Sparkling lemonade cocktail
Sue H.

What a lovely meal! Some of our favorite whitefish of the whole trip was consumed here! We enjoyed a sparkling lemonade cocktail (with fresh strawberries) and an Alaskan amber while nibbling on their yummy smoked fish dip at the bar. The crostinis seemed greasy and almost deep fried, but I brought my own rice crackers so I was good. Both spouse and I ordered the white fish with different preparations. I got blackened with parmesan risotto and a creamy chipotle corn sauce, it was fantastic! The yellow beans are a nice seasonal vegetable for something different on both plates. He ordered his fish with an herb compound butter and roasted potatoes. Although we didn't linger, this was a super memorable meal we would gladly repeat.

pleasantly surprised by this place - wouldn't have imagined i could have something delicious and culinarily sophisticated in manistee!!! my salmon was cooked to perfection and my husband's white fish was also spectacular. perfectly seasoned and not too salty. i finished the plate clean! the veggies were also still crunchy and not overly seasoned. love the parm risotto too. so creamy and perfectly al dente. i tried a bite of french onion soup too and that was really good. would love to get that next time. had a very pleasant smokey flavor and it wasn't overly cheesy and greasy. the table didn't seem to like the seasoned heirloom potatoes - i like the flavor but it could be less salty and also more crisped up as it was a bit mushy. the place is huge and clean and the servers were very attentive. we had a party of 10 with a high chair for an early dinner - and we were very well accommodated.

Nice place next to water in Manistee. Their menu is very diverse and fairly priced. I ordered Brussels sprouts for appetizer and walleye piccata for entree. The fish was perfectly cooked; great balance of acidity with a delicious bed of risotto and some crunchy green beans. I could probably eat that everyday. The restaurant is kinda quiet and the staff is nice and attentive. To top it all of the view from the Resturant gives you all the feels, right on the water and the sunset was a perfect way to end the night!

French onion soup

On a quick little trip to Manistee, we stayed right down the road from BlueFish Kitchen. The location is prime for downtown and right on the water (though we didn't have a view of it from where we sat). The inside is absolutely beautiful and well decorated. Everything we ate was quite delicious and we were not disappointed. Our server even made a couple comments that we "hated" the food because we devoured it so quickly! While fast eaters, it was quite good and we enjoyed it for a quiet dinner. Both the Walleye and the Bolognese were really good and had hefty portion sizes. The french onion soup was a little lackluster, but it's definitely a hit or miss item and I would have loved for the broth to have a little bit more flavor. All in all, it was quite a good spot for dinner and if you're passing through town, you should give it a go!

Nothing vegan on the menu, but just ask. They produced amazing vegan tacos for us. Fair prices and great atmosphere!

Then a wonderful Mexican type salad with ample: sautéed onions and peppers, corn, black olives, cheddar cheese and a spicy chipotle ranch dressing. I added grilled chicken breast and it was very tasty and filling. My sister enjoyed a Nashville Hot chicken sandwich and she said it was also fantastic. An ample size chicken breast breaded and sauced well, lettuce, tomato plus a firm but soft bun that held up nicely. She had tots as a side which made for a great meal. Our server was very pleasant, personable and attentive at just the right times. The ambience was a rich wood decor: floor, walls, booths, tables and chairs. But a warm atmosphere with black accents, comfortable seating. There were stairs to enter with railings but I might have missed a more mobility accessible entrance. I recommend calling if this is a detail you need. They're great for groups as the place was packed on Mother's Day when we first attempted to eat there. So glad we went back and I'm sure this will be a sure spot to eat when we're in town again.

Pains me to give less than 4 stars to any business but the experience was just okay…read more General info: parking is plentiful unless they are busy. It's one way for driving in so you'll have to U turn if it's full. They do not take reservations. You can check in at the host stand and they will take your #. They ask that you wait downstairs on the lower level where there is a bar window and plenty of seats/tables and a nice view of the lake. Food we tried: - homemade clam chowder tasted great, interesting mix between a traditional New England and manhattan chowder. Not creamy, more brothy but not red. Overall good flavor and amount of clams. - perch dinner: Fine, but for the price, you can get better elsewhere in town - Mussels: broth was delicious, the amount they give you is quite generous (nearly 20 on mine!). That being said, to improve, they should be careful not give you unopened mussels on your plate. I had 3. Ambiance: - I would say it's worth it to sit outside if you can. The way the sun shines in the evening, the back is quite shaded and it's not as loud - we were seated inside near their big window and due to the way the sun hits their upper skylights, it was blinding for half our table. It was extremely unpleasant though we didn't get the full extent of it until we were seated and ordered. When we asked about changing the tables, the staff just said sorry, no can do, and asked just to rearrange ourselves awkwardly around half the table to 2 people per side. Very disappointed with this "solution". - its very loud inside - they have high top tables which looked proportional to their chairs. The lower tables are actually quite tall and are paired with normal chairs so it's a very awkward fit Families: they do have high chairs, boosters, and a kids menu that is not posted online. Due to height of low tables that are actually tall, the high chair does not reach. Overall, if you need a sit down restaurant to eat fish and chips/seafood or to accommodate a group and you're willing to come early since there are no reservations, this would fit the bill. But there's definitely room for improvement.

Then, you pick up your bag of food at a little window outside, and then find a place to eat outside or take it home or to your hotel or wherever. If you're dining during decent weather, you can take your food to one of the tables located in the plaza. So, now you know how Keeper's Fish Shack works. Hopefully, I've saved you from sounding like a bozo like me, when I said, "This is a to-go order" when you order. Because duh. All of the orders are to-go orders. I ordered the blackened North Pacific Cod Tackle Box. Tackle Boxes come with fries, hush puppies, coleslaw and sauce. The fish was very tender and flaky, and the spices they used were just spicy enough to give it oomph. The hush puppies are a definite must-order, and I say this as a person who has neutral feelings about hush puppies. My husband got the Fried Shrimp Tackle Box, and he said that the shrimp were perfectly fried: not too much batter. They have a kids menu here: your choice of fried cod bites or chicken tenders. We got one of each, and my kids really liked them, especially the cod bites with a little tartar sauce. The kids meals come with apple sauce and fries, but no drink. When you go into the shack to order, look to your right and you'll see refrigerators with lots of different beverages, including local Michigan beer in cans. It was nice to drink a local beer while enjoying our fish meals outside in the plaza. When we visited, the farmers market was happening in that same plaza and there was live music, too. That's the best way to experience fish at the beach, if you ask me.

The food was served quickly and piping hot. I got the fried perch tackle box. I really wanted to add a piece of another fish like blackened mahi mahi, but they declined. With my tackle box and my husband's, the total was upwards of $50. The portions were small, especially the fries for that price. With it being a walk up restaurant, you aren't paying for service. While the food was good, I probably won't make a second trip.
