Catch 22 was awesome. We have lived on the island for nearly 5 years and had never been there until last Saturday night. It was terrific from our server Sarah to the appetizer, entree, and dessert. Everything was great! In all the time we've lived here I have NEVER seen fresh water rainbow trout served in any restaurant. We partially live in Utah some of the months of the year and love fly fishing and enjoying the brown and brook trout to eat. This North Carolina cold water trout was exceptional. We also had an exceptional dessert. It sounds a little weird but the Chocolate Sushi was awesome. It's not what you think. Cute spot in Hilton Head for tasty food and drinks with friendly service! Came for an early dinner, which was perfect since they offer an early bird dinner special of an entree + salad at a discounted price. I split the Cracked Pepper Tuna and Pan-Seared Scallops entrees with my sister, and got a Caesar salad. They also serve complimentary warm bread and butter- delicious! But the best bite was by far the scallops- perfectly seared and so flavorful! Key Lime Martini is also a winner- really tastes like dessert! The tuna was good too and a great portion especially for the price. After a day at the beach, I was ready to enjoy a nice intimate dinner. Unbeknownst to me, many of the restaurants recommend reservations and were already booked for the evening. Aimlessly searching, I stumbled upon Catch 22. The menu looked great and it was on New Orleans Rd. It must've been fate so we gave them a call to inquire about dining. A nice gentleman stated that a table in front would be ready in 30 minutes. Perfect! A large parking lot and well-lit restaurant front. Beautiful decor, friendly patrons, professional staff, and cool ambiance. The nice gentleman on the phone so happened to be the owner Mr. Gary Duren. He showed great hospitality by making us feel welcomed, offering drink and food suggestions, and enlightening us on some Hilton Head history. Our server brought out hot fresh bread. I ordered a Key Lime and one of my favorites an Espresso Martini. Both were made perfectly. I ordered the Catch of the Day, with whipped mashed potatoes and their signature Hush Puppies. My food was hot and prepared fresh to order. No complaints. I enjoyed every bite and ate it all. Well-deserved mentions: Service was top-notch. We came here for a last minute dinner having not made reservations until 30 mins prior. I've realized I need reservations wherever I go I can't just wing it anymore. Catch 22 offers quite a few options if you are looking for seafood or a pasta dish. The inside is incredibly dark and I was immediately tired, open the curtains or something! We sat in the back next to a window which gave us some light. The martini options are endless I started with the key lime martini and moved on to the pomegranate. My wife had the expression martini, which she loved. For dinner my daughter had the chicken parm, wifey the eggplant dish (she didn't like it), son had pasta and I ordered the mixed grill which was a lobster, short rib and duck. My fav was the duck and lobster the short rib while good I didn't care for the sauce on top of it. Overall good meal, service a bit slow and ambiance well...dark. read more

We made a last minute reservation to eat at 5:30. They were gracious about us having a toddler with us (high chair available) and were extremely accommodating, with our sever Derrick even procuring some orange slices from the bar after our toddler got fixated on the lemon slices in the water... If you dine in before 6, they have some early bird specials that include salad plus the entree which are a great deal! My spouse got the beef tips au poivre and I had the sheepshead fish special which was delicious. I also had their crab chowder and my only complaint was that there were too many potatoes. Their bread and whipped butter were delicious and we may have gone through 2 baskets. This dish come with sautéed onions, spinach and shiitake mushrooms. It also comes with spinach ravioli. The dish top with prosciutto creamy sauce. My wife dish is the Carolina Trout. The trout is dusted in cornmeal deep fried. My wife cannot take the onion and the exchange with grilled Brussels sprouts. It also serve with garlic potatoes and top with red pepper aioli. My husband and I were just turned away from this establishment, as the owners made it abundantly clear that our presence as people of color was HIGHLY unwelcome. There were SEVERAL people welcomed inside after us, who were dressed either similarly or FAR more shabbily than us, and being that this is a BEACH TOWN and there were no notifications regarding dress code on the website, we thought nothing of it. To be clear... this experience was disgusting, embarrassing, and he have NO intentions on simply "letting this go". Definitely check out Catch 22 if you're in Hilton Head! It has an elegant, old school vibe. Sit at the bar. Bartender Derek is a doll and has been there 20+ years. He's eaten everything on the menu except the tuna. He's full of stories and suggestions! We started with the crab and shrimp hush puppies with whipped butter and key lime sauce. These bad boys will make you hurt somebody! So decadent. I'm searching for the words. Just get them. They're unlike anything you've had. So satisfying and meaty with a hint of sweetness. We only got half an order, which was a good thing because the entrees would have stood no chance of being eaten. But ate them we did... The 8 oz. salmon filet was perfectly baked and served over an interesting five-grain salad which hit many notes from savory to tangy. It's topped with an apricot Sriracha glaze, which rounded out the flavors to include sweet with a little spice, and the lemon aioli drizzle added the needed citrus bite. The chef seems to really pay attention to detail and is so creative! He took the time to grill the half lemon served with my companion's dish which unfortunately I can't recall the name of. I do know it was a daily special. My companion was also allowed to change his vegetable to sautéed spinach, and the plating was beautiful. Finally, Y'ALL....the salted caramel pretzel brownie--the chef was clownin' with this one! It was pure sin. The brownie was so rich under the mound of fresh, creamy vanilla ice cream. It was a perfect bite with the saltiness from the pretzel crust in the bottom and the salted caramel drizzle. One bite and my companion and I just looked at each other speechless at how incredible this dessert was. Do yourselves a favor and try this place. We went to Catch 22 for the first time last night. We enjoyed the food and the ambiance was good. Our server was attentive and helpful. So, we would definitely go back. We started with the Daufuskie Hushpuppies, which are stuffed with shrimp & crab. They were good with butter or the dipping sauce, which was slightly sweet and had a subtle citrus flavor. We would order these again. Hubs had the onion soup and I tasted it. It a different take on traditional French Onion Soup. Their version uses a chicken broth instead of beef (good for me since I don't eat beef). It included yellow & green onions as well as leeks & shallots. And was topped with swiss cheese & croutons. We both thought it was delicious! For our entree hubs and I both ordered the Cracked Pepper Tuna. It was shashimi grade tuna that was served rare & came with garlic mashed potatoes and sauteed spinich. It was very good although hubs was not a fan of the spinach, lol. We went on a weekday night before peak tourist season and they weren't too busy. But I imagine on weekends & peak season it gets much more crowded. read more

With only a few exceptions in my adult experience, I've been treated very well by those in the service industry. Being that my wife and I travel the world as a function of hosting our respective TV shows, we're fortunate to have dined with some of the most humble, lovely, generous people on the planet. To that end, I'm forever in awe of the degree to which people are welcoming and kind to those that sit to enjoy their culinary expressions. When you're seated with them, you feel like family. Having researched all the restaurants we'd like to visit weeks prior to our arrival in Hilton Head, Brittany and I were excited to finally be able to visit local food icons Larry and Penny Duren. After 25 years of successful business ownership, Catch 22 is the epitome of local flavor, with legendary steak offerings and down home seasonings riding shotgun. As a yearly deep-sea fisherman myself, I absolutely couldn't wait to experience the much-talked-about seafood presentation of their talented head chef, Robin Van Hofen. Unfortunately, both our excitement and expectations were cut short at the door. As we walked inside smiling, we saw a woman standing near the entrance whom we immediately recognized to be Penny from the website, but were taken aback by the palatable look of disgust on her face in response to our entry. Confused... we walked about 2 more steps before being greeted by Larry, whose VERY first words to us were "Sorry.... we're gonna need some sleeves for that shirt". Mortified that we were addressed in such a rude and dismissive manner, especially after such meticulous planning to have a pleasant experience, the 180 degree spin and wordless exit from the business could have broken several track records. As we sat in our vehicle- flustered, embarrassed and unsure of how to even respond-the picture became increasingly clear: Larry and Penny's messaging and intent were unmistakeable, especially given the pursuant steady inflow of six to eight other sleeveless patrons with their shoulders exposed as well. Not wanting to jump to any conclusions, I returned to the restaurant and asked Larry who the "sleeve requirement" was specifically for. He replied flatly, "the restaurant here". I then asked him if that applied to everybody, to which he informed me that "the upscale restaurants would probably do that". Message Received. However... by virtue of some strange and apparently recessed desire for me to risk adding insult to injury, when I pointed out the several patrons who did NOT have sleeves who were both presently dining and had entered unbothered behind me, Larry flatly stated "they all have sleeves" , but upon catching himself mid-lie, modified his assertion to apply to the ladies only. By this point, what followed was of little consequence, as Larry continued to take his best swings at mumbling, stumbling excuses... with him ending up down some inane rabbit hole about male armpit hair and female patrons complaining. Message Confirmed. After thanking him for clarifying, I exited to meet a lovely family of 4, whom I feared might also be affected by this unwelcoming environment. After sharing my experience with them, the brotha went inside, confirmed with Larry what he'd just done to my wife and me, canceled his paid reservation and got his down payment back. Salute King, I hope you see this later. As for you... Larry and Penny... I have neither words nor advice. Your word choice of "upscale", when weighed against the sandy, disheveled, wind blown general appearance of your preferred customers did all the heavy lifting for us. We aren't upset. Thank you for sharing who you are and who is both welcome and unwelcome in your business. Obviously, I'll see to it that my wife and I use our respective platforms to ensure that you won't have the WRONG "sleeveless" patrons darkening the doorway of your establishment again. If this is how TWO retired Atlanta Police Sergeants with over 25 years of combined service are treated casually at the door, God only knows how others will be treated once these same people are touching their food. read more

After reading the reviews, I have to wonder if I visited the same place. But yes, same. We so looked forward to this, as our neighbors back home raved about it from their last trip. But when we arrived, the hostess was surly and definitely not invested. I approached her and told her we had reservations and she didn't even look up. Just said, "You're at the booth at the very front, next to the door." No welcome, no walking us to our table, no nothing. I also wondered why we were being seated at the very front by the door since only one other couple was seated at a table towards the back (which looked nicer and more intimate). The bar was full of patrons having dinner there, and the bartender seemed very nice and enthusiastic towards them; very involved and pleasant. But we were at a booth across from it. However, the server soon arrived and was very welcoming and helpful. My partner even ordered the wrong wine and she replaced it, no questions asked. As for the food, we all thought it was okay. I had the seafood platter which was simply 3 shrimp and a trout. So not really seafood but I knew what I was ordering; just thought there would be more on the plate from "the sea." What I had was good, but I would never rush back for it. Dessert was the highlight. It was just a standard version of cheesecake but it was very good. It was not a disaster by any means, but I wouldn't go out of my way to frequent this restaurant. read more

Highlights of this restaurant: best hush puppies on the island served with Keylime aïoli followed by the beef tips and the scallop potato side. Also notable is great old fashions and the service is wonderful. Each server knows what all of the dishes are made up of. Most knowledgeable servers I have met regarding the dishes they are serving. The favorites of our group that I tried was the beef tips with crispy potatoes and horseradish cream sauce. French onion soup was good too. A different flavor than I've had before. Not so favorite was the pasta dishes. Extremely bland, with very little sauce. While the title says creamy it is anything but creamy. I would highly recommend avoiding ordering a pasta or a Italian dish here. Stick to what they are best at: meat entrees. read more

What happened to Orange Roughy? Did the species disappear? Fished-out? Why is today's solid white albacore tuna the equivalent of 1970's cat food? When did Tilapia enter the scene? Did some sort of miracle of science cause the species to suddenly appear in the last 25 years? Or has it always existed? Perhaps the marketing department created magic out of former garbage fish? Food was bland and lacked flavor, seafood seemed not fresh. I got the seafood sampler- lobster, scampi- expected tradition scampi but got a tomato base cream version, scallops- were sandy and tasted frozen. Waitress Nikki was the worst experience of the place- what a wierd ditz- inappropriate in comments such as stating she would tell the kitchen to hurry up when in fact it really had not been that long since she put the order in. I was uncomfortable to say the least with her breathy presentation and lack of knowledge and memory- she forgot to ask the chef a question I had regarding the cream sauce even after she said she was going to check immediately. Another overpriced, mediocre restaurant in HH. The scallops: 2/3 were good. One was very gritty. The spinach was disgusting, no flavor whatsoever. We've eaten at a lot of places in HHI. For our fall visit I was determined to eat somewhere new. I am currently kicking myself for not eating here sooner. Made reservations and was able to pick where I wanted to sit. (Outside). They followed all covid rules. For a perfect night to eat outside we had an awesome meal. Started with the snow crab Rangoons. You get the crab at the end which was unexpected. Creamy. Crunchy. Not greasy. The kid got the fried shrimp. He ripped all the batter off because he's a heathen but loved it. I had the scallops with ravioli. Holy Moses. Tender and perfectly cooked. The pasta was excellent. Not overly goat cheese-y. Hubby got the mixed grill and cleared the plate. This little gem is hidden between two other restaurants. They carry a nice selection os wine and cocktails as well as an early dinner menu (45 min only). The entrees choices and specials are varied and we enjoyed our meals (Wreckfish which we've never had included). My wife and I visited for dinner while vacationing on HHI. We made a a reservation and we're seated promptly (actually a bit early). The service was very friendly and personable. The waiter made very good recommendations on which fish was best that night and was spot on with his apple pie recommendation. The decor is nice, though you do have a distinctly different feel of several zones through the restaurant. The bar does not feel like it is the same restaurant as the main dining area. In terms of food itself, the hush puppies were terrific. A unique flavor and prepared very well. The Caesar salad was a big disappointment. The dressing was clearly jarred/purchased and the grated Parmesan cheese looked and tasted like it was from a bag. Thankfully the entrees picked it back up. The Red Snapper and Trout were both prepared expertly and the sides were delicious. Everything was a bit under-salted, but with a small extra dose the flavors popped. All told this was a very nice dining experience, and a restaurant that I would happily recommend, though the Caesar salad should be deleted from the menu if it isn't improved. That isn't meant to be harsh, so much as to say the rest of the food and experience is so good that the salad is a serious let-down comparatively speaking. read more

Catch 22 was the best restaurant we went to during our weekend trip to Hilton Head. There are some very popular places for seafood here, but none of them come close to Catch 22 for taste and freshness. The only caveat is that it is a bit pricey, but its seafood and Hilton Head so it's not unexpected. Everything we ordered was so delicious and perfectly prepared. I forgot to take pictures of the appetizers, but we ordered the Snow Crab Rangoon and the Peel-and-Eat Shrimp. The Crab Rangoon has real crab, compared to most Chinese restaurants with fake crab meat, and they were amazing. Best Crab Rangoon I've ever had. The shrimp were fresh and delicious and cooked to perfection. They were very easy to peel and had that slight sweetness that let's you know those were real fresh shrimp. The Seafood Sampler was amazing. The only caveat is that the shrimp scampi was prepared with sundried tomatoes, which was a first for me. It caught me off guard, but they were really tasty still. Just keep that in mind if you're a scampi purist or don't like sundried tomatoes. My wife ordered the Pepper Tuna and that was so good. They seared it perfectly with the perfect amount of rawness inside. The horseradish sauce was amazing. There was another sauce on there too and that was delicious too. Everything matched perfectly! Honestly, some of the food on Hilton Head kinda let me down and most of it was acceptable. Prices tend to be a bit higher here than normal, but it's to be expected. If I ever come back, Catch 22 is at the top of my list! read more

No way we are coming back. High price doesn't mean quality here. We were understanding (post Covid, high season) and we didn't complain, or sent our food back. We wanted to support a family owned local restaurant. We left a good tip to the waiter as he has tried hard to make us comfortable. It was a birthday party of 5 and we were trying hard to have a good time. We made a reservation a few days in advance. The place looked super dated outside. Inside it looked like it has grown out of a much smaller bar by addition of extra spaces. The three rooms all got the floors at different levels. Quaint, right? However lack of quality and pretensios attempts at high class with an overpriced menu and with $700 art for sale slapped to the walls is not a substitute for class or quality if one fails at the basics. The table we were seated at was in the far room and was very flimsy and wobbly to the point it was unusable. We had a chance to look at this engineering marvel a bit closer, since the square table cloth didnt really fit the round table. There is no doubt it was originally a much smaller square table, with some plywood cutouts added to each of the sides to make it a much larger round table. Cheap, thin, flimsy, wobbly. A failed attempt at getting larger parties seated? We have asked for a booth that was empty when we've beed seated, but were told that all of them were reserved. No other tables were available to us. At 8PM they were already out of the spinach artichoke dip and the NY strip. The food: - We got the mussels and the hush puppies for an appetizer. Mussels were super salty, overcooked and chewy. Lacking a good sauce. - The hush puppies were probably the best thing we've tried there. They were warm and fluffy. It was a highlight of the evening. - The black beans soup was super spicy. Some of us couldn't finish a bowl it was too much. Calling this contraption "soupe du jure" in a menu is super pretentious. - Seared tuna and the salmon were good, hard to ruin dishes. - The hallibut with risotto from the specials menu was a super thin and dry piece of fish with equally dry risotto. Lacking any sauce whatsoever. - The filet mignon was not medium rare, but it was passable as medium with still some pink left in the middle. On top of dry risotto. - The shrimp scampi was a complete disaster. Not a pinch of salt touched the pasta while it was cooked. There was absolutely no sauce anywhere on a plate. A few tasteless shrimp and a bit of a graded parmesan completed the horrible dish. This one was deserving to be sent back to the kitchen. A fast food joint would've done a better job honestly. Overall: complete lack of consistency, no attention to details and lack of quality all around. Not acceptable for the high price. One has to wonder if the high traffic touristy area like HHI is like a high tide that lifts all the boats and is an unfortunate reason for the places like this one to survive. read more
