Within a month of my "recovery," I…read morebegan my long journey through a disease that wasn't named or recognized yet - "Long Covid" - later called Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2. I had a burning, itching rash all over my body. I woke up in the middle of the night gasping for air with my heart pounding. I had severe anxiety attacks at completely random times. I had a lingering, violent cough that made me feel like my brain was going to explode. I had shortness of breath and fatigue that was beyond any description words could define. I had severe "brain fog". I lost my ability to perspire, making it impossible for me to go outdoors in the summer time without overheating. I got perfectly round, eraser-sized bruises anywhere and everywhere for no reason. My heart raced. My oxygen levels tanked. I had double vision. I smelled things that weren't there (like cigarette smoke, kerosene and rotten flesh). My skin felt reptilian. I'm sure there were more symptoms that I can't even remember - but I was afraid I would never have a normal life again and I WAS ANGRY. I went to my primary care doctor. He ran LOTS of blood work - tests I'd never had before. He told me everything was normal, so I was "fine." I went to doctor after doctor. I had a pulmonologist. He learned that my lungs were scarred with granular opacities from the infection. I had a cardiologist who said I had POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome), I had a Neurologist who said I had Autonomic Nervous System damage. I had an infectious disease specialist who told me I had a new condition that they didn't really know much about, but that it might take a long time for me to recover from it - if ever. My PCP prescribed prednisone - which made me gain 12 pounds overnight, but my rash got better. It was nearly gone after the 14 day round of steroids, but then it came back. No one could help me!
