I attended a Junk Journaling workshop with Hanabee at Rediscover Center and absolutely loved it! It was free, which was great - it's hard to find similar events that are low or no cost. It was fun to have access to so many recycled materials and meet new people. My son's class took a field trip here and it was absolutely wonderful. I had no idea that places like this existed, but how great because my son and his friends love the idea of re-using old, unwanted materials and turning them into something new. All of the kids had a blast and were so excited to bring home their creations. I definitely plan to be back both to drop off materials as well as to do some crafting together as a family. I love this place. I dropped off some upholstery fabric there a few weeks ago. They really like almost EVERYTHING that can be included in an art piece. I concur with other reviews written here - this place is really great. Sent my son for the winter cardboard camp and he seems to have enjoyed every minute of it (whereas he usually has some complaint about camps, there has only been one here and that was about the walk to the nearby park where the campers eat lunch). What a heart break! My child has been heartbroken because they canceled his camp with no notice. They said the canceled it as of the Thursday before, but no notice ever got to the families. So the first day, all these families showed up at the park with eager and excited kids only to have no one there. No one had any idea, even kids who had been to the camp the Friday before! The thing is, even if they had given notice the Thursday before that is not enough time for parents to scramble to find somewhere to send their kids. Aside from parents' need for childcare, it was really heartbreaking for my kid. Haven't they been through enough this year? This was the one camp all summer where he was doing something without siblings that was really aligned with his interests. He's been bored and cranky all week, picking fights with his siblings and family. I will not be signing my kids up for any programming with them in the future since I'll never be sure they won't cause this kind of upheaval and disappointment again. read more

The activities were fun, we got to learn about using power tools, and the staff were great! Especially Hanabee, Jim, and Alex. Started off with a name activity and moved into using a hand saw and drill. Made a thing called not-a-box where you start off with a box and transform it into your own thing. Both of my sons attended re-discovery camp for two weeks. They loved the hands on learning and the social engagement with both the kids and the teachers. They always came home with fun and creative projects. Loved how original their idea was and was truly unique to what they envisioned. There scholarship program is amazing. This place is awesome! So-o much better than Legoland. Even as an adult i love how creative they were with construction paper and basic tools. My kids loved the pop up construction city camp st 3rd street promenade. It was so well planned and the staff was so friendly. Anyone with artsy kids should drop by. The supplies are recycled from business donations. The warehouse is only open on Saturday mornings/Tuesday afternoons (2:30-5:30 p.m). They stock fabric, metal, and wire that can be used for assemblage or fiber art. This is a nonprofit art education center that holds environmental art classes and sells collage materials from their warehouse. You have to go through the alley to get to the warehouse to minimize class interruptions. read more

I had my son's 5th birthday party here and it was fantastic. Not only did my son love it but so did our guests, kids and parents alike. The facilitators were great and a wonderful time was had by all! We will definitely be returning for open play craft projects on Saturdays. read more

This place has changed. Last year you were able to go into the back junkyard area and go through all the boxes, tubes, computer parts and saw things/glue stuff together for hours. Which my son LOVED. Now... you can't go in the back area. They gather items for you and you create in the shop front. So getting to dig through stuff is not an option anymore... that was part of the magic... But it's still a good place to take your kid. Check to see if there is a birthday party. If so, your access to everything is limited. read more

My kids first went to Tinkering Camp at reDiscover in 2011. The ratio of facilitators to campers allowed for focused attention and the space to explore. In the first day of a camp or after school program kids are introduced to a variety of small woodworking tools and techniques. Then the kids direct the build around a theme. My six year old son absolutely loves making things in their open crafting space. He liked it so much that we had his fifth birthday there and it was so much fun! Still think this place is a wonderful idea but this time we went (vs first time when we virtually had the place to ourselves) I realized what a waste of space this place is. The crafting room with supplies is like tiny compared to the rest of place and EVERYONE was crammed in there. The front has three picnic style tables but no supplies and I don't know what they use it for. You venture out to use the glue gun but then you have to go back into the glorified supply closet for anything else you need. They need to reconfigure the front room. There were 7 kids total in there and we were dancing around each other when they have a huge back and front room but we're supposed to all sit in a tiny space. read more

This place is my seven year old son's absolutely favorite place in the world. We signed him up for after school classes once a week (they just started doing six-week sessions) and it has been the highlight of every week. He built a go cart with the help of the volunteers here. I'm not a practical person but he is, and this is like being in the tool shed with his great grandad each week - he learns so much and has an amazing time. read more

reDiscover is a beautiful, bright, cheerful spot with a inspiring concept. As a reDiscover partner, I stopped by for one of their parties and found myself winding colorful spools of thread around enormous balloons. With some glue these were transformed into bright colored papier-mache globes that now decorate the studio. Basically, the idea is transforming the nice neat stuff that big corporations would otherwise toss, into the ingredients of art for kids. Which is probably the best way I can imagine of making recycling fun and appealing. I think the warehouse in the back is one of the most magical parts of the space: it's huge and full of inspiring creativity-sparkers. I know local art teachers are always stopping by to shop the bins for neat things for their classes. We run our Tango school in the space during the night and our students are always struck by the fresh, fun energy of the studio. It's like being in a ultra-modern loft created by Peter Pan. If you want to hold a party or meeting in an original, happy-feeling spot, I can't recommend this venue enough. Something about it makes people connect. read more

Stopped in on their Open House Saturday today. My daughter and I spent 3 hours there without thinking about the time. She made a project and I got caught up making a project myself ($5/project). Avalon was there and helped us out with everything we needed and even helped my daughter learn how to use a drill; my daughter is only 7 years old. This is one of the best kids (and for the kid inside) places I've discovered in a long time. This is not a place for toddlers. Its a place for kids and adults who are entertained by tinkering with things. My only regret is not having discovered it earlier. Avalon was so helpful and so nice and so patient. We are definitely coming back. I am bummed that we missed out on the camp for the summer. My daughters next birthday party is definitely going to be here with Pit Fire Pizza next door. read more

I work at a school here in Los Angeles. We hired the crew from reDiscover to come onsite to train our faculty and take the entire 6th grade through tool safety and usage. They loaned us the tools and assisted with all the materials. Since this process was part of a larger design project, we also had the team come back to work with students on the construction of wooden base structures that served as the foundation for group projects. The facilitators at reDiscover are highly skilled in the use of the tools, but also just great teachers. They work tremendously well with kids of all ages and adults too. They know how to empower the participants with knowledge and confidence to use tools, but with extreme safety in mind at all times. We will absolutely use them again in the future. read more
