The food was fresh, and the dishes were plated so beautifully, making your experience feel special. It was an appetizer & small bites kinda evening. The tuna crispy rice had lots of flavor and plenty of sauce if you want something rich. The tuna tacos were the perfect balance of crunchy and refreshing. Oysters were great and came with plenty of garnishes. Beef tartare was so yummy but I didn't get a pic. The tuna tartare with caviar felt like a dupe of Nobu's but not as elegant/upscale. It wasn't the star of the night especially because I already had two tuna dishes beforehand that were very super satisfying. I wish I had some wonton chips with it, but that's my preference. You know when a fatty tuna is a good piece of toro when it triggers your acid reflux however I am not sure what caviar was on top, but it was served with a metal spoon which threw me off because that can alter the flavor of the caviar. But the tartare was topped with such a generous amount. We also ordered shishito peppers, but since they didn't come out as our last dish came out, we had to cancel. Came here on a Friday evening with our kids. Ordered 5 sushi dinners that cost $70 each. Food was good. However, one of the staffers (a young man with highlights in his hair) was EXTREMELY rude. He did not greet us when we entered the restaurant or escort us to our table - he simply mumbled, "your table is over there." He did not bring us menus (we got up and grabbed them ourselves). Then we didn't interact with him until we asked for the check, at which time he basically tossed down the check at our table without any comment. While browsing through OC week, I stumbled upon this gem in Newport Beach called Bluefin. We were hoping to get the OC week menu, but it was only available for dinner. However, I spotted a lunch omakase for $60 each, plus tax and tip. It looked pretty similar to the OC week menu, but with a slight price bump which was still worth it. We started with an appetizer platter (had shrimp, tofu, crab tempura) then moved on to crudo, nigiri platter (with uni and toro), clam miso soup, Chilean sea bass, and concluded with an apple with ice cream dessert. Overall, the food was delicious, and the fish was fresh. We were pretty full after all that. The chef was friendly, but service could be better. We've got really high expectations for this place, but the food was meh and the service was terrible. Everything was just edible. The sashimi was not fresh enough to be impressive, the texture, taste and presentation were all even somewhat below average. As you can see from the picture, the uni looked kinda old from the color, and the other sushi tasted identical, some sort of raw fish slice with a bite of rice, that's it. The sweet shrimp is not sweet at all. Don't even mention the oysters, even McFlurry and McNuggets will be more worthy of your money. The octopus appetizer was a joke, no seasoning whatsoever but some oil drizzles. It tastes like rubber, and dipping it in soy sauce didn't help much either. After the sushi and sashimi we were still hungry, we ordered three tobanyaki dishes, hoping they would fill us up a little bit. The portion was literally for PETS and tasted even worse. The grilled salmon one was incredibly fishy, tasteless and small, probably only 300g. The eggplant one was okay, given the large amount of mayo in it I wouldn't say it tasted that bad. The lobster tail was just some cheese, lobster pieces and mashed potatoes. They were just something that you can even make a better version yourself. If I have to name one dish that I think is good, that'll be the miso cod. It's great as what it is, you've got the umami flavor right and tender meat. The service was a disaster. We came there and was told there wasn't any available seat inside, so we sit outside. However, during the two hours of eating, we never saw even once all the tables inside were full. And after we got our water, we waited about 20-30mins to get the waitress remember our table and started ordering. Even after we ordered, the waitress and waiter still seemed like we were completely left out and seldom check on us, and I came inside hoping to find the waiter to add more items and I saw them chatting several times. We came to Bluefin to participate in their Dine OC menu. When we got there the parking lot was super packed and it was hard to get parking. I got out of the car to put our names on the list and was greeted by a female waitress after a few minutes of waiting. I was the first person to wait to put my name on the list and a couple followed me in a few minutes later. When the waitress responded to me she said the wait would be 15 minutes or so. I was fine by that. When she helped the people who came behind me, she pointed to seats at the sushi bar and told them she is waiting to get those two seats wiped up and they would be seated next. I politely asked her why I was skipped over and she said that I wasn't and that she would seat me at the sushi bar where she just told them they would be sitting. She seemed annoyed that I called her out and flustered in explaining to the other people that they now have to wait 15 minutes. That experience already left me feeling weird. The timing of our food was really slow compared to the people sitting next to us. The quality of the food was not great and they doused their sushi with a TON of wasabi that you couldn't really even taste the sushi. We will not be coming back here again. No part of the service, ambiance, or food was redeeming in any way especially for how much they charge for their food. There are a lot of other great sushi establishments all over OC. read more

While staying at The Resort at Pelican Hill I was craving sushi at 6pm on a Friday. My local friend recommended we come here, which was spot on. We got a table immediately, and my husband ordered the rib eye while I had the 10-piece sushi selection. The nigiri was very fresh--some pieces were customized with delicious special sauces--and included a choice of a full simpler roll. The rib eye was excellent--very flavorful and juicy, as good as it gets. The vegetables were perfectly cooked, great with an added bowl of rice to soak up the sauce. Considering how much dining costs in this area, this is a great value and under the radar. Our friendly table neighbor recommended the duck confit as well (next time!) Being able to see the sunset and sky afterward from the outside tables was a nice bonus. Plenty of parking at the shopping center and friendly staff make this an easy choice. read more

The right half of the restaurant is a bar with sushi chefs behind it. The sushi was great. We ordered all of the Bluefin's special sushi. Very fresh. Didn't detect any fishy odor at all. Some of the sushi served the way it's supposed to be, eaten without wasabi or soy sauce. The service was pretty bad, though. The place wasn't even full, and we waited over ten minutes to get someone's attention to ask for a refill on hot tea. That was pretty bad. The staff are friendly, though. My first time having dinner there last night. We were seated at 7:15. Didn't have reservations, were in that shopping center and decided to grab a bite. From the minute we sat down our waitress kept rushing us into ordering. To a point that my date and I were rudely interrupted every 5 minutes. So I understand if they wanted to have another seating after us. But that wasn't the case. As they close at 9 or 9:30. They just wanted us to order and be gone by 9:00. Not OK. It's not just the food, people go out to restaurants for the experience ,so they can catch up with one another. Wow, can't believe it took me this long to discover Bluefin. Located right across from Crystal Cove (you can see the water if you sit outside) with plenty of parking in the shopping center. The restaurant itself is decently sized, clean, and has a sushi bar which is where I sat. They have an omakase option for dinner, which I wanted to try but I decided to order a la carte as they had some really interesting specials for the day. The sushi dinner was truly an experience - we tried basically one of everything on the chalkboard and the fish was incredibly fresh and just melted in my mouth. Nothing was bad and I actually ordered some items 2-3 times. They also have really reasonable corkage for $25 which is very reasonable considering the location. If you are ordering sashimi, it can get a little pricey, but the quality of fish is spectacular so it is worth it in my opinion. Will definitely be a regular at this spot! read more
