This is probably the worst review I've ever had to write, so I'll start with the positives. My mother-in-law and I had the scallops on a brioche bun, and my wife had the Cobb salad. The food was very good and fairly priced. Unfortunately, that's where the good experience ended. Upon arrival, our server, Joe, brought over three glasses of water without any greeting or acknowledgment - just dropped them on the table and walked away. No "hello," no "welcome." When he returned to take our order, he seemed rushed and walked away before we could even finish giving our drink order. He only took my mother-in-law's drink order. When I asked about wine options, he handed me a cocktail menu and walked off again without asking my wife what she wanted. She had to call after him just to place her order. Things didn't improve. After waiting 10-15 minutes with no follow-up, my wife had to go to the bar herself to order my drink. It took multiple attempts to get his attention, and when she finally did, he barely acknowledged her - no eye contact, just a dismissive "yeah, OK." Our food was eventually delivered by someone else, who was pleasant. However, Joe never once returned to check on us. No follow-up on the meal, no offer for refills, nothing. We had to track him down just to get the check. I ultimately went up myself to ask for the bill and even asked if we had done something to upset him. He blamed it on being busy and a shift change, which didn't make sense. The restaurant was only about a quarter full, with plenty of open seating. Shift change also doesn't explain being completely absent for nearly an hour. To make matters worse, he didn't even bring the receipt back rather another server did. This was our first visit, and it will likely be our last. There are far too many great dining options in Portsmouth to accept this level of service. In 63 years, this is the first time I've ever chosen not to leave a tip. read more

I am a supplier to a local business and have standardized on this restaurant as my "go to" with clients. They always enjoy their food. I have a lot of food allergies and they give me so many options. Most things can be made gluten free! The gf buns are delicious. They recently had a menu change and I was sad to lose the gf pizza because it was darn tasty, but the burgers, gyros sandwich and black bean burger is exceptional. I may eat the black bean burger forever. For allergy and celiac people, note that everything fried is cooked in the same fryer so it is contaminated but they have other options for sides such as cole slaw, potato salad and a side salad. read more

I have always enjoyed this restaurant in the past, but I was there for breakfast today, and noticed changes to the menu. I understand that they have a new manager there now. The omelet I ordered was not as good as in the past, and the mushrooms were different. The omelets used to come with potatoes and they no longer do, just toast. Our first time. VERY welcoming. Alot of golfers which means there was a friendly group there. Lynn ordered the BLT and I ordered the chicken gyro with a side spinach salad. The BLT was perfect. I'm a big fan of Pease and Grill 28 and have been coming here for years. I was disappointed to see the new menu changes. The locals loved the previous menu so I'm not sure why things changed unless it's about costs. The prices are already quite high for a golf course restaurant and now they are even higher. Up charge for cheese and fries for the burger is annoying. My biggest complaint is that the turkey club is no longer available. That's a classic menu item for a golf course. The turkey club was a hidden menu item but it was the best one I've had on the seacoast and I always recommended it to friends. They have a turkey sandwich on the menu and they have bacon for the burgers. Please bring it back for the members and locals. read more

I met a friend here today for a late lunch So many times Ive wanted to try this place and for reasons I can't begin to think of not until today. Driving up the long road you pass the driving range and also get a glimpse of airplanes at Pease. Being Friday and the holiday weekend the golf course looked like it was in full swing. Very busy. We met up at 2:30 inside the restaurant. It was in the humid side so I was kind of glad that she chose to be seated inside with the air conditioning. The venue was semi- busy but our server was very attentive, brought over menus and took our drink orders just after we sat down. I ordered an unsweetened iced tea with lemon and it was perfect. Just the way I like it. It seemed like a salad day. We both ordered them - mine a half size Greek. My friend ordered what would be similar to a chef's salad. When they came which was not a long wait, they looked inviting. Mine has just the right amount of feta ( real feta - not the processed powdery kind) sliced Greek olives, pepperoni sliced thinly, cucumbers all on a very fresh bed of greens. Let me point out that the greens did not appear to have been from an opened bag and dumped on my plate... They were artfully arranged as we're the other ingredients. I chose the house dressing which was Greek. The salad was one of the best I've ever had! However I'm glad that I ordered a half portion. The full size would have been way too much. My friend's salad looked just as great - all very fresh ingredients on a bed of fresh greens. We did not get any bread or rolls. I wonder if they serve any. Or if you need to ask. I found the restaurant to be clean, bright and cheery. Our server was excellent. If it hasn't been the hottest part of the day I would have liked to be seated outside with the course for our view. Prices appear to be low- moderate. I'd like to return for breakfast sometime. The menu looks great. Hopefully soon! read more

I've been golfing at pease for several years so I've been to Grill 28 more times than I'd like to admit. The food is actually pretty decent. I've never had a problem with the food. The problem here is the draft beer. I don't think they are properly cleaning the beer taps. The draft beer smells and tastes sour. This has been a problem for at least two years. They've done nothing to fix the issue. If you are going to order a beer, make sure you get it from a can or bottle. read more

My wife and I stopped in tonight for a casual dinner out. We opted to sit outside on a beautiful afternoon. Aside from 1 other table, we were the only other people on the patio. This quickly changed as the other tables were seated. Despite having been there first, it took a good 15 minutes before anyone came to our table, in the meantime, all the other tables were served and orders taken. We were getting ready to leave when someone finally came over and took our order. We got a couple of the "special" burgers and ice teas. The ice teas were about as weak as you could get and there was hardly any ice in either one. When the burgers came out, we had to send them back because there was no cheese and none of the toppings on either one that made them "special ". While we were waiting a woman at an adjacent table had also been served a burger and was waiting to send it back as well. She had cut her's in half and it was completely raw inside. We finally got the burgers back and they were as bland as can be. They had absolutely no flavor at all, the meat was clearly unseasoned. Bottom line, we won't be back. It's hard to imagine screwing up burgers and ice tea, but they nailed it. Plus crap service! Nice patio. Save your money and keep driving. read more

I live locally and patronize Grill 28 often. Love sitting outside when possible. The addition of the tent works much better than the table umbrellas. The atmosphere inside is very pleasant too. The food and service is consistently good; I meet friends there often for breakfast on the weekends. They get busy on weekends to it pays to call ahead; especially if you want to sit outside. They actually poached my eggs perfectly! Wish they offered 1/2 orders though. The not so good: once had the steak tips and eggs and steak was really salty and over seasoned. Once had bacon with my eggs that was almost burned. The last few times we've been, we sat outside. Walking through the dining room to the patio, my and my friend noticed a musty or mildew odor. Yesterday I noticed it while sitting outside next to the doors each time a staff person came out to deliver food we caught a whiff of it. In any event, with such a high traffic restaurant, I'm guessing the rug just needs a thorough steam cleaning and drying. Overall, it is a great place. Good food, easy parking, right off the highway but right on the golf course. I'd recommend it. read more

I went there for lunch today with a dear friend and was taken aback at how midline the food was. I ordered the "signature chicken salad BLT" and a Demi roasted beet salad. The beet salad was bad. Really bad. Soggy arugula, fuzzy tasting beets and a cup full of weird looking pecans that I suspect were there to mitigate the other issues. Two bites and I was done. The "Signature Chicken Salad" was dry, lacked any interesting taste and was over powered by the thick wrap. It might have been great after 6 or 7 beers but not with a single Chardonnay. Even the "house made" chips were seriously blah. That bright side is that I had a nice time with my friend. read more

Terribly disappointed. we were there for my fathers birthday. no acknowledgement at all, no candle on the desert, nothing. also, my sons soup didn't arrive and they brought it after we finished all the food, again, a lousy apology but didn't take it off the bill. the set up is cheep with metal uncomfortable tables outside. we were 5 so they put us on a square table for 4. if they had at least picked a round table. Have been there for dinner about 4 times. Breakfast once. All these experiences the food was good. Ambience fair. Does look like a college food hall. Had lunch there recently. Place was packed. Hostess got us in fairly quickly. Server arrived after hostess obtained our drink order so we didn't have to wait longer. Server was a 20 Something male with a large sore on his lip that was off putting around food. Very hazy attention span not that coherent. Took our orders. Came back with the wrong salad for my friend. She asked for a half beet salad and got a full Greek salad. My turkey pesto peppers panini was burned. The half beet salad came back at some point but was limp. She ate half and gave up. Server never returned to ask how our meals were. The check had the Greek salad on it instead of the Beet salad. Overall, not a great experience which disturbed me as I assured my friend that I'd had good meals there. My guess as a nurse is that the server was affected by some substance he may have taken. This was my first time here. I didn't come to golf so I honestly can't review much except for the service inside the restaurant. We stopped here for a quick Drink before I took my ride into the airport. We had mimosas.. Boy they were huge. No champagne glass, more of a pint. They were pretty good and our waiter was nice and attentive. They have a great restaurant, very spacious and clean. Easy to get to and lots of parking. It has a great view of the golf course. If you like to golf this looks like a great place. I can't give it a 5 star bc I didn't try the food or take part in golf. read more

Nice dining room, apps were good, drinks were good. Entrees we're ok. Moroccan Salmon was over seasoned, really overtook the fish to the point that it didn't matter what the main dish was- you just tasted the seasoning. I think the waitress may have been in a hurry to close down- no offer of dessert or coffee, just brought the check. We wound up getting dessert elsewhere. I think this is probably a good spot for the golfers/regulars, but not really worth others making a special trip. read more

The staff typically gets 4 or 5 stars. The food? Meh to poor. Tonight was a big kitchen FAIL. I ended up ordering 2 dishes because the first that came out wasn't hot. The second that came out also wasn't hot. My wife had already finished hers by the time I got my second replacement dish. The only save was the staff but come on kitchen get your act together. We we'll be taking a few months off even though it's local for us. Too bad because we wanted to like this place. Note to management:. Joined my daughter and my husband who had an hour of playing golf in the simulator at Grill 28. Our following lunch was a terrific surprise! We began with a hot feta dip, served with warm, charred pita slices, fresh cucumbers, chopped tomatoes and nice mountain of tapenade. Delicious, we licked the platter clean! I followed with a butternut squash salad with baby arugula with dried cranberries, walnuts and goat cheese. Divine and the half portion was plentiful @$5.99!. Husband was delighted with his chicken gyro with homemade potato chips. My daughter considers herself a chicken Caesar salad expert, and this is her favorite. What's not to love at Grill 28? Kevin Harrington has always been the Breakfast King of the seacoast! Do you like perfectly poached eggs? How about golden hash browns? Creamy hollandaise? Look no further! It's all right here. Lunch treats include his famous chicken salad BLT wrap or a pulled pork sandwich. Dinners are like Mama makes! Comfort food all the way! This wasn't my first time being here. But I will say the waitress that took our table WILL NEVER be my waitress there again-- If I ever decide to go. My first experience here was fine, there was a band playing and we had reservations for a table for 10. It was our first time around and they were fantastic about serving us. My most recent visit with a table for 10 was a nightmare. I was so frustrated with the incompetent waitress towards our bill. People were coming and going from the table throughout the night and were able to pay their tabs when they left which seemed to be a non-issue. At one point in the night, she handed off the wrong drink to someone at the table. He tried it and instantly knew it wasn't what he ordered. A couple other people sipped it and decided that it wasn't a "sex on the beach" at all. She came back with another person's drink and he had told her it wasn't his drink. Instead of saying that she was sorry, she took the drink and gave it to person who had originally ordered it. [instead of bringing an INCORRECT drink back to the bar that had already been sipped on] When it got to 915 and we asked for our tab she handed us a bill for the whole table and told us she couldn't separate anything. This was clearly a lie because it had been done before at our last visit WITH NO PROBLEM AT ALL. She more-than-likely didn't keep track of what people were ordering and wanted to cover her butt by just putting random drinks on the entire tab. At the bottom of the tab it also included gratuity. I managed to figure out my order on the passed-around, scribbled-on receipt and told her to put a certain amount on our card. we figured in gratuity, tax, and our entire order and obviously threw in a couple extra bucks to take from the tab. FIFTEEN MINUTES LATER she came back after standing at the register/computer area and looking at the screen and then back at us and then up to the screen again MULTIPLE TIMES. Our bill was now an extra $20 because she decided to add gratuity to it again. At this point I couldn't deal with her. We signed the receipt and waited for her to come back and take it. I had to leave the restaurant before she came back because I DONT UNDERSTAND why we had to suffer because of her lack of attention. She really needs to be taught customer service. There is no excuse for her incompetence and if there is a waitress that can't handle larger tables, then they shouldn't be put on that table! This was supposed to be a fun night, but it turned into stressful because SOMEONE COULDN'T DO THEIR JOB. read more

Just had a 40th birthday party here. Entire restaurant was reserved. They closed to the public at 3:30 and let us arrive at 4 to decorate...everyone was nice and helpful. The food (heavy apps) was delicious. The staff was excellent...cleaning up as soon as something was put down on the table. Desserts were wonderful too. I would definitely recommend Grill 28 for a function... though there is a minimum charge (which is high) but the food and service were excellent. I've gone here several times over the last year, mostly for work lunches. Service is always slow (not the worst ever, but it's slower than it should be.) Beautiful outdoor seating which is the only reason we continually go back, and they are good about getting a reservation for our group of 6ish people. They have their own parking, shared with the golf course, but it's always ample. Menu is small, a little pricey and portions are a bit small compared to similar places in the area. My favorite thing ever was the taco salad, and was disappointed to find out it's gone the last time we were there. Got a pulled pork sandwich (which was new) and it was OK - nothing special. House made chips are good. All in all if you're OK with a relaxing lunch enjoying the nice weather, you'll probably be happy. Otherwise, it will likely disappoint. read more
