I came in for my first appointment since COVID started. I have to say that I was reluctant because I live with someone that is high risk. However, they have made great changes and arrangements at Blue Spark to deal with COVID. - Appointments are now 1 hour, which allows them ample time to do clean up. I chatted for a while after my cut and they were VERY thorough with clean-up. Absolutely everything was sprayed down, even clippers that I don't think he used. - Seats are spaced 3 apart, so basically they are using Steve's seat and Bill's seat, at least when I was there. - While I was there, I was the only customer in the place. I think if they both had appointments it would have just been 2 customers. There is a rule of only 1 client per barber at a time in the shop, so I waited outside until he came out. The next guy came in right at 4. - Everyone wore masks the whole time. When he needed to do my sideburns he just asked me to take it off my ear and hold it on my cheek. No problem, just took a minute. While I miss the great banter Blue Spark is known for, that will be back one day. We just need to abide for a while and support them so that they are still around when COVID is over. read more

I had a cut from a mr myagi type and while the atmosphere was pleasant and the owner was good to me as well, the quality of the cut was lacking and the wait is extensive. I came around 530 and had to wait 2 hours to get a haircut. I was just expecting better based on the reviews but the stylist missed a handful worth of hair on the back of my head that has been sticking out haphazardly ever since. I gave him very specific instructions but on the top he seemed to do what he wanted and I ended up suffering for it. He also gave me hard lines on the back even though I told him to blend it and specifically "no hard lines on the back". It's just aggravating that I have a perpetual cow lick. I feel that the stylist needs to study wavy/thick hair more and hit the wigs and the books/YouTube. I would really appreciate it if he could have admitted he was not very comfortable at that before I chose him. I could have waited another 10 minutes on the 2 hours. Usually my hair is extremely forgiving but if you leave a fist full longer than the rest, what do you expect. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Blue Spark Barbershop (and am getting due for another, since it was about a month ago). The owner and employees are comfortably aging 80s punks with lifelong ties to Smalltimore, and will engage in spirited discussions with patrons about any number of issues, from the character of different neighborhoods to how a well known local, "Mean John," got his nickname (obvious reasons, actually - but apparently he's really bad with remembering people, too). I went in for a #2 buzzcut and shape up, because I was going to have a picture taken at work. The owner, Bill, suggested instead that I leave it a little longer on top to avoid the chance of glare from the flash. As far as barbering goes, I've never been anywhere else where they gave expert advice specific to my needs at the time, so I was duly impressed. The artwork on the walls is cool, maybe a little racy. A customer's little girl was performing a monologue when I first walked in, about how monkeys like to throw poop. I found it charming, but that probably wouldn't be everyone's reaction. The best way I can put it is that this is a place where a shlubby, middle-aged Jew like myself can go, get a nice haircut, and pretend to be one of the cool kids for a half hour. Just to give you all some background, I'm from the tri-state area so I have pretty high standards when it comes to haircuts. I saw this on yelp and decided to come in. I was very pleased with the environment. I went to my man Steve and asked for a haircut and beard trim. After 30 minutes, I was transformed from caveman to a BOSS. A couple things I like about Steve: 1. He is professional and well mannered 2. He knows what he's doing (10 years exp + went to freakin barber school) 3. He took his time and didn't rush anything. This is very important for me. He asked me before proceeding to go to the sides or before he would trim my beard if I liked it. He then listened to what I had to say and proceeded to do that. I trusted his judgment on a lot of things and was not disappointed. The one thing I wish the facility implemented was shaping up the beard and neckline with a razor blade. But i understand that is time consuming and for the price they give you everything for, you can do without it. I will come back here most likely. read more

Really underwhelmed by this place. Been going to a salon for a while and was looking forward to going to a place that catered specifically for men's hair. Heather cut my hair and I must say I've never had a stylist with a mouth as foul as hers. The f word was almost every other word out of her mouth! I've had bad days too but I never take them out on my customers! Additionally, I asked for a very specific haircut, giving her everything down to the size of the clippers I wanted; she simply didn't listen and gave me a very generic (albeit decent) haircut. I've been going to Blue Spark Barbershop for a few years now and I have nothing but good things to say. Every time I go for a haircut, no matter how busy it is, they always try to accommodate and make me feel welcome. The barbers are always nice and have an interesting conversation(s) going. Bill is especially friendly, and every cut I've received from him has been superb. The location is fairly tiny, but there always seems to be plenty of seating, and the choice of art on the walls is great to look at while waiting for your turn. I also tend to enjoy the music selection, which is usually on the punkier side, and is a nice change of pace from what's usually playing at the average hair cutting joint. How has no one reviewed this place yet. This is the first place in Bmore I have gone to get a haircut and I've gone nowhere else since. I went in with long hair and came out with short hair originally. Since then I've kept it more on the short side and Bill (the Barber) does it just right to keep it at a length where I don't look like a scenester or a hippie before I need to go in for a trim. He also does hot shave cream neck and face shaves with a straight razor. How can you beat that? $16 a cut, which is usually $20 even with a tip. Bill will chat with you about anything from tattoos to old punk rock and biking. He will listen to how you want your hair done and make sure you don't look stupid when you leave and there's Zeke's coffee for the edgers and Jack Daniels and Natty Boh's for the non's. I've been searching for a regular barber or stylist on and off for a few years and I've found what I'm looking for at Blue Spark. The ambiance is great: good conversation, bohs and coffee on hand, a handful of magazines, and enjoyable music. It's a classic barber shop with a more modern feel. Both Bill and Steve are technically superb barbers, which is only where it begins. The first time I got my hair cut there, Bill asked a lot of questions about what I liked, what he could do, and what would work with my hair. I used to cut my own hair but one night, i somehow messed it up so i had to go to a barber shop to fix it. Bluespark is the one with the best review i see on yelp so i decided to go there. Bill took care of me and although i never had the kind of haircut he gave me (short fade), i really liked it. Since that night, i've become a regular customer. Steve also once cut my hair and he's great as well. Didn't try Tae yet tho. But im sure he's good as well. They are all very professional, friendly and the place is clean. Place is absolutely awesome and Bill is the man! Visited the barbershop back in late November 2015 and there was a 2.5 hour wait, which was disappointing but also made me realize that this was the place to get a haircut. Decided to leave and come another time. The holidays came and went and I decided to take the plunge again at trying to get a haircut. I called on Friday to ask about when the best time to come in was on Saturday. Bill answered, and was extremely friendly and let me know that right time was when they open on Saturday or later in the morning. In addition, he mentioned that in February 2016 they would be starting appointments, but would still accommodate walk-ins, as that is the style that has made this establishment successful. After receiving my haircut today, it's safe to say I know why people stage outside the barbershop minutes leading up to the opening. The shop is simple and clean, with plenty of seating along the wall to view the artists at their work, while the sounds of Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra echo in the background. The barbershop has 3 chairs, which helps maintain a constant flow of clientele but also implies that the barbers in the shop know what they are doing, rather than the typical machine line barbershop with 12 chairs and 12 inexperienced barbers. All three barbers were articulate in their questions and precise in their movements. My haircut was perfect and the conversation with Bill was better! If you are looking for a classic barbershop with barbers who know how to cut hair, this is the place! 5 stars to them, and I hope that more barbershops around the city learn that all you need is four walls, a few chairs, complimentary coffee from the local coffee shop down the street, and men who know how to cut hair!
