Sushi Roku continues to be one of my favorite sushi spots in Newport. Since im not a big roll fan, their nigiri and sashimi-quality fish keep me coming back. The Bluefin Tuna, Bluefin Belly, Salmon, Yellowtail, Aji, and Crab were all incredibly fresh and beautifully prepared. You can really taste the quality of the fish. For appetizers, the Shishito Peppers are always a great way to start, but the real surprise is the Tempura Brussels Sprouts. Instead of serving whole sprouts, the leaves are individually separated and fried until perfectly crisp, creating a unique texture that's unlike any Brussels sprouts I've had elsewhere. The Gyoza was also well executed and a noticeable step above your average dumpling. Since I don't drink alcohol, I really appreciate their mocktail program. The Smoky Yuzu Margarita is outstanding and easily one of the best non-alcoholic cocktails I've had. read more

Another server walked to the table next to us to close out their bill, again, didn't acknowledge us or notice our table sitting there. About 15 minutes had passed without waters or a simple hello, and I was ready to walk out. My son however got the attention of the hostess. She apologized profusely and sent someone over who apologized as well. Our orders were taken and it was business as usual. This is an upscale sushi place. Ambiance is dark. Cocktails are top notch. Menu is limited and pricey. I ordered the St. Cucumber cocktail. Delicate, refreshing and packs a punch. For dinner: California Roll - made with real crab Senshi - Beautifully plated. I liked that the spicy aioli was on the side. Eel Avocado - tasty Grilled Chicken Breast - decent Another sushi roll can't remember. The sushi rolls came out one at a time. I absolutely loved the sushi I got here. So fresh and tasty. Can't wait to try even more rolls. It was a gorgeous day so we could have sat outside but chose to sit inside where it was more private. They have sushi combinations which is a good way to sample the menu. We shared the Deluxe sushi plate so we had a taste of everything. We also got a tuna jalopeno roll which was amazing. Sushi (2pcs): Tuna Bluefin Salmon Yellowtail Cut rolls: Katana California Lets start with the sushi... Not too bad. I really liked it. Sooo good. I think Tuna Bluefin is the winner. That was delicious. For the rolls..... Katana rolls were sooo good. Very nice presentation... right on point. Very tasty. The best rolls at this restaurant. Yesterday we put a togo order 8/25/26 and got the edamame hummus and a grilled chicken breast to go. The edamame hummus was FANTASTIC, smooth, garlic notes, light, beautiful in color and delicious in taste. However the grilled chicken was mealy, had a weird texture and inedible. We came here on a whim after a long day of exploring Newport. Service was good. The crispy rice was good, but was very thin and small, especially the fish. The tuna sashimi was one of the best parts of the meal. Very buttery and flavorful. The gyozas were bland, the meat didn't taste seasoned at all. The sea-bass on the other hand, was amazing. 2 years later and Sushi Roku is still a favorite for my kids. The service is always 5 stars, the food is consistent, and it's never overly crowded. A few of our favorites are the yellowtail serrano(no Serrano for the kids), a custom roll for the kiddos: yellowtail, cucumber, avocado, topped with yellowtail. Ok, so Sushi Roku isn't bad, it's just not great. We were especially disappointed with the quality of the ingredients, the seaweed had food coloring in it and the sushi ginger was clearly sweetened with artificial sweetener. At their price point, I'd expect much better. Atmosphere was aesthetically cool But, wow was the music terrible- ai generated remixes of pop songs with 130 bpm tempo that gives a "hurry up and get out" vibe. And as for the service- yes, it was efficient, albeit from a cute yet checked out/disassociated server who could really care less about answering questions- never mind guiding to the best things on the menu. Honestly, Sushi on Fire in Huntington is WAY better quality fish, preparation, welcoming environment and overall experience even though the atmosphere isn't as stylish/cool. My bestie and I came here to celebrate her birthday and it was a nice time! The restaurant is beautiful, clean, and spacious - perfect vibe for a special occasion. The wait staff is really nice and attentive, checking on us often and making sure we had everything we needed. I made the reservation with the note that we were celebrating a birthday, and we got a cute little printed card which was a thoughtful touch. The ambiance and service are really great but I felt like the food could have been better. We shared the seared albacore, spicy tuna hanabi, and the senshi roll. The seared albacore had a yummy & tangy garlic ponzu which I enjoyed, but the spicy tuna hanabi was a little blander than I would have liked and the senshi roll was not very flavorful either. The meal was okay but not worth the prices, in my opinion. Though the meal was so-so, it was really nice to be given a birthday dessert on the house. We got some mochi ice cream and berries, and it came out to the table with a sparkler! So fun. Overall - nice atmosphere, friendly service, okay food. OH MY GOD OH MY GOD! this place has the best sushi I have ever had and I have been to a couple of different sushi spots in my life. The location itself is very nice and spacious, the decor is very nice and this restaurant is child friendly, hooray for high chairs It being our first time here we asked the waitress for her recommendations and she did not miss. The Katana and the Gensai were DELICIOUS, just a note she did mention the Gensai role is an exclusive role just for their location. Just grab some lunch at Sushi Roku with a friend. This place never lets me down. The atmosphere was stylish and clearly well loved by the crowd. Service was solid as usual. Robert was great as a manager checking in on us. Of course will be back Sushi Roku has all the elements together in one location from the delicious fish to the great music and atmosphere to well trained servers providing a high-end experience at a high-end location. It was nicely presented and tasted decent, but not amazing. We liked the taste of the Brussel sprout chips but felt the quantity was really tiny because they were literally breaded and fried individual Brussel sprouts leaves. The White Lotus roll and soft shell crab cut roll were just ok. We ordered spicy garlic edamame, which was average, but the spicy cucumber was actually really good and a better starter. The spicy tuna crispy rice was good too but even better was the yellow tail crispy rice. We also ordered the toro carpaccio which was the STAR of the show. It literally melts in your mouth. You really only need to chew for the caviar. Roll wise, I heavily recommend you get the Yakumi. The spicy tuna pears perfectly with the crispy shrimp, and all the sauces on top just make it perfection. Service and ambiance were amazing as well! read more

I am in complete shock that I have not left a review here before. I have been going here often for so so many years! It's a beautiful place to splurge every now and then. Great location in Fashion Island. My boyfriend and I had the 5-course Roku Izakaya Feast. For $78/person WOW was it worth it!!! Came with 2 starters, 2 carpaccios, 6 pieces of sushi, 2 rolls, and a dessert. Seriously still in awe. The sushi did not come with any salmon (my favorite) so I ordered some additionally- but last minute they switched one of the sushi's out with salmon (now having double). I was very appreciative of my server comp'ing the accidental additional salmon without asking!! Everything is delicious, but usually my favorite item is a spicy tuna crispy rice but the spicy tuna at Sushi Roku does not hit for me unfortunately, and I am not sure why. We debated between two sushi restaurants, and I'm so happy that we chose Roku! The ambiance was dark, moody, and romantic. The décor was stylish and beautiful! From the tall ceilings to the bonsai tree partitions that provided peekaboo glimpses of the sushi counter. Our server, Brian, did not lead us astray. Although we were already prepared to order the Roku Izakaya Feast, his suggestions were far more intriguing. Brussels Sprout Chips drizzled with truffle oil. Tempura'd, flakey bruss leaves tossed with truffle oil and salt! Yes please! Fluke Kumquat: delicious! Gave carpaccio. Light and refreshing! Hanabi w/ spicy tuna: crunchy yet pillowy rice cakes with spicy tuna on top. Comes with 4 but wanted 18 Fav rolls: White Lotus roll Senshi roll We washed it all down with an Asahi and a carafe of Heaven Sake Junmai (?) One of my favorite sushi spots in Newport Beach. Genesis is by far the best server here! She provides white glove service and has the best recommendations. She was constantly coming by to clean off our table, and make sure we were taken care of. I brought my friend here as a first-timer and Genesis was super helpful, had the best vibe and was part of our experience at Sushi Roku. You really can't go wrong with any of the rolls. My favorite app is definitely the wrapped asparagus! You can easily make Reservations through opentable. There's a variety of outdoor, bar seating and indoor seating. Very pretty venue with high ceiling and open flooring. Prime location in the heart of fashion island just across the way from Joey NP. Service also fantastic. Food was also very good with quality sushi and sashimi dishes that were just perfect on the palate. Not only was the food a standout but the cocktails were fantastic (one of my favorite cocktails in the area). Omg and yes the dessert was also next level. Here's what we tried over two visits: 1. Sushi: sushi/sashimi were all fresh and quality. Especially loved the Japanese scallop sushi which was phenomenal! Not sure what the green garnish was but very exquisite. Also tried the sea bream, fluke, and crab. All fantastic. 2. Fluke Kimquat: fresh sashimi flavored with a slightly sweet orange/kumquat. Beautiful presentation on a large white plate and garnished with sprouts and edible yellow floral. Was good but not sure how I feel about a sweet tasting sashimi dish. Worth trying once. 3. Salmon truffle carpaccio: fresh salmon sashimi flavored with ponzu and believe sesame oil??? (so gave it a slight vinaigrette flavor which I love) and topped with truffles...yummy. Highly recommend. 4. Hamachi Serrano: fresh yellowtail sashimi seasoned with garlic and yuzu ponzu so again a vinaigrette flavor. Was good but didn't feel it was any different than other hamachi carpaccio dishes Ive tried elsewhere 5. Gensai roll: fantastic. Jalapeño, avocado, and cucumber filled roll topped with salmon and kizami wasabi...the jalapeño and kizami wasabi kicked it out of the park. Must try. Not too spicy so don't chicken out. 6. Tokubetsu roll: delicious cucumber and crab filled roll topped with toro and sea bream and seasoned with truffle pesto. Very good. But Gensai was better. 7. Beef Ribeye wrapped asparagus: as the name describes, about 4-5 pieces of thick asparagus wrapped in ribeye and served sizzling in a small stone . Got to eat I right away to avoid the meat from overcooking and sticking to the stone. Was ok but not as impressive as the presentation. 8. American Wagyu chimichurri: red strips seasoned with chimichurri. This was good but again nothing special. 9. Brussel sprout chips: very good. Crispy and felt healthy for chip snack. 10. Chocolate Volcano l: fabulous dessert. Soft chocolate cake filled with warm and creamy chocolate that oozes out. Served with side of ice cream 11. Cheesecake with side of cookies and cream ice cream. The standout was the cheesecake was hidden inside a sphere of pink cotton candy that the servers will set on fire melting it down to expose the cheese cake inside. Fun presentation. The flavor was mediocre. Worth the show lol. 12 . Also tried several cocktails. The matcha miruku sour (Pendleton whiskey, pineapple, coconut, matcha topped with ube foam) and empress kiss (vodka and sake) was my favorite. I've walked past Roku many times assuming it was a special-occasion spot, and after a last-minute reservation opened up on a date night last week where our original plans fell through, we figured we'd finally try it. We were seated promptly and the atmosphere had a nice energy without being too loud to talk. The menu is limited and leans premium, which was in line with what I expected going in. Service, unfortunately, had some real hiccups. Right after ordering, a plate of yellowtail jalapeno was placed at our table that wasn't ours -- our server had accidentally sent another table's order to us. A few minutes later, the same thing happened with a glass of champagne. Our server was apologetic and thanked me for flagging it both times, but it did make me second-guess whether our own order had gone somewhere else. That worry turned out to be somewhat founded: between the two of us we'd ordered three rolls (two for me, one for him) plus sake, which was mostly mine but shared. Our rolls came out along with the sake, but my husband's entree never arrived. By the time I'd finished both of my rolls, it still hadn't shown up -- when our server checked on us, he said the salmon should be right out, but it still took a few more minutes after that to actually arrive. We'd also asked for a second sake glass when it first arrived, and it didn't actually show up until about 10 minutes later, after I asked again. Food-wise, it was a mixed bag. The spicy scallop cut roll was genuinely one of the best I've had -- fresh, buttery, and beautifully done. The softshell crab roll was good, though not particularly memorable. The Katana roll, on the other hand, didn't quite deliver -- the fish on top didn't taste especially fresh, and the inside was mostly shrimp tempura with only a thin layer of spicy tuna, which felt unbalanced for a specialty roll on a short, curated menu. My husband did enjoy his salmon once it arrived. A couple of other things stood out: despite clear signage at the entrance stating no outside food or drinks, we watched a family walk in eating gelato from elsewhere and sit down without any issue. And overall, guests were dressed considerably more casually than I expected given the price point -- for what we paid, I anticipated a more elevated, special-occasion feel that didn't quite come through. Would I go back? Probably -- mainly for that spicy scallop roll -- but I'd go in with tempered expectations on both service and atmosphere. read more

It did not matter to the person that seated us until we pointed out how dirty there was and then finally someone came and cleaned it before we sat down.
