I stopped in at BlueZone the other day as my ski boots had become exceedingly painful and was fully prepared to buy a new pair. As it turns out, thanks to Nate's help, the boot that was the most painful had an extra footbed in it. Nate had me try on the boots after removing the footbed and gave me a few tips when putting them on. He then helped with sizing me for custom insoles, which were likely to help even more (and were a fraction of the price as new boots!). Bonus: Nate was also very helpful when I struggled to get the cuffs of my slimmer jeans down past my calves. We definitely had a good laugh and workout in the process. read more

Yesterday we finally met face to face with GUNNER at your Truckee shop. I had spoken with him numerous times on the phone and found him very knowledgeable. We were looking for two season rentals for my grandchildren. They were at that awkward stage from youth sizes to adult. Not having the body weight to engage the hinge in a boot that was much bigger, I was very concerned. We, the whole family are expert skiers and the kids are on their way. I can ski like a bat out of Hell but deffinately needed help with this fitting, also tech wise I'm a little lame. GUNNER was everything I needed that day and more. The kids fixed up. I was so afraid with this transition and his expertise showed. He was everything you want in an employee, knowledgeable and kind to the grandma of 77 years old but ski instructor of 25 years. Long time business local ski and mountaineering shop. Always had a great reputation for ski boot fitting at a reasonable price. The day I was in there a couple weeks ago they had 20% of all ski wear. Including Arc'teryx stuff, I thought that was pretty good. Excellent help ski knowledge, we'll on everything they sell. Awful customer service. I had a boot fitting appointment 2 weeks ago and I was turned away at the door since they forgot that I had an appointment. After laughing about forgetting my appointment John made me wait for 2 hours before I was seen. Again, this was NOT a walk in. 1 party was seen before me even though they entered the store 45 minutes after me. John's excuse was because it was "store policy" since these folks had bought skiis from the shop the day before. It is a terrible store policy to treat certain customers better than others for the sole purpose of how much profit was made on one customer over the other. When I confronted John about this, he proceeded to laugh it off and say that "it totally wasn't because the other customers gave him a $100 tip". After a party cut me, I was made aware that I was not being helped right away because there were more "urgent projects" that needed to be made by an 8 AM deadline that was the next day. When confronted about this, I was gaslit by John when he told me that "I am putting off urgent projects for you", regardless of the fact that I had an appointment with him 2 hours prior. This was one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had, and I definitely will not be coming back here again. read more

I stopped in Granite Chief with a small hope they would have something to replace my boots. That means their responses on Yelp are just an act to make it LOOK like they have good customer service but (secrets out) they surely don't. They did not take any action in correcting a $900 mistake they made with my brand new skis. Is it really that difficult to take pride in your work/business? It is for this shop. This place desperately needs to be shut down. I've never known a more uneducated and fake group of employees that think they know everything. Granite Chief has been serving the Truckee and Olympic Valley community for over 40 years. Same owners the whole time. They have an excellent and knowledgeable staff. Their boot fitting and tuning services are very good and they do overnight service most of the time. They have good parking and are well stocked on all items, both hard and soft goods. They are one of the top two shops in North Lake Tahoe. read more

The owner clearly cares about his business and they've done a great job of threading the proverbial ski store needle over the years: * The gear and fashion stays on trend and rarely slip into close-out yuck. * Sure prices are high, but they're not stupid. * The staff is knowledgeable and not too gnar to help you without intimidation. * It's a place you can go to to BUY and also a place worthwhile for SHOP mode too. I've been doing seasonal ski leases for kids for ten years+ at GC and they've always been fair priced (~$75 for boots all season long) and offer new or lightly used equipment most of the time. Will say, they handle seasonal rentals way better than one-day rentals. (Would recommend going to the hill for the latter.) read more

I rented a board from here and prices were good but my binding got loose and fell off because they forgot one of the screws that lock on it. From here I would have given a 5 star review because it was not a big deal. The manager/owner even offered to compensate. I lowered this review down to a 3 because when I asked one of the employees he stated that this happens all the time, even with boards you own... I have a snowboard, I just did not have it with me at the time. When I ride my board that has never happened and should never happen (A binding coming off). He essentially said it was my fault. Then when i was talking to the owner for ways he could compensate me, the same employee interrupts and asks "do you want a sticker?". Really unprofessional on his part. I suggest you give a talk to your staff about how being a sarcastic asshole is not good customer service. read more

I highly recommend Bluezone Sports I ordered skis online back in August 2021. They were the last pair on sale from last season that were the brand and size I wanted. UPS misplaced them in transit. I contacted the company through their Facebook page using the Messenger feature. After much back and forth communication, I finally received a new pair of skis from the company. The skis are the latest style for the upcoming season, and the company did not charge me for the upgrade, honoring the price I paid for the lost skis that were on sale. The only reason for the delay was because Bluezone Sports did not receive the upcoming season's model from the manufacturer until October 7th. Beginner needing boots. I tried to use the online appointment system, could not find openings for anyone for weeks out - so I drove 45 minutes to set up an appointment in-person. Store was not busy... cashier/associate responded "you need to use the online tool." Me: "I tried that with no luck so I've come here in person to make the appointment." Her: "Well, that's how we set up appointments... -pause-". I started to say thanks and simply leave... after a longer awkward pause she offered to "let me see if I can help you" - appointment set for two weeks out. "What type of skier are you?" Me: "Beginner" Her: "Ah, ok.. we fit for advanced skiers, even olympians" I shared that I know I'm a 25.5 - is there a possibility you'll have that size in stock? She responded that I should call HER tomorrow and she would check. Now.. she wasn't helping anyone and the place was pretty empty... so, not sure why she could not check right then. I went down the street to a small specialty shop, they only fit and sell boots. Very knowledgeable fitter fit me, molded inserts, and mounted bindings (yes they had my size in stock...). Was out with a new setup in 1.5 hours. And.. the boots were great Lange's, $100.00 less than online. I'm sure their fitters are top-notch, the facility is amazing. I highly recommend Granite Chief If you're wealthy or just need to know you got your gear at a 'high-end' shop. Otherwise, you can do a lot better very close by. read more

When I called asking for help to have my girlfriend fitted for demo skis she ran to the rental room and came back with names of skis that weren't even on the website yet! She walked me through all the specs of the skis and what my girlfriend would need. I've usually found what I'm looking for and The staff is really helpful - Unfortunately both my husband and I have each now had a few negative interactions with the manager. No sense positive customer experience. We've also observed him speaking in a condescending tone to his staff. They've been great to work with but I have a hard time supporting a business that treats customers and staff with condescension and rudeness. I'm very happy to have heard about Gunner as a boot-fitter and his experience fitting dancers who also ski. Despite his packed schedule, Gunner was super kind to fit me in pretty last minute to double-check things with my boots. I'm also very appreciative for his recommendation to do a light heat molding to help out my right foot which is arguably the troubled child due to prior injury and being a bit bigger than my left. In terms of the shop more generally, I'm not sure if it would be my first choice for purchases outside of an end of season sale solely on account of price points. There did seem to be a lot of people there for tuning though + they are in a super great location for anyone in need of a last minute tune up or repair. read more

Employees are fairly polite and helpful, but there are significant standardization issues between what each of them advertises. My husband and I were told that if we demo skis with Granite Chief, we could apply the price of the demos towards new skis. They did NOT say, however, that the demo price would apply only to full price skis AND that only two full days of demos would towards a new pair of skis! We've rented demo skis at least six times! NO ONE TOLD US THIS. We were also told that if we bought skis from them that bindings would be half off! Another thing that has been bothering me is that I returned a sweater and lost the receipt, so the manager had to lookup the transaction on his computer and claimed I got 20% off when I paid full price! read more

I visit BlueZone often, as I'm new to Tahoe and have to get all the gear for resort and backcountry! Each trip I've made to this site, I've received incredible service. The manager, Darby, has been attentive and helpful, without ever being pushy. Staff are knowledgable and friendly. I rented resort boots and skis for the season and went in to see if I could get a smaller pair of boots. I was instead offered education in ways to make rental boots fit. Staff suggested I purchase a pair of inserts which worked like a charm (and I get to keep when I return the boots!) I always feel good leaving BlueZone, with reliable equipment and a good experience. read more

I find Granite Chief to have a wide variety of ski equipment, clothing and accessories that more than meets my needs. Brands I like that are usually in stock Spider, Roxy, ArcTeryx, Marmot, 686...descent assortment of goggles, skis, boots poles...9 yards...plus base layers, insulators and outerwear....some casual winter wear though not what I'm usually looking for... RENTALS: In addition to friendly staff and the array of seasonal gear the best draw by far is the kid's season rental pkg - boots and skis $150 through May of the next year. I use their daily adult performance pkg - Blizzard, Vokl, Technica - with recommendations for the type of snow and terrain you'll be hitting.. $40 per day. GC has implemented a new rental application process, self serve pc, which helps save time if multiple people are waiting. Still mostly a manual process however, just gets you started - my assessment is they take extra care with the fitting process so you get exactly what you need. Trade off is this can take time. (Read some poor reviews in this area, I think its best to make time and enjoy the wait if it happens.) Prices are in line with other shops but less than what you'll pay at the mountain. The onsite performance tuning shop is staffed by professionals, I had them tune our equipment last season. Right off 80 in Truckee, its easy to pick up suppliez on the way to Northstar and points NE and convenient to drop off rentals on the return leg. All together a great shop! read more

I used to LOVE coming here. They always had a good selection and friendly staff. So recently, while up visiting friends, I stopped in to look at some goggles (Christmas gift for my roommate's daughter). The goggles I ordered from another company had failed to come in time and I wanted to check out what BlueZone had. You know, maybe buy here and cancel the late order? The woman I encountered when I first walked in was just unfriendly. I said hi and she just stared at me. Later when asking about goggles she just seemed really annoyed that I was there and asking questions at all. Another man came and told me I could open whatever to check out the goggles, which was helpful. But he also had an annoyed and unfriendly vibe. It was their last hour of being open so I understand they were probably tired. But it wasn't like I had walked in 10 mins before closing. There was still an hour left. It was actually so unfriendly in there it felt uncomfortable being there. I looked around, but I left because of the vibes and didn't purchase anything. I like supporting local shops, and maybe I'll give them another try sometime. But it was pretty sad. I really used to enjoy this store. We stopped by BlueZone this past weekend to check out their huge labor day sale, they had discounts on last years winter gear as well as most of this years summer gear. The staff was friendly and helpful and gave my husband good advice on a helmet, and also helped us pick out a helmet for our little one! There was plenty of parking as it's in a small shopping center, we were able to park right out front even with the sale going on. We also found out they lease ski equipment which might be a good option for our kiddo when she gets a little older! read more

I got a great deal on the boots she recommended to me compared to the prices I saw online. In general the employees there are very nice and knowledgeable. Mansplaining, explained I wasn't going to leave a review, but this was one of those experiences that sat with me after, and the more I thought about it, the more I realized I needed to say something. When I entered the store, a man asked me if I needed help with anything. I said I was interested in bike rentals and he said they only rent demo mountain bikes. He then said, in a sarcastic tone, "You know, the kind that only go off the pavement. Mountain bikes are for off the pavement." Never mind that I've been mountain biking since I was a child, this was an inappropriate comment to make to a customer, particularly a young Indian woman. The assumptions were there! After he explained that they don't do half day rentals of any bikes, I asked him politely if he knew anywhere else to go. He said "I'm not in the business of knowing what my competitors do." The tone was again, clipped and rude. Never mind that, if he doesn't do half days, the other stores that do them aren't technically his competitors, he could have given a polite answer. Now, there will be those of you who dismiss this review when I say this last part; fine, this isn't for you. But for those of you that are listening closely and paying attention to the world: THESE are the small moments in which prejudice happens and we need to speak up. I'm a young brown woman and that man was an older, white man. Of course, you'll say, how do I know this was prejudice? I could be wrong. But, remember, I've lived a lifetime of these small cuts and it gets old. Instead of going here, I'd suggest you patronize a woman-owned store down the street: Bike Truckee. read more
