I am constantly amazed at how poorly this organization serves its clients. On one occasion I went in with a large CASHIERS check from Wells Fargo Bank, less than a mile away. I wanted to deposit most of it into an SEP IRA and needed the balance in cash or a check made out to me. I explained this immediately. After many delays and phone calls, the IRA was set up. That's when I was told they would have to put a hold on the balance. (I had about 80,000 in the CU at the time and had done business with them for 25 years with both savings and checking) I closed the checking account at that time. A letter to the general manager received no response. Recently they did an unauthorized minimimum distribution for 2012, taking money from a high interest CD and putting it into a new savings account, and charged me $5 for inadequate balance. By doing the mRD in April rather than the typical year end, I was denied the approx 3% interest I would have earned for the balance of the year. The manager saw no problem with this. I'm assuming they did this to all clients who had IRA's and saved thousands of dollars by pulling these funds out early in the year. It's a very clever scheme. I have been coming to this branch for approximately 12 years and have had nothing but great experiences everyone is very helpful and kind and patient. Even if there is a long line someone is always available to follow up with you to prevent you from waiting in the line if not necessary. Everyone from the bankers loan officers to the security guards are very pleasant and make you feel welcome. For that I will remain a faithful member. I came to pay an autoloan and because USE Credit Union it is a sister C.U. The service was great and I was informed of the different options to pay. Although I had to go get cash at my other bank the teller was apologetic and helped me to make future payments easier. The bank was clean as well. If you want to nitpick, being greeted upon arrival would have been nice and they had a pitcher for water but it wasn't filled. I was the victim of identity fraud recently and had to figure out how to protect my accounts, and all of this while I was at work meetings in Chicago so barely had any time to myself. Patrick from USECU handled my accounts over the phone, gave me some good options for maximizing security while we waited for a few checks to clear before I could close my account and move to another one. The following week I get a call from them and apparently I had accidentally written my checks on an old closed account, these were to the IRS mind you, and they called to say they went ahead and honored them because they knew those were the ones I was waiting to clear before I could close my other account. I was dumb founded, since when does a bank do this, actually remember your back story and use that information to help you out, instead of collect fees? I've been with this bank for over 10 years now, they have always been very good, but now they have moved into my unicorns and rainbows category of consumer experiences. I had a fraudulent charge put on my debit card. I went in today to have them fax in a letter and Marriane (who has been working there for a long time) did it with no problem. She empathized with me and went the extra mile in getting the issue resolved. I just checked my account and as she said, my account has the money restored already. What would have took ten days, she made take a couple of hours. Excellent customer service by far. It does get busy there sometimes as many people from shared branches come. But other than that, all the employees here are knowledgable and really good to work with. read more

My husband and I have been USE customers for well over 20 years, so this review is not about a single experience (as are many on this site), but rather a reflection of our overall dealings with this company. We have banked with them in various offices in the County of San Diego, Contra Costa County, and San Francisco; in branch offices in these areas, as well as their affiliates, and in offices on California State University campuses, so our experience is not limited to any one office, but rather to many. In each and every case, over the past 20 plus years, we have found the service to be friendly, interested, and exemplary. Our needs were addressed completely. The staff has always been very cordial and polite, and have always made certain that our questions and concerns were addressed fully. On the many occasions that we have needed to call over the years, we have not experienced an inordinately long wait on hold, with one exception when I was on hold for about 15 minutes, due to call volume. In any event, the system gave me the opportunity to leave my number for a call back if I wanted. I chose to wait. We had banked with another credit union in the San Diego area for a number of years. I won't name the credit union - it's a good one, but USE is better, in my opinion. We had banked with several banking institutions in the past, and always felt "used," both in terms of fees and treatment. USE Credit Union goes the extra distance to make you feel like you are part of the family, and that you are valued. We never, ever got that feeling from B of A, or any of the others we tried! In short, although some people will find fault with anything that does not meet their expectations to a "T", and who perhaps allow things beyond the control of a business to color their experience, USE is, for us, one of the very best financial institutions to handle our banking needs. Drove down from Camp Pendleton today to handle some business. Was greeted right when we walked and and asked how she could help and was very polite. She told me to have a sit while she got someone to help me. I believe his name was B - sorry if I am wrong - came out and told me he was going to help me and we started talking. Then my kids and husband joined were offered to coffee and hot chocolate and the WiFi. B and I went in the office and he answered all my questions and even when I had more. He took the time to even help me reset my online banking information due to a error and was even had a lot patience when my daughter kept coming in asking questions. I filled out some paperwork and he had told me it would be next week for answer due to the holiday, however 2 hours later he called me and told me everything was taken care of. That is what I call customer service and I greatly appreciate service like that. I will be coming back down from Camp Pendleton to open accounts for my kids in a few weeks instead of our military credit union. read more

On Friday, November 9, 2018, I was having such a stressful day. I had already written my check for my rent and there was money at my fingertips with various apps but I was having an extremely difficult time trying to get the money from the app to my checking account. Everything I was trying was not working. I went to USE because needed a new debit card and while I was there I explained how I was trying to get this money from the cash app but was experiencing difficulties. I was in there for a few hours back-and-forth trying to figure this out. The tellers and management tried to help but none of us could seem to get it. Later that evening, I had someone to write out a check for me but I was concerned if it would be held. We got there a few minutes after they'd closed. I tapped on the window to ask a question and... to keep a long story short, two of the tellers came to the door and just reassured me that they would do everything to work with me and make sure that my rent check did not bounce. Moving from a big bank to USE has been a real eye opener. I started going to cash my paychecks and switched because of the superior customer service. When signing up for a new account I told Anthony it would only happen if he could do it in fifteen minutes. Turns out he's a magician. Anthony & Tim are the homies but the entire staff is friendly and proficient. If you are over long lines, inept tellers, fees on top of senseless fees, etc then you should make the switch. I have had my account for a month with only one snafu. I have two jobs, work seven days a week and was not in the mood for more bank bs. I headed into the La Mesa branch fully ready to do battle with a manager. Instead my rbf was immediately greeted by Gabriel. He diffused my attitude and fixed my problem in about thirty seconds. Having set aside my lunch hour for an argument, I was at a loss. So he gave me a tour of the newly remodeled branch. It's pretty awesome. Long story long, I'm never going back to banking the old way. Was a customer for ~30 years. The last 10 was only because I didn't want to do the work to move. These clowns can't do anything other than basic banking. (Credit where it's due, they generally get this right, beware on online bill pay though, it's happened more than once payees get illegible checks because they no one does QC on the printing. Fun tracking those down and now you're past due because it's a lotta work adding toner to the laser printer.) Auto and home loans are not competitive and they screwed up hampering my ability to put in an offer on a house. Offering a long time customer with around 50K in accounts and no debts, crackwhore rates and couldn't make an IRA work after 4 tries, a few phone calls, a dozen emails and 2 branch visits, told me to make an appointment and come back and do the paperwork a 5th time after I took work off to get it fixed. Took the funds to my other bank and it was a done deal in 20 minutes the next day. (At better rate, BONUS!) It's a PITA moving banks, but the reward of never having to deal with these incompetent fools again literally makes me feel good inside. If you only need basic banking, have the patience of a saint, like fees and less than mediocre service, you have found your paradise. Not their fault, but parking at this location sucks unless you are there at odd hours. read more

I was in trying to use this bank- because it's a sister credit union. We are suppose to be able to use it. Well I went in to take some money out- exactly how my bank told me. I was talking to the teller. She was explaining they did not give out more than $500. I was explaining what my bank had said. When all of a sudden this man shouts out from over on the side at me "We don't do That here" Well I'm sorry but I was not talking to him. Yesterday, I stopped by the La Mesa branch because my ATM card had not been working well. I had just had my husband's oil and filter changed and the attendant had to punch in the number manually (no big deal, but it was the 5th time in two days my card would not work). When I stopped in, the bank teller, J, said she could help me at the small desk where she was seated. When I sat down and explained what was going on, she gave a heavy sigh. I explained to her that I needed a new card for use and would like to get a chip card for safety. She punched a bunch of things into her computer and said I would receive my chip card in 7-10 days. In the meantime, I could use my current card. I told her that I needed a temporary card because my current one wasn't working. (The whole reason I came in, right?) She snapped at me, "I guess I thought you understood you wouldn't have a card for 7-10 days!" I said that I would not be able to go without access to my bank account for 7-10 days, I was on my way to buy new tires for my husbands car. She heavy sighed again and called card services, who failed to answer. She then told me she didn't think there was anything she could do. She called over another attendant, Melissa, and started explaining the problem. I said, "I'm sorry if I misunderstood, I just can't go that long without a working card." Before I even got the words out, Melissa snapped (and I mean snapped, with a loud voice like i was an errant child, "stop talking so I can try to understand what she (J) is trying to tell me." I shrunk down in my seat and waited while they worked together to get me a temporary card (turned out to be no big deal.) Member for 20+ years. NEVERTHELESS, I will most likely be moving every cent I have. It was really that bad. Is it so hard to be nice? Maybe something had happened making her have a bad day, but even as I sat there asking how I might have offended her and apologizing if the misunderstanding was my fault, Melissa never once made eye contact with me or letting me know it was okay. I would like to give a personal shoutout to Janee Brown the manager of this branch and must say she is definitely due for a promotion because of her costumer service and efficiency at her job , I'm always in and out with no hassle. Another employee by the name of Malissa Macias is very friendly as well , I had an issue with my account and was pretty frustrated and she was nothing but kind and reassuring!
