I let her plan it and I'm so glad I did because the moment I got out of the car at Bonne Terre, I knew it was exactly what I needed. We rented the studio, originally for four nights, but we were so cozy and comfy there that we ended up staying an extra day. The host, Jen, is so kind and welcoming and has thought of *everything* one might need: extra bedding, plenty of fluffy towels, an iron and a hair dryer, locally made soap, a bath robe, a washer/dryer, dishwasher along with plenty of dishes for cooking, spices (cleverly stored in the freezer), coffee and tea along with an assortment of sugars, records and their player, a beautiful antique piano, books, DVDs, and games that were all appropriate to the location... even a carton of fresh eggs from the hens and a bowl of ripe cherry tomatoes. The furnishings are charming, eclectic, and artistic, with many pieces collected from local artists--modern yet somehow timeless, and very homey. Everything was sparkling clean and so thoughtfully arranged that it made us want to leave it just as nice as we'd found it. We ate dinner on the porch that night and listened to the symphony of insects and frogs somewhere out in the trees. Some of them even hopped past us and took up residence on the screen door and windows. My favorite part were the lovely animals. We were taken on a farm tour, given more vegetables for our salad, and introduced to the many different breeds of chickens, a turkey, Sebastopol geese, a family of goats, a horse, a cow, and the adorable pair of ducks who'd hatched a duckling named Daffodil. This tiny duck and I became great friends as I was honored with the chance to hold her and visit with her each evening--which was probably the high point of this whole year! The farm is also situated in a pleasant area for an evening walk, down a charming country lane. Before we left, we were shown the other rental--a cottage at the front of the property, with an outdoor shower, a loft bed, a gorgeous porch, and all the same wonderful amenities as the studio. We are planning to return in September and if we do, I'd be more than happy with either accommodation. If you're looking for some peace and quiet or want to hit the pause button on the stressors of city life, don't hesitate to check out Bonne Terre. I'm sure you'll be just as enchanted as we were!

You can read Bonne Terre's many five star reviews on Airbnb to know it's a super special place. If you're a nature lover, an artist, an appreciator of Louisiana culture, or just someone looking to get away from the rat race for a few days, a week, or longer, you won't find a better place than Bonne Terre. It's amazing. Both the Main House and the Studio are full of everything you could want or need for your stay - cozy beds and much better equipped kitchens than I've ever seen in a rental, plus cool art, books and music. Jen is a wonderful hostess. You can check out the organic garden and meet the many animals on the farm, including horses, Matilda the cow, goats, rock star-looking Polish chickens, and more. Or you can just kick back and drink coffee on the porch as you take a pause and enjoy the beauty of the farm. I'm so looking forward to my next visit. Russell and Brenda are the kind and helpful managers. Parking is limited to a side street but perfectly safe in this small town. I wish the wiring would allow a few more outlets in the rooms. Bring your 10' lightning charging cords and a multi usb adaptor... but it's an old house. The charm beats the lo band width WiFi (use your personal hotspot). So this is not a complaint: be aware that you are coming to an older property with eccentricities and you will be delighted.

This home was built by French born rice and oil merchant Emile Daboval in 1892 and has been meticulously restored and furnished with antiques. Rooms are super clean (we're both clean freaks and very picky about room cleanliness) and well appointed with everything you need, including plush towels and starched sheets. Soft drinks, water, and ice are provided in a small room downstairs. Smooth chicory coffee service is quietly brought to your door each morning, followed by a delicious breakfast served downstairs in a beautiful, country chic dining room. We recently enjoyed cream cheese stuffed French toast with Louisiana strawberries, locally smoked bacon, hash brown potatoes seasoned to perfection, and freshly squeezed orange juice. On another occasion, yummy ham and cheese muffins and locally made andouille sausage were in the menu. Seriously----restaurant quality Cajun cuisine created by Martha in her kitchen! We simply cannot say enough about Maison Daboval. You won't be disappointed and will be treated like family.

Definitely not a hotel chain kind of place. The rooms are spacious from what I saw. We had two double beds. The bathroom was large and there was a big tub. It sits right on Bayou Amy and you can watch alligators swimming by from the porch. There aren't many outlets for you to plug your electronics in. They're mostly behind the bed. When we went to try to put the plug behind there, the headboard fell off of the wall. It was just barely hanging on this piece of cork board... The problem is that the walls are super thin. You can hear everything from the room next to you; everything they're saying and watching on the tv. So if you're unlucky and are next to people who stay up late...we'll you aren't sleeping. You can also here the music from the bands playing in the club next door. There are doors that attach the rooms, so I guess if you have a large party you can visit each other. When we left for the day, we didn't put the do not disturb sign on our door, but they still didn't come to make the beds. The free breakfast is just a couple of cereal options, coffee, orange juice and an assortment of packaged pastries you can choose from. The craziest thing about this place is the cats. The parking lot is completely crawling with cats, like 30 of them. Everyone tries to feed them so they stick around. They're very friendly and sweet, but be careful because they might try to follow you inside. It is convenient that there's a bar and a restaurant attached. There is a lot of construction right when you get off of the interstate, so be careful that you're GPS doesn't try to reroute you like it tried to do to us.
