Oh my goodness. This was such a lovely surprise. I just wanted some kind of fresh seafood for dinner. I walked in to the smell of fishing docks, and whew it was clear there was lotsa fish. The selection was great. I was lucky enough to stop by when they were picking crab meat. I got a pound as well as 4 servings worth of the salmon. I've had some of the best meals ever. I've went here weekly since moving to SC a few months ago. I often get swordfish, which is fresh as can be and locally sourced. If this review were just for the swordfish, it would be 5 stars. I haven't had as much luck with other types of fish. Note that not all of their fish is local. I bought some snapper and when I unbagged at home, it was smelly. Not so much that I couldn't eat it, but the flavor was also off. Still looking for a seafood market with all fresh catch, local catch. We order a delivered low country seafood boil. The delivered to Palmed dunes . The boil was in container and hot when it got here. Everything was very good and well prepared. Service is good, but some of the seafood is horrible. We ordered two clusters of snow crab legs, a dozen of oyster. There are parasite eggs all over the legs and inside the snow crab meat and in some oysters. Oysters are not fresh raw and steamed. We refused to eat the snow crab legs after seeing the parasite and the owner only returned one of the two clusters. The meal costed over $100. Not a great experience at all. read more

Seems like there's a discrepancy between the fresh seafood market and its sister restaurant (which seems to have multiple names? Bluffton Family Seafood House vs. Toomer's Bluffton Seafood House vs. Toomer's Seafood Restaurant....). We haven't checked out the restaurant yet (though we plan to), but this review is for the seafood market. I'm very wary of tourist traps in coastal areas as it's often hard to tell whether you're really getting local/supporting local or if you're being duped. But this place is the real deal. If you're in from out of town, cooking for yourself and want fresh and local, go here. You literally pull up to the dock where their fishing boat is and walk into a long building that is about 1/4 seafood market and 3/4 processing facility for everything they catch that day. Everything is clearly labeled with where and when it was caught. Employees are incredibly nice and helpful. We just got shrimp but will be back for oysters and scallops, and might try one of their boils. read more

The folks were friendly, but we caught them on a day when they were under staffed. They apologized, before we got our service. Being retired and not in a hurry, that really didn't bother us. My meal was served cold, including the sides. The portions were very small. I ordered a 2 fish combo. The cod was a piece about 2.5 inches by 3 inches and thin. The shrimp were plentiful, but small. My wife and I both ordered our fish blackened. There was very little spice on both our meals. She had the blackened flounder sandwich. The sides were okay. The hushpuppies were excellent. Had I not eaten my sides and some of my wife's, I would have left there hungry. For that type of restaurant, we much prefer the Sea Shack on the Island. read more

October 15, 2020. We were in the area and stopped in. 10 years ago we were here. Not much is changed. They are still shucking oysters and cleaning crab in the back area. Everybody was pleasant, friendly and had lots of information to share. Parking is tight because there's a boat launch ramp. Seafood of all types can be purchased on site. read more

An old fashioned Seafood market that meets the likes of this old fashioned US Navy sailor. Almost everything in the store is caught by their boat which is moored at their dock. Literally tons of oysters plus shrimp and other delights of the sea are available. read more

Attempted to order takeout and was informed by manager that service wasn't available. Not impressed!

I have to say the food was a bit of a disappointment. As was the ambiance. However the Lemon Drops made by our waiter/ weekend bartender we're yummy!Nice and tart as I had him leave the sugar off the rim of the glass. I had gator tail which is a favorite of mine. There's was very dark which might of been the spices, chewy and crumbly pieces of various sizes. I also had their Mac and cheese side dish which had curdy cheese not creamy and was very greasy. Not much flavor there. My dinner salad was fine but, could of used some carrots for color. My husband had oysters on the half shell and said they were ok but, nothing special. Wouldn't you think a restaurant with Oyster in their name would have outstanding oysters? I must admit his raw oyster bar is set very high based on the fresh from the oyster beds in Tasmania. He had a large salad and agreed with me. The reason we decided to try Bluffton Oyster Co. was the entertainment. A friend recommend it as his friend preforms every Friday and Saturday night. In my life I've never left a restaurant due to such poor service. We ordered simple, quick food to prepare (Caesar salad with grilled fish and fried oysters). After an 45 minutes waiting with empty glasses before us we sought out help to check on our meal. The server came up and apologized and said good would be right up. (Clearly, kitchen missed order which is ok. Mistakes happen but own up and hustle to get food to the table.) After another 15 minutes and no sign of server with 3 other meals being served to others we gave up and left. The shrimp were incredibly fresh and tasty. Made a shrimp scampi pasta at home which was delicious. However, prices here are incredibly high which is mind boggling considering there is no middleman. We planned on having Mahi-mahi for Christmas Eve dinner and decided to go elsewhere to get it. Glad we did. The prices on some of their fish is as high as the ones at the Wholefoods market in Annapolis, MD where we moved from. How disappointing that local purveyors don't provide affordable healthy products to the locals. You have no transportation or handling costs, yet you up charge your catch to the point that it is a splurge rather than an average meal. When we lived in New England, we were able to get whole live lobster at $6.99/pound regardless of size. Cod was also a bargain. This was all available at our local fish monger. Half a bushel of oysters will run you $18. A full bushel will run you $30. But if you're buying a full bushel then you'd better have a pickup truck to bring 'em home in, and about half a dozen friends who really, really like oysters. Half a bushel ended up being way more than I thought it would be, and was enough for 4 people for dinner that evening. About half the bag were clusters of oysters (anywhere from 3 to 10 per cluster), and the other half of the bag were lone, individual oysters. There were about a dozen or so muscles mixed in with our half-bushel as well. I would definitely come back here for fresh seafood the next time I'm in town. read more

These are the best oysters I've had. Whenever we are in the area we buy a dozen select and a container of shucked oysters. The women aren't that friendly but one of the men took the time to explain the difference between clusters & select, then took me in the back to see them. So. Many. Oysters. A dry-erase board at the front exhorts, "Do not take pictures of ladies shucking oysters." At that, I really wanted a picture of the sign, but skipped it in the spirit of southern gentility. Our half-bushel of oysters was...plentiful. And fresh. And muddy. Do *not* come here expecting to get aesthetically tidy little oysters to serve on the half-shell over a bed of ice with a nice mignonette--these aren't your fancypants big city $3.25 a pop kumamotos. These are for roasting. Thankfully, grilling oysters works too, without needing to dig a firepit in the sand. Even more thankfully, my husband did the superficial cleaning and grilling while I got to enjoy the bivalves of his labor. Mollusc score! read more

This is the only place that we buy shrimp. There are no frills and no BS here. The small retail shop offers fresh shrimp, oysters, fish, crab and maybe more. The place has become a bit of a tourist stop so sometimes there are lots of folks in there that have no clue what they are looking for, wanting or needing... I think they might be looking for t-shirts and photo-ops more than seafood. We've only even bought shrimp here and they are excellent, every time. Staff is nice and straight to business. When we come to Hilton Head between September and May, we have to pick up oysters here. (Typically not available from late May to Labor Day) We almost always do one eat in - appetizer night, with these oysters as the finale. Yesterday we picked up a couple dozen oysters and a dozen clams. They were good size and easy to shuck. Did find a pea crab in about every 4th one, which I don't remember finding before but they aren't a problem. The clams were really good as well. read more

My Dad and I went to BOC to get 3 dozen oysters. We were helped right when we walked in the door. The prices were good on the oysters. Some of the oysters were difficult to shuck. Service was very disorganized. Party of 7 and the individual plates came out over a course of 15 minutes. Oysters for appetizers were fantastic. Blackened shrimp was great. Got one order totally wrong. The shrimp and grits was on the other end of the spectrum as these were very lumpy like instant grits, gravy that distracted from the true flavor, and extremely bland. Pass on this entree and spend your money on better dishes. If you only have an hour to eat, move on to another restaurant like the Mexican restaurant next door with great food and service. read more

Bluffton Oyster Company is a great place to pick up local seafood. We buy oysters here multiple times each year. By the bushel or thier "selects" which are singles both are great, fresh, and little salty pieces of heaven. They also have great deals on crabs, shrimp, and other local catches. My family and I have been buying oysters from Larry for over 30 years. I stopped by earlier today and picked up a half bushel of oysters. Very disappointed to say the least. Most of what we got was just empty shells and oysters that were already opened. Being a native to the area, I like to support local businesses. This has happened on more than one occasion. This place is awesome! Out of towners so we went here on a whim and loved it. The hushpuppies were served when we sat. They were perfect. I ordered the cup of gumbo as a starter my main dish was the fried shrimp Ruben sandwich on rye. Both were excellent.
