Decided to see what the winery situation was in this area and visited three wineries. The Blue Ostrich offers a very high-quality facility. Surprised to see the tasting room so small, which is why virtually everyone is then escorted to more restaurant like area to be seated for a tasting. This location is quite nice and offered a suitable selection of snacks and small means to go along with the wine. We ordered the charcuterie, which was well done. We also had a savory baguette and schmear. Also very tasty. For the wine tasting, you can do three different flights - white, red and sweet. Having gone to scores of wineries around the world, I am always disappointed when the wine tastings are these kinds of prearranged flights. I vastly prefer it when you can merely select the wines you want, and if that is a combination of some of each kind so be it. This approach kind of forces you into more flights than you might want to do to get a broad sampling. I would say 80% of the wineries visited around the world offer the guest selects, not the preset. For that reason, we had all three fights. Perhaps just not our taste, but there was only one wine I would buy and that is the Sun Kissed. The others that were good, but just not good enough for me to buy because I have better examples already in my wine collection were the Montepulciano and the Tannat. So, overall, nice place, good enough wine, well presented food and the service was excellent. And yes, there are ostriches to visit. read more

I came here with my wife to celebrate our anniversary in early January, on a Thursday afternoon. It was not very crowded at all, only three groups were present during our visit. Once you arrive, you will notice a little cage to the left where they keep one of their ostriches. It was my first time seeing an ostrich and it was pretty cool that they allowed us to see it. The place has an old farmhouse look, which makes it very unique. Our waiter was very kind and informative. She was very attentive to us and kept refilling our water and making sure we were comfortable. I would say that this place is perfect for a little date on a sunny Saturday, as long as it is not too busy. I really liked the way this place looks inside and out. After the waiter explained the wine choices to us, we went with the Black Ostrich flight. I thoroughly enjoyed those wines, they were all on the sweet side. My favorite was Poppy's Garden. It had a strawberry scent and, of course, a hint of it when you drink it. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys drinking sweet wines. We also tried the Herb butter and cheese pull-apart bread and the ultimate holiday meatballs. I must say that the pull-apart bread stole the show. The meatballs tasted great with the fig, but that pull-apart bread is something else. It looks like a regular piece of bread, but you would not believe how flavorful it is! It had a fair amount of cheese and was very savory, enough to make you want more. You need to try this when you come! Overall, I was impressed with this business. If you were hesitant about visiting, I recommend that you go for it. You won't regret it! read more

My wife and I absolutely love this winery. The wine is excellent, and the staff is consistently warm and friendly. Alexis helped us today and did a wonderful job--knowledgeable, personable, and welcoming. Even though we sat outside where there is no table service, she made sure we were well taken care of and offered several great wine suggestions, which were much appreciated. My husband and I have been going to Blue Ostrich ever since we discovered them on our honeymoon 12 years ago. They were our favorite of a North Texas wine tour we took. We have watched them grow from a brand new vineyard with a small tasting room into the large patio with live music and food that they are now. We have been customers of blue ostrich winery for several years. As a matter of fact, we are vested wine club members. Their selections have always been very high-quality and their wines are a great gift for neighbors and good friends. If you live in the metroplex this is a couple of hours drive northwest and the scenery all the way (once you get out of Gainesville) is absolutely beautiful. Once here you'll feel like you are alone on a ranch in the country with a glass of boutique wine. The winery is definitely kid friendly, they have of course charcuterie's and other selections from the kitchen, and much of the time they invite high quality musicians who perform on the patio. At certain times of the year they have events for the wine club members, and recently Michael Martin Montgomery was here and they are starting to have other high profile musicians here in the future also read more

I've only been here once, and if you know me, I don't go 5 stars on one visit, unless there's little or no chance that I'll ever be back. So, since on this first visit, there's a very good chance we'll be back (we make regular run's to Fischer's in Muenster to buy sausage), I'll give BOW my highest first visit rating - 4 stars. It was worth the extra drive from Muenster. I was not expecting the setting that unfolded as we drove up 2382 from St. Jo (on 82). Gorgeous views. The winery has tasty wines and scrumptious view. Must be gorgeous at sunset. Lots of tables, indoors and out. There was live music on our visit. I also recall seeing a menu board, so there are on-site food options (not knowing this, we brought our own, which is OK too). I am not a wine connoisseur, I either like it or I don't. All the (red) wines I tried. I liked, but I'm easy that way. BOW is a bit off the beaten path, that path being IH 35, but if you're not in a hurry, it's a nice detour. Bottom line: Don't forget to see the ostriches! read more

Take a day trip away from Dallas or Austin areas to the Blue Ostrich in Saint Jo Texas. Lovely hilltop location catches the breezes. Great views. Outside and inside seating. We tasted all of their whites. Lantana was our favorite. We got 4 bottles! Yep, that good. All their wines were all very good. Very reasonably priced. Not all grapes+ sourced from here but their flavor profiles make this null point for us. Cheese tray with the wonderfully smooth 5 yr cheese being spectacular. They also have smoked salmon tray. Pine nut hummas tray, sausage tray and other tastey treats to pair with your wine selections. read more

I had a glass of white wine and seat out in a very large indoor outdoor area. it was very cool area that had these almost like garage doors that would open up to let the air through. One of the nicer wineries in the area. I can't say we like every wine we taste at every winery but we liked most of them here. The tasting room staff was friendly and told us about their wines. I think their wine prices were a bit high and their glass sizes were a bit small. However most of them were tasty. They have a nice pavilion on the side which is set up well to block the wind. There is a nice view of the vines. You can also walk a bit and see the ostriches that are on the property. Don't get too close to them and watch out for ants and even snakes near the pond. I never saw the latter but there were signs warning you. All in all, this winery had a great view and it's a nice place to bring a picnic lunch. read more

We drove up from Dallas to do the St Jo area winery tour, and each of the three we visited had a respectable wine selection and their own their respective pros and cons. Blue Ostrich: + Easy access from the paved highway (others have long gravel roads-driveways) + Wine frappe, a slushy wind drink that is particularly tasty in warm weather + Super comfy glider loveseat on the front porch + Modern barn shaped steel building and out building for concerts surrounded by cool glass garage doors + Pleasant view of the vineyards, situated in a mostly flattish field adjacent to the property - The largest crowd, and the most commercial (least soulful) vibe - Cramped tasting room on busy days (pro tip: get your wine around the left side of the main house, in the glass doored concert structure) read more

It kinda said, get your wine and go. The patio in winter. Warm enough, but not comfortable. The furnishings are all metal (like cheap patio furniture). We wanted to stay longer, but the chairs were hard and the area chilly. Live music is great, but it was loud. It made it hard to have a conversation. I'd suggest: Upgrade the table and chairs for colder temps. Metal is fine when the doors are open and the weather warmer (all shaded). Turn down the music or make areas with less noise. (Think romantic afternoon) I'll be back. Although the stuff I didn't like is listed, I really liked the place overall. They have had success and will continue to do so. Their tasting room is big enough to accommodate the weekend crowd and their patio (now featuring an outside bar serving Wineritas) is very comfortable to host large groups. Periodically, they provide live music out of the patio for your enjoyment. Their wines are great, especially their estates. They have wine tastings available if you can't decide which bottles to try. We were immediately greeted, seated and served within 15 minutes. Not only was the wine was amazing, the views are gorgeous!! Live music and great atmosphere. Stopped in on a Sunday outing quarantine they where packing shipping items. They where nice enough to let us come in and look around and ended up buying some of the nice wine to try at home. The best thing is they are having 5:00 happy hours on Friday with tasting of the bottles we purchased, we have FaceTimed friends log on to their Facebook and had the best time watching their pairings. We all made the recipes they suggest and truly enjoyed them. In these crazy times we may not be able to be close in real time but we sure have made the best of it with this happy hour you all have had. Thank you all and we will all be back at the happy hour soon. But until them happy face time! Perfectly located winery on a ridge overlooking a shallow valley. I could feel stress melting away while we sat outside enjoying the view and sipping wine (fortunately, it wasn't a hot day by Texas July standards.) I'm not sure it would be as enjoyable on a day with more typical temperatures for the season. The covered patio has big sliding doors that can come down and enclose the entire space, so I'm hoping they close it up and blast the AC on hot days. But I digress. The wines we tasted were all delicious. We prefer sweeter wines so we bought a bottle of Sweet Serendipity to drink while sitting outside, and then bought another one to take home with us. Which is gone. One quibble, we ordered a snack tray that was a bit pricey and there really wasn't much to it, pretty as it was. But that may be par for the course at wineries. I also agree with another reviewer who said the tasting area is too small (only four tables and no chairs) and definitely sends a message about what they want you to do. This felt like being transported somewhere away from Texas and was a wonderful change of scenery for a few hours. The surrounding area is beautiful and we enjoyed driving down the country roads, and exploring the town square in nearby Saint Jo as well. read more

We have been coming here since Blue Ostrich opened but were treated so rudely today that we will NEVER be back. We were a group of 10 ladies celebrating a birthday. We were having a great time, like we always have in the past, but were suddenly told by the owner that they wouldn't serve us anymore...basically asked to leave. Myself and 2 of the ladies shared ONE bottle of wine. No one had too much to drink. We were there maybe 2 hours. Not sure what has changed here but its a completely different atmosphere. You better act as if you are in a library. Definitely not for groups. Try Arche down the road where you will always be treated with dignity and respect! My daughter took me to this sweet spot this weekend for my birthday. I am not a big drinker - I prefer Dr. Pepper! When I joked about that with Sawyer, our waitress, she recommended some wine we might like! Who would have thought! They had 5 red and white wines that were quite sweet (may have been dessert wines) and I was in heaven. The menu just had enough food for a small meal, but we were stuffed. The Artichoke/Bacon Dip served with thin pretzel chips was amazing. So was the cheese and sausage basket. Sawyer explained everything and gave us great suggestions. She really watched when we were through with each taste test of our samples and was ready for another one. I can't wait to show this special spot to other friends and family. I told my daughter she beat out her brother and sister on birthday gifts this year! After reading the review from Megan on 5/2/21 - I would have asked them to stop drinking, too. Ten people in a party? Come on. This is a respectable place, not a cheap bar. Reservations are limited to 1 1/2 hours. They overstayed their welcome. read more

Roussanne is a nice dry wine. Dolcetto is a lovely red with fruity, berry notes. The 2010 Cab Sav is leathery with soft tannins. The Tempranillo is very interesting and delish with a touch of tobacco and mineral flavors in a light but multi dimensional red wine. Beautiful property with live ostriches and a hilly vineyard. It would have been a much higher review but the last 5 minutes of our visit really ruined the entire experience. We came to hear a family member playing in the band and had never been here before and enjoyed the atmosphere, wine and food. Apparently we missed the 90 minute table reservation expectation. We were given zero notice that our time was up. Someone came to our table picking up the items on our table telling us it was time for next reservation and we were being relocated to the tasting room. A little communication ahead of time that we needed to wrap up would go a long way instead of being rushed out for the next guest. We did a tasting, ordered a glass of wine and food. We were not just taking up table space at the time we were relocated. It was really abrupt. We will not be interested in returning or purchasing wine from this business. read more

This is the BEST PLACE EVER. Made reservations for a wine tasting on Saturday and we had a wonderful time. The staff was amazing and friendly. Racheal was great! We sampled three different wines then went out to the vineyard and to see the ostrich. After we were done walking around we bought a bottle of wine to drink while we sat under the pavilion. This was such a great experience. The staff were so friendly and helpful. Kayla helped us when we arrived and she was fantastic. We did not have a reservation but they were able to accommodate a largish party of 9. The food offerings were very nice. Loved the warm nuts and the Mediterranean humus was really good. My husband and I love to take a Sunday afternoon and drive up to Blue Ostrich Winery in Saint Jo! Now that they have completed the pavilion, it's easy to find a nice shady spot to enjoy a picnic lunch and bottle of wine. Sometimes there's live music, too. We often bring our little dog, who is a trouper and up for any outing. After we've finished, we take a walk through the rows of grapes and pause to look at the ostriches. We enjoy the Viognier, and their new dry rose, Seven Brides, in the summer. When fall comes and the temps cool a bit, we'll move on to the reds. My husband particularly likes the Tempranillo. It's a beautiful spot, and a fun relaxing place to share a bottle with someone special. read more
