is decorated perfectly for the era and many of the features are hand made and the room has antiques and collectibles throughout. The hot tub was right outside our door and had a beautiful view of the main road and parts of the verde valley. Loved the bathroom and the handmade rocking chairs in front of the fireplace. The owner was very nice ( only conducted business on the phone, she was not at the property). She let us check in at 11am and check out at 12pm for no extra charge. The room cost $150 per night for the bottom unit. The Bad: There were no wash cloths??? Plenty of towels, but no wash cloths. The outside shower was not usable....there were tons and tons of spider webs, bugs of all shapes and sizes, and the shower was in a small space, so there was no escaping the bugs...I did not want to use it, and the husband was not having any part in it either. Also no breakfast was included, so the price was a little higher than most in the area that do include breakfast. I think this was in part to the owner normally renting for at least a week. And I can not forget about the bug infestation...I was horrifed all day and had trouble sleeping. In our room ( that I know of) we experienced 2 flying roaches, 4 grounded roaches, a huge centipede, flying ants, beetles, and about 10 different spider species. I was killing spiders all night...it was horrible. I may try the place again, but maybe the upstairs because it does include a full kitchen. It's only a steep, windy 15 min drive from the larger town of Cottonwood, but offers wonderful views and cute charm. I would highly recommend stopping here if you're visiting Central Arizona. The bed was slightly hard and the house is older but breakfast was great. Nancy even accommodated for my Vegan friend. You get your own entrance, living room, bedroom, garden patio and bathroom that sits below their main house. My only complaint was that I got - what I believe to be -altitude sickness because as soon as I went "down the hill" to Cottonwood, I felt significantly better. (5000 elevation to 3300). I've been in higher cities before, but never felt anything like this. A local told me it might have been due to the ghosts! Either way, I had a good time and took some nice photos.

This time we wanted more as it was our two year anniversary AND the Jerome Historic Home Tour. I couldn't find a place but being the most resourceful gal ever, Rach nabbed what had to be one of the last rooms available in town. When we pulled up, I have to admit I didn't know what to expect. Once we got situated inside I realized what a great find Rach had really made. I really liked this B&B had only one guest suite as it has it's own separate entrance and patio that can see all the way to Sedona. B&B's to me always seem a little confined as the rooms are usually a little older and not much space to really relax. Not so at Hillside. I really like the separate living area with its great assortment of historical references on Jerome, (we came for a bit of history and were pretty impressed with what we found). And the back patio, it's quiet and has views that are tough to beat. The owners Nancy and Mike couldn't have been cooler as well. They gave us plenty of ideas for things to do in town and really made the experience that much more enjoyable. Breakfast was filling and delicious and the coffee didn't suck. Although there are a couple other places I am eager to see and stay in Jerome I am really looking forward to the next time I can spend time at Hillside. Oh, be sure to find the book about Ghost Towns. It's big and white and the pages for Jerome are falling out. Worth the find!

The last time that I stayed at the Desert Rose, I had a very unpleasant experience to say the…read moreleast. Sebastian and I agreed that I would be staying in the small bedroom for the month of August and potentially longer. The night of my arrival, I got in late and noticed that there was a person sleeping in the bedroom that was supposed to be mine for the month. I unpacked my things in the room next door because it was available. After unpacking my things the next day, I asked Sebastian about what I believed to be a change of rooms and he let me know that he expected me to change rooms one week into my stay. I explained to him that I would rather have payed more to stay at the room I was in than have to change rooms midway through my stay. After an uncomfortable conversation, he told me I could stay in the room I was already in. That same night, I texted him letting him know that I would no longer be able to stay for the month of September. I let him know that I wanted to give him as much notice as possible. At this point, it was around 10pm at night. Through text, he changed his mind, he wanted me to once again, change rooms. When I informed him that I did not want to change rooms, I could hear him angrily approaching the room I was in. He started loudly banging on the door. This scared me because Sebastian is a bigger guy and I am a small female who was traveling alone. I did not want him to enter, especially because it was so late but felt like I didn't have a choice. When Sebastian barged in, he proceeded to use a very loud tone of voice to tell me that he would call the cops on me if I didn't change my rooms when he desired. He was only in his underwear and closed the door behind him. He stood blocking the door while I was on the bed. This incident terrified me to say the least. I started raising my voice because I wanted the other people in the house to hear what was happening in the scenario it got violent or inappropriate. The next day I called the police to help me get my things out of the house because I was still shaken by the incident. I knew that it wound't be safe for me to continue being in the house. When Sebastian saw the police, he looked at me and told me that he wouldn't be giving me a refund as a result. I had payed Sebastian to stay at the Desert Rose for an entire month, and I left on day 6. I wanted to write a review so that potential customers are aware of the type of business being run at the Desert Rose. Not to mention, the WiFi connection was terrible.

Our first Bed & Breakfast!…read more As this was our first B&B, I can't compare Desert Rose B&B to any other... but I will say, I loved this place! We were greeted at the front door by Nathan and given a tour of the house and property. He was extremely professional and we really enjoyed talking with him and picking his brain for things to do in the area. Sebastien was great as well, via phone, giving us recommendations of local dinner spots and step by step directions when we got close to the B&B. This place is more like a home away from home. Nestled in a small neighborhood in Cottonwood, AZ, this large 5 bedroom home sits on a nice 1.5 acre piece of property and is so centrally located, we couldn't of asked for more! Just minutes away from the Historic Mining Town of Jerome, Down Town Cottonwood, Sedona, local vineyards, Montezuma's Castle & Well... as well as a great stopover location to the Grand Canyon-which we later visited. (about a 2 1/2 hour drive to Grand Canyon South Rim Village) We stayed in the upstairs suite (we nicknamed the Desert Rose). An over sized room with attached full bathroom, walk in double head rain shower, 2 person whirlpool spa tub, small refrigerator, tv/ dvd player and King size bed, which was extremely comfortable and accommodating for our 2 night stay. Additional perk - they provided shampoo, conditioner & body wash, which meant we didn't have to pack it! Whoohoo! Guests have access to the entire house (minus the kitchen) and grounds, which include a small farm with llamas, which they will provide fresh fruit and hay to feed them in the morning, a relaxing water feature on the side of the house, plenty of seating areas throughout the property to enjoy a bottle of wine you may have picked up at a handful of local vineyards, swimming pool & spa (seasonal), small trellis of grapevines and lanterns and large grass area. (although we went in the winter months and everything was bare.. I could imagine how lovely it must be in the spring, summer & fall months). A deluxe continental breakfast is included and the Inn Keeper's, Sebastien & Betty, will make fresh eggs to your likings. There is a variety of cereals, breads, fresh fruit, yogurt, coffee, tea, milk, juice & hot cocoa. However, if you have any special requests, they seem quite accommodating if you just give them a heads up. House also includes: Use of a microwave, which they also provide popcorn for late night snacks. A selection of DVD's, VHS & Books. Use of communal tv's & stereo system. Plenty of seating areas inside and out. Variety of pamphlets, maps & flyers of local attractions, vineyards and things to do. And best of all, the knowledge of the owners! We really truly enjoyed our stay! Betty is a kind lady with tons of fun stories and information. Her and Nathan, her nephew and additional help, made us feel welcome and at home. It was the first time using airbnb but they had great reviews and I did not hestitate about booking with them. Any other place just paled in comparison. We happened to arrive much earlier than check in and they had the room all ready for us. The property is breathtaking and even the amazing pictures do not do it justice. I was in awe at the level of hospitality and comfort Nancy and Jerry put into the lovely guest house for us. The refrigerator was stocked with water, soda, milk and juice as well as breakfast items including eggs, bagels, cream cheese, butter, fresh fruit, granola bars and coffee. I wish we had more time to just stay and relax at their home but we took advantage of having breakfast right outside on the patio while watching the sun come up and staring up at the stars in the evening. Jerry gave us some great advice on things we should see in the area and we ate lunch at the Haunted Hamburger in Jerome as he recommended. I cannot say enough great things about their property, the view and overall friendliness but to book a stay with them and you will not regret it. We were immediately greeted by the two sweetest dogs that would periodically check up on us and keep us company. They were so well behaved. Occasionally The cat would also visit. Our host were always available if needed, but allowed all the privacy we wanted. The view of the stars from the upper patio with fireplace and hot tub had to be my favorite experience. The cedar fire had such a pleasant fragrance, and the sounds of wildlife in the area and the views were unspeakable. Even though if feels like your out in the middle of nowhere, there are so many things nearby. I understand why there is a three day minimum stays, you will want to spend more time there to relax and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. No tv is available and that was wonderful.

Wow! If you are anywhere NEAR this area you have to take a ride on this train! Our family drove…read morefrom Tempe to Clarkdale which took about 1.5 hours. It was such a relaxing train ride. 2 hours up and back through the canyon for a total of 4 hours. We saw lots of gorgeous rock formations. Craig was a very knowledge and personable guide as we rode through this canyon. Craig pointed out so many natural formations. He showed us a bear den, mountain lion den. We looked out for river otters but didn't see any. We also saw a beautifully made bald eagle's nest and we did see a bald eagle flying by our train on our way back to the train depot! Craig gave us the history of this railroad which was so interesting. We were able to go outside our train car to the open air seating to have a more "closer to nature" experience. Shine was our bartender! As soon as you walk in the train car you will see a really really nice bar. Shine was super accommodating, friendly and so helpful! Of course it was a really hot day and he said he'd take care of us if we needed any extra water. The car was super comfortable and cool with A/C. As soon as we walked on and sat in our assigned seats, we had a small bottle of champagne and a delicious charcuterie tray for each of us. There is a bathroom in each car. Go early to see the little town before your ride. This is a great trip for Seniors, families, really all ages. It's recommended to go two hours before your train departs but we arrived an hour before and had plenty of time. There is a gift shop and outdoor seating while you're waiting for departure.

There was a big comfort difference between the two types of seating and we weren't told about it in advance. Also, I will point out that none of the living room type seating is located next to the on board toilet, but some of the dining room seats are right next to it. I can tell you there is nothing like a line of six standing next to you while waiting for the WC as you're trying to look at the canyon wall as you eat your lunch.

I did not have any major issues staying here. The room I got was a pet-friendly, 2-queen bedroom which came with a decent size minifridge and microwave. The room was a little dark on the inside, but comfortable. The 2 downsides of pet-friendly rooms is that pet owners are often lumped together, so if people talk too loudly or slam doors, it causes a dog-barking chain reaction. The first night here was BRUTAL because my dog (and other dogs) would and could not stop barking. The second downside was how loud the A/C unit is because my dog could not stop barking at it when it turned on. After the first night, my dog was calm because he knew what to expect from the A/C and the neighbors. The hot breakfast is nothing to write home about...it's the standard eggs, sausage, bread, waffles, yogurt, oatmeal, juice and coffee offerings. The staff stood out though. Everyone was so friendly and helpful! Overall, had a satisfying stay and would recommend to anyone visiting Sedona.
