Revisited the Blue Mermaid after a long time. We both liked the calamari, it was o.k., tender and not greasy. The dipping sauce was of wasabi and mayo? It was a bit on the bland side. I ordered the house special scallops encrusted in a pecan crust with a blueberry sauce. It came with broccoli and mashed sweet potato. The dish arrived in a low bowl rather than plated, with 4 nice size scallops. I didn't care for the presentation. The scallops were a bit overcooked, the pecan crust was soggy and black in some places. The blueberry sauce if it was a reduction, could not be found on the plate, the scallops alone had flavor and were fresh, but more like steamed. The sweet potato was served plain, bland. The broccoli was a split or quarter of a full broccoli with crown and stem, all intact. The crowns were overcooked, the stems raw. No flavor, bland, and the crowns tasted like they were steamed. B. ordered the short ribs, they were tasty with a dark barbeque sauce. His green beans were suppose to be sauteed, but more like steamed. The waitress tried to make up for the disappointment of the scallop meal with dessert. Pumpkin creme brulee. It was bland and not very creamy, it came with what is suppose to be a ginger snap, it was half a soft baked cookie-bland. For the price, I wouldn't go back. The dining room lamp kept flickering off and on, service was on the slow side. I finally asked the manager for a refill on the water, the service wasn't up to speed, the food and service could use higher standards. I spend a good amount of time in the Carribbean, the menu has some dishes that pass as Carribean, but is an odd mix of foods. I probably won't be back, there are too many other restaurants in Portsmouth that have better standards of food for the same price. We tried the Blue Mermaid because we had a coupon from the Entertainment Book, and we are so glad that we did! This restaurant is clean and all of the staff were very friendly. The food was freshly prepared and it just seems like the chef(s) put a lot of effort into preparing quality meals. My wife and I both ordered quesadillas-she ordered the sweet potato and I ordered the lobster. Both dishes were excellent! I don't normally get order quesadillas because most places screw them up, but the Blue Mermaid does it right. The quesadillas were grilled, and although in the photo they look burnt, they were not. They were grilled and crispy! The meals also included a homemade fire-roasted salsa, which was delicious. This salsa was also served with the free chips before our meal. Very open atmosphere and my fiancé and our two friends were able to hear some (not too loud) live music. We were visiting from VT for a few days and this was the first restaurant that we went to where we had good food, service and were able to hear each other talking across the table! I appreciated that GF, veg and vegan options were labeled, as I am GV/vegetarian. I ordered the quinoa dish, which was very fresh. I expected it to be warm, but was served cold (which is fine). My only issue is that onions were mixed into the quinoa, making the entire base taste like onions. My fiancé ordered the seafood tagine and LOVED IT! We were very excited to try out the new location in Kittery, after having good cozy experiences at the Portsmouth location. The new place is large and roomy, with plenty of parking. But that's where the good stuff ends. The Parmesan Panko Fried Chicken ($21) was dry and overcooked. One large thin piece of breast meat. And the Ital Stew ($16) was pretty much tasteless and very thin, more like a soup than a stew. It had some heat, but little flavor. After adding some salt and lemon to it to pump up the flavor a bit, and adding some leftover tortilla chips from the complimentary chips and salsa, it got a little better. But neither were worth the price on the menu. PS. Prices on the web site are old and lowered by a couple dollars on several items. They also charge a ridiculous amount for a small 10 oz. pour on their drafts. The draft menu shows drafts at &6-$8, but does not mention that you will not be getting a pint, but merely a 10 ounce pour. And these were not "big" or "heavy" beers by any means. Lots of free parking...check Yummy food...check Friendly service...check We were glad to see some of the old favorites on the menu from the Portsmouth location and some new items too. Always love the Saddlebags for appetizers, also the Lobster Quesadilla and Short Rib Tacos are delish. For dinners, I have had the Steak which has always been cooked perfectly and the Seafood Tagine, superb. Miss the banana bread pudding and the onion tumbleweeds. My husband, son, and I went here for a late lunch. It was a rainy Sunday and it wasn't too busy. They had a nice blue grass band playing. My husband got the salmon BLT, my son the kids chicken quesadillas, and I got the Baja Sandwich. The bread is amazing as it's a locals favorite. The sandwiches do fall apart like other people have mention. I enjoyed my Baja sandwich but it had way too much mayo and it made it very soggy to eat. The fries were good but a a tad over cooked. The kids chicken quesadillas was huge and the chicken was very good. My husband said his was good but he wouldn't get it again. The service was friendly but food was a little slow. I've been wanting to try this place for a while, as it's near the post office in Kittery. Had the opportunity to try it today, and I wasn't disappointed. I had the Parmesan Panko Fried Chicken sandwich. A few things I didn't expect, but quite appealed to me: the fries were crispy and thicker (which I always appreciate. They locally sourced the ciabattina bread, and it was good. I like that they toasted the bread with butter, and you could taste it on the bread when you ate it. One small room for improvement: I think this sandwich would be better if it was open faced. It's a lot of sandwich to try to eat without picking apart. I took off the top piece of bread, and had it just like that, and it was delectable. The Panko was perfect, and it was oh-so-delicious. Give it a try! Our server, Myles, was friendly, attentive, and funny! He made the experience that much better (he put up 8 women!) Large variety of drinks to choose from. The Blue Mermaid is my new favorite date spot! I am shocked I haven't been in before but after discovering their 7% cash back deal through yelp and happy hour combo, I was compelled. Their waitstaff (we had Miles ) was so friendly, helpful with all of my silly questions and super down to earth. The decor is a nice change to the drab New England winter, the calamari and muscles were delicious and the drinks were made perfectly! I can't wait until I can go for Happy Hour on the back deck and relax after a day of work. I have never given a one star to a restaurant. We went here for Mothers Day brunch and it was totally dead (should have been our first clue). My mom ordered the lobster omlette special - all you could taste were tomatoes... not sure there was even any lobster in there. It came w/ breakfast potatoes which was like thyme flavored sweet potatoes and beans - very odd and not bfast-like food at all. Homemade chips were ok and homemade salsa was actually pretty yummy. I got the fish tacos which was TINY and came in 2 hard shells even though i specifically asked for soft flour tortillas. You had to use a fork for these and there was no sauce just a hunk of wasabi sauce that overpowered the dish. Mimosas were 3 bucks on sundays which is a killer deal. But the soda water and coffee are 2.75 and 3.25 respectively so that defeats the deal in my opinion. Service was equally as bad. Our meal took over an hour when no one was around - should have been in and out in 40 min. Very unattentive and kind of rude. Oh and they dont have syrup for the french toast which is odd... First impression when I walk in is this place is really cute and bright. The walls are orange, yellow and blue and it has kind of a summery feel to it. It was very uplifting on a rainy dreary day. I came with a friend and we chose to sit at the bar. The bar is small, only 6-8 seats and the back bar looks nice with tiled walls and liquors displayed nicely against the blue background. Windows behind the bar bring the light in and I imagine it looks much nicer on a nice day. I hear the bartender boasting of his cocktail skills and he mentions a key line pie martini so of course that is my drink of choice. It is really good with graham cracker coating the rim. It is ten dollars but strong and tasty. For an appetizer we ordered Wasabi Rangoon, which are wontons filled with wasabi cream cheese served with ginger soy sauce. They were a little too fishy tasting for me but good all the same. The entrees were awesome. I ordered Jamaican Jerk Chicken, medium heat, with hot and sweet jerk seasoning and a salsa topping that was sweet and rounded out the whole meal. It came with whipped sweet potato and veggies on the side. I loved it!! Spicy and delicious. My friends dish, which I had to eat a bite (4 bites) of, was fantastic and I think I will get it next time I come. Parmesan Panko Fried Chicken topped with an andouille cream sauce served with seared spinach and chipotle mashed potatoes. I only tried the chicken on her dish but I am sure the rest was just as good. We skipped dessert because we were so stuffed but I am sure to be back again for more sampling of their menu. I used to come here for anniversaries with my girlfriend. We'd sit upstairs and dine on meals with fresh seasonal ingredients and she enjoyed their gluten free menu. Portions were always small, prices high, but the atmosphere, service and overall quality of the meals made it worth it. Suffice to say, this was the Blue Mermaid I remember from 2 and 1/2 years ago. This is a late review as the last - and final - time I ventured over to the restaurant was for a Sunday brunch with my parents a few months ago. What an awful experience. I came with hopeful expectations and coming from positive past experiences. I've been in the restaurant industry and dined out quite a few times and always give the service the benefit of the doubt while always tipping well, but the service that morning was by far the worst. The server acted either miserable, hungover or both; to say the least, she simply acted as if she did not want to be there and looked like a mess. Our table was first approached by a server-in-training who offered coffee. She was sweet, courteous and accommodating. When our server approached us afterward it was shocking. Would have rather of had the one in training serve us rather than the server herself. Not only was she slow on her feet, but she failed to mention that the kitchen ran out of walnuts for the pancakes I ordered, so instead substituted almonds; I just so happen to be allergic to no other nut than almonds. In any restaurant, substituted or 86'd ingredients should be acknowledged and told to the guests prior to their ordering. In this scenario, Blue Mermaid was lucky not to have a lawsuit on their hands. With competition like Cafe Mediterraneo, Radici's, Jumpin' Jay's, Green Monkey and Brazo, Blue Mermaid seriously needs to step it up. Portions were silly, food bland, and I think commenting on the service at this point would be beating a dead horse. Atmosphere didn't help either as it was cold, dark and stingy. I came here with my girlfriend one day, late in the summer. We are very patient and pleasant people. It looked interesting, and it had a deck seating so we gave it a try. Anyhow, the waitress eventually brought us a thing of chips and salsa. The wiry/spiral thing with paper in it, that held the chips was DIRTY. There was food/sauce stuck to it. Not too good. We each had very simple orders. Burgers. That is it, just ordered a couple of burgers. I swear 40 minutes passed by. We counted as the deck filled up, there were 18 other people on the deck. Food began coming out, to only these people. Our food just never showed up, ever. I really could not believe it. The waitress came out and said " it is just going to be a little longer, can I interest you in a soup or salad?" I politely responded that " no we are fine, I can't imagine it will be much longer for the burgers?" Another fifteen minutes passed by and she came back to tell us it still would be longer, and she offered something ridiculous like taking off the charge for one of the simple burger entrees. At this point I just offered to please pay for the beers so we could leave, it was seriously over an hour for two burgers as we watched people leave full who got there AFTER we did. The waitress apologized profusely and asked us several times if we were sure. Of course I was sure, I've never experienced something so ridiculous in my life LOL. The Blue Mermaid is one of the best spots in Portsmouth. It is located off the beaten path, overlooks adorable 18th century homes, and has complimentary parking for its patrons in the adjacent parking lot. The restaurant has a Caribbean theme and is certainly unique for Portsmouth, NH. The cocktails are excellent (around $10 for a cocktail, which is pricey for the area). If you can make it during happy hour you can save on both cocktails and apps (don't forget etiquette calls for you to tip on the full value with happy hour specials). A personal favorite cocktail is the Killer Collins (bombay sapphire, soda, fresh-squeezed lemon, st. germain). Love the margaritas and the key lime martini comes with a graham cracker rim. The bar is cute, not many seats but it doesn't get too full. There is a small tv so you don't miss the game. The back patio is a great spot when the weather is nice (for lunch or dinner). I prefer sitting downstairs or outside but there is also a large dining room upstairs. Blue Mermaid is a go-to spot of mine. I like it for both lunch and dinner and although I have never brought children, it seems family-oriented. The complimentary chips and salsa are really good. Chips are house made and salsa is different, a little sweeter, and they also sell it to go. The Blue Mermaid is one of those 3.5 star places. The food was okay. My shrimp and scallop dish was good, though there wasn't a lot of shrimp or scallops and the rice noodles were overcooked. My wife's pork loin was a bit better than my meal. Saddlebag appetizers (that's what they're called) were good too. Everything was good, nothing was great, it was an adjective-free dining experience. I'd go back if someone else wanted to, but I'd probably pick someplace else if I was choosing. The drinks were not watered down and not overpriced. That's good but I was there to check out the food. The atmosphere was okay but no more special than my meal. It's as if someone decided more than a few years ago that the place should have a Bahamas or maybe Carribean flavor to it. So they painted the inside a bright mango color, and opened a restaurant. Here we are, many years later. It's okay but to me it looks like they ought to close for a few weeks and do some serious painting and updating. If you're staying at the Hilton, you want to go out for dinner, and the weather is awful, this restaurant is really close and you'll do well. What can I say, other then this place is AWEFUL. Whatever you do, stay away from this place. And I really do think that the folks on here that said the food was 'fine' were being quite gracious. But before I go too far into the food, I do want to say that the service was quite speedy, and our waitress was very pleasant. It's obvious that the chef doesn't taste it, because everything was super bland. I had the lobster and roasted corn chowder to start, which was fine. Although there were about 5 kernels of corn in it. And about 3 pieces of lobster. But the flavor was good. But then I had the Jamaican beef patties. Again, completely bland and the dipping sauce saved the dish. It was 4 pieces of puff pastry with some grey ground beef inside. That was about it. For my entree, I had the wood grilled red snapper that tasted like nothing, and the fish was tough. I bet if I went into the kitchen, I wouldn't find a wood fired grill. I ordered this with a side of sauteed string beans (which were steamed or boiled) and the chipotle rice (which had no hint of chipotle, but did feature quite a bit of undercooked green peppers). And if it weren't for the sauce, it would have been inedible. Speaking of the sauces... There are a ton of them to choose from. If there is anything I have learned over the years, is that any place that allows you to pick and choose your own sauce is questionable. I don't know why I would think this would be an exception. My wife tried the beef medallions with a horseradish sauce, over chipotle mashed potatoes. First off, there were no sign of 'medallions', but rather one filet of some sort of steak which was about an inch think. If these were medallions, where did the rest go? It was tough and in some areas undercooked and cold. Again, the horseradish sauce saved the dish. The chips they brought out in the beginning would be fine in another place, but since The Blue Mermaid was on such a roll with me, what the hell...they were greasy and the salsa was some sort of brown mush that tasted ok, but lacked any sort of heat. Again, even the salsa kept up with the super bland theme. The decor of this place looked like it hadn't been upgraded since the 80's and it was dirty. The music was loud at time, soft at others, and it was clear that it was some college kid's ipod placed on shuffle. And after all this, the bill came to about $85...and my wife had one glass of red wine and I had a coke. It could have been the worst meal I have had for that money. After years of living in Portsmouth I've never been here and shame on me! The margaritas were delish! I had one with jalapeno infused tequila, YUM! For dinner I had the grilled shrimp over island rice with mango salsa and a vinaigrette, it was all perfectly cooked and filled with great flavors. I was a fan of all the food we ordered. The atmosphere was excellent as well. Colorful, joyful, vibrant even though it was a Monday night and a little slow but the place was bustling still. We ordered fish tacos as a app, then for entrees we got Jamaican Jerk chicken and Paella. i loved the Paella (mussels, sausage, pulled chicken and shrimp in a curried rice, tailored to you for spiciness of your choice) I'm not a huge fan of shrimp quality these days but this was fresh, good shrimp. I decided I wasn't going to risk ordering grilled chicken breast since, by policy it seems, restaurants everywhere just destroy chicken. Instead of at least using a probe and cooking it correctly, they just over do it by policy and ruin it. But my Wife wanted the Jamaican Jerk so she got it. It was overdone... It was seasoned well too, so it was a shame. This is their fault, but as I said not exclusive to Blue Mermaid. I think restaurants overdo it a little as common practice because if someone sees a little pink they freak out. Those reading this, trust me, take a little pink. Same with pork, do yourself a favor and just don't eat meat at all if you are worried about seeing a little pink. You're doing it all wrong and ruining it for everyone else. The gin gimlet was great, they had good beer selections, it was hard to choose off their fairly small menu because they had a ton of great choices. Lots of Gluten Free choices and vegan choices too. If it is pertinent to you, they offer many options in Vegetarian and Vegan with Daiya substitutes and tofu substitutes. Blue Mermaid - Lively atmosphere - Caribbean Near Me - Kittery, Maine

My husband and I met a friend at the Blue Mermaid for lunch last week. We laughed when we pulled into the parking lot, the huge sign that talks about Rachael Ray eating there was just funny....they sure are real proud of that I guess. We were also surprised at how crowded it was, there were so many people coming in and out of there at lunch time....we figured that was a good sign that the food was good! I really liked what I ordered from there. I got the spicy hummus wrap which had hummus, carrots, roasted red peppers, sprouts, and cucumbers. I asked them to add cheese to it but I think they forgot, I didn't see or taste any cheese. It was still quite good though and the portion was pretty big. It came with potato chips but I only had a couple of them, they were a bit greasy. I also tried the grilled banana which was pretty awesome. It came with this sweet tangy salsa on top that was quite good. My friend that we met that we met for lunch has been to the Blue Mermaid several times and mentioned that her and her husband love the food. She ordered the Jamaican beef patties which were these spicy puff pastries of beef, mangoes, and other stuff which (according to my friend) is always delicious. I will have to update my review when I remember what my husband ordered but I do remember that he really liked it. It is cute inside, I love how it is decorated. We ate in the bar area but when I went upstairs to use the washroom I was shocked at how rickety and steep the stairs were. Be careful of that! The waitstaff was super nice, it was just a fun place to check out if you are in the area. read more
