Usually love bluebird for breakfast, so I tried it for dinner. I got the crab cakes for an appetizer and they were full of crunchy crab shells. Not appetizing. Then I got the Mac n cheese. It was okay it could use some seasoning it was bland. Overall not impressed with their dinner. read more

I love their cinnamon roll French toast and their pancakes. If you're not feeling the sweet side of breakfast, their savory dishes are wonderful also. All they really need is a couple specialty coffee options and I'd probably eat there every weekend. I will say, but without removing a star, their Biscuits and Sausage Gravy needs an overhaul. More specifically the sausage gravy. Cook pork sausage, don't drain when finished. Add some butter to the cooked sausage (1-2 tbsp). Coat meat with flour (1/4 cup) and slowly incorporate whole milk (2-3 cups total, sometimes 4). Add flour in 1/4 cup increments until desired thickness reached. Season with some paprika, chili powder (not a lot), salt, pepper and a bit of sage to taste if your sausage doesn't have some in it already. Sometimes I use Cheddar Bay biscuits to be daft. I will start by saying I really didn't like Bluebird in the past but I have had good experiences lately when I've stopped in a pinch. Toda I had the popeye omelet breakfast. The eggs were a little underseasoned but I think that of all restaurant omelets. The hasbrowns were a little salty so they balanced quite nicely. I saw some online pics of mushy looking hashbrowns so asked to make sure they were crispy and they did a great job. My toast was a little too bready and less toasty but I ate it. This place never fails to deliver a great breakfast. They do get busy and a wait is usually to be expected but it's one of the few places that warrants the wait times. Service is always on point and that are able to deliver good service despite the rush. You can see the servers actually care about catering to their customers and move patrons through quickly. There are many offerings on the menu and I can say that you really can't go wrong with anything you order be it breakfast or lunch. A pleasant little cafe in North Liberty. Clearly a local favorite. We visited while in town for Memorial Day Weekend, and the place was packed all morning. Despite the busyness, they got us seated within 20 minutes and the service was quick. My wife LOVED her blueberry and chocolate chip pancakes! She is still talking about them days later. Her mocha was also good. I was less impressed with my Krakakoa omelet. I noticed that many Yelp reviews said it had too much of the citrus cream cheese. It would appear that the message has been heard by the management, because I felt like there was too little cream cheese. And without being able to taste that citrus flavor, I thought the omelet tasted odd. Once I opened the omelet and made sure there was plenty of cream cheese in each bite, it was a good dish. Also, the coffee was very average for $2.45. They did offer me a to-go cup with fresh coffee on my way out, which I really appreciated. The second rendition of Bluebird is a valiant attempt at the recreating the original, but overall has some work to replicate the entire experience. Located in a strip mall up in North liberty, they've got a ton more parking than the IC location and have a bit more seating. The inside is very up to date, but lacks the character that makes the downtown locale so charming. That said, there's plenty of pieces of flare on the walls and they seem to be adding to it at a pretty consistent rate. The menu is a bit different from that of the original location, but does have most of the classics. The Krakatoa omelette, amazing french toast, and some great burgers are all available and out in full force here. Notable additions to the breakfast menu include the buffalo chicken omelette. I tried this beast and it was about a 7/10. Not a ton of meat, but good flavor and something different for the morning. The coffee was good and pretty standard. The servers here all seem to be a little on the green side. Ours was having trouble with keeping orders straight, but was fairly knowledgable about what was available here. The service was a lot slower than what we've come to expect from Bluebird and while I'm sure they'll continue to improve, it seems that the experience is becoming fairly commonplace. We'll continue to come here while they're working out the kinks, but the Bluebird crew is going to need to step up their game if they're going to establish an allegiance from the North Liberty folks. read more

How have I never reviewed this place? Been coming for 5 years because they have my absolute favorite pancakes of all time. Thick and fluffy but maintain their shape & bite with syrup on them. Al dente pancakes. They also offer real maple syrup for an upgrade (like it's even an option?! Do it.) You can order the exact number you want too, 1, 4, 7, whatever! Anything with "krakatoa" on it will be amazing. They should call it "crackatoa" Chicken sandwiches are good, you get and giant grilled chicken breast cooked perfectly with loads of flavor. Cappuccino is really good as is the chai. Waffles are whatever, not worth it when the best pancakes in the world are available. The wait, though...it sucks. Get there before 9 or so and you're fine. Get there after 10 and you could wait over an hour and there isn't much room to wait inside. Lunchtime isn't busy on weekdays, and service is fast! Patio is nice but man it gets hot out there in the late morning, it faces east. read more

We took our grandchildren this time and found the children's menu a complete disappointment. It was an unplanned trip - if I had known, we would have gone elsewhere with them. Terrible service. My boyfriend and I came in for lunch and were seated quickly as the restaurant was not busy- however, after ordering our food we were completely ignored. I asked for creamer for my coffee and eventually had to flag down the waitress after waiting over 20 minutes. We then continued waiting for our food for over 40 minutes until we went up to a worker who was looking over receipts, who immediately told us our food was not being made. Our server then came up and interrupted our conversation to talk to the worker while completely ignoring us. We asked again about our food and the server also told us it wasn't being made (after an hour mind you). She asked for my order AGAIN to make our food on the house but after waiting so long and experiencing such rude, disorganized service, we decided to leave and eat elsewhere. Walked in around 10:30 am in a typical Wednesday morning and were politely asked to wait a moment while they cleaned a table for our family. They promptly cleaned a booth and we were seated immediately. They gave us a menu and crayons with an adorable bluebird picture and fact sheet for our daughter to color. The restaurant was bustling and you could tell they had been slammed earlier in the morning. Our waitress was pleasant and friendly. Our meals did not take long to arrive, just long enough for us all to receive one refill on our drinks. My daughter and I had pancakes. Oddly enough Our daughter preferred my gluten-free ones. Well I didn't try hers, they sure did look good, mine were perfect combination of being fluffy yet not airy. My husband had chicken fried steak and eggs which he said were delicious. I had commented that my ice tea was very good and I liked that I had a different flavor the waitress offered to give me a glass to go which I thought was going over and above on customer service. Waitress also took the time to thank us for being so kind today and it really took me back, because I didn't think that we were being extra kind. I've heard such grand things about Bluebird, but I don't think the grand reviews did Bluebird any favors. Unfortunately, my expectations were much too high. Don't get me wrong, my food was pretty good and it left me full afterwards. However, it was forgettable. Because I honestly don't even remember what I got. On the other hand, the staff was was friendly, the establishment is clean and well maintained, and the atmosphere was delightful. Even for a large group like the one I came with. (There were about a dozen of us) The waitress kept my coffee cup full, and I don't have to tell anyone how amazing that is for a tired gal looking for a caffeine wave to ride through her work shift.
