So this is in my hood, and I never knew it existed until Kelly reviewed it. To which I promptly went over here after work last week seeing as how its on my way home. And then again yesterday. Immediately when you walk in it definitely smells of vintage bliss. I'm not typically your typical vintage/hip shopper, because lets face I wouldn't even know how to wear most of the stuff they sell here. But that doesn't mean I can't appreciate the oldies, which I completely do. I mostly focused on the unique selection of jewelry. I settled on some peacock feathery earrings, to go with my peacock dress :) Along with some celtic earrings. I refrained from buying some lime green sunglasses, although its my favorite color I just don't need anymore sunglasses. My second trip yesterday with my ever so fabulous roomie made it even more fun. This time we checked out the guy section thoroughly. He was blown away. Everything just screamed his name, I'm so surprised he didn't buy anything. But I know he will be back with a friend to do the whole guy shopping with another guy thing without me. The guy section is MUCH better than the ladies to be honest. Completely more stuff of everyday wearable random shirts. Tons of vintage rodeo shirts, awesome! I thought it was rad they were playing Scissor Sisters while we were here. For me this place just screams 60s or 80s costume party. I really really wanted this impeccable purple 80s prom dress for $22 but I need a reason to wear it! This place is definitely on my radar now. I came here yesterday for a 1980s prom dress for the work holiday party "Delicious" is taking me to this Friday. The selection was extensive - I probably tried on twenty dresses - but what's more, the woman working during the early evening shift had endless, endless, endless, endless patience with me and my questions, like how to wear a particular dress or what some strings were for. Since they were slow, she researched 80s accessories I could add to my dress and gave me a hand written index card of ideas like side point tails and jellies to take home with me. Above and beyond customer service; I really wish I'd gotten her name. My dress was also a decent price - original price tags at $35 - and she gave me a list of other thrift shops in Austin for D.'s ruffle prom shirt. I'm impressed and will definitely return. read more

When I come here, I find myself being consumed by the racks. There is so much awesome stuff. And it is reasonably priced. I always spend too much time dancing to the music and looking at the clothes, I was actually late for work one day. Oopsy! I get my sunglasses from here too, they are 8 bucks, and usually last me about a month. I either lose them, or they get broken from the constant use. I am addicted to sunglasses and love the selection they have here. I have never had a bad experience as far as customer service goes. read more

I never have luck at vintage stores. Everything "cool" and "hip" I find are usually 8 sizes too big for me or stained. BUT the boyfriend always finds something amazing...so I knew he'd love to take a visit to Blue Velvet. And sure enough he found a vintage Penguin polo shirt that looked as if it had only been worn by one old man. They had all the usual vintage store stuff.....tons of t-shirts, jackets, boots and scarfs. They also had a lot of go-go boots in neon colors for some reason. Maybe leftover Halloween? Speaking of Halloween...this would be a great place to get some great costume pieces. The girl at the desk was very nice, had punk music blasting and left us alone so we could shop. She didn't even roll her eyes when I tried on huge fur coats and begged the boyfriend to take pictures of me. ha! Blue Velvet is a great place to check out if you've got time to search. I'll admit, I bought clothes more often when Blue Velvet was on the drag. Location shouldn't make too much of a difference, but I don't think they do the cupcakes on Tuesday anymore either. I guess all good things have to come to an end. I still hold Blue Velvet in high regard when it comes to vintage retro goods. The thing I like the best is the prices are reasonable. You can buy a dress 10 sizes bigger, take it to an alterations place to custom fit and the overall cost would still be reasonable - considering that it's custom fit for you, the prices here give it an edge over other places. This place is always worth a visit and it's right next to Epoch. win-win read more

Tiny weird super crowded funkadelic vintage store in an ugly random strip center that ROCKS with cooltitude! I take a van full of teen girls there ALL THE TIME and we have fun trying on vintage dresses and sunglasses and crazy jackets and laugh and good and end up buying great stuff cuz IT'S GREAT STUFF! Seriously - they have a great eye and you can find amazing dresses from the 40s, 50s, 60s and more - really swank gorgeous stuff for a fair price. One month we went so often we LOST a sweater there and a month or so later it was hanging on a rack for sale! The owner remembered us and when I said "Hey I think that's my mom's old sweater that my daughter left here on the floor in a fit of trying on a million things a few weeks ago!" she kindly returned it to us. The guy working here was very chill. When I asked to use the changing room, he told me "yes of course go ahead" in a very friendly tone. I've been to other vintage shops around town with snooty employees and most of the time I get a nod or a dirty look followed by an unenthusiastic "yes". I actually felt comfortable shopping here rather than being a burden on the employee(s). The selection here is pretty good, including the men's section. I bought a 70's-80's green felt shirt with a white v-neck collar and an 80's type sunset shirt with a baby blue collar. They both happened to be on sale which meant my total was around $14. Awesome! The prices are reasonable and there is a good selection of jewelry around the cashier register. The only knock on this place is that it's quite crowded but personally I think it adds a bit to the fun of being surrounded by so many racks of cool clothes. Check it out! read more

Blue Velvet is my favorite vintage shop in Austin. Their selection includes a variety of sizes and styles and their accessories are TO DIE FOR! I'm a curvy girl and I LOVE LOVE LOVE their plus size section- an entire rack of vintage goodies that are just my size. They make it so easy for me that I typically leave with 2 or 3 items. Blue Velvet has different accessories every time I visit, allowing patrons to stay on the cutting edge of Austin fashion. They have a great selection of sunglasses, earrings, headbands, hats, and they rotate them all seasonally so that you can go during saaaaay October and grab yourself a sweet Day of the Dead headpiece, or July and pick up some gear splashed with stars & stripes. The prices are all incredibly reasonable. I have gotten some really cute vintage dresses there for anywhere between $16 to $25. The accessories are priced reasonably as well. They offer a frequent shopper card which will give you $10 off once you have $100 worth of purchases stamped. The people at the front desk are super nice and will give an honest opinion as to whether something is a good fit on you or not. Another perk is that Blue Velvet is located in the super hip North Loop, so you can grab a coffee or tea at Epoch next door, and send your husband who hates shopping for vintage clothes because he's ok with wearing a Homer Simpson t-shirt every day to check out some vintage records at Breakaway records a few doors down while you shop. read more

I love Blue Velvet! If you need a costume, they have a large rack of sparkly 80's dresses, and they usually have a bunch of brightly colored petticoats and boots, but they also have tons of clothes that could be worn to work, school, or on a date. I don't think I've ever left this store empty handed. The last time I went I think I found about 12 dresses to try on! Unfortunately I could only afford to buy one so I was slightly frustrated, but it's nice being able to find a vintage store that carries stuff that I actually want to wear. Lately they've had a huge selection of 50's dresses in all sorts of cute prints so if you're into that style as much as I am then you'll probably be quite satisfied with the selection. If you're a guy, they also have a decently sized men's section. I haven't browsed through it much, but the boyfriend found an awesome blazer here after several failed trips to a few other vintage and thrift stores. The first time I ever discovered Blue Velvet they had free mimosas and live music and were offering 10% off your purchase. I don't know if that was a one time thing or a weekly/monthly thing, but it was fun and one more reason to love this place! read more

Living in South Austin I tend to forget to venture away from all the vintage shops on south congress and south first. But when my friend told me about how she spotted a pair of sailor pants at Blue Velvet, which I've been obsessed with since I had seen hers. Well i just jumped into my car, packed a lunch and headed up to North Loop. I'm kidding! South Austin does that to me. It's adjacent to Epoch which is nice so you can get your caffeine buzz on to power your shopping experience. The owner was there the day that I went in and the pants were on hold and waiting for me! This place has some really really great deals and the owner was super helpful. They have an excellent variety of suits and well pretty much everything! They also have a good variety of scarves and hand bags. I also picked up the vintage shop guide to Austin and I will always remember to venture out north and east more for when I want to have a more well rounded vintage shopping experience. read more

Doesn't the name itself automatically attract you to this place... or is it just me? The name reminds me of blue valentine but not really. I love velvet and the name just came together so well I was impressed. This quant area has a good variety of fun to be had. There's a coffee shop next door and plenty of vintage clothing to try on or go shop for someone else so you can surprise them with a nice unique gift! I do have a shopping addiction though so I could literally, shop, buy, spend, any day and every day.. doesn't matter if it's for me or if I'm shopping for someone else. +I have gotten adorable rings from blue velvet and both ended up breaking but they did have big accent items on them and I use my hands a lot being a hair stylist... so there's that! read more

I agree that you can find a ton of cute vintage clothing here but very expensive. I had a bad experience when I purchased a bathing suit that I was told by one of the sales associates was from the 90s but after some research, found out it was from around 2010. I was disappointed I spent $30 on something I could have just found at a regular thrift store. I normally love supporting small, local businesses, but it's hard for me to move past this incident. read more

This place is such a jem. They have beautiful vintage clothes and shoes, but it's kinda pricey compared to other thrift stores. I'd say definitely worth it for the right piece! Whoa, why was today the first time that I visited this store?! I was walking to my car after having tea at Epoch when a bright orange sun dress caught my eye...and the price tag, it was only $3! I went inside to double check and try the dress on and it fit perfectly! I decided to shop around a bit more, found another awesome dress and some beautiful head scarves. Their selection of dresses is fabulous but at some point I got a little overwhelmed (maybe a little lightheaded from all the shopping) and decided to take a break. But great stuff! And they have clothes for those of us blessed in the hips! I can only give four stars because there were two drawbacks: first off things are a bit crowded and it was kind of cramped inside. Secondly, everything was not labeled with price tags (head scarves in particular) which would have helped me out because I don't know for sure if the cashier just made up prices or if they were accurate. All this to say: good location, good prices, good selection, good times! read more

Blue Velvet is a rockin' little vintage clothing and misc. home furnishing collectible boutique located on North Loop in north central Austin. They used to be located on Guadalupe AKA: :The Drag prior to the fall of '08. In addition to Awesome Original accessory and outfit finds at decent prices, there is fun to be had. Fashion show parties (with models of ALL body types,) live music,special sales events and art openings! I recommend that you stop in some time and see for yourself. I myself have modeled in a number of fashion shows there and attended various other events that have gone on. I have yet to check out their ongoing series "Sounds on Sundays with live music, drink specials and sales on items in the store. This is the best vintage store in town! I can always find something I like here. The staff isn't the friendliest but things are usually where they belong, so you mostly just interact with them when you're checking out. This is a very delayed review, but 3 years ago, I got an amazing wedding dress here for like $35 bucks. Seriously, it was a gorgeous, full length, with train, designer wedding dress that I got tons of complements on. THIS PLACES CLOSES AT 8PM ON SUNDAYS NOT 9PM! We got to the store at 8:15 pm on Sunday and they were already closing. Even though Yelp! said that this was the only thrift store still open in our area (based on the filtered results button). The woman who was closing the store, was very apologetic and offered to reopen the store to let us shop. She was really kind but we declined. I will definitely come back during normal business hours, and I wanted to write this review to appreciate great customer service at a thrift store, which is often hard to find at some of the larger chain stores these days. read more

My favorite store in this city, and possibly ever! Some of the staff is more friendly than others (the one guy who works there is definitely the best!) I always spend about $70 any time I walk in, so I try to not go too much. Of course, I end up going as soon as I get some spending money. Great prices! Some of my best finds have been $10 velvet floral blouses and $20 beautiful dresses, and I got an awesome 80's swimsuit over the summer for like $8. It doesn't get better than that! Oh and I found some very unique boots, still in pretty great condition for $29 once. Also great sunglasses - all of mine are from there ($8.) My boyfriend even likes this store! And that is saying something!! He's founds some nice pearl-snaps and a wonderful leather jacket with some sore of fur lining that zips in/out. My dog also loves the store. The whole family thinks it's a win. read more
