I had a very loud squeak on my bike and they had it for 4 days, replacing the handle bar stem. $95.00 later with a $5.00 tip (my bad because I paid before riding the bike) I didn't even make it out of the parking lot and nothing was better. The squeak was louder than ever. I brought it back and they did not care, offering for me to bring it in again. Well, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me! I brought it to Start Haus and they solved the problem with perseverance! Do not use this shop for repairs. read more

6/1918 There are only 4 houses closer to this place than mine, conveniently located! Requested 2 tube changes, with goo, and a new back tire at Noon on Wednesday. "Sure, we can take a look at it, will be ready Sunday." Ouch, can I bring it in Sunday or Monday after "traffic" dies down for quicker turnaround? "Bring it in Monday for Friday pick up". Needless to say I took some time to get me my stem remover functional. Had my bike ready for "free" in time for that night's ride. Quality of work/craftsmanship is doubtful. read more

I have rented from these guys in the past and loved them, but this past weekend, they, for lack of a better term, were a bunch of dicks. Walked in at about 9:05 am hoping to get a bike to rent. I understand reservations are recommended but that's why we came in early. Walked in and were ignored for about 10 minutes - fine, they were helping others, I can wait. When someone came up and asked if we needed help, this was the exchange. Me: Hi, looking to rent some bikes. Dude: (in a kind of harsh tone) For what? Me: Oh, sorry, Northstar. Dude: (to another dude) We have anything? Dude #2: Nothing that will fit you guys. Me: What? Dude #2: We don't have anything, you should reserve, thanks. Me: Ok, thanks. I get it. Tourists are assholes. As a person that lives in a town that is frequented by tourists and as a person that owns a home in tahoe that is also frequented by tourists, I get this above all else. But shit, there are ways to break it down that would have informed us cordially that we should've made reservations ahead of time. But alas, we took our business elsewhere and rented 6 bikes with full gear. I used to come to Cyclepaths to rent their Santa Cruz bikes but I have found another provider that is closer to Northstar and a bit friendlier. We rented standard mountain bikes for $40 bike / day. The bikes were in great condition - the gears and most importantly, brakes all worked. The helmets were adjustable and actually fitted my head. I wish I had knee pads on as I got a nasty bruise from biking on a rough trail, but I would definitely looked like a loser and uncool. The staff were nice and knowledgeable, giving us a quick overview on how to use a mountain bike and recommending a good beginner trail. However, I would have appreciated it if they brought the bikes up and down the stairs for us. If you don't have a car that can fit the bikes, you will have less options in terms of trails since the store is located in town. We had to ride about 1 mile out of town to get to a trail...it was painful with a number of uphill peddling. I enjoyed the workout, feeling bad-ass and fearing for my life. read more

I rented six fat bikes for riding in the snow, with friends. Cyclepaths did a great job, getting the bikes ready based on the size of each of us, having them ready right on time and advising us on where to ride them. Their service was friendly and very knowledgeable - and at $45 per day per bike, very reasonably priced too! Highly recommended. read more

Rented two "demo" downhill bikes. One by Rocky Mtn. and one by Norco. At pickup time the Mechanic (older guy on Web Site wearing red hat) didn't want to move the shifter and brakes where I wanted them for single finger braking, so I had to do it myself at Northstar. Issue with My Front brake (needed to be bled). My buddies bike had a loose headset and the back breaks wore down to the metal. They should have changed them before renting. (ruined his day of riding) Calling these bikes Demo's is just a lie. No one would want to demo the worst (Cheapest) version of a bike. They both had the Rockshox Domain. This fork is a P.O.S.! Calling them Demo's rather than just rentals is just a lie, aka, an excuse to charge more. When we showed the tech the issues, he just shrugged his shoulders. No apology, no discount / refund. Nothing. Don't waist you time with this shop. Find one who cares. We won't be coming back. read more

Rented DH bikes to ride at Northstar, since it was cheaper and reputably they would be in better condition than Northstar rentals. My wife and I reserved bikes about a week beforehand, and were charged for the rental. Once we were at Cyclepaths we found that our reservations had not been kept, and nobody was able to find any sign of our reservation forms. Luckily I have my transaction history on my phone, and was able to prove that I had been charged by them for the rentals. Unfortunately they did not have the bikes requested available, so instead of riding two Norco Aurum's, one small and one large, we got a medium Aurum, and some leftover KHS small. However inconvenient that whole ordeal was, at least the staff was friendly and did what they could to sort out the mistake. The bikes themselves worked reasonably well, I will rent from Northstar next time to do a comparison. The Norco's suspension got a little overwhelmed on some of the faster sections, and the front brake had some pump to it. The fork's stanchion as well had some major marring to it, though that didn't seem to effect performance. I was also running SPD's instead of flats, one of which broke. The KHS was an absolute lead weight of a bike, surprisingly heavier than the larger sized Norco even. So it goes. In the end we did get bikes to ride, and the staff was friendly and got us on the mountain. There were issues however with the reservations and some of the equipment. read more

I planned on riding Northstar and renting a downhill bike here. When I walked in and asked to rent a bike for Northstar the worker was extremely rude with attitude and laughed and told me they do not allow their bikes at Northstar. I was bummed because I have rented here for Northstar before but then decided my group and myself would go ride some local trails instead. I continued to try and rent a bike when the worker refused to rent us bikes due to the fact I originally said I wanted to go to Northstar. I told him my plans of no longer going to Northstar and riding elsewhere but it did not matter. He said he would get the owner if I'd like and said yes please. He then went to the back and came back out (same worker) and told me he would rent me a bike but not a downhill as I requested. This place is a joke. The customer service is horrible and not worth saving some money on their cheap prices. I drove to incline village and went to Village Ski Loft. Trust me just go there in the first place. They had the nicest staff and better bikes. Exact same prices too! read more

They have decent bikes at okay prices, but the owner is not nice. We rented a bike for my son and he set the seat too high and wouldn't cut the seat post to make it lower. The bike was too big for my son and made riding Northstar a terrible experience. When bike returned two hours later, he would not adjust the price at all. I guess he does not value return customers. This is the ONLY place in Tahoe we frequent when we have a cycling need. Greg, the owner, is terrific and has decades of local knowledge. The shop is staffed by a small team (usually including Greg) -- they can get stacked up during busy times but are friendly and very capable. Most important, though, is great customer advocacy that I haven't found elsewhere. I ordered a mountain bike through these guys last year and have had a number of mechanical issues that I felt were due to manufacturing defects. They have gone to bat for me with the manufacturer(s) each time, and have got agreement to get a warranty repair (most recently rear wheel and dropper seatpost). My last trip to Truckee, I saw Greg sitting by himself 45 minutes after closing time at the Mexican restaurant next door. Said hello and learned he was there waiting for a customer driving from South Lake who got the shop hours wrong but called and was in need of assistance. Greg offered to stay around and resolve his issue. This is a great local small business run by a dedicated owner who works really hard for his customers. read more

Last week, while on vacationing outside of Truckee I was riding my Santa Cruz Mountain bike. All of a sudden I felt the rear triangle give way. I looked down to see that one of the pivot bolts had failed. After walking 7 miles back to camp I looked to see if there was a Santa Cruz dealer in town. I called Cyclepaths Bike Shop of Truckee. Greg the owner answered and said to bring the bike in. After Greg looked the bike over he saw that the carbon fiber at the chain stay had cracked and the bike would not be repairable. Greg proceeded to hook me up with a great deal on a rental to salvage my vacation while he called Santa Cruz to see if they would warrantee the frame. Dylan, one of the shop employees took that extra step to properly fit the rental bike to me. So for the next few days I was riding a killer Santa Cruz Bronson when I received a call from Greg that my brand new Santa Cruz frame was on its way to the shop. When I went in to pick up the frame I spoke with Myles, the store manager, who took the time to give me his knowledge on some of the items I would need to make my new Santa Cruz bike rock! The people of Cyclepaths Bike Shop made what could have been a horrible vacation a truly awesome one by going above and beyond since they benefitted little from the extra work that they took on by contacting Santa Cruz. I would highly recommend this shop if you are looking for a shop whose employees go that extra mile to help you the consumer. My only regret was that I didn't have more money to spend in Cyclepaths! read more

I went into this shop to buy some tubes, local maps and get some local trail info. Shop was empty of any other customers but me. I asked about local trail conditions to see what routes were open, and the man behind the counter wouldn't even look up at me or stop what he was doing to assist. He did answer my question, but only very sparingly and with very obvious lack of patience and never once even made eye contact. He made me feel as if he were far to busy to assist me or to take me seriously as a customer. So I left and likely won't ever return. read more

Love these guys - bought a couple of demos from Cyclepaths a few years back . . . then our needs were few . . . until this season. Have brought bikes in for general tuning, broken chain, supplies, "weird noises", etc, and they always take care of us in pretty short order, and at a very fair price. Been places in the past where not being a mtn bike guru works against you, especially in a town of hard-core outdoor enthusiasts & athletes. I learn something new about my bike every time I go in to Cyclepaths, as all the techs are willing to "share the love", get you back out on the trails, and make sure you're getting the most bang for your bike in the process. I got a flat tire on my road ride today. These guys not only let me use their pump they had a repair stand for me to use. They didn't pressure me into buying anything from them, but I did get a replacement spare tube. They had a huge selection of men bikes but nothing for the road. When I asked about road tires he offered to order me anything I needed. I didn't need them right away but plan on returning when my tires are shot.
