As someone who didn't grow up near the ocean, I was apprehensive about taking a 6-day 101/103/104 and 114 ASA certification course suggested by my spouse. But luckily Captain Anthony (aka The Happy Captain) helped to dispel any of those fears. His 30+ years of sailing experience and instruction got us up to speed quickly on the 38-ft catamaran "Untethered". In addition to sailing, we learned provisioning, how to anchor at mooring balls in Catalina, and spent 4 nights on board. It's hard to express they joy I felt at seeing the dozens of dolphins that joined us one afternoon. The man overboard drills we did offshore of Marina Del Rey were also memorable. We brought our own Starlink terminal and were able to familiarize ourselves with some of the navigation and weather apps. Ruth in the office made sure all of our logistics went smoothly. We had a great day at Sea with BPY. Our group of 15 rented a 75 footer. Things got pretty crazy once the Aux chord started to get passed and the white claws started to flow. The staff was amazing, cleaning as we were having fun eating cake and drinking and always making sure the fridge was stocked. They also helped load and unload the paddle boards. I was hoping to drive the boat - got Denied. Our outing was a little long, 6 hours at Sea in the heat was draining and fatiguing. Luckily there was indoor seating and tons of H2O read more

I just took the three-day ASA 104 (bareboat) and ASA 114 (catamaran) course with instructor Greg. Organized as a trip from Marina del Rey to the isthmus of Catalina and back. The boat was gorgeous and in absolutely pristine condition. Greg did a great job balancing direct instruction with standing back to provide hands-on experience. His maneuvering drills among mooring buoys were particularly helpful. Maybe not the stuff of sailing fantasies, but getting your boat safely to its mooring without incident is in fact the foundation of a good sailing trip. These were not my home waters (I'm out of SF Bay), which was kind of the point. My classmates/shipmates were also from various places around the country. They were all pleasant and capable, which made it engaging to learn from each other. If you're serious about learning how to skipper well, and having fun while along the way, Blue Pacific is a good choice. read more

I just got back from an ASA 104/114 "certification weekend" and it was great. Our instructor was Greg, a former school teacher/administrator turned ASA instructor that provided a patient and calm approach to learning the material and practicing our skills. The boat we were on was excellent - a 2022 Leopard 45, which felt new in every way, and provided a very nice platform to learn from. I feel confident that I have the knowledge to charter one of these vessels, and now just need to gain additional experience and build out my sailing-resume as I practice my skills. I drove up from San Diego for this class and two others on board came even further - one from PA and another from OR, so no matter where you are - this class is worth the trip (just make sure to complete 101/103 prerequisites). Friendly, helpful staff. Nice sailboats in good condition. They didn't explain the parking well and lots require payment by a payment station, I got a ticket during the charter. Also, the web prices are low bc they don't include include the cleaning fee. We ended only being out for two hours and had to help furl the mainsail and boat up clean up. read more

I recently passed ASA 101 at Blue Pacific and highly recommend this sailing school/club to others! It was a lot of materials to cover over the course of two days, but our instructor, Aaron, did a really fantastic job explaining and demonstrating everything. I really look forward to continuing ASA 103 with Blue Pacific in just a few weeks! A few things to highlight: 1) I did a TON of research prior to signing up at Blue Pacific, comparing different ASA schools listed below in Marina del Rey (they are all priced very differently), and BPY is the BEST bang for your buck if you are a quick learner: - Marina Sailing: the cheapest, but their boats are in absolutely awful condition. You can see how terrible and old the sails are just by watching their boats drive by. Could cause safety issues if the boats are in terrible conditions. - Bluewater Sailing: owner is really nice, but about 2.5x expensive for just 101 alone (about $2000, way too much imo), more thorough and you get more on-water time. To me, the cost is not worth it personally. Could be useful to those who don't find sailing intuitive and need more time to pick up the most basic skills. Not a fit for me. - BPY: I find sailing (similar to driving) very intuitive especially when you are sitting at the helm and wind is hitting your face. I was not overwhelmed by any of the materials thrown at me over the course of two days, and thought I picked everything up pretty quickly. There was someone in my class who didn't pass 101, and it is NOT a reflection of the teaching quality of the instructor at all. Some people take longer to pick up skills, and that's perfectly ok. I thought our instructor Aaron did an amazing job, and it's a good thing that not everyone passes 101 -- that means the school sticks to its standards. Overall BPY is really good if you're a quick learner! 2) BPY does reciprocity with other sailing clubs! It's like a buddy / sister club system where if you're a member at another sailing club, you might get membership discounts at BPY too. I knew Blue Pacific Yachting would be great from the first time I spoke with Ellie and Ruth. They are friendly, informative, helpful, and a fun bunch! My boyf often charters General Lee and the experience is seamless. We go to the office and pick up the keys then drive a few minutes to where the boat is docked. There is access to bathrooms at the dock and the boat is always clean and ready to sail!! I recently chartered a boat on my own as a surprise for the first time and Ellie walked me through the charter rental process with ease. She sent me all the paperwork immediately after the call via email and even sent a custom certificate for my surprise charter! Both times we were met at the dock by the courteous and knowledgeable staff who walked me through a very thorough pre-sail inspection and walk-through, answering all of my questions. I have been using Blue Pacific Yachting for over a decade. I trained with them and obtained many ASA certifications and have also chartered with them probably 6 times or more. The staff is great and a pleasure to work with. The fleet just keeps getting better and that is a HUGE plus! I have only had two issues and neither was due to Blue Pacific Yachting. 1) Parking at your chosen yacht in based on the yacht's location in the marina. NOTE: If the structure says "6 ft clearance" at the entry...they MEAN 6 FEET! Not 6.5 NOT 6 1/4. LOL, my bad. I smacked the pipes in the structure and almost got stuck. 2) A charter owner accused me of something that never happened. Blue Pacific Yachting took care of the complaint and he removed his yacht from charter shortly afterwards. There are several places you can charter or learn to solo and I have tried many of them. I always end up back at Blue Pacific. read more

They had good reviews and were responsive and very friendly on the phone. I was not disappointed. Instructors Jenn, Guy, and Chris were fantastic. Extreme professional, knowledgeable and adaptable to our different experience levels. The boats are in good condition. We learned how to do a safety check before embarking, how to maneuver under power, various points of sail, how to trim sails, basic navigation, and a lot lot more, always with safety in mind. Over decades of sailing, my husband and I have sailed with five different charter clubs on two coasts, and Blue Pacific's concierge-level service is impressive. Terrific team; impeccable maintenance. Emerging from the pandemic, we recently bareboat-daysailed the Tartan 26. Ellie arranged the charter and expedited the documents by email. Two days later, Harrison expertly walked us through the checkout process. The sloop has a self-tacking jib, cockpit-led lines, lazy jacks, bluetooth-syncing radio, Torqeedo electric motor, clean topsides and a sleek bottom. We cleared the jetty at 11am and enjoyed a great sail in 10-12knots on the bay before returning at 4:30pm. Harrison met us dockside and squared away the final boat-care details. Got some 1:1 instruction with Andy on my newly acquired boat. I needed some refreshers and someone experienced to show me a few details on my boat and help me gain confidence to do single-handling. Andy helped me out not just with general sailing things (all the parts of going out, raising sails, trimming, heaving to, reefing), but with day to day things like: how to refuel, how to get a pump out, how to anchor single-hand, how to leave and re-enter my slip and park in weird spots (single handed), how some systems on my boat work. He helped me sort out my anchor, my macerator, my lines and gave me just a ton of helpful information. After this, I left for a 12h trip up the West Coast, went on few days sail to the Channel Islands... on my own boat and without a hiccup! To put it shortly, Andy was nothing short of awesome.
