It reads, "The Bankhead Highway, often referred to locally as the "Dallas Pike" east of Center Street and the "Fort Worth Pike" west of that road, played an important role in Arlington's future by connecting it to Dallas, Fort Worth, and the rest of the U.S. The Pike, formerly known as the old Dallas-Fort Worth Road, was actually in use as a Wagon Road long before Arlington was platted. The Road, now Abram Street, being the busiest stretch of Highway in Texas, was designated as State Highway 1, by the Texas Highway Department, which was formed in 1917 to create a state highway system. "In 1920, as part of the "Good Roads" project, the Bankhead Highway system, named for John Willis Bankhead, was designed as a portion of the new National Auto Trail system, running from Washington, D.C. to San Diego. The road mostly followed State Highway 1, and would be built along Division Street in Arlington. The chosen safer route was entirely new construction, 25 feet wide and eight inches thick, covering 5.84 miles from the Dallas County line to the west side of Arlington. By design, rail crossings were eliminated including "Death Crossing" west of town. The Highway was declared open to traffic in Nov. 1922. "Over time, the Highway has expanded and some of its early features no longer exist including Johnson Creek Bridge's decorative handrail and a pedestrian underpass at the Masonic Home. In 1926, State Highway 1 was redesigned as U.S. Hwy 80 and again as State Hwy 180 in 1991. The Bankhead Highway opened up business opportunities to many smaller towns along its route, increased commerce between east and west Texas, stimulated automobile transportation, and increased tourism. Overall the Highway was a major factor in transforming Arlington from a small town to a thriving community." You will see a chain link fence and a public road outside of the fence with houses along the road. Notice markings on the curb, white stencil on green, on which sections of the cemetery are named. You are looking for Sunset 18 .There is a small mausoleum named Shannon at the fork in the road. When you find this you are within a few feet of your goal. Lee Harvey Oswald's grave is on the side of the road towards the row of houses. The grave is about 20 feet from the cemetery road. You cannot miss it. It is reddish colored, next to a grave marked Nick Beef. No other graves are adjacent to Oswald's. You can make a long day of touring Lee Harvey stuff: His grave, the bar down the street called the Ozzie Rabbit Lodge (the nickname of Lee Harvey Oswald when he was in the army), then over to Dallas to see Lee Harvey's boarding house at 1026 N. Beckley, then home to watch "War is Hell", the movie which was playing in the theater in which Lee Harvey hid. Yeah, ghoulish. Whatever.

Lee Harvey Oswald was a former US Marine who "allegedly" assassinated President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. It has to be allegedly because there was never a trial. Oswald was fatally shot by local nightclub owner Jack Ruby in the basement of the Dallas Police headquarters two days later. Please note that this is an active cemetery so be respectful. This marker is on the southwest corner of the Old Dallas County Courthouse (Old Red) square. It reads, "After Reconstruction, white southerners began adopting laws and codes, known as Jim Crow laws or black codes, that affected everyday life for African Americans. One instrument of enforcement was the threat of violence as well as actual violence, including lynching. Although more often associated with rural areas, lynchings did occur in towns and cities. In Dallas County between 1853 and 1920, five white males and six African American males were lynched by mobs. The lynching of Allen Brooks on March 3, 1910, was an example of strategic Jim Crow violence. "As recorded in major newspapers, court records and personal testimonies, Allen Brooks was a 60-year-old African American domestic laborer accused of assaulting a girl in the home of his long-time employer. Local law enforcement attempted to keep the time and location of the pretrial hearings secret, but a local newspaper published the information and a mob subsequently convened at the county courthouse. Measures were taken to secure the building, but the crowd which had gathered shoved past and into the building and pulled Brooks to the second-floor window. The mob placed a rope around his neck and threw him from the window. They then dragged Brooks a half a mile down Main Street where he was finally hung from a telephone pole near the prominent Elks Arch at Main and Akard Streets. Following this horrific event, witnessed by an estimated 5,000 people, many citizens called for a state special grand jury to investigate the lynching, but no court convened and no one was held accountable. Although no other lynchings were documented in the city of Dallas after 1910, other forms of racial discrimination and oppression persisted." The floral decorations are exquisite and are updated every Saturday. They are something to behold. The door man Antonio is amazing and greets customers each and every time in a manner that is refreshing and brings a smile to everyone he comes in contact with.

It's well lit and with a lot of natural light and open space. It's neatly organized and well noted with descriptions of what your looking for.. there is spacious parking outside. The bathroom was clean, nice, roomy and not cramped lol. They are social distancing and everyone entering is required to wear a mask. They have hand sanitizer available if needed. The lines are moving steadily for the early voting. We've been here since 8:15 am so it's not bad. They have plenty of helpful volunteers and workers to help with whatever question or concerns you may have.

Unveiled in 2015, this artwork by Brent Nelson Baggett is titled "Pioneer." It is in a small…read morecourtyard at one of the exits of the Dallas College building. The sculpture stands about ten feet tall on a short pedestal. It is a twisted stack of straight forms, almost looking like a helix of books though it is hollow inside. Nicely lit and a pretty series of colors, I was not able to find an artist's statement or such that explains what they were trying to do here. The Bushong Log Cabin is a more recent addition to the historic park the City of Grapevine has…read moreplaced at 201 Main Street. It was recently placed on its new foundation and the fireplace completely redone. It was built in approximately 1871 by George Emanuel Bushong and his wife Elizabeth Ann. It was originally built just a few hundred yards from where it currently stands. The Bushong's lived in it on their property where they also ran a Saw Mill, Flour Mill, and the town's very first Cotton Gin. The park it is located in is open to the public and free from the generosity of the city of Grapevine. Definitely worth the trip if you are in the area. My young ones were fascinated to see how people lived.

Designed by local architect H. A. Overbeck (1861-1942), the steel-framed building, finished in 1915 at a cost of $585,982, is clad with granite, terra cotta, and brick. Exhibiting Renaissance Revival styling, the upper six floors housed the jail. Designed for 200 prisoners, two large district courtrooms on the second floor suspended jury trials during summer months until air conditioning was installed in 1951. In 1964 Jack Ruby (1911-1967) was tried in the east courtroom for killing assassination suspect Lee Harvey Oswald (1939-1963). Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1986" This is marker number 6667 and it was erected in 1986 by the Texas Historical Commission. There is street parking nearby and a small cafe in the ground floor.
