After reading some reviews, I brought by dog here with some apprehension. The decision was made when the after-hours recording of my regular vet indicated I should call Veterinary Specialty Care for an emergency. I won't tell you to discount the negative feedback left here, but I would ask you to consider if the negative review is a result of the quality of the care, or simply a veiled complaint about the cost of the care. I, for one, was extremely satisfied with both the staff and quality of care provided to my dog who presented with a urinary obstruction on a Sunday morning. Service was prompt and Dr. Williams provided excellent emergent care which she explained clearly. She called twice after I left-- unsolicited-- just to let me know that my dog was doing fine. On Monday my dog received surgery at VSC after my regular vet recommended they do the procedure. The surgeon, Dr. Averill, called me after his examination to explain what he observed and how we should proceed. He was a pleasure to speak with. Once the surgery was compete, he called me again. Lastly, he called me the next morning at 7:30am to update me on my dog's condition. In my opinion, VSC provided unparalleled care. From the receptionist to the surgeon, they operated like a well-oiled machine. As for cost-- yes, it is going to be more expensive than your regular veterinarian. Just like going to the emergency room is more expensive than going to your regular doctor. Certainly the cost of operating 24 hours a day with the appropriate veterinarians, techs and reception staff is going to be reflected on your bill. I do enjoy quality service with a lower pricepoint at my regular veterinarian, but they close at 5:30, are not open on Sunday and are not on call. The surgery center is impressive. They have a lot of diagnosis tools at their disposal that my vet doesn't have (such as an ultrasound). I felt the cost of surgery was commensurate with the services provided. While I love my regular vet, I would have no hesitation bringing my dog back. read more

Our dog, a ten year old Scottish Terrier became ill soon after we arrived in Mount Pleasant for a five week vacation. We were referred to the clinic by a local acquaintance. THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE NORTH CHARLESTON LOCATION. I CANNOT AND DO NOT SPEAK FOR THE MOUNT PLEASANT LOCATION. I cannot even begin to quantify how livid I am with this vet. I brought my 13 year old Manchester Terrier in for vomiting, panting, tremors, and constipation/diarrhea over the course of three days, on and off. My dog is my child and I know every pet owner understands that love. I feed him a raw food diet, I always have, and it never changes. I knew he hadn't gotten into anything in the yard, but knew he had eaten children's crayons three days before. I started giving him rice because his stomach was upset, and he still was not getting better. I woke up at 8am to his panting as well as numerous piles of vomit and loose stool. I immediately found this 24 pet hospital, called ahead, and hopped in the car with my pup. We were taken back around 9:30 am, with one pet family ahead of me to see the doctor. They took him back and I did not see him, hear him, or get updated on him for THREE HOURS. Finally, the doctor came in and literally hemmed and hawed about all of the possible causes of the symptoms he is presenting. It was literally nothing any person with an iota of a brain cell does not already know about vomit, fevers, and bowel issues. He then promptly (first time all day) wanted 800 dollars to do further tests. In three hours, the doctor tapped my dog's belly and scratched his head. I told the tech I had no intentions of spending more than 200 and she immediately came back with a bill of 200 dollars for a shot of medicine, seven days of antibiotic, and a special canned food to feed him that is apparently vital to his health and current GI condition. Again, I feed my dog a raw food diet, and they gave me two cans of chemicals that probably is not legal to call food. They charged me 200 dollars, kept my dog away from me until 12:30 pm, and gave me literal shit to put in his stomach to make him better. I cannot express how livid I am. I want to get this business shut down, and have filed a complaint with the BBB. NO ONE SHOULD BRING THEIR PETS HERE. They will charge you an arm and a leg, keep your pet away from you, take up the whole day, and pump your pet full of chemicals. I wish I could convey my anger from this experience. We were sent to this facility by our vet because our cat required emergency surgery that would save her life. Our vet called VSC and apprised them of her condition, told them what was needed and sent us with blood samples. When we arrived our cat was in critical condition. We waited almost 3 hours for her surgery because they never called the surgeon to come in until 21/2 hours after we checked in When it was over we were told everything went well and to go home. The bill was $3,000 for their services which I paid before we left. In the morning we were called and told that our cat had died. Two months later I received a bill for an additional $ 622 . I called and spoke to their billing department and was told they had forgotten a few items. I refused to pay and now Im in collections. I think $ 3000 is enough considering I have a heartbroken family and a dead cat. read more

This is a warning to anyone who will or has Veterinary Specialty Care in Mount Pleasant. On July 5th our 5 lb Morkie Joey was trying to urinate but couldn't . We rushed him to the Emergency in Mount Pleasant. The attending Vet, ANN MARCARIO, she felt Joey and he had a stone which had to be surgically removed. She said the surgery would be $3,000 and the examination including the insertion of a catheter would be $1240 payable in advance. On our way out ANN MARCARIO told us she would be anesthetizing Joey briefly so that the catheter could be easily inserted. At 4 AM I got a panic call from ANN MARCARIO telling me that instead of the catheter she had opted for cystocentesis when is a method of extracted urine from an animal by holding their front and back legs down and inserting a a needle in the bladder. My Joey went into Vagal shock. if this wasn't enough she did it a second time this time Joey dangerous heart problems depression inappropriate vocalizing and hypothemia. in addition he had brain damage and couldn't walk. in 2 hours my puppy went from anactive guy who walked a mile every day , ate like a horse , played catch for hours and kissed and loved everyone he knew and met. In the end ANN MARCARIO told me that Joey would never be the same. The surgeries would cost $10,000 for starters and he would always rely on meds To survive . My beautiful boy was only 5 days away from his 1st ,first birthday. read more

My rating is actually a minus infinity. I used to love this place. I had been taking my furbabies there, virtually since they opened. One of my dogs, who had cancer, was a patient for over 4 years; I owe some of their doctors with that 4 years. Another of my dogs was one of their patients for 6 years; again I owe one of their doctors with that 6 years. I WAS one of their biggest fans. UNTIL I FOUND OUT. Prior to March 2020, my experience with their ICU and charges based on doctor orders versus charges based on what was actually provided/received were limited and non-existent, respectively. March/April 2020, I found out about two of their practices which are very disturbing/distressing. First, but least, I was being charged for medications and services that were not actually provided and being double billed. Second, AND WORSE, their claim "The ICU is staffed 24 hours a day, allowing us to continuously provide ....care your pet might need." is misleading, at best, and simply not true, at worst. "Continuously provide" implies constant monitoring, which is very, very far from the TRUTH. In my specific situation, they somehow equated "continuously" to ONCE in a SIX hour period. I believe they failed to provide even the minimally acceptable standard of care for a critically ill patient in their ICU; which resulted in the death of my dog. My dog was critically ill: during the 12 hour period before his death, vital signs were taken ONE time; he was checked only 3 times. During the 6 hours before he was FOUND DEAD, he was in a crisis situation, based on vitals taken about midnight (and an, "after-the-fact", email I received from their office stating the doc was concerned about the vital signs); yet, nothing was done, his vitals were never retaken and he was rechecked ONLY ONE TIME; after which he was FOUND DEAD. I was there, in the waiting area; they were NOT busy, there were no other clients in the waiting area and this was prior to the COVID "lockdown". Incredulously, they later stated that it was my fault, because I did not get an MRI sooner; even though, I was told by 3 other doctors that based on his symptoms it was a brain tumor, which was not curable. It turned out that it was encephalitis; which I was told should not have taken a Neurologist to diagnose the possibility of encephalitis - only confirm via MRI. At the point in time my dog was in their ICU, his condition, although critical, was curable. If they would have provided adequate monitoring and/or recognized that he was in crisis situation, as shown by his vital signs (midnight), and acted accordingly, I do not believe he would have died. I used to be one of Veterinary Specialty Care's biggest fans - UNTIL I found out. If any of your furbabies have died while in their care, please ask for the "internal" records (the records that show date/time of medications given, procedures and what actually happened). Compare all medications/procedures against those for which you were charged. Check the number of times your furbaby was checked and vital signs taken. Report any irregularities. read more

If I could select additional stars, I would! I cannot sing the praises of Veterinary Specialty Care loudly enough. This was the best medical experience I have ever had and that includes anything I have ever had done for myself or my dog, Roma. Roma is the love of my life and it was a very difficult decision to have several lipomas removed and also a cyst between her toes. She is 11 years old and I felt that removing the large lipoma in her armpit would increase her mobility in years to come, but was very afraid of having her go through the surgery at her age. Dr. Ludwig not only consulted with me, but answered follow-up questions and concerns by email prior to the surgery. We were met with love and genuine care and concern the day of Roma's surgery. Dr. Ludwig called me 3x that day to give me updates and allowed me to take Roma home that evening. Dr. Ludwig's skill at removing the large lipoma was amazing. I was in the medical device field for 14 years and have never seen a more precise excision. It is rare that you find a group that has equal skill and caring and I feel very blessed to have found those qualities in this clinic. read more

Couldn't have asked for a better place to take my dog. The minute I walked into the emergency room they immediately took my dog back and started blood work. They gave me many options for treatment and a price range for the treatment I chose. Dr. Marscher was amazing and kept me well informed with a call every morning and every evening to let me know how my little girl was doing. All the staff from the front desk to the team caring for my dog were amazing and friendly. I felt very comfortable leaving my dog for supportive care for a couple days and wouldn't have wanted her anywhere else. read more

I am not happy to be writing this review. I have used VSC before, and been pleased with them. However, a string of recent experiences with my beloved pet have stayed with me, filling me with anger at a time I need to stay positive and focused on helping my little guy get better. I feel I need to get this out of myself so I can move on. My complaint is due to the treatment I personally experienced, not the treatment of my dog. We were referred by our regular vet to VSC when our dog had a fever of unknown origin, and the initial attempt with novox didn't improve. After our dog was taken by the technician to the back, something they do whether you like it or not, the internist came in and basically said "I recommend we do this, this, this, this and this." She was just matter-of-fact, direct and ready to act. She said she would have a tech come in with an estimate. Meantime, we could discuss. Well, the tech did come back a few minutes later with that estimate. As he was putting it in our hands he said "So, what do you want to do?" Ummm... read the estimate, for starters. Flat out honesty: We were getting the feeling these people were thinking about the money over the animal. They definitely weren't thinking about how we were feeling - helpless as our family member was hurting, confused by why all these tests were needed, not being given the explanation or answers in a gentle, bedside manner. With trepidation, we went the conservative route. Did three of the five tests, and waited. Well, they weren't the right three tests, of course. We went back a week later, with no improvement. This visit was the last straw. First, when the tech tried to take my dog into the back, I denied her. I said I did not want my dog leaving my sight. Oh, but she had to weigh him, and there was no scale in the room. (How convenient.) Against my better judgment, I said she could take him to be weighed only, but I wanted the doctor to do her physical in here. Five long minutes later a different tech altogether came back with my dog and said the doctor saw him while he was being weighed. Wow... I was absolutely floored. They outright ignored my wishes and right as the client. When the internist came in, I was greeted with the same deadpan treatment. Oh, well no wait... this time the internist spoke to me as if SHE wanted to help my dog, but I didn't. Now, she didn't out right say that, but her tone created an unspoken accusation as if I was not as concerned as she was. That was it. I was done. I was able to get referral to Charleston Veterinary Referral Center in West Ashley, who treated our dog and us wonderfully. I will never go back to VSC. Even if I am in Mt Pleasant and have an emergency. I will travel all the way over to West Ashley for my pet before going here. In hindsight, and this is specifically why I am writing this review: Had we been treated gently, patiently and kindly by the internist and her techs with clearer explanation of why they wanted to do all the tests they wanted to do, we probably would have done them. The treatment we received led us to believe they just wanted to get as much money as they could right at the start. The salt to the wound was the lack of respect for my wishes and the accusatory tone that I didn't really want to help, essentially, my child. I take the blame. Fully. I shouldn't have let my emotions lead my decision making. Kind of hard to not, tho, don't you think? It is important for VSC to understand that the treatment of the human is extremely important to best lead to the proper treatment of the animal. We need to trust in you. We are distraught, nervous, scared and sad over what is happening to our family member. You are the specialist who understands and can help resolve the issue. We need to feel safe giving our pets to you. I did not. read more

DR. BIANUCCI AND HIS STAFF ARE AWESOME! We had an excellent experience here when our Big Beau needed surgery for a Ruptured ACL of his left rear knee. He is a big dog with very high energy. He can be difficult to handle. They did an awesome job. Each person I encountered was paying attention, acting professionally, very skilled and they were being careful with my animal. I believe animals can tell when they are in good hands and things go much easier for all. Beau knew! Today, we took him for his 6 week X-Ray and he is healed! From Dr. Bianucci whose dedication was incredible and gave us his cel number and encouraged us to call, to the staff member that answered the phone each and every time I called!!! I never once got a voice mail, and I made good use of their phone lines. Whenever I called, I was met with competency and kindness, along with a solution to the problem. We have had the greatest experience both with the ER (the staff and the doctors) and with Dr. Freeman who is now my 9yr old hound's neurologist. We thought we were going to lose him 5 weeks ago due to seizures and now he is doing better than we ever expected. I find their prices to be very reasonable considering we had to get ER care in NC for cluster seizures back in October and paid so much more. Dr. Freeman is always willing to provide advice and recommendations for my pup who has been having some trouble with side effects of his many medicines. Since my dog wasnt in critical condition they didnt feel the need to take the extra time to assist with him. Doctor came into the wrong room which was only one of my decision in never returning to this facility. I ended up cleaning my own's dog wound because "they didnt have time because their were more pet waiting." Terrible bed side manor, extremely expensive when they didnt do anything for my pet, plus I had to go to CVS to get supplies to take care of his wound on my own. This is the most amazing place! Our french bulldog had a heat stroke and was in really bad shape. The staff worked so hard to take care of him and he survived. Every time we visited the staff was so quick and friendly. They care so much for the animals and really kept us posted. Our 7 month old Golden was diagnosed with severe hip displysia in October of 2013. We were referred by our Vet to Veterinary Specialty Care. Dr Schlicksup and the rest of the VSC team have been awesome! They genuinely cared for Cooper, and gave us REAL information and let us make the choice as to what we thought was best for Cooper... Not steering us a certain direction. After having Cooper's left hip replaced, they were more than happy to see us if we had a "scare" or any concerns, at any time. Unfortunately we had to visit them again. When your dog is suddenly having an epic nosebleed late on a Sunday night, your heart may be telling you to drive from Mount Pleasant to West Ashley for a better emergency experience, but your head is telling you to GET HELP FAST. So back to Veterinary Specialty Care and the usual mixed bag/clusterf#@!. The good news - they have fixed the doorbell and we were able to get right in to the building. The young woman at the front desk was barely articulate and in fact walked away from us while we were explaining why we were there, leaving us confused and wondering what was going on. She did return with a very helpful vet tech who luckily took over. After they got the bleeding stopped, we opted to keep our dog there for a few hours so they could keep an eye on him and we paid our bill. When I returned at 3 am to pick him up, I was told that I still owed the amount that I had already paid. I explained that I had already paid (and I am willing to bet that this place NEVER lets anyone walk out the door without paying). More confusion ensued, another employee was called in and it turned out they were trying to print out an invoice. I again explained that since I'd already paid I already had an invoice, had not asked for another invoice, and just wanted my dog. I pulled the invoice out of my purse and magically, my dog appeared a few minutes later. I'm not sure what sort of billing system they use, but obviously it works well for the clinic, since this is the second time in a row that I've had a billing issue. read more

We brought our puppy to this vet hospital and was very disappointed in the way they treated her. First they did not let us in the exam room with our puppy while they were treating her and we could here her yelping non-stop. When the technician came in afterward giving her shots and she stated she acted up because of her breed. She handed her over and my puppy started growling and barking at her. We have a regular vet and this has NEVER happened before. I am convinced but don't know for sure that she mistreated her. Also, we have no idea weather or not the doctor was in the exam room and administered the shots. read more

I have been taking my diabetic cat annually for blood work here for several years. Over two weeks ago I took him on a Wednesday to the new Summerville office. With Covid I had to wait outside. When they put my cat, in his carrier, back in my car almost immediately I smelled crap. When I looked at him he was covered. I had to ride an hour home with him covered in his own crap. They put him in the car like that. I called the office and was told by the staff that the office manager was off that day. They told me someone would reach out to me about this. I've waited over two weeks before writing this and all I've gotten is crickets. Nothing. I cannot believe they brought my cat out to my car covered in crap. I would never do that to anyone. He's a good boy and did not deserve that type of treatment. I will not be returning if this is how they treat our pets and their customers. If you take your pet there. Check it before you leave when they put him in the car. They evidently don't really care very much for your pet if they allow this to happen. read more

I was waiting for 3 hours at 11pm when they knew I had to be gone for a flight at 4 in the morning was finally seen, the doctor was nice and said he thinks its not just a scratch recommended tests and blood work and follow up with a specialty doctor after seeing the specialty doctor only after being recommended to do so, the doctor said there was nothing wrong in the first place and it was exactly what I thought it was going to be just a my cat ran into or bruised the eye. They asked if I got blood work done or chemistry test and I said yes I paid for it however when they called over to 24-Hour vet they said no I did not have a CBC done yet i was charged for and they were unable to to fax over the CBC that I know I had done but they don't have record ofSo the optometrist never saw the CBC I paid for specifically because the doctor said that opthamologist would want to see it in the first place if something was under lying happening. So all those tests were unnecessary and so was the optometrist visit in the first place so $530 later all that money is wasted and management took a week and a half to figure out everything and don't offer me any kind of solution to the unnecessary money I spent on Specialty Care and testing. Frustrated to say the least. read more

While this is a much belated review, we still want to say how terrific Vet Special Care is and how devoted, compassionate and caring the Doctors and staff are! We had a 8 month 'run ' with our much loved kitty, Georgie Girl, who had a rare cancer tumor in her throat - we had several emergency over night stays and ultimately we lost her. The doctors gave us good practical medical care without 'over selling' - which we very much appreciated - while at the same time, giving us all options to buy time. Often while there, I saw emergency " rescue" animals come in,from wildlife to those with no owners, and their help, and caring compassion was just the same. Everyone there gives 100% and always with a smile, hug and a lot of heart! We are lucky to have them in our community. read more

What an exceptional place. We had an emergency on Sunday night at 11:30 and rushed our very small dog to VSC. Dr. Williams assessed the problem, took x-rays, and shared her concerns. She was on top of the problem as was the night staff. Our dog stayed and was seen by Dr. Freeman (Neurology). She called me that morning, explained the problem, described our options and suggested a cautious approach. She is professional, caring and knowledgeable. How fortunate is it that so many specialists with the skills and education needed to care for sick pets are in one place and in SC. AWFUL EXPERIENCE FROM START TO FINISH! MARIA, the vet could have cared less!! My 17 month old dog was having labored breathing from tons on mucus in his little head. I had taken him to the vet the day before and started him on some medication but the next night he was so bad, I was afraid he was going to stop breathing so my only option was to take him there. The receptionist was emotionless. When someone finally took him back, the receptionist comes to me and tries to get me to sign this form that says I'm giving consent for the doctors to do whatever they want and it's going it could cost between $400 and $600 and if I decline then they might not be able to get proper care. She was insistent that I sign but I knew he had a cold so I declined... Second-guessing myself feeling like I was being cheap. After waiting forever and talking to the guy next to me who was also very discouraged by the place and then talking to another person who had been there before and was also very discouraged but had no other choice, they called me back and the vet tech acted like she was half asleep and not interested. Finally when the vet, Maria, came in... who looked like a child... had nothing to offer. I asked what she did to him and she said nothing, she just checked his vitals and they had already done that when I got there. I asked her about a few options and she acted like she didn't know what I was talking about. One was something my vet had mentioned the day before and she literally threw her hands up and said "oh I don't know how to do anything like that." I said "I just came in with my dog who is very sick, spent two hours waiting and you are not going to help me?" She said she could stick tubes up his nose, put him under anesthesia and check that way. I told her no way she was going to do that. Then she said there was nothing else she could do. She started to open the door as I picked up my dog, I said "so you really are not going to help me and this is an emergency clinic! She opened the door and said "I can't help you" and quickly walked out and shut the door behind her. I went to the receptionist and I told the people in the lobby what a joke it was and I waited another 15 minutes before they charged me for my visit and then this morning when my vet opened they squeezed him in and he is on more medication and I'm hoping he will start feeling better soon. After reading some of the other reviews, I realized that they are all about the money. I started crying the minute I left the building and went home and pretty much watched my dog breathe the rest of the night. What a terrible place with such unprofessional and unqualified people. I guess it's not fair for me to make that a blanket statement so I will say... this applies to the staff that was there last night!! Way too expensive...charging me for surgery gloves and other items I'm sure are in the cost of doing business....

I had heard many times over the past few years about a place in Mt. Pleasant, SC, that Vets send animal patients to receive specialty and emergency care. I never dreamed that I too would need their services. My seriously ill Yorkie (family member),was referred to an emergency clinic in Myrtle Beach which turned out to be a nitemare (read my review on Yelp). I made the hour plus drive to Veterinary Specialty Care. I am so VERY glad I did!!! Their knowledgeable Doctors, staff, and state of the art facility saved my angels life! I can't say enough about their professionalism, speedy service, and just all around great way they handled a very stressful time for me and my Yorkie. I will never think twice about where I will go, should I ever need emergency/specialty care. read more

I HIGHLY recommend Veterinary Specialty Care. I had to take my Cavalier to see their neurologist there and he was extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and caring to my situation. Not only that, but he has kept in touch to make sure things are OK and has shared his knowledge with others. The staff has been so helpful whenever I visit or call. I can't thank Dr. Cook and Klein enough. My cat was extremely ill. I was told by my vet that he would need an ex lap to find a possible obstruction after obtaining a Xray. I declined the surgery and took him to this clinic. Not only was I seen within 10 min, but their entire staff is more than sweet. The girl at the front desk got my poor sick baby water and a litter box for the wait, the ultrasound tech was so patient and careful while holding him and Melissa (vet tech I think) was so sweet and gave him hugs and kisses and explained the d/c instructions very well. The doctors are so knowledgable and gave me multiple options for his plan of care. It is expensive but all healthcare related diagnostic are. If anything were to happen again I am more than confident that Moose (cat) will be cured in a timely manner. Thank you guys so much :) they even called to check in on him. The ER waiting area is very clean with tvs, snacks, and drinks. Separated for felines and dogs double thumbs up. read more
