Finally made it out to Blue Lagoon in Huntsville, Texas. Vis was 10-15ft due to recent rain. 68° at the surface and 64° bottom temp at 25ft. They have an underwater rope course you can use to navigate from one side to the other. The waters color and clarity come from its origin. It was originally a Limestone Rock Quarry. Spring water has filled it up making this a good dive location. Another feature I found to be very cool for instructors is the large underwater decks. These are part of the course and make a great place to perform dive skills without disturbing the silt on the bottom. My dive site had an easy entry and exit. The depth ranges depending on the amount of rain throughout the year. This is a great place to teach new students, practice your skills, or train as a dive team. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Being this was my first time here they answered all of my questions. read more

I have always been curious about this place. Today I finally got the chance to go. I am not a diver so my perspective is limited to swimming. 1. I kept thinking when I was there that the city of Huntsville or some wealthy person should buy this place and fix it up. It has so much potential. Right now it is "rustic". Roads unpaved, covered picnic areas falling apart. It's a shame. 2. The water itself is like lake water. It's ok but not as lovely as pictures seen online. I kept thinking...at least no alligators! The term BLUE lagoon is misleading. 3. I understand that this is primarily a scuba diving place. 4 stars because this place, although absolutely STUNNING, it's catered mostly to scuba divers. The times I've come I make sure to get here at least 2 hours before doors open because if they are at full capacity YOU WILL BE TURNED AWAY. It's about 30 per person to get in but in worth it tbh. Good luck trying to get in as a non-scuba a diver during the summer because the divers get priority booking. The tables are few which I like bc it keeps the place beautiful and allows more privacy to those who get in. You are able to take grills, food, tents, pretty much whatever. Kid friendly. If you're a non-certified scuba diver I recommend to go during the during the week and get there early. Also CHECK THEIR FACEBOOK BEFORE YOU MAKE PLANS to check their availability, dont call bc they'll say there's spots available but they can fill up quick after you call. Good luck! read more

I am so disappointed in this place. It makes me sick to my stomach not only does it cost 600,000 to get certified to get a scuba license but My Son drove over an hour and a half to get there and was supposed to spend the night was willing to sleep in his car because the bungalows or cabins whatever you wanna call them with filthy and disgusting. They haven't been cleaned mold dust And whatever was everywhere not only was he trying to kill spiders so that he would be able to sleep I made him get a new cabin because they were two ladies that I guess refused to have a man sleeping in the big room or whatever it was not sure never been there and never will be to pay over $600 to get a scuba certification is a lot of money to begin with. They don't offer any food or anything. It's a room in a broom that's all it is and the staff sucks. They were nasty and mean, especially comrade who is the chief diver instructor he's a nasty bastard. be very careful at where you're going. I went with my sister for the first time and her car wasn't starting but good thing the staff had jumper cables or we would've spent the night out there, waiting for AAA until the next day. Swimmer review: Very limited spots for swimmers I suggest get there early or on a weekday and still get there before opening. We went on the Monday before the 4th and got there at 9AM and people behind us were being turned away. The staff were really friendly and seen someone explode on them because they got turned away and the staff woman was still polite and apologized to the customer. After our wait we were guided to our spot and we were able to enjoy the lagoon. The spot is away from the others so you're not on top of any other patrons which was great. I would come here again but I'd take a day off during the week to do it. read more

Use a dive shop like Aggieland Scuba for your certification training then go dive at the Blue Lagoon. A lot of new divers are trained here so the bottom gets bounced on a time or two decreasing visibility so get in early for the best visibility. read more

I stumbled upon a picture of the Blue Lagoon on Instagram and HAD to go since it's so close to Houston. I was hesitant after reading several negative reviews, but I'm glad I followed my instinct. The staff/owners ended up being extremely friendly and helpful. For starters, the lagoon doesn't open until 12pm for swimmers on the weekends, so be prepared to wait for several hours. Since it was my first visit, I wasn't as prepared as others for the wait. Lawn chairs and hammocks are ideal, as sitting in the car isn't comfortable once the sun comes up. We were assigned a campsite around 11:00am and made it to the lagoon around 11:30am. If there are spots available, they allow swimmers in early. The roads are pretty rough so drive carefully and slow. It can be confusing navigating to your campsite, but stay on the main road and read the signs. Certain camps have covered picnic areas and portable toilets, but we were assigned a smaller camp site with neither. However, the trees provided shade over the table. As for the water, perfection. I'm not sure how it remains cool with a triple heat index, but I'm glad it does. The translucent water makes you feel like you're in paradise. Just reminiscing makes me want to go back now. I was told by a few regulars that they turn thousands of people away on the weekends. Once the camp sites fill up, the likelihood of one becoming available is rare. Most people spend the entire day at the lagoon, so it's imperative to arrive early. Blue Lagoon is unlike other swimming holes in the region because it's privately owned and regulated. Diving is the priority, so overcrowding will never been an issue, as that would interfere with the courses/training being offered. Don't miss out on this gem! read more

When you have to get some bottom time! When I think water filled quarry near the coastal plain city of Houston, I think strip mined hole in the ground in the middle of a field. Not so at this classic freshwater dive spot just an hour and a half north of Houston. Gorgeous pine trees, limestone and elevation. Plenty of boats on the bottom of Lagoon 2. $15 admission fee. There's Air Phil's who does refills ($8) and gear rental. Bathrooms are portacans, but hey, it is in the middle of nowhere. You can even arrange to camp out over the weekend (talk in advance with the folks there). I just did my open water certification there (a very popular place for training) -- so I'm not quite an expert on this place. But, lots of friends who dive love the place as a good freshwater quickie (I've heard you can get down to 25' in some spots). They do have a winter closure period so visit their website. As a new Houston-based diver looking for some easy weekend training dives, the Blue Lagoon is as good as it gets! After a little over an hour of driving, we enjoyed 20 feet visibility in warm blue water! I called on Thursday before the 4th of July weekend hoping to make a reservation. I spoke to Abby who was very helpful in answering all my questions and multiple phone calls, and I was able to reserve a great spot (Main Beach, shelter 2) for Saturday. We arrive around 9:15 AM and saw that the line of non-divers was already forming. I would like to thank the Blue Lagoon staff for giving divers preference here, because if this area became a free-for-all swimming hole, we would NOT have clear waters and trash-free shores we enjoyed. Also, as a diver, we do inevitably have to leave valuable equipment on shore when we go underwater for 45 minutes, and since the Blue Lagoon isn't overrun with guests, I feel safe here. We were there on a busy weekend, and in the early afternoon, more people did start to show up, so I took that as our queue to leave. We did one long dive in the morning, and were ready to depart by 1 PM. There were other divers and groups of swimmers circling like vultures to get our shelter space. When we checked out, the woman at the desk seemed really pleased that we were vacating the shelter space and said she'd go down there to assign it to the group with preference. Technically we could have stayed there allllll day long since I had the reservation, but since the spaces are so coveted, I'd offer a $5 refund per person if you vacate your shelter space by noon. If coming from Houston, I wouldn't rent gear from the Blue Lagoon, as it's significantly more expensive than renting from Gigglin' Marlin and bringing it with you. Tank refills at the Blue Lagoon are $8, which isn't bad. I noticed that the swimmers in particular did NOT follow the rules of dropping off your stuff at your shore site and then moving cars to the parking area, which really irritates me. The parking lot was created for a reason -- so cars don't clutter and crowd the shoreline. Overall, I really liked it here and will definitely return for future practice dives! read more

Like other reviewers have said, this place is primarily for divers. Only divers can reserve a space in advance, and camping is only offered for divers. It can be really difficult to get a spot if you're not a diver. Which is why I deducted one star. We were one of the "lucky" ones however, and as we arrived on a Friday afternoon one person had just pulled out. We saw three cars behind us get turned away though. Staff here is extremely friendly and helpful, and the restrooms are kept super clean. The lagoon itself is spectacular, there is nothing else like it around the Houston area. We spent 4+ hours here and stayed till closing. We easily could have spent much longer. Each spot is private and secluded which is another plus, and the reason why they have to turn away so many people. In my opinion that's well worth not having to share your space with dozens of other people. My advice if you're a swimmer- call ahead of time, maybe even get there before opening during the week. It's worth the trouble of securing a spot. read more

We camped the night on lagoon 2 , the view and water was beautiful! Clear water and they limit the amount of ppl per day so make your reservations ahead of time. The owners were very helpful and took a lot of pride of ownership. I would recommend going this time of year, they're was no Mosquitos and the water temperature was nice. This place is perfect for a family event and great for some bottom time for certified divers. Their isn't much aquatic life at all because of the high PH in the water. But the water is clear for the most part. The only downsides are no running water and in our area we had 1 port a potty. read more

So, I woke up early to call ahead to see if swimmers were allowed. The lady on the phone was extremely rude, but basically said I'd be okay and that there was space. So, I made the hour drive to the lagoon. When I got there, I was almost immediately turned away. The employees were rude and would not stop watching me as I walked to the edge of the parking lot to look at the pool. They didn't even want me to get out of the car. Long story short, do not come here if you're a swimmer. The dont give a shit about you unless you're a diver who is wiling to pay big bucks to get in. Also, divers can just waltz in. If you're a swimmer, a diver can just go right ahead of you, no matter how long you've been waiting. I understand that there's a limit on capacity, but it is no reason to be rude and forceful like the employees were. Swimmers, who do not provide as much revenue as divers, are simply not important to them The only reason this place earns two stars is because it looked really breathtaking. From the parking lot. Its incredibly serene, beautiful crystal clear bluish green water ....definitely a must-see!!! I've been here about 3 times now. It's one of the only places I really enjoy diving in Texas. I've done the Comal, Guadalupe, Mansfield Dam, Athens Scuba Park, and lake 288. But Blue Lagoon is by far the best. They have air refills and gear rental on-site, should something break on you or you want to do multiple dives. My favorite thing I've done here is to camp overnight with my friends after a day of diving. Nothing like warming up by a campfire after diving all day. The water was surprisingly warm when I went last weekend. Previously, I've only gone in late fall/early winter, and it's chilly. But this time... Well, unlike most places in Texas, there's no thermocline here! The temp really isn't that bad, I actually got hot in my wetsuit, which I almost never do. Visibility is also really good, as far as Texas goes. The average has been about 15-20 feet, which is pretty nice in Texas. The only downside is that sometimes it gets filled really early, and the staff give some of the swimmers the sites that have easy water access... We were almost shooed from our spot on the lake and forced to lug our gear down a very steep/hazardous hill called the Spillway (it looked aptly named...), and to gear up from the trunks of our cars. Luckily, the family whose site we accidentally took let us stay. The pitfalls of being popular, I guess. But on the plus side, they DID let us in as divers, and the swimmers were having to wait in line. Moral of that story? Book a reservation ahead of time, or arrive early. Still a good place for a dive, or a swim, or to hang out/camp. I have a feeling we'll continue our annual trips for a while :). read more

It takes a while for all the cars ahead to fill out paperwork and get assigned a spot. But the staff was wonderful. We got there early and had our own covering as well. It's $20 something to get in and swim. My daughter was getting her scuba certification and this was were her open dive was. This place is beautiful and the water is soft and silky. For not being by the ocean, this was the next best place to hang out as she got certified. The grounds are kept nice and clean and it isn't overcrowded. I like diving here and I like it so much it's worth the drive that I wanted to invite my cousins just to swim while I dive. We planned it out, even made a reservation. I WAS NOT told there was a cut off time on the phone before giving away my reservation if I was not there at a certain time. I was denied entry because I got there at 11am and that the reservation rules for giving away your reservation was "on the website at 10am". Well it's not. I was lied to, why? NON DIVER REVIEW- Had an amazing time with my friends this past Saturday June 4th! We got there super early so that we could get in. For sure try and be there by 8am so that you can have better opportunity. We were very blessed to find that there wasn't a single person in line as weather was supposed to be bad that day. We got in around 8am and parked. We knew ahead of time we wouldn't be let in until 12 so we cooked breakfast out there and sat around and talked. Around 10am they informed us that they would be letting us in early!!! We got in to the lake 2 I believe and were in Lot 8! Been here several times. For some odd reason, the entry fee has changed 3 different times. There's one guy that comes around and check on everyone. He's super friendly an amazingly cool. We always have the time of our lives, when were here. Great for BBQing and picnicking. If you are not a scuba diver, it recommend you to bring plenty of flotation devices. There's parts where myself (5'2") can stand above water; 3 to 4 steps back an my entire body is semerged under water. read more

My boyfriend took me here as a birthday surprise and we drove over an hour, he called ahead to see if we could get in and the girl told him that it wouldn't be a problem because it wasn't busy then at 1pm. At 3pm when we got there they refused to let us in, refused to let us wait to go in, and ordered us and everyone else off of the property as the owner had decided to close it at that capacity. We were only going to swim, not taking diving lessons. The website said that only the diving lagoon has a limited capacity. Everyone was very rude and the owner himself appeared uneducated and unethical.
