    Cured Duck
    Marc B.

For starters, Dufour is located in a beautiful venue that is partnered with the Stage Neck in. The space balances old rustic aesthetics and modernized fixtures to give it a unique warm feel. There is a variety of seating options ranging from a fairly large bar, parlor seating, dining room seating, and in the summer months, porch seating! The menu at Dufour is definitely upscale American, but there are some Mediterranean and French influences, which gives the menu a diverse offering of options. On a recent trip, my partner and I started off with the cured duck which came with whipped chevre, pickled blackberries and a blackberry reduction. This was a highlight of the night, and definitely something we would get again. Additionally, for dinner, we ordered the halibut with came with curried lentils and the scallops with a parsnip puree. Overall, the food was appropriately seasoned and the serving sizes were on the larger end! My only critique was the service. While the staff were nice, for the price point of the restaurant, the staff just seemed a bit scattered. There was an event happening in one of the rooms, so I think it may have had the staff on edge, which then resulted in the staff being a little frantic. This impacted our general feeling of Dufour, as it was a Friday night and we wanted to go to a relaxed environment with good food. Will I go back? For sure. As I mentioned, the food was great with large portions, but I am hopeful that the service was a one time hiccup.

    Steak Frites and Statler Chicken

From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere sets the tone: stately and dignified without ever feeling stuffy. The tables are generously spaced, giving each party the comfort of privacy for real conversation. The background music deserves mention--curated and thoughtful, from the Lumineers to Bonnie Raitt to Amy Winehouse. Present but never overpowering, it added warmth to an already inviting ambiance. The service was impeccable. Every member of the staff carried themselves as if you were the most important guest in the room--attentive, gracious, and seamless in their timing. We began with the charcuterie plate, and it was a showstopper: each selection balanced and delicious. For mains, I chose the Statler Chicken while my guest ordered the Steak Frites. Both dishes were masterfully prepared by an obviously accomplished chef, beautifully plated, and bursting with flavor. Every bite confirmed that we were dining at a restaurant that takes real pride in its craft. Dufour is that rare combination: refined yet comfortable, elevated yet approachable. It is the kind of dining experience you'll want to return to again and again.

Attended a wedding nearby and stayed at the Stage House Inn, where Dufour is located. There are a handful of restaurants in South Berwick and it definitely seems like Dufour would be the best fit for a classy dinner date. Food is pricier compared to other places in town, but you definitely get what you pay for! Portions were large and the quality of the food was fantastic. Our server was very friendly and was able to share many suggestions for places to check out around town. We were turned away from a tavern in town because they were immediately overwhelmed by guests from the wedding coming over for dinner.. and to be honest, I'm kind of glad we were! I think we definitely had a better experience at Dufour than we would have elsewhere.

Wonderful board. Looks good and tastes great

Date night and a new place to try. We did the usual google search for menu and ensured that the options would meet our dietary needs. The menu provided many options and very appealing. The restaurant almost looks like it should be the town hall for this nice little town. When the weather is warmer, the large wrap around porch and lawn space could offer great seating and social space. The inside was very spacious and seating was spaced for the most part. The upstairs is part of an Inn and can only imagine how nice the rooms would be. The menu options looked great and we were excited for the evening. The space was great and the staff was friendly. The presentation of our apps and main courses were also fantastic. The charcuterie was presented nicely and tasted awesome. The combinations of spicy, sweet and sours was just right. The whole board was the best. For dinner we had Scottish Salmon and the Atlantic Halibut. Again, the presentation was beautiful. It looked and smelled incredible. Initially, the food was palatable. But as we continued to eat, we both noticed that both our dishes were over salted. Now, I say this and though the salt was a bit much, the meal was good, but could have been great. The overall experience was awesome and still worth a visit. Hopefully it was just a one time event. It's not good bye...see you again soon.

Vibes! Humor! Amazing Food!…read more If this is what you're looking for, RUN to Catbird! The contrasting bright-colored signs against the jewel-toned walls were immediately welcoming. But watching the staff interact before we were even seated made me feel like this whole restaurant moved as one dancing unit. And guess what? I was right. We were seated in the bar area with amazingly soft pillows and even bigger smiles. We decided from the start that we were sharing everything--and what a delicious decision that was. On the docket: Harissa Roasted Carrots -- WOW. Lightly charred carrots that practically melted in your mouth. The sauces cut through the sweetness and balanced everything so perfectly that I genuinely considered licking the plate. Fried Enoki Mushrooms -- OUT. OF. THIS. WORLD. Light, ridiculously crunchy, and packed with umami that made them completely addictive. Our two "non-mushroom eaters" swore they'd order them again. I will forever crave these. Heirloom Tomatoes -- What a joy! Sweet, salty, smooth, and perfectly ripe. Summer perfection. My partner hates raw tomatoes and went back twice for another bite. Pressed Lamb Belly -- Melt-in-your-mouth goodness. Lamb is one of those meats you either love or hate, and this one was downright delicious. For the mains, we split the steak, duck, agnolotti, braised pork cheeks, and the burger. Every dish stood out in its own way. The burger was definitely a star, the duck and steak were downright addictive, the pasta was some of the freshest I've had in a while, and those pork cheeks just melted away. Everything was composed beautifully, and we were all exceptionally happy campers. And because apparently we had zero self-control on a Friday night, we also ordered the Key Lime Bar and Chocolate Crémeux. The key lime got brighter and brighter with every bite, while the chocolate crémeux was rich, decadent, and exactly what we needed to finish the night. And then there was the service. Perfection. Our waitress was joking, laughing, and making us feel like family--which is exactly what we love. I hope Catbird is okay with having a new local develop a little crush on them... because I WILL be back. ‍ MAKE. THAT. RESERVATION.

Love the energy in the space and the staff are very friendly. Don't rush. Enjoy the experience from apps to dessert. It's worth it. They offer incredible options from vegetarian, chicken, beef and fish. All with an interesting twist of seasonings and accents to make your meal unique in a way. Note: if you want the chicken they cook it fresh so it takes time. So plan ahead. But you can't go wrong. We love the carrots and also tried the fried mushrooms. Our serves recommended the bean salad but no pressure. We ordered it and it was so yummy. A hit. The mushrooms were lightly breaded and just were not what I was expecting. Thankfully because they weee awesome.. The main courses hit it out of the park. My cod dish was so flavorful and if I had bread might have cleaned the sauce off my plate. Ha ha the Lima beans were and unexpected delight. Beef was cooked to ordered and sliced to make it easy to enjoy. Both in the group were very happy. The pasta dish was perfect. Of course I didn't have it so I just sharing the comments from my mother in-law. She love it. The night was perfect. And I just love that the owners also visit tables and serve as well. Molly stopped by and offered the dessert menu which we were "just going to look." Well we ordered it all and it was great. The Key Lime square was out of this world. On if my favorites. The chocolate dish was a hit and a perfect end to our meal experience. Stop on down to South Berwick and grab a seat at the bar, high tops or a table. You won't regret it.

My husband always seems to be disappointed at restaurants by what sounds wonderful and then end up bland. Well, everytime we dine at Stalk, he is so satisfied. We always went to Portmouth for an outstanding experience in dining...now the gemstone is in our neighborhood, your cozy delightful Stalk. Thank you!

I always feel so much better after visiting Stalk-it's a light in the darkness, when things feel so…read moredark that you feel swallowed up by it. A cook, myself, I've been held prisoner in jobs that make one feel discouraged due to indifference and laxity. Eating here, taking in the pride of craft and respect for the clientele makes me realise that places -and people-do exist that truly care about about the customer and strive to make them forget their lives outside the comforting walls of this restaurant. We shared a couple of apps: a crispy-skin chicken leg, indeed crispy and as usual, perfectly cooked, as usual. there are few greater pleasures in life like chicken that is juicy and cooked with an expert hand. It came with excellent ricotta mashed potatoes so good my daughter-who normally refuses to eat mashed potato-had to be fended off with my fork so Dad could swipe a couple forkfuls! The dark, flavorful sauce complimented both the meat and the potatoes. We also got the charred Halloumi cheese with pork belly with sweet and sour grapes and a whiff of finely chopped sage, again having to fend off my daughter for my portion...I was detecting a trend here... For the main courses, my wife got the Black Cod with nicely browned fingerling potatoes and braised cabbage/asparagus. She rarely ate unbreaded fish until Stalk introduced her to exquisitely cooked and seasoned fish filets. My daughter got the mushroom and eggplant kofta with a superb cashew hummus and grilled pita that was cooked with love-grilled enough to get grill marks, but not so long as to cook the life out it-they were still soft and fluffy, with just enough crisp to make scooping the hummus practicable. I got, against my usual practice of eating through the menu (as much as possible during a recipe cycle) to get the Sweet Potato Cavatelli-this is one of those dishes that I could never get often enough. the pasta dishes here are unfailingly excellent, with little culinary surprises in every one-this one, for me, in a dish with sausage AND pork belly no less, the unifying surprise is the Balsamic black butter! It just made every bite taste,,,right, perfectly complimenting the dish and making a delightfully whole flavour profile that one would not, perhaps, expect at a first blush. Taken with the Almond Romesco, it gave a slightly sweet, acidic depth that woke and gratified my palate. Again, as a cook, I appreciate the care and consideration on display that a dish such as this displays. It makes me happy... Our desserts, sadly a harbinger of the meals' approaching end, left us with a nice parting glow-the Coconut Rice pudding-with a mango compote, ginger candied cashews and flashy cherry crisps was nice, light finisher, as was the, wait for it, English pea Mojito ice cream. This follows the Mad Scientist-esque genius of Stalk's ice creams. The unbridled exuberance on display with the ice cream flavours, always makes me lean towards the ice creams over many other fine and tempting desserts...this was no exception. The peas provided a subtle pea flavor, the chill mellowing the flavor we typically associate with peas, but not losing it, is worth a victory lap on its own. The zest of lime and a nicely chiffonaded mint layered on the finishing touches without overtaking the finish, a sign of the practiced hands at work. I also must make mention of the French Press coffee service, there is truly no better way to take your coffee than via a French Press, it is so very nice to indulge in this simple life pleasure outside of my own kitchen... I would be terribly remiss if I didn't give a shout out to the staff-from the exceedingly professional and courteous staff, to the bartender who was very engaging and free with her smiles all night, the professionals preparing our dinner, who deserve much credit for turning Chefs' vision into delicious and intruiging plates of food for all of us to enjoy, and finally to Chef Nicole, who is everywhere making sure everything is running as smooth as possible, yet taking the time to chat with the patrons whenever possible. Our trips to Stalk are almost a pilgrimage-a reminder that cooking can be a joy, and that striving for that goal of making the diner perhaps, through the care and excellence of the food and its preparation, make them forget the nonsense outside the walls of the restaurant for even just an hour or so. This a lofty and noble goal, and one, for this diner, is always met. I hope it is for you, as well
