Walked in with our dog who had been short of breath and they made us sit in a 10x10 room with our dog for over 90 minutes!!! When I went out to ask for an update, they said they couldn't specify as to when they would get to us as their were "other" priorities! Since my last review of their poor service. I had no option to take my dog to an emergency hospital to read the biopsy results that showed mass cell cancer. They ended up putting my dog down. I couldn't get to speak to anyone, until the end. A week after the results were in. I had to contact my local vet to get a copy. This clinic never communicated with me about the results. I called many times and was passed on. I hope this never happens to anyone. Please don't use this clinic. It was the worse experience I ever had. Thank God for this service & these wonderful dedicated people who work around the clock ensuring our pets receive the emergent care they need. So.. Open 24/7 located near Trader Joe's in Mt. Pleasant. I called for advice prior to taking my bulldog & she ended up staying overnight for IV fluids and medication. She received fantastic care as I did, the pet owner. I was fully informed of the assessment, plan & goals of care. I was informed of my options & cost. It's not cheap but it was necessary and that I am okay with. The place itself has on average about 15 vets on staff, several staff & a beautiful waiting area. Loaded with comfy seats, TV's, drinks and snacks. I couldn't be happier with the service. We took our dog in for emergency care. He was completely broken out in huge welts all over his body. Our primary vet could not get us in and told us to go to this place. Immediately when we go there the rude receptionist asked us why we didn't make an appoint with our regular vet. I told her we were sent to you, she begrudgingly handed us paperwork to fill out. She also rudely made it clear we would have to wait, obviously it an emergency room, waiting is expected. After she took our paperwork she gave it to the doctor and immediately came back out to us and said they do not treat skin problems or this kind of problem. Why are you an emergency vet if you can't handle emergencies?? We then went to another vet in west Ashley and they confirmed it was an emergency and were able to treat us. DO NOT GO HERE! There is a much better emergency vet in west Ashley that can treat emergencies and they are not rude. read more

Doctor's don't do unnecessary tasks to just spend money, they care and explain the facts and the risks after the initial exam to give a good diagnosis. If additional tests/procedures can/may be done, this is discussed with the pet owner first. We have been here before and know that they handle emergencies very well, but only once the pet is taken back. They genuinely care about your pet. One item to improve would be sharing what priority your pet has when you register (injury vs sick). Everyone's pets are important and it would be nice to know where you are in the queue to be seen, since several 'sick' pets came in after us and were in/out before my dog was taken back. read more

I wasn't sure about the emergency vet from my initial phone call to the location. Young lady answering phone was short and unfriendly. I was in a panic with my dog not doing well. There was no compassion or empathy or concern of what was going on with my pet. It was the closest emergency vet so I still went there. I'm glad I did because the rest of the crew was outstanding. Loving, caring, patient, empathetic, and even cried with me even though they had never met my baby before. We felt like we were with family. They never spoke down to us or judged us on our choices. My dog has been experiencing some weird symptoms that my regular vet thought needed a neurological consult. I called around and was feeling discouraged bc I couldn't make an appointment at a local clinic until December and felt the need to justify why my vet wanted my dog to see a neuro. However, I called veterinary specialty care and was able to get in to see the dr that same week. Bc of my dogs advanced age I had made the decision not to do any higher levels of images or anything too drastic I just wanted her to be comfortable. The staff and dr especially, came out of the gate with this same mentality. I didn't feel as if I was pressured into unnecessary testing or anything. They all took the time to answer my questions and never once did I feel rushed. I was super anxious (as was my dog) but they were so kind and patient that we both felt comfortable and heard. My cat required a full mouth extraction. This practice took excellent care of him and even called during the surgery when they found questionable lesions in his mouth. The surgeon asked if I wanted them biopsied or not, if I wanted to delay the rest of the surgery until the biopsy results were returned, or did I wish to proceed with a whole mouth extraction that day. They are extremely professional and extremely caring. I would highly recommend him for any pet that needs specialty care. read more

Decided to wait until tomorrow and go to my vet. I can understand the wait if there were a lot of serious cases but not the filth and lack of courtesy when there were three people sitting at the front desk. read more

I took my dog Bacon in for care. Bacon has had chronic pain her entire life and we've seen drs in Atlanta, Oakland, San Francisco, and San Jose. Never before have I been treated so poorly. I had told the Dr of Bacon's medical history in which she replied, "Impossible!" and then treated me like I was the one who diagnosed my dog. She saw Bacon was so uncomfortable that she was unable to sit. The Dr did nothing. She offered no advice or help. She was absolutely unempathetic. She didn't ask if I needed refills on medicine. I also asked about rehab centers. She said they existed, but offered no advice or referrals. After receiving absolutely no help, I was hit with a $90 bill. I was planning to have Bacon's MRI done at this establishment, but now I'm going elsewhere. 1) I am afraid she won't get the compassionate care she needs. 2) I don't want to give this establishment the large amount of money for an MRI Take your dogs somewhere they'll get better care. read more

I was extremely disappointed with my experience with the team with my dog. My local vet said he needed surgery and would contact Veterinary Speciality Care about getting him in as soon as possible -- my dog went in first thing the next day. I was told by the staff at Veterinary Speciality Care that I would get a call once he would be ready for surgery, and then another call after. I got a call after the estimated time that he was supposed to go in, and asked when he would go in -- they said he was already out. They admitted they made a mistake and forgot to call me. After he was released the next day, I never heard from anyone on follow up to see how he was feeling, bleeding, etc. I had to call a few times to try to get the surgeon on the phone -- she was surprised that no one called me to follow up and admitted it was yet another error on their part. I dropped him off with an Rx he already had, and wasn't given the right amount when he was released, so I was charged extra for stuff he already had. I called and emailed a few times to communicate clearly with the staff about how upset i was about the overall experience and the utter lack of follow up. There seemed to be a lot of miscommunication with the team members on who was to call me back (even though I left specific staffers voicemails asking for a a call back). After days of frustration, I finally was able to get the owner on the phone. For almost an hour, he pretty much laid into me when I recounted every issue that happened: the missed call before surgery, the lack of follow up post procedure, poor internal documentation on my dog's Rx/follow up, etc, giving me the wrong amount of medication and overcharging me for it, the poor/non-existent follow up to my outreach, etc. He finally said "well, we did you a favor getting your dog in on a Friday because that's when we do emergency procedures" -- i reminded him that it was not me who requested the surgery and that it was not an emergency. There was no apology -- just that he would follow up and get back to me once he reviewed tapes, spoke with staff, etc. I called two (2) more times in the weeks and months after to follow up to give the owner a chance to explain any more that happened and he never called me back. So I gave him various opportunities to apologize and/or rectify what happened and weighted that before deciding to write a review and tell others what happened -- I wanted to make others aware of the situation. Its nice to read that others had a nice experience there but I do not recommend anyone takes there pet there if they are worried about how they will be treated once the company gets their money. Note: No need for the staff to send a follow up message via Yelp as I won't be in contact with them again as the owner showed no respect or care for the stress and anxiety the team there caused me and my pet. read more

They outlined all the costs after an initial evaluation and worked with us to decide the best measures for our dog. I brought my dog here because she ingested raisins late at night. She threw up in the car on the way there. They would not see her until I called poison control and opened a case there ($75). Then they took 2 hours to get her to a vet. They told me the only option was to administer IV fluids and monitor renal values. This strikes me as either a scam or incompetence. According to petmd, the easiest treatment is to induce vomiting and administer activated charcoal within 2 hours of ingestion. The process was complicated, expensive, and drawn out to the point that my only option was to either take her home and wish for the best or spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on treatment. It just seems to me that I brought her in quickly enough that the treatment should have been fast and cheap. I took her home, and she was perfectly fine. read more

Took my dog in at 11:27am and he didn't get seen until around 4pm and we didn't leave until 8:00pm and out dog spent the night and I was told I had to pick him up by 7:30 am,so I have to wait over 8 hours but they can put me on a time schedule after having to take out a credit card to pay.this was my 1st and last visit.they never really gave a diagnosis after all day and all night.i called a few days later because my other dog had the same eye condition and asked for a refill and they said I had to bring that dog in before I could get eyedrops. Dr. Cook for recent and Dr. Bianucci as well as Dr Ludwig; plus, a third Dr. sorry can't remember name, in the past several years (at least 12) all were friendly and especially helpful in understanding the issue with my pups and the home instructions. The techs and support folks? Always friendly and still professional. I have never had a bad experience at the Mt. Pleasant or Summerville location. Only "negative" was wait on JAN 24 due to several pup and other patients. However, understand priorities are needed., so not really a negative as they did update me. Bottom line? This clinic has gone progressively downhill since it was owned and operated by local vets. Now it is owned by Blue Pearl - which is a part of the giant corporation Mars. So much for local, personalized care. Our visit (one of multiple visits) lasted over 8 hours to complete bloodwork and take two radiographs. After all that time the vet recommended hospitalization to give Iv fluids. What on earth were they doing for 8 hours that Iv fluids could not have been completed? Blue Pearl is now run by corporate metrics laying out revenue per visit and profit per vet and recommending excessive expensive tests and hospital stays. The staff is fine - it's corporate management. It's a well known fact in the local veterinary community. Blue Pearl's concern for profit over pets has distressed many vets who have decided it was best to resign, resulted in severely understaffed clinics, low staff support ratios, poor employee morale and poor care management. The pets and pet parents suffer. There is one remaining quality vet owned emergency clinic - charleston veterinary referral center - where the vets still run the practice. Charleston must demand a better standard of emergency care! read more
